Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: 'Price' First Out of TV City Before Renovation

2023-03-13 Thread David Lynch
Press Your Luck has already moved to Haven Studios, taping this week and
next according to On Camera Audiences. (Although I assume that's based on
the assumption that Elizabeth Banks' voice improves from what we heard at
the Oscars last night.) I think that was the only one of ABC's game shows
that taped at Television City, but Fremantle-owned Celebrity Family Feud is
also moving to Haven when it tapes its next season. Presumably To Tell The
Truth will as well when/if it records more episodes, but there has been a
full season that's been sitting unaired for over a year.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Mini review: The Wheel

2022-12-21 Thread David Lynch
What I’ve said about Michael McIntyre for American audiences is that his
closest American equivalent is Jimmy Fallon. Goofy, has a lot of famous
friends, very "love him or hate him” appeal to the masses, but he gets
eyeballs. I assume McIntyre insisted on hosting but I think it would have been
a lot better with Fallon, because actually knows who the hell these people are
and can work with that a little more. And maybe get some higher-wattage
celebrities.

I don’t know if it would be that much work to track in real time who gets what
clue. You’d just need a paper copy of the printed grid to write down who
answered what clue correctly, and I kind of assume they already have someone
taking detailed notes about what clues have been played and who got them
right/wrong in case there’s a technical glitch or a discrepancy in the scoring.

multiple-nationality or have been pushed into it by a treaty, even though I
would be eligible for one in the majority of other countries.

Given that the producers ripped themselves off, I imagine that it was
pretty clear that A+E owns everything about the original Live PD and the
question is whether what they own is specific enough to be enforceable and
also general enough that On Patrol Live is infringement.

Re: [TV orNotTV] CBS shufflin' breakfast shows in L.A.

2022-07-14 Thread David Lynch
KCBS has been solidly last-place in the ratings in the morning for a while and
I hear KCAL has a better reputation despite being literally the same operation,
so I guess they’re going to try to goose the network’s viewing numbers by
adding a few thousand more viewers in LA.

They’ve also got the CBS Evening News live at 3:30 PT and then again in its
usual slot at 6:30. Given the way the local morning shows are ratings
juggernauts for KTLA and KTTV (Fox) against their tape-delayed network
counterparts, I’m surprised neither of them has (to my knowledge) put a
national/world focus on their 6:30 half-hour and spun it as more up to date and
with less of a northeast corridor bias.

I'm rather disgusted by how this tries to pin the cancelation on the mood
in the country in general, when the event that precipitated the
cancellation was when it became apparent that they had intentionally
destroyed the video evidence in the case of the Williamson County, Texas

Expect more of this as Comcast prepares to sell its share of Hulu in 2024

the business than me says she figures Disney will keep the brand around for
more adult stuff that doesn't fit the main Disney brand but the actual

Re: [TV orNotTV] Ex-Chief weighs in on the J! hosting situation

2022-02-21 Thread David Lynch
I think Ken has improved and started making the job his own as he gets more
comfortable, but Mayim seems to be approaching it like an actress who’s working
from a script — she’ll use the same wording or hit the same emotional beats
every time. My go-to example of that is treating the third Final Jeopardy wager
as suspenseful even if it’s not relevant to the outcome.

It wouldn’t be horrible if she got the job full-time but I have a strong
preference for Ken.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: NFL Delivers Heroin Hit This Weekend

2022-01-24 Thread David Lynch
As a Chiefs fan who felt royally screwed after the 2018 (January 2019) AFC
championship came down to a very similar-feeling OT win by the Patriots,
not even being on the other side of that equation has changed my opinion
that the first possession shouldn't be sudden death. I think the current
system is fine for the regular season, but I'd like to see both teams given
a chance on offense/required to play defense when there's more at stake.

For me, it would just be a matter of changing the current rule to be the
game not ending on the first drive in the event of a field goal or a
touchdown by the team on offense. No need to go all the way to college
style overtime, which I've seen some propose.

Washington, DC's WJLA airs Wheel and Jeopardy. Given their proximity to
corporate HQ in suburban Baltimore, they may be getting more attention than
some of the other stations.

But even in much larger markets than Traverse City, they're still not
totally back to normal. At least as of yesterday evening, Austin's KEYE
still has no computer graphics in their newscasts other than the weather
segment and seems to be manually switching the newscasts and running local
ads, but otherwise, it would be hard to tell that anything was wrong.

Re: [TV orNotTV] What is Sinclair up to?

2021-02-08 Thread David Lynch
Sinclair is playing games with shell corporations and taking advantage of
loopholes in media ownership rules with most of these second stations -
technically, Sinclair owns one and a company that is only really
independent on paper owns the second (90% of WVAH's ownership is in the
name of the Sinclair founder's children) but then contracts operation back
to Sinclair.

My theory is that they think that the Biden FCC is going to crack down on
that sort of arrangement so they're transferring the most profitable
affiliations/programming to the stations they own outright before it
becomes more obvious that they're stripping the "sidecar" stations for
parts.

I think Ken has a better chance of thinking it will fit into his schedule
than George Stephanopolous or Anderson Cooper. 40-odd taping days a year
plus promotional appearances isn't really a full time job, but it's a
pretty serious commitment when you add in a cross-country commute to get
there, plus whatever money or resources would be required for substitute
anchors or broadcasts from the LA bureau for days/weeks at a time.

All of the pictures that I've seen make it look like it's a larger version
of the Evening News/Face the Nation set and won't have any of Times Square
visible from inside the studio, so all they need to do is keep their
outdoor cameras pointed towards 1515 Broadway. I have a suspicion that this
is partly born out of skittishness at having too many people at the
Broadcast Center on 57th Street.

I assume ABC won't be originating from Times Square and will instead be
using the same setup in the newly-renovated World News (Tonight) studio
that they've been using for primaries and debates.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Won’t have the C-Dub to kick around any more?

2020-08-06 Thread David Lynch
The Taskmaster YouTube channel has been posting non-geoblocked videos from
past series and, as someone who knows about 60% of the contestants on any
given series, I think it does lose something when you don't know the
competitors by reputation.

That said, the British-style panel game where the game is secondary to the
comedy doesn't seem to do so well here. But we are willing to watch
celebrities be silly if it's in the service of playing a game (see To Tell
the Truth, Match Game, and Hollywood Game Night, which are all pretty
game-forward.)

As others have said, there are other studios available, but the Evening
News broadcast from the same set as CBS This Morning from the 2016 election
until the show moved to DC. In the mean time, the studio cum newsroom that
the Evening News had been in since the 90s (bar a few weeks/months of
renovations in preparation for Katie Couric's tenure) was converted back to
just a newsroom.

I'm mostly with you, but I think the edit that aired did Banks a disservice
in regards to her hosting, even if watching her emotional reaction was
riveting. From what I hear, tapings of the current edition of Press Your
Luck are pretty linear but it's nowhere near the live-to-tape of days gone

I would have sworn that I heard at one point that Alex gets one card with
the clue and correct response and another card with the wagers and what
their score would be if they get the question right/wrong, so, if that was
the case, they really should have known that it could have happened.

During the run-up to the 2016 election, the TVs at my gym went from cable
news 24/7 to whatever is/was showing sports that the staff want to put on
because they got tired of being in the middle of the debates between people
who insist on Fox News and people who hate Fox News. The TVs are mounted in
threes, and one of each trio has been on the local Fox affiliate since the
Super Bowl, another has been on TNT for basically the entire NBA season,
and the third got flipped from ESPN to CNBC on Monday.

That isn’t necessarily a problem. I remember at least one time when Dave, in
his inimitable fashion, killed time waiting for one of the news anchors to make
it over to the Ed by complaining about how he had to kill time and badgering
his producer about whether they were there yet. I think it was Couric, but

Yes and no. The occupants of the planets of the week are in very standard
TNG-era “paint some spots on them or give them prosthetic noses and/or ears”
makeup. The main ensemble has a character, Bortas, who pretty clearly started
as a Klingon analogue (physically large, morally uptight, deep voice, lots of
bony-looking prosthetics), but the culture of his planet has gone in very

As someone who’s still in the 18-to-35 demographic for a few more weeks, I’ll
point out that Alex, Pat, and Vanna and their respective shows have been around
for our entire living memory. They’ve got the same televisual comfort food
thing going on that sustained The Price Is Right after Bob Barker turned into a
grouchy old man who occasionally forgot the rules to games that had he had been
hosting for decades. I think the public response if it was perceived
(accurately or not) that any of them had been pushed out would be worse than
the damage done by keeping them on.

There are also dedicated cable channels, but my cable system (one of the ones

JKL’s writers didn’t have appreciably more time than LSwSC’s did. Both shows

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Annoying new trend on The Late Show

2018-01-28 Thread David Lynch
My experience at a Jeopardy taping where a family member was a contestant
also included an extended break after the first round to re-read a pop
music clue multiple times because neither Alex nor the booth could find an
intonation that they liked for the song title "Make Me Like You" because
there were two different ways to interpret "like" and either interpretation
creates one of those English sentences where adding a stress to any word
changes the meaning significantly.

By the last few years of Barker's run, the commercial load had increased to
the point where his insistence about being live to tape led him to start
badgering contestants about hurrying up and making a decision. The taping
from the Drew Carey era I went to was not so much "live-to-tape" as "one
take, edited for time." Some of the breaks between segments seemed
significantly longer in the studio than on the air, and Drew never seemed
outwardly concerned about the timing, but it's nothing like the stories
that I've heard about some of the 00s prime time game shows where some of
them would take several hours to shoot a single episode because there were
multiple takes of everything that wasn't directly deciding the outcome.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Fewer people watching local TV news, but it is still tops

2018-01-08 Thread David Lynch
Just noticing that the thumbnail for this link on Google Inbox is a freeze
frame from one of my local TV stations (KEYE) featuring two anchors with
30+ years on the Austin airwaves who were pushed out shortly after Sinclair
bought the station, which is yet another problem with the state of local
TV. Even when the studio is local, the revolving door of executives and
on-air talent who constantly cycle through mean that the people trying to
tell you what's going on in your city often don't have roots there and
often have no interest in putting down those roots.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Treatment of LGBT TV characters (Trek spoilers)

2018-01-08 Thread David Lynch
Per lesbian-focused blog Autostraddle, there were 13 lesbian/bi/otherwise
not 100% straight female TV characters who died in 2017, and this was a
huge decrease from 31 in 2016.
https://www.autostraddle.com/all-65-dead-lesbian-and-bisexual-characters-on-tv-and-how-they-died-312315/?all=1

For men, where I'm a little bit more up on the pop culture side of things,
it's a trope that dates back to when we were the go-to for "he had it
coming" deaths, either by murder or suicide brought on by the idea of how
horribly "deviant" their desires were. Then came both greater acceptance
and AIDS, and the tragic gay who had everything going for him except that
he was gay and thus doomed to die (eg, the "killing all the right people"
episode of Designing Women.) Then it was that there was one gay character
and it made it easy for the writers to write them off by killing them
because they wouldn't leave behind a grieving spouse. And so forth and so
on up through now when it seems to keep happening. It's one of those things
where you can't point to any specific instance and say "this is homophobic"
but the overall pattern seems to add up to far too many LGBTQ characters
dying.

Regarding ST:D, I'm not hugely surprised when I think about the initial
buzz -- which was only about the surviving half of the couple being a major
character -- versus the actual discussion of the initial episodes where the
other half was getting a lot more attention. Despite being a Trek fan, I
still haven't watched any of it yet, partly because I resent CBS's strategy
in making it streaming-only, partly because there's a glut of
heavily-serialized television in which the fate of the human race hangs in
the balance and missing a moment means missing some seemingly-minor detail
that will turn out to be important later (and some of it is even fictional)
and thus the brightly-colored, allegory-of-the-week sci-fi of The Orville
feels more satisfying.

On the political side of things, I remember lamentations during the
campaigns about how the big investigative bombshells from newspapers seemed
to always become public around midnight Eastern because the NYT, WaPo, et

press. That seems to have changed just in the last few weeks.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Survey: cost of going to movies still a great concern

I assumed that was $25 per viewing, not $25 per viewer, so I'm a little bit
surprised that there isn't more interest, given that, at least in my area,
a basic 2D, non-IMAX ticket tends to run around $11 these days. Heck, $25
plus a pizza delivery runs close to what I pay when I go out to a
full-service cinema by myself.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Cable nets fixin' to shed the dead weight

2017-03-22 Thread David Lynch
At least for the niches I fit into, it never felt to me like the corporate
owners never really tried to research their audience beyond getting broad
stereotypes and reruns of non-niche programming that their niche enjoys. To
follow the bookstore analogy, Reading the program guide for Logo always
felt like walking up to the "gay and lesbian" section and finding that it's
2/3 books by straight people that have gay followings and 1/3 RuPaul.

Speaking of RuPaul, Logo, and cable companies ditching networks with low
viewership, I kind of assume that the first-run episodes of "Drag Race"
moving to VH1 is the beginning of the end for them.

I'm curious as to whether this is a companion to TMZ or a replacement for

I feel much the same way about the English commentators doing soccer games.
I've never been able to differentiate between the English Premier League
pool announcers that NBC uses when Arlo White isn't doing a game (other
than noticing that one of them has a Glasgow accent,) although I can
usually manage to tell who's who among the freelancers ESPN would draft
during a World Cup by the time the knock-out stages arrived.

Re: [TV orNotTV] 'British Bake-Off' Leaving Beeb for C4

2016-09-13 Thread David Lynch
"Civil" doesn't necessarily mean warm and fuzzy when it comes to the
judges' critiques, but it is very far from the sort of competitive reality
TV where the participants say "I'm not here to make friends." The drive
that defines the bakers is their perfectionism, not their competitiveness.
Everything is couched in terms of success or failure at the challenge.

The other thing that jumps out at me is how lighthearted everything is. Mel
and Sue have been pretty good at helping the more stressed-out contestants
remember that it's just cake (and, if the rumors are true, standing near
anyone who gets particularly emotional and using enough brand names and
swear words to render any footage of the moment unusable.) If anyone thinks
that winning Bake-Off will completely change their life, it doesn't make it
to air.

This is also something that I'll give NBC a lot of credit for: As far as I
know, all of the people doing coverage of the individual events are retired
athletes or broadcasters who work full time on sports, and many of those
broadcasters are specialists. There's a whole army of play-by-play
announcers and expert commentators who are on their umpteenth Olympics but
who I only ever hear for two weeks every four years in the sports that only
get a lot of attention during the Olympics (e.g., swimming, diving, and
gymnastics,) in addition to the people who cover the pro game week in and
week out moving over to cover the Olympics in sports like golf, basketball,
and tennis. At worst, the US coverage seems to pair a generalist
play-by-play announcer with a former athlete.

We do have breakfast show presenters involved, but they're doing the
opening ceremony and hosting the studio portions of the broadcast, which
essentially amounts to serving as traffic cop and doing the occasional
interview, none of which really requires a lot of deep knowledge about
sports.

Re: [TV orNotTV] I tried watching the Olympics on NBC today

2016-08-08 Thread David Lynch
Unfortunately, I have Time-Warner/whatever they're calling themselves after
the merger and they don't seem to have picked up that package, or at least
haven't advertised it in any way that I know how to find it, but the
Comcast thing sounds like it would be good. I'll admit that I'd prefer
something that doesn't require me to pay enough attention to know to turn
in to a specific event at a specific time (basically a cable version of the
Gold Zone stream.) Having seen the BBC's "red button" coverage of Wimbledon
with live video of umpteen simultaneous matches in the early rounds, I know
that that kind of thing can be transformative if it's done well, but we
feel very behind the times on that kind of stuff here.

I tried to watch some of the streaming when the USA's women's rugby match
was (I thought) pre-empted (actually just delayed) due to NASCAR running
long and was not impressed with the experience. Video quality wasn't great,
though that may just have been my connection, and it was tough to navigate
to a specific point in an 8-hour video with the same slider control that
you'd get for an 8-minute YouTube video.

One interesting thing from tonight: the medal round for men's team
gymnastics, normally a marquee event, didn't start airing until well after
11:00 ET and was partly pushed to late night. Of course, it was kind of
obvious from the way they covered what we saw that there wasn't a comeback
from the early stumbles that made it into the prime time show (i.e., there
were neither leaderboards at any point nor any coverage of any of the other
teams.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] I tried watching the Olympics on NBC today

2016-08-07 Thread David Lynch
The thing that bothers me more and more as time goes on and social media
becomes more ubiquitous is that I can see people commenting on events that
are airing live on the BBC and CBC but won't air on NBC until prime time. I
don't object to the concept of prime time being a heavily-edited
compilation of the most TV-friendly events but I wish they didn't hold back
on airing those events live when they aren't in prime time, especially
since the online streams are somewhat difficult to find and navigate when
all of a day's events in a single sport are lumped together into a single
hours-long video.

That's how it generally works in central time for ABC and CBS on Sundays.
Network news at 5:00, local news at 5:30. NBC used to do the same but every
affiliate I checked has local news at 5:00 followed by Nightly News at
5:30, so I guess they stopped doing the earlier feed.

Saturdays, there's syndicated programming immediately after sports, then
local news airs after network news. My recollection was that if the network
runs a little bit over, the syndicated programming is joined in progress
followed by a full 30 minutes of network news starting at 5:30, but it
seems like that would be somewhat logistically complicated if they're also
doing an abbreviated broadcast 30 minutes after network programming ends
for the stations that air local news in that slot.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Takei hissed with "Beyond" director, writer

I'm pretty much in a similar place with it. On top of it not being Gene's
franchise anymore, it's not like rampant heterosexuality was one of Sulu's
defining characteristics the way it was with Kirk and later Riker and the
world has changed to the point where I'm sure that any writer who was as
devoted to diversity as Roddenberry was would have some character who is
not straight and/or not binary-gendered. It's a big blind spot that Trek
has had and the go-to excuse that it wouldn't fly commercially hasn't been
true since before Enterprise was on the air.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: How often does the NFL cause CBS or FOX to cut a show from the lineup?

2016-07-07 Thread David Lynch
My understanding with CBS is that CBS and Fox picked their policies because
of their big Sunday night shows. CBS wanted to always air 60 Minutes in its
entirety, Fox wanted to be consistent about broadcasting the first-run
episode of The Simpsons at 8:00.

Re: [TV orNotTV] How often does the NFL cause CBS or FOX to cut a show from the lineup?

2016-07-01 Thread David Lynch
AFAIK, the OT expands to fill whatever time is available, and runs until
the next show is scheduled to start. It's Fox's way of never running behind
schedule or joining shows in progress.

IIRC, the cut-off for CBS to bump the 10:00 show is something like 7:57:30.
I don't know what the plan is if they ever, through some extraordinary
circumstance, go much past 8:00.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Alec Baldwin hosting Match Game? No.

2016-06-30 Thread David Lynch
Rosie's opponent, Kathy Najimy, isn't exactly the highest-profile of
actresses either, but the two of them pretty much put on a masterclass in
how to play Pyramid (this is probably they were the only celebrities to
tape two episodes.)

A huge part of what made the mid-to-late 80s the golden age of Pyramid was
that they more or less rotated among the same 20-30 celebrities, and I'd
wager that, by the end of that time, Shelley Smith wasn't the only one who
was more famous for Pyramid than for anything else they'd done.

Does anyone know how far from true live-to-tape Colbert is? I had
previously gotten the impression that LSwSC is about as close as anyone
gets these days -- not timed to the second with how it goes out on air, but
shot in order in one take (unless there's a major screwup.)

Having every major story of the day available on the Internet basically
killed the model, as did the industry's decision that it mattered not only
how many people tuned in to your network but how long they watched. The
Weather Channel is a shell of its former glory days for similar reasons.

Also, it feels redundant when CNN is basically doing nothing but rolling
generalist news now. It was a little less so when there were non-newscast
shows like Larry King or Crossfire or single-subject shows like Lou Dobbs
or Inside Politics.

Being saved for midseason: Doubt, Training Day, Criminal Minds: Beyond
Borders, The Amazing Race, Undercover Boss, and Hunted.

Are any of the fall shows announced as having shorter than usual runs? Six
hours seems like a lot of room to have to clear up, even if we assume that
they shoehorn one of the reality shows into Wednesdays at 8 between the
fall and spring seasons of Survivor.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Amazing Race #28

2016-05-15 Thread David Lynch
I feel like there's been a shift in tone over the last few seasons,
beginning more or less when they started stunt-casting entire seasons. My
assumption is that it's an attempt to "keep it fresh", even though I
suspect that most of the fan base would be perfectly fine if Phil read out
"The detour is a choice between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons"
verbatim every week as he did early on.

One of the nice things about this season was that, after the first few
episodes, they more or less stopped talking about the "everybody is
internet famous" theme and just let the race be the race, and the teams
that made it that far were more or less standard-issue race teams: a few
long-term couples, a couple parent-child teams, and a couple teams of
platonic best friends. Also, it was nice that nobody got a villain edit or
even the "ugly American" edit -- the closest anyone got to that was the
double U-turn usage that was universally (among the contestants) considered
strategically sound but not very nice.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Eurovision Live on Logo NOW

2016-05-15 Thread David Lynch
Wherever Carson and Michelle were broadcasting from, it had all the
accoustics of a cardboard box.

There was also the great moment during the break between the performances
and the results when Justin Timberlake showed up, only to have Carson and
Michelle announce that they didn't have the rights to air JT's performance
so instead we were going to get a film about the history of Swedish pop and
an interpretive dance about the refugee crisis.

I have my suspicions that Logo getting the rights this year is MTV Networks
sticking its toe in the water to try to sell the idea of a future US entry
to both the American public and the Eurovision committee. (Apparently,
Justin Timberlake said something that gave other people that impression,
but I was not paying attention at that precise moment.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] Seattle's KING 5 (NBC) cleans house

2016-04-16 Thread David Lynch
It sounds like their corporate parent, Tegna, is really swinging the budget
axe, because there has been a similar exodus at their sister station KVUE
in Austin. The general manager, news director, and long-time chief
meteorologist all took the buyout offer. One evening anchor chose not to
renew his contract, ostensibly because his boyfriend's recent promotion to
a Dallas-based network correspondent has made it a lot harder for them to
be in the same city at the same time, and they've lost a few other
high-profile or long-term employees over the last few months.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Colbert live post Super Bowl review

2016-02-08 Thread David Lynch
I'd just like to know whether anyone in whatever department at CBS sends
out schedules to the listings services seriously thought that Colbert was
going to start at 10:00 Eastern, when the game didn't kick off until after
6:30. Usually, it seems like the post-game, post-ceremony shows are
scheduled for 10:30 and that usually ends up being overly optimistic. Based
on the timing of the start and Colbert running over his allotted hour, it
sounds like not even the 60 minutes of padding I put on my recording of
Corden before I went to bed will be enough to get all of it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Jeopardy! test problems (as opposed to answers or questions)

2016-01-27 Thread David Lynch
It seemed like it sat there forever trying to submit at the end for me but
I had no trouble getting in.

On a less technical note, I don't know if it was me being dense or the
material being poorly written, but I ended up with a couple blanks because
I had trouble understanding what some of the questions were asking for
within the time allotted. In once case, it was because it would have been
more readable (IMO) if a clause at the beginning of the clue had been
inserted later on, in another it was a matter of a combination of a very
minimal clue and a rather broad category (if it had been on the show, I
would have expected a "we'll give you the , you give us the "
explanation during the rundown.)

The best analogy I can come up with is to imagine if NBC cut the news and

Did nobody you know have the ability to take vacation or some other form of

option most of my friends and family used in order to not go to work.

I wouldn't say that it's normal to have an actual paid holiday on New
Year's Eve around here, but between holiday travel, the way that Austin's
culture is dominated by the University of Texas, state and local
government, and the tech industry (all of which are pretty generous with
the late-December holidays), I think we've hit a critical mass where people
have started taking time off because they feel like "everyone else" is off.

Re: [TV orNotTV] SportsTV: College f-ball bowl scheduling leads to sucky ratings

2016-01-04 Thread David Lynch
I saw something that unquestioningly reported that the College Football
Playoffs folks wanted to stake out New Year's Eve as a holiday for watching
college football in the way that the NFL has Thanksgiving and the NBA has
Christmas and completely ignored the fact that they already have New Year's
Day.

The Yahoo piece makes a good point about the first game being too early for
a day when some people are working a full day, but the thing that jumped
out at me on the day itself was the scheduling of the second bowl. it
started at 8:00 PM Eastern, and considering that college football games
without the additional pomp, circumstance, and ad time of a bowl have been
known to stretch past the four-hour mark, I feel like they were lucky to
get it all in before midnight. A friend based in the Mountain Time Zone
said on social media that it felt like he had to choose between a New Years
Eve party and football -- the 6:00 PM kickoff is too early to start a party
when you know that you're going to be there until after midnight, but the
roughly 9:45 PM end time was too late to try to go somewhere else after the
game.

[TV orNotTV] NFL Flexes week 17

2015-12-28 Thread David Lynch
With only one prime-time game, it goes to this week's supposed must-watch
of Minnesota-Green Bay, where the winner takes the NFC North title and the
loser is still in the playoffs as a wild card.

Also, Tampa at Carolina moves to 4:25 and Oakland at Kansas City gets
flexed from 1:00 on CBS to 4:25 on Fox (network switch per the Chiefs'
Twitter; don't see it mentioned elsewhere.)

I would assume that it could be considered to be a breach of the

Re: [TV orNotTV] NY station to battle news with news

2015-12-17 Thread David Lynch
I'm surprised that it's taken this long for someone to do it in New York.
Out here in central time, where the network newscasts are in the middle of
the evening news blocks rather than running anchor, it seems like it's a
pretty common practice among non-big-3 affiliates, including on WPIX's
sister station WGN.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review; The Expanse

2015-11-25 Thread David Lynch
(With apologies to Kevin for borrowing something that's usually his
feature.)

Syfy attempts a return to "hard" science fiction, and the apple hasn't
fallen far from the "Battlestar Galactica" tree. In a nod to the influence
premium TV has on prestige TV, there's zero G sex and bare (but strangely
nippleless) breasts within the first five minutes, with the assistance of
CGI that's less convincingly human than the new Fallout game.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Colbert Evolution Dept.

2015-09-29 Thread David Lynch
One thing I noticed with last night's episode and the portion of tonight's
episode that I've seen so far is that Stay Human sounds a lot more like the
typical late-night talk show band than they did before, particularly for
the music into and out of breaks and as guests walk out. I can't tell if
it's that they changed what they're playing, the mix, or both, although I'm
kind of leaning towards it being one of the latter two.

Re: [TV orNotTV] New camera for cbs

2015-09-18 Thread David Lynch
I actually thought CBS did pretty well at showing restraint on its use in
last night's matchup between the Chiefs and the Colts, although I did
notice one gratuitous shot of the pylon getting knocked over when it was
otherwise irrelevant to the play. And in last night's case, a touchdown
call got reversed when the pylon cam captured the player's knee on the turf
before the ball crossed the goal line, and it looked to me like that call
would have stood without it because of the runner's body blocking the view
of the ball from any camera mounted much higher.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Prison to be broken out of again on Fox

2015-08-08 Thread David Lynch
This strikes me as an interesting idea because the original was conceived
of as a limited-run series and, IMO, would have worked a lot better as one,
without the conspiracy stuff that seemed to be there just to guarantee that
there was some kind of through line between season one baddies and the ones
after the titular prison break.

Re: [TV orNotTV] TDS recap (SPOILERS)

2015-08-07 Thread David Lynch
One thing that I kept noticing was that Jon kept describing it as the end
of the show and not the end of his tenure with the show, and I felt like
the lengthy tribute to the backstage and back-office staff reenforced the
sense that it was the end of the show and not the end of an era. That felt
really strange to me, considering that my impression was that this
transition is more or less a hiatus in the otherwise-continuous production
of The Daily Show, and not a case of wrapping up one production and
starting a whole new one, as with Letterman/Colbert, Ferguson/Corden, or
O'Brien/Leno/Fallon.

I think Trevor Noah needs to revamp the show drastically and not do a poor

[TV orNotTV] Sábado Gigante to end

My quick translation of the first couple paragraphs below.

After 53 years on the air and almost 30 of them produced and broadcast in
the United States, the popular program Sábado Gigante, hosted by Don
Francisco, ends its successful run in September of this year. The
entertainment division of Univision, the network which has presented the
show since 1986 and which has brought it to more than 40 countries,
announced that the final program of its run will be broadcast on the 19th
of September, at the end of the 2014-2015 television season.

Sábado Gigante is the longest-running entertainment program in the history
of global television. Since 2001, when the show had completed 40 seasons,
the show has been in the Guinness Book of World Records. Curiously, the
origin of the show was a Sunday show, broadcast in August 1962.

2015-04-11 Thread David Lynch
Based on the videos on their web site, the Fox Philly look is the standard
FNC-inspired look for Fox OO stations, but since it rolled out several
years ago, the FNC graphics have gotten more obnoxious and the Fox OO
graphics have been tweaked to be less flashy, so they no longer look that
similar. About the only time you still see the FNC graphics that inspired
the OO look are when there's a big enough story going on that Fox News
produces a special report for the broadcast network.

I can't defend some of the jokes, but the entire thing to me had the

This also feels like one of the early rounds of some friction that I've
seen predicted for quite some time, between the internet native
generation's attitudes that social media posts are communications in and of
a moment and not necessarily meant for posterity and the established
feeling that anything that gets committed to writing, photo, or video under
your name sticks with you for all eternity. Something is going to have to
give there, but I don't know what will give or what norms will be once that
happens.

Given the way late night seems to be going, I wouldn't be shocked to see a
two-week-old episode as a rerun.

What surprises me a bit, now that I think about it, is that CBS didn't use
this opportunity to have Dave go dark for a couple nights and air Corden in
his regular time slot (+/- whatever delay there is due to sports) with a
local news lead in. It seems like a better option than a new episode at
1:30 on Saturday morning or rerunning after three days.
