[TV orNotTV] ESPN Dumps the Schwab

2013-06-19 Thread Mark Jeffries
Howie Schwab, the 26-year veteran researcher at the Worldwide Leader who
was the biggest genuine sports geek at a place that you think you would be
filled with sports geeks (and among, other things was rewarded for it by
becoming the Ben Stein of a game show called Stump the Schwab), has been
given the ax as part of the Disney-ordered corporate layoffs for seemingly
no other reason than too big a salary--but hey, how about that new
SportsCenter set that's costing perhaps how much they paid Schwab for his
26 years of service to the sports fans of America?:

Oh, yeah, Schwab's counterpart at ESPN the Magazine also got dumped. What
a time for Fox to start Fox Sports One...

2013-06-19 Thread David Bruggeman
I'm kind of surprised Schwab was still with the four-letter, given the
increasing emphasis on (occasionally informed) opinion in Bristol.  It's too
bad he's out the door, and it would be nice to see either the sports channels
at NBC or FOX grab Schwab and his print colleague.

Re: [TV orNotTV] ESPN Dumps the Schwab

2013-06-19 Thread Joe Hass
Quite simply, all that ESPN gives a rat's ass about right now is obtaining
sports properties and meeting Disney's profit goals (despite the obvious
conflict between the two points). Everything else is irrelevant.

As for FS1, I have a horse in this race, as fellow former The Scarlet
Letter (Athens High School, Troy, Michigan) writer Ryan Field got the call
from Fox Sports Detroit to do hosting work there. While I have a general
dislike of Fox Sports, I hope FS1 buries ESPN deeper than the Marina Trench.
