[TV orNotTV] Re: Half-OT: Changing hardware again

2011-10-26 Thread Bob in Jersey
The drive adapter arrived yesterday, and as much of our stuff as I
could find has been copied or moved.

I'm almost done with reinstalling the smaller apps.

ISTR either dad or bro wanted to keep the WinVista system on the old
drive, so this will need to be used at least one more time.

RE: [TV orNotTV] Re: Half-OT: Changing hardware again

2011-10-23 Thread Melissa P
Another fan of BH chiming in.

When I decided to upgrade my audio recording capabilities, BH had the
lowest price on the device I decided to buy, undercutting Amazon
considerably.

Since I had never heard of BH, after I clicked buy I had a moment of
misgiving, based on a terrible experience I had with a company in the UK
that sold me a product that arrived broken. Long story short: American
Express had to get involved (several times).

As I was picking up the BH package at the front desk of my building, one of
my neighbors saw the box and said BH was a wonderful company and that I
should check out its store in New York.

Well, I haven't made it there yet, but I was highly satisfied with the
online experience.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Half-OT: Changing hardware again

2011-10-20 Thread Bob in Jersey

Updating, I've restored our Juno accounts, with plenty of help from
something called 'juno5bdb', from a DVD to which I'd happily been
backing them up twice a week; sadly, the batch file I used to make the
backups is on the other HDD and damned if I can remember it in a
natural way. Juno as of the current version 8.8 also makes its own
backups, but only of the folder and message data, not addy-book. The
webmail accounts we also use were never affected.

The brand of the universal drive adapter I ordered is 'Apricorn.'

[TV orNotTV] Re: Half-OT: Changing hardware again

2011-10-19 Thread K.M. Richards
I have one of these:
http://www.meritline.com/kingwin-sataide-to-usb-adapter-for-25-and-35-drive-model-usi-2535---p-50793.aspx

It's useful for moving files off old hard drives, because it will
allow pretty much any hard drive from the 1990s to the present to be
temporarily connected to a machine via USB with its own drive letter.
From there, you use Windows Explorer to copy files onto your machine's
permanent hard drive.

And the price is right ($19.95 including shipping).

What it does not do is make an old drive into a semi-permanent
portable drive; if you want to keep the old drive as a backup, you
need to properly protect same from physical damage.

Well, little bro said he doesn't have the proper connections to mate
the old HDD to some other machine. He's apt to complain bitterly that
his day job doesn't enable him to do geeky stuff anymore, and that the
rest of the family are all ing tightwads. (No comment.)

Dad then went back to the BBY, where a Geek Squad tech quoted him a
typically-steep price for labour. My next idea is to ask our ISP,
which also has sales and service departments; the fact that we've
gotten our connectivity from them could lead to some kind of deal.

Failing that, aren't there connectors that enable one end of the drive
to be plugged in as if it were inside a computer case, but the other
end is a USB plug that goes into any current machine?

2011-10-18 Thread John caughman
You could search amazon or newegg or even Bestbuy for external hard drive
enclosures. That would let you access the data on the drive and continue to
use it for backup. Most hard drives are increasingly prone to failure
after 3 years. I would not advise leaving anything on the drive that you do
not want to lose.

Answering myself, there are, tho not very many places sell 'em; the
nearest to me is BH on the west side of Manhattan. Walmart.com, tho,
had an adapter into which a nekkid drive (of any of a number of diff.
types) could be plugged, also connecting with USB. About $35, and
little bro was impressed enough to think about getting himself one!

They make up for it by closing 1pm Friday, and not opening Saturdays.

They'll close early earlier in the week if a high holy day/period
ensues, as it is this week during Succos.

I have one that looks like a little box with a slot at the top, and the hard
drive is inserted into the slot. It then connects to the computer via USB
(it will also do eSATA, whatever that is, but I don't have the cable or the
port on my Mac Mini for it, to my knowledge). It also has 4 USB ports at the
front of the box, which is nice.

It's made by Aluratek, and I'm pretty sure I bought it at a Best Buy near
Montreal.

Correction on the HDD: 500 gigs. Only 3x the old one.
