Re: [TV orNotTV] Did Fallon need to introduce himself last night?

2014-02-19 Thread M-D November
Your math is off slightly. Three hosts of "Tonight" since Carson, but only two
(plus Dave) have "Late Night" on their resume. Leno never had his own TV gig -
his claim to Johnny's throne was his position as the final (permanent)
substitute host. Dave, Conan and Jimmy all carried a show for years, where Jay
worked a week at a time between Doritos ads.

[TV orNotTV] Re: WWE could switch channels again

2014-02-20 Thread M-D November
WWE is in an interesting position - for the first time, they've got both
major weekly properties (Monday Night Raw, currently on USA, and SmackDown,
currently on - ugh - SyFy) to shop in one deal. Prior to the existing
agreement, Raw & Smackdown were shopped separately, as SmackDown had been
an anchor on UPN/CW for a number of years before eventually migrating to
SyFy.

Interesting, too, because WWE is getting ready to launch their own
"network" (which isn't REALLY a network) in under a week, although that's
going to have more of a bearing on their relationship with cable/satellite
companies (see their current tiff with Dish over the next PPV) since a
WWENet subscription will include all monthly PPV events.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Late Night with Seth

2014-02-25 Thread M-D November
Point of clarification: Seth & Jimmy aren't across the hall from each
other. Jimmy is in 6B, Seth is in 8G - in 30Rock, the number is always the
floor on which the studio floor resides. (Hence, "Today" is in Studio 1A...)

Seth's next door neighbor is, obviously, SNL in 8H. Jimmy's 'neighbor',
right now, is the shell of his old studio, which IIRC will become the
Meredith Show's set in the fall.

1) agreed, but some Kickstarter users don't understand that they're not
buying a thing, they're supporting a project, and the thing is a gift.
2) no, an HD stream was not offered, simply a copy of the movie when
available on VOD. The original offer didn't commit to any particular format.

All that being said, I contributed to the project, and while I'm not
looking for a refund of any kind, I would *prefer *a code to download the

Re: [TV orNotTV] Letterman retiring in 2015, supposedly

2014-04-04 Thread M-D November
HuffPo TV is reporting that CBS courted Oliver to replace SCG in event he
didn't renew his contract, and Oliver
passed:
www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/04/john-oliver-late-night-cbs_n_5091150.html?utm_hp_ref=tv&ir=TV

- so that ship has probably sailed.

I honestly don't see Craig Ferguson moving to 11:30. If memory serves,
after Dave's most recent health scare (shingles?), he had said something to
the effect of 'I'll do it if it's an emergency, as a favor to the boss
[meaning Dave], but I really don't want 11:30'. I don't see CBS giving him
the kind of free reign at 11:30 that he has now. Also, his current LLS
taping schedule gives him the freedom to tour and play stand-up gigs - an
11:30 show won't have the kind of schedule that allows for anything but
working on the show (unless, of course, your name rhymes with "Kay Beno"
and you eat, sleep and piss jokes).

As much as he's the 'best' option, I don't see Stewart leaving Comedy
Central. And I don't see Conan leaving TBS, at least not until his
contract is up.

Actually, I have a name to add to the list - it's one that people probably
haven't thought of because he's not currently a talk show host, and he's
generally not widely regarded because he trades in the bluer side of
broadcast TV humor but...

What about *Seth MacFarlane*?

He's got a made-for-TV personality, he can sing and dance (his album of
American popular standards is actually quite good), and if his TV and movie
work is any indication, he's a guy who likes to explore the boundaries of a
genre. Plus, I've seen him in some really great interviews - presumably he
can get as good as he gives.

Possible downsides: his prior work would make him a controversial choice,
and there might be some celebrities who would shy away from appearing on
his show at first. But it's still not the worst idea ever
*COUGH*Chevy*COUGH*.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Options for Comedy Central

2014-04-10 Thread M-D November
None of the shows you mentioned (Key & Peele, Inside Amy Schumer, Kroll
Show, etc.) pair well enough with TDS to keep that hour in tact. TDS &
Colbert work as a unit because the two shows, despite differing styles of
satirizing the news, follow a similar vein. Installing a sketch show into
the 11:30 spot eliminates any possibility of topical humor that can tie
into what TDS covered at the top of the hour, and will almost certainly
result in viewers tuning out to Jimmy or Colbert. (Of course, it's
entirely likely the Colbert Nation will follow him anyway.) Similarly, you
can't just install @midnight at 11:30; aside from the obvious naming issue
(@eleventhirty?), I don't think it's a strong enough show to hold viewers.

My vote would be for Sam Bee or John Hodgman to take 11:30. Or maybe
something with Bee and Jason Jones, doing a play on Fox & Friends or the
other morning pundits-on-parade shows?

Take this with a grain of salt, but earlier on the "Today" show it came out
in the discussion of the Letterman/Colbert transition that Colbert had
timed the expiration of his CC contract to coincide with the end of Dave's
CBS agreement. Not sure how much truth there is there, but if true, then
Colbert has been thinking about this for a while.

I genuinely have no memory of Carrolla's show. So I'll revise my previous

Actually even some of the larger hotels I've stayed at recently (Hiltons

local cable signal. I think with the proliferation of mobile gaming and

their expiration date as amenities.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Craigyferg calls it quits

2014-04-28 Thread M-D November
I think it's more likely that Geoff has mechanical trouble from time to
time because he wasn't designed with his current use in mind. As Doug
mentioned, he started life essentially as a 360 Systems Instant
Replayconnected to a
skeleton. I'd imagine that in his original incarnation,
Geoff's mouth, neck & (then) one good arm probably saw about 1/8 as much
use on a nightly basis as they do now that JRT is providing a live voice
every night. Grant has given Geoff some incremental upgrades over time
(the second working arm, most notably...although his genitals are still
stuck at customs), but short of pulling Geoff from service for significant
upgrades or making a Geoff 2.0, I don't imagine Geoff's fragility would
change anytime soon.

There's no question that Osnes is talented, but to suggest she'd get an

I know a lot of people who got their AEA or SAG cards early in their

Re: [TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Last Week Tonight

2014-04-28 Thread M-D November
Finally got a chance to watch Episode 1 tonight on HBOGO (dealing with some
family stuff last night and forgot to set the DVR). I laughed a lot, but
yes, it did feel a bit like "TDS Weekend". Which isn't necessarily a bad
thing. I think bringing a touch of the familiar works for Oliver, because
it gives the audience what they expect to see, and got the show off to a
hot start. I'd have personally preferred a set that didn't evoke TDS quite
so much, and the format was a little too familiar, but now that he's
established, Oliver can start tweaking the format over the coming weeks.

[TV orNotTV] Re: KNBC's scaled down Universal newsroom named after Brokaw

2014-04-29 Thread M-D November
Two things:
1) I notice that both WNBC and KNBC have large (fake) "windows" behind the
anchor desk, presumably carrying realtime video from somewhere in the
viewing area (in NY, it's usually from one of the cameras atop 30Rock, tho
sometimes they use the angle that looks down over the Today Show plaza,
which is extremely off-putting). Is this some new corporate mandated set?
Do other O&Os use a similar set design?

2) "He was a fixture on NBC4, or as it was known then, KNBC." Are they
implying the call sign has changed?

[TV orNotTV] Re: NBC poaches the Bristol Bunch for new Today chief

2014-05-08 Thread M-D November
It couldn't hurt. "Today" needs help.

I've been watching more of "Today" since I started working from home at the
beginning of this year, and one thing struck me right away - the division
between hard news and infotainment doesn't exist anymore. It used to be
that the transition from news to infotainment was a gradual slide starting
from 7:30 until 9; now if they manage 10 minutes of actual 'news' in the
7:00 hour (and I don't mean anything involving a Kardashian), that's a good
day.

I'll come right out and say that the 4th hour dilutes the "Today" brand.
You want a clone of Kelly & Michael? Congratulations, you've got one
(minus the studio audience). But spin it off, give it to Peacock
Productions and call it something OTHER than "Today". Because right now,
NBC's breadwinner is less associated with news and information than it is
with two boozy middle-aged women drinking heavily at an inappropriate hour
of the day.

And as far as the 3rd hour...honestly, other than star power, if there's a
substantive difference between it and "Access Hollywood Live" (another show
that seems to exist only to block time on NBC O&Os), I haven't figured it
out.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Good news/bad news for Stargate fans

2014-05-30 Thread M-D November
Considering I've never met a person who says "I loved the Stargate movie
but never really liked the TV series", I don't see how this could be
anything but bad news.

FWIW, I'll agree that SGU was crap for 95% of its run - when the writing
was on the wall and the producers/writers realized that nothing they did
would get SyFy to uncancel the show, they finally got back to the business
of writing a Stargate series, and the final episodes were actually quite
good. Of course, by that point the damage was done.

But in defense of SGU, I don't entirely blame the production team, because
I strongly suspect they were under pressure from SyFy to make SGU more
BSG-like. Of course, in a perfect world, SGU would never have launched and
SG: Atlantis would have been allowed to continue.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Fox Cans 'Riot' and 'Harry'

2014-06-12 Thread M-D November
Can't say I'm surprised about either of these cancellations. I didn't bother
with "Harry", but as an improv devotee I had set a series recording for "Riot".
After watching the pilot, I came away with the impression that it was trying
too hard to be "high concept Whose Line", and the added bells and whistles (the
trademark 22-degree stage for Slideshow, the bungee cord gimmick in A Bunch of
Jerks, which itself was three WHIIA games smashed together) just got in the way
of the performers and made things generally unfunny. I pretty much gave up on
the show after the episode with Andy Dick (who apparently has never heard the
"yes, and..." rule) and Tom Green as guest performers.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Leno to receive Mark Twain Prize

2014-06-20 Thread M-D November
Disagree - mainly because TV executives are demo-obsessed douchebags in any
reality.

Assuming Conan still gets Late Night when Dave takes over Carson's show, and
assuming Dave threw some serious support behind Conan, I still see Conan taking
over the Tonight Show (albeit sometime around now rather than in 2009) because
even edgy alternate reality Leno would be considered "too old" to retain the
demo against the competition by 2014. CBS will still have pulled the trigger
on a late night show at some point, realizing the potential revenue from the
daypart, possibly bringing over Arsenio's show from syndication or grabbing
some SNL talent from NBC. (Who here wouldn't have watched "Late Show with Phil
Hartman"?) I'm also thinking Jon Stewart still goes to TDS, although he could
have been considered for the CBS job (or so the Larry Sanders Show would lead
us to believe).

Of course, when Conan moves up to Tonight, someone still has to take over Late
Night, and assuming Lorne is still Master of his Domain and the SNL landscape
isn't too different, Fallon would still be in good position for taking that
spot.

Really, the guy who loses most from the "Dave gets Tonight" scenario is Craig
Ferguson, who probably doesn't get the opportunity at 12:35 since there's no
Snyder > Kilborne transition. And who wins most (other then Dave)? Bob Costas,
who is allowed to continue Later as the spiritual successor to Tom Snyder's
Tomorrow Show.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Semi-OT: The Bugle podcast goes dark

2014-06-23 Thread M-D November
I was thinking the same thing, and with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival coming
up, maybe it seemed like a reasonable time for a hiatus?

While I have no doubt that Oliver himself has more responsibilities
carrying his own show than he did when he was one of a team at TDS, he's
also a lot more stationary now (TDS would have him out for actual remotes
on a regular basis, whereas the only remote he's done since LWT started
airing was to visit Stephen Hawking at Cambridge.) You'd think that'd make
him more available, not less.

[TV orNotTV] Re: No more 'Nightmares' from Ramsay

2014-06-24 Thread M-D November
I haven't seen a recent episode of the UK series, which I've always
preferred because it lacked the Darnell-isms (overly serious VO from
someone who wasn't Ramsey, smash-cut editing, etc.), so I'm not sure how
well that's aged. As for the US version, I'm not upset to see it end. The
most recent season spent too much time on the personalities of the owners
and not enough on the rehab of both the staff and the facility - and
relaunch is relegated to the last 3/4 of a segment. I'll miss it, because
it wasn't a competition show, but not much. Plus it'll run forever in
reruns on cable.

Well, sure. But from what I can tell, all of the former G4ers have moved on
to greener (if not more lucrative) pastures. Olivia Munn and Alison
Haislip are both acting, Kevin Pereira has moved into the production side
of the business, Morgan Webb is a consultant for Activision Blizzard (the
World of Warcraft people), Adam Sessler is a video game
talking-head-for-hire (best as I can tell), Blair Herter works for DC
Comics (and is married to Jessica Chobot!), and of course, Chris Hardwick
has the Nerdest media empire.

The only one I can't find anything on is Candace Bailey, who succeeded Munn
on AOTS.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Fallon has the lowest percentage of guest talk

2014-07-14 Thread M-D November
I've been doing some thinking on this topic...

Ever since I changed jobs and started working from home in December, I've
been watching more network late-night; typically I'll watch Fallon (and
occasionally Myers) on demand, and Craig in real-time. (My viewing of Dave
is a bit more sporadic, but as has been discussed here, he really hasn't
changed his tune for a while.) The thing that strikes me the most about
Fallon's show is, while it's true that the show is less
interview-intensive, the guests seem to genuinely be having a good time for
the segment or two they're out on stage with Fallon. Maybe that's Fallon's
enthusiasm, maybe it's the 'extracurriculars' (the sketches & games), or
maybe it's the fact that - like SCG - Fallon seems less inclined to talk
about the project the guest is supposed to be plugging. I dunno. But it's
clear the people on my TV are enjoying themselves, and as a viewer, that
makes me want to keep watching.

As far as the "Carson Template" goes, don't forget that in his earlier
days, Carson did sketches (the "Mighty Carson Art Players" bits, Art Fern,
Carnac, etc.) and games ("Stump the Band") in his earlier years, so maybe
Fallon isn't as far off from the "Carson Template" as many would think. I
know that the Carson I would see as a kid on "Carson's Comedy Classics"
only had a vague resemblance to the Carson who hosted "Tonight" through my
junior year of high school - I imagine part of that was age, part was job
security (/show ownership), and maybe a little bit of it was complacency
(since he was the only game in town).

What I'm saying is that the Carson from the late 70's, sitting on the dais
with Ed and, say, Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise, probably wouldn't be able
to recognize the Carson who sat on that stool in May of 1992 and gave his
fond farewell. But that's to be expected. Carson had 30 years in the job,
and therefore 30 years to edit his "template" to where he needed it to be
for immediate relevance. True, Fallon isn't half the interviewer Johnny
was, but assuming NBC sticks with him, he's got time to grow into the role
(albeit not as much as Carson had, with the timeslot as saturated as it
is). Right now, Fallon brings to 11:35 something that was utterly lacking
from Leno's reign - younger viewers, either live, DVR, online or even in
clip form - so for that reason I'd say what Fallon is doing is working. I
would fully expect that, at some point as Jimmy (and his audience) grows
older, the games will change (anything resembling beer pong will fade away,
I'm sure), and his interviews will get better, in part because he'll have
more of a relationship with the people he's interviewing (remember, his
best interviews are usually SNL alums or frequent guests, or people he's
worked with in films).

I think of what you describe more as "popular" media. Viral media, at least in
the strictest sense, is never created with the thought "we're going to make
this go viral" in mind. "Popular" media is often shared in the same channels as
viral media, but comes from a place of intentional mass consumption.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Semi-NotTV: Car Racing Death

2014-08-11 Thread M-D November
Here's something I don't understand (and, admittedly, my knowledge of
NASCAR is limited to a ill-advised purchase of EA NASCAR 2002 and the movie
"Talladaga Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby") - in looking at the
pre-accident footage that ran on the news yesterday, it appears as though,
after exiting his car, that Ward was crossing the track and pointing
aggressively at a driver (possibly Stewart) and intentionally trying to
cross through traffic, rather than staying by his car in (relative) safety.
Why would any driver try to cross the track with a caution lap in
progress, and would we be asking about criminal action, etc. if it had been
a different driver to strike Ward on the caution lap?

Re: [TV orNotTV] Tonight's Ferguson repeat

2014-08-11 Thread M-D November
I started seeing confirmed reports around 7:15pm EDT, so it's a safe assumption
that the NYC-based shows were ether in the can or in progress. I seem to
remember seeing Chris Hardwick (Fallon's 2nd guest) tweet that he found out
about it backstage after the taping. I wouldn't be shocked if they kept the
news from Fallon until after the show wrapped.

As for SCG, I assume he wasn't available to shoot a replacement cold open for
tonight's rerun or to explain why it's not really a great day for America.
Comcast's OSG shows Craig's next new episode next Monday night; hopefully he
throws out the format and brings in someone close to Robin (like Billy
Crystal?) to just talk for an hour - especially since Craig knows a thing or
two about fighting demons re: drugs & alcohol.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Tom Werner an outsider in MLB commish derby

2014-08-14 Thread M-D November
Unless I missed something, the only way to eliminate the scourge of season-long
Interleague play (I'm not counting cross-town rivalry series like the old
Mayor's Trophy/Subway Series in NY, which I wouldn't mind once a year, but not
for a home & home), MLB would need to add at least one expansion team to
restore even numbers to the two leagues...

Which begs the question...where would that expansion team go? What would be a
good mid-major market with enough distance from another MLB team that might be
a good candidate? (I'm going to assume that the northeast, Florida, Texas and
California are automatically eliminated based on existing team density.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] If you want your late night at the dinner hour?

2014-08-16 Thread M-D November
A possibly related question: who "owns" Geoff? My wife and I were talking about
SCG's post-LLS plans, and my wife asked if Geoff would be the announcer on
"Celebrity Name Game", but I wasn't sure who Geoff belongs to...CBS? Worldwide
Pants? Craig? Grant Imohara?

IIRC, Fallon also won for Best Guest Actor, Comedy for his hosting stint on
SNL last December. (Although in reality, that Emmy ought to be shared with
Timberlake.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] If you want your late night at the dinner hour?

2014-08-18 Thread M-D November
Here's what I find odd: WPIX/11 in NY has started to run ads for Celebrity
Name Game, which will air weeknights at 7:30. If they're now talking about
giving SCG a talker at 7...are they just handing over the whole hour to
Ferguson? (Not that I'd mind more Craig on my TV, but that would interfere
with watching Jeopardy...)

Incidentally, no Geoff in the CNG promo.

[TV orNotTV] Re: If you want your late night at the dinner hour?

2014-08-19 Thread M-D November
To be clear, I'm not expecting Geoff to show up in any of Craig's post-LLS
projects. Geoff is clearly part of Craig's deliberate deconstruction of
the late night format, and I don't know how well he would play at, say,
prime access.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Live from New York, no longer

2014-08-19 Thread M-D November
My best guess - since NBC doesn't exactly have 'staff announcers' anymore -
is that Steve Higgins (former SNL writer, now Fallon's sideman on
"Tonight") fills in temporarily while Lorne finds a suitable replacement
voice. After all, Higgins is in the building and has a good understanding
of what the SNL open should sound like.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Live from New York, no longer

2014-08-19 Thread M-D November
Well, sure. When Don Pardo was sick, you wanted someone who sounded like
Don Pardo to do the open.

Since Don Pardo is no longer among us, you don't want to have someone doing
a (IMHO) hollow imitation of a once-great voice. I'd rather they find
someone who can find the same power and tonal quality while making it their
own.

So I don't personally think Hammond has an 'in'. (Also, there are all of
the other really good reasons why Darrell Hammond should stay as far away
from SNL as he can...for his own health.)
