Thanks Wendy. I'll look at how to implement using this. Because I'm new to UniData I've really only done a uni.command and parsed the response. That was fast but not very robust. I am planning to take a class in Denver next month but I think you may have given me a jump start. Thanks again. Hi all, this is my first post to the board, so a big "Hi" to you all! I'm probably showing off my lack of knowledge here, but I hope someone might have the knowledge I seek, so... I have been tasked with creating reports from our UniData system using UniQuery. For building queries, I have been given a tool called PARADEX. This tool seems extremely ancient to me. The interface is extremely cumbersome. To edit anything, special commands are employed to edit my queries, one line at a time. I'm already fairly lost in the system, so the last thing I need is cumbersome tools to make my life even more difficult. I like things to be easy peasy. :) So, my questions are: 1. Is there a better way to run these queries? and 2. Is there a better query editor; text-based or GUI or both? Thank you all! Michael T. RE: [U2] [UV] Weird error.
Jak There's a patch for a SYS.MESSAGE issue in recent releases - check the release notices: 10.1.15 7883In certain circumstances, UniVerse may have incorrectly written information from the SYS.MESSAGE file into other files. This may have caused the header or a primary group of the file to be overwritten, resulting in file corruption. This problem has been fixed. I am developing some GNU Emacs packages to make working in the ECL command line easier. I use it every day for writing, compiling, &c Unibasic code. It provides (through Emacs' comint mode) command line history (it keeps your whole session in an emacs buffer), edition of any record in an Emacs buffer, a modified version of Pat Thoyt's Unibasic mode, and quite a few other improvements over ECL/AE. You can get a copy on sourcefourge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/u2-mode I have not been able to get it working in the windows version of Emacs (I use cygwin at work, and Linux at home), and the setup is somewhat awkward. Re: [U2][UV]Low user count Universe license available?
Donnie, Unless your friend needs to test his software using very large files and/or under concurrent user loads greater than 2 users, he can use the PE version. According to the IBM web site, re the Personal Edition: "This edition is designed for single-user personal development and training as well as sales demos. It is not for remarketing or use in production environments." I think that "to see the differences in the windows vs linux versions and see how the performance compared" would be considered both "personal development and training". Otherwise, he can request an evaluation version *at no charge* with more than 2 user licenses (I don't know what the user limit is or if there is one), and the evaluation version does not have the file-size restrictions of the PE version. The evaluation version license is limited to 60 days, but it can be renewed. It sounds to me like your friend needs to have another talk with his vendor to get the full story on what his options are. We're an IBM Reseller, and we'll be glad to help if we can. Their commercial product runs on the linux version. I think the goal was to see the differences in the windows vs linux versions and see how the performance compared. RE: [U2] Is there a Better Editor?
First, one comment, I believe that SE is an editor provided by System Builder rather than directly in UniData. As far as other Editors, if you are looking to work on items that are stored in a DIR type file I would recommend UltraEdit. This is a function rich Windows based editor. You can communicate with Unidata via FTP. I have had no problems doing this. You can also get a configuration file that allows you to have syntax highlighting for UniBasic. Others have posted suggestions for external tools, but assuming you don't have access to these, there are some things you can do within UniData to simplify your life a bit. There are three editors that come with UniData: ED, AE and SE. ED and AE are line editors, and AE is the more powerful one. Our system has ED remapped to AE, so we don't use ED at all. SE is a screen editor, and some find it easier to use. If you are setting up queries that you need to run on a regular basis, consider using UniData Paragraphs. These can be run from the TCL prompt as commands once they're written. Paragraphs are stored in VOC, and are similar to DOS Batch files. You can specify parameters and save queries for future use. You can also put several commands together to create a process. There are a few native ones that you can look at for reference. Here are three from our UniData/AIX system. LISTDICT is used to list dictionary items. The syntax is LISTDICT [LPTR] Top of "LISTDICT" in "VOC", 8 lines, 317 characters. 001: PA 002: IF <> = '' THEN GO L100 003: IF <> = 'LPTR' THEN GO L200 004: IF <> # 'lptr' THEN GO L100 005: L200: SORT DICT <> TYP LOC CONV MNAME FORMAT SM ASSOC BY TYP BY LOC BY @ID LPTR 006: GO DONE 007: L100: SORT DICT <> TYP LOC CONV MNAME FORMAT SM ASSOC BY TYP BY LOC BY @ID 008: DONE: * Note that Attribute 1 is set to PA to indicate that this is a paragraph. The lines after that are processed. Parameters are specified using double angle brackets, and contain two fields. The first field indicates the parameter type (I=Required Input, C=Conditional Input) and position. The second field is a prompt to identify the parameter, and will be used if a required input is not specified. I wrote LP to list print jobs waiting to print in our AIX queues. If no queue is specified, all items in all queues are listed, otherwise only the specified queue is listed. Note that I'm executing AIX commands from TCL by prefixing the command with the "!" character. Top of "LP" in "VOC", 6 lines, 96 characters. 001: PA 002: IF <> = '' THEN GO L100 003: !lpstat -p<> 004: GO DONE 005: L100: !lpstat | more 006: DONE: * CP is a simple paragraph to alias the SPOOL command. Top of "CP" in "VOC", 2 lines, 38 characters. *--: P 001: PA 002: SPOOL <> <> Check the manuals for more help, or feel free to drop me a line off-list. --Tom Pellitieri Toledo, Ohio --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/

RE: [U2][UV]Low user count Universe license available?
They currently have universe on linux with a 200-300 user license. I think he's just wanting to do some testing / experimenting with the windows version. Are there limitations with the personal editions with regards to file sizes / record counts / etc.. He tends to deal with LARGE files. They make heavy use of distributed files with record counts getting into the several million range. If there are no such limitations, then the personal edition may be an option. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ross Ferris Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 6:04 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: RE: [U2][UV]Low user count Universe license available? [U2] Universe GUI Editor
Interesting weekend with the Universe GUI Editor.. Saddled with the task of doing "off hours" work this past weekend I had the pleasure of having the Universe GUI Editor ftp'ing a null record overwriting my changes to the server. Of course this was in combination with my VPN connection puking at the time.I'm not sure which was the chicken, or the egg I only know that one was rotten. Of course I had skipped my usual practice of saving changes to my laptop hard drive first before moving it only to have to make the changes over...my only excuse is that tweaking a program at 3AM sometimes leads to you trying shortcuts. I won't do that again. ~ Debbie "Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm" -Syrus Publilius www.infinite-systems.net --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
RE: [U2] Is there a Better Editor?
Oh we'll get hundreds on response to this I bet For what its worth We use MVQuery for queries, its drag and drop no real knowledge required, we even let out accoutnants loose with it and UniDebugger as the editor Bob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Caskey, Michael Sent: 21 February 2006 23:10 To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: [U2] Is there a Better Editor? Michael T.
