Re: [U2] VI on Windows UniVerse

2007-03-30 Thread Ray Wurlod
Create the same UV.VI verb that UniVerse on UNIX has. It could be a paragraph
or PROC, but a BASIC program (verb) is likely to be more robust. This sets a
READU lock on the record and copies it to /tmp using a generated and guaranteed
unique name. It then invokes vi on the file in /tmp and waits till vi exits
before comparing the old and new versions. If there is a change, the original
record is updated/deleted. In all cases the READU lock is released before
returning control.

Re: [U2] PARAGRAPHS

2007-03-30 Thread Ray Wurlod
Transfer the paragraph text to your account directory.
Within UniVerse execute COPYI FROM &UFD& TO VOC filename, paraname

&UFD& is a pointer to the current user file directory - in this case your
account directory.
paraname in the above context is what you want to call the paragraph in your
VOC, filename is the name of the file you transferred: if they are the same,
just paraname will suffice.

Once the transfer has been confirmed as successful, you can delete the file
from the account directory.

Re: [U2] Re: [UV] New to UV/PICK, programming a banner

2007-03-30 Thread Ray Wurlod
STOP behaves like STOPM in non-Pick flavor accounts and like STOPE in Pick
flavor accounts.
M says get the stop message text from the statement.
E says get the stop message from the ERRMSG file.

There is no intermediate prompting in either case.

RE: [U2] FILE EXPORT

2007-03-30 Thread John Jenkins
Anita

You can look at:

1. UniVerse replication (not "hot standby")
2. MQ series API - possibly from a trigger
3. BCI (requires a real-time link)

If the file is an O/S file (BP usually contains program code and is not a
hashed file) you can use a cron job in conjunction with find and rcp or ftp
(Unix) or a similar Windows Scheduler job in Windows.

This covers moving DATA from one system to another and also O/S level files.

If however you want to CREATE hashed files based upon the activity on the
primary system then O.S level functions are best (for now...).

You would need to (at intervals via cron or scheduler)

1. SUSPEND.FILES ON
2. SAN SNAP or MIRROR split or (if low volume) local copy.
3. SUSPEND.FILES OFF
4. Copy the off-lined files (SAN snap, Split mirror or local copy) to the
remote system. Remember the VOC as well if you want to copy the file
pointers.

These may well be overkill - it depends on what you want and we would need
some detail. You would need to know how to set up the facilities you choose
as well. My recommendation (based on the sort of questions being asked) is
that you get a specialist in to advise you. Your requirement is either
fairly simple or quite complex and it's difficult to see which as "the devil
is in the detail".

JayJay

This is ridiculous. I would advise everyone to not answer any more of this
persons questions. If the companies involved are not willing to invest in a
connection between to two systems or provide a means of getting the files to

the other system then there are two reasons.
Either they are too cheap to do it, or, this is the reason to stop answering

questions, this may be software piracy. In the latter we, by helping this
individual, would be aiding and abetting. If it is the former then they
shouldn't even be in business.

[U2] Large Unidata Windows Sites

2007-03-30 Thread Moderator

REPOSTED FOR NON-MEMBER: Bjvrn Eklund <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi there,
I'm curious if there are any large sites running Unidata on Windows out there.
With large I mean sites with more than 400 concurrent users. We are on Solaris
today but have trouble getting staff with Unix competence these days so we are
looking onto the possibility of moving to Windows 2003.

TIA

RE: [U2] UD PE limitations

Dave

UV PE imposes a maximum modulus for a file.
You can set a stupidly large separation if you must hold large amounts of data,
but of course your performance will crumble.

If you need to copy a large file with a higher modulus across from a non-PE
system, you need to resize on the originating system as you can't open it to
resize on PE.

Brian

I know there are limitations in the personal editions of UD/UV, but can't
for the life of me remember what they are, and I can't find them on IBM/U2UG

This is assuming that you have Notepad and your client (SBClient,
wIntegrate, etc.) on the same machine.

In Notepad, do "Edit > Select All", then "Edit > Copy" to place the
information on the clipboard.

Go to the UniVerse window, type in "ED VOC PARA.WORDS ". Type in the
letter "I". Go to "Edit > Paste". This will copy the contents of the
clipboard to the input buffer in the line editor. Hit to go from the
"Input" mode to the "Edit" mode, and file the item.
If this is a PAragraph, the 1st line will need to start with the letters
"PA".

>Whwn I create a paragraph in which location is it stored.

The actual item is stored in the VOC file. The VOC file is a "cooked" file
... that is, you cannot see the individual items in the file unless you are
using the UniVerse engine as the driver (hence, the ED VOC PARA.WORDS).

I'll post my questions once again.
I know that STOP stops the current program and if in a PROC or paragraph,
 it
simply continues to the next program. LIkewise for TCL.
My question is "Does the M in STOPM cause any intermediate prompting for
 the
user to acknowledge the errmsg?" Otherwise, what's the purpose of the M
 and
 why bother.

Re: [U2] FILE EXPORT

2007-03-30 Thread brian
Anita

1. You can do this at the OS level in SOME circumstances -

UniVerse holds individual data files as separate operating system files. these
can be copied directly from one machine to another provided they are the same
operating system type and with the following restrictions:

(you can get around them all, but you would need to know what you are doing).

There are three types of data file structure used by UniVerse at the OS level:

Directory Files (e.g. BP files)
Hashed Data Files
Dynamic File

for directory files, as said earlier, the content can be copied directly.

Hashed Data files are single O/S files. if you do a LISTF command, you can see
the paths to each of the data files. These can be copied directly so long as
no-one is using them at that moment, and so long as there are no indexes, or
you will have to rebuild the indexes on the target machine. use LIST.INDEX
filename ALL to see the indexes.

Dynamic files are directories containing files called DATA.30 and OVER.30.
These can't be copied safely without stopping UniVerse first.

2. As a backup

The UniVerse backup commands are uvbackup and uvrestore. These can create a
record-level backup to an O/S file that can be zipped and emailed. Check out
the admin guide (pdf) to see how to use these two commands. They are the safest
way to do this.

3. Using tools

It's probably overkill unless you are doing this frequently, but you can use a
tool like mvInstaller (www.brianleach.co.uk) to create a setup package that can
be deployed on the target machine. It's windows based and simple to use.

Same way in Universe how do I copy the contents of a file from one

This is ridiculous. I would advise everyone to not answer any more of this

the other system then there are two reasons.
Either they are too cheap to do it, or, this is the reason to stop answering

STOPM simply allows a text message to be added. STOPM "File not opened!"

add a text message to the STOP command. The M does not force an input

Do you have a connection to both machines from one PC
If so then you can use a terminal emulator like Wintegrate to do a
"bridge copy" or some people call it a "peer to peer" copy. You have two
sessions, one contacted to each machine, you tell your emulator what you
want to copy and where you want it to go and set it running. I have done
this in the past when working on remote machines.

RE: [U2] PARAGRAPHS

2007-03-30 Thread Brad Moll - Incoming News
The simplest way, as long as it is not too long, is to copy it in notepad,
edit the record in universe and start inserting a line, once you do that,
just paste the contents and all of your code will be inserted, hit return to
end the insert and then FI to file it and the proc has been created.

Paragraphs are just items in any particular file. It is the first line of
the paragraph that makes it a paragraph. Just put it in any file and make a
pointer to the paragraph in the VOC/MD and you should be all set.

RE: [U2] PARAGRAPHS

2007-03-30 Thread brian
Anita

Although paragraphs are often created in the VOC, this is not the best place
for them.

You can put paragraphs anywhere so long as you create a pointer to them.

A better way - and probably easier for you to update - is to do the following:

1. Create a directory file e.g. called PARAS

The syntax for this depends on your account flavor, so to double check the
account flavor you are running, first type:

.L RELLEVEL

If the result includes PICK or REALITY use:

CREATE.FILE PARAS 1,1 1,1,19

If it includes INFORMATION or IDEAL use:

CREATE.FILE PARAS 19

2. This creates a new directory at the O/S level called PARAS.

Copy the paragraph directly into the new PARAS directory (explorer, FTP etc)

Use that directory for all your paragraphs, then they are kept nicely together
in once place and easily accessible.

3. In the VOC edit a 3 line Remote pointer as follows:

ED VOC MyParagraph
New Item
I
001=R
002=PARAS
003=MyParagraph
004=
FI

Regards,

Brian

PS Can you see whether you have a product called UniDK Or UniObjects on your
PC? If so, I have a simple Windows based editor that may help you. It's work in
progress (ie unfinished) but it works - email me off-list if you want a copy.

RE: [U2] PARAGRAPHS

2007-03-30 Thread Richard Sammartino
Anita, there are a couple of ways to do this. One way would be to ftp the
notepad item from your pc to a universe directory and then copy the contents
into a record in the VOC file. Another way would be to cut and paste the
data into the VOC record. This method may not work depending on how the
notepad item was created.

Paragraphs are typically created in the VOC file via the editor.
Typically, not always.

Since PARA.WORDS was created in notepad, it's a text file. Store it
anywhere on the system. Create a file pointer to the directory that
it's stored in. Open it up with your editor, file it in your VOC. Or
use the COPY command.

Open it in word.
File; Save As xyz.txt in the BP directory
change the file name

I've been reading your questions, and I have a question of my own.
Where is your area of expertise? It quite evidently isn't Universe, but
it appears that it's not in general systems either. So, what can I use

I know that STOP stops the current program and if in a PROC or paragraph, it
simply continues to the next program. LIkewise for TCL.

My question is "Does the M in STOPM cause any intermediate prompting for the
user to acknowledge the errmsg?" Otherwise, what's the purpose of the M and
why bother.

A BP file is simply a directory. So you can copy files from one BP directory
and place them in the other without having to tell UniVerse anything special
about them. UniVerse will find them.
