Re: [U2] [UV] I descriptor help

2007-10-03 Thread Richard Taylor
Jim,

You have two choices:

First you can pass in @RECORDxx where xx is the attribute number you want
to work on.

The other way is to not pass anything at all. The Global UV variables
@RECORD and @MV are available in your program too. You could reference
them directly. Of course this would make your routine less flexible if that
is a consideration here.

In either case remember that in UV you are dealing with the entire
Multivalued field not just one value mark position. If your intent is to
create data that is a correlated multivalue also then you must pass back a
multi-valued field not a single value.

I need to call a basic subroutine to process a field. The field in the
record is a multivalued field. How do I pass that field to the called
subroutine ?

The field is PARTNO which is defined as a MV field. I want to call a
subroutine such as SUBR('ZGET.PCODE',@RECORD,@MV). I have them associated
in
the same PH record.

RE: [U2] PC Miler Web Services Interface

2007-10-03 Thread David Beahm
Glad to hear they now have a web services interface; I tried to work
with them to wrap their API with a Java web service a few years ago, but
the Java API relied on JNI/native code that had a 60 second delay during
initialization. Obviously something was timing out, but it worked for
them so they stopped responding to my emails. I didn't consider it the
best solution for our situation anyway, and the project was
(permanently) set aside.

PC Miler is still running as part of our operations, but as part of a
turnkey solution (it just calculates overall mileage for TruckMaster).
One of the features that made it less relevant was that it mostly
operated at the city level instead of optimizing routes within a city.
I see they now have a Streets version; I will keep this in mind, as that
and the web services combined could make it worthwhile to us if this
becomes a priority again.

David Beahm

Does anyone on this list have any experience building an interface
from Universe Basic (Windows - Ver 10.1.3) to PC Miler's new web
services solution?

If so, did you find performance to be satisfactory and could you
provide us some direction in the programming/implementation?

Your best bet is to go with a list of resellers. They might be looking for
talent for their product development, and would usually know if any of their
customers are as well. Finding a list of folks that sell Multivalue products
might be easier to find.

Just a thought.

It would be nice if IBM setup a 'Cert Central' similar to what RedHat have
for their certified RHCE,RHCT, RHCA etc. for people and consultants who have
done the exams.

See https://www.redhat.com/training/certification/ for a list of what RedHat
offers.

It could also be one way to solve the access to support resolutions issue
that was discussed some months back.

[U2] [SBS] Usage of a semicolon in a string within a paragraph

2007-10-03 Thread David Murray
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this weird issue:

UniVerse PE 10.2.0 on Linux, Pick Format account

SB+ Server PE 5.4.1.4022

In a Paragraph:

EQUATE SEMICOLON TO ;

Will not save (F2) and returns an 'error in expression'

Also:

@VALUE = ;

Returns the same error.

Actually, any expression which includes a semicolon as a ; (double
quotes) or a ';' (single quotes) is an error.

I cannot remember ever coming across this error before in previous versions
of SB+ Server. I actually cannot remember if I ever wanted a semicolon as a
string before either.

Cheers,

David Murray

Re: [U2] PC Miler Web Services Interface [ad] and answer of course

2007-10-03 Thread Moderator

All,
There seems to be some confusion about the reason for [AD] brackets
[/AD]. Here's the rationale:

If I have a bad back and Mary Jones says 'use Tiger Balm' it
would be useful to know if Mary suffers from bad backs or if Mary sells
Tiger Balm.

Now, some people, my twin brother Tony being notable amongst
them, have pointed out that they sell and write software they believe in
and therefore would make the same recommendations either way. I respect
that. However, if Chuck Barouch says 'use Zeus' I think I deserve to
know that he has a financial interest in my selecting that option.
Just to be clear: [AD] is not [SPAM] and making money is a good
thing.

RE: [U2] [SBS] Usage of a semicolon in a string within a paragraph

2007-10-03 Thread Dave Davis
EQUATE SEMICOLON TO CHAR(59)

Or better yet put this in as a row in the /EXP.EQU list:

EE_SEMICOLONCHAR(59)

Semicolon is an absolute statement separator in SB+.

2007-10-03 Thread Daniel Perttula
David - as a workaround, try using the ascii code for ; instead, ie:

@VALUE = CHAR(59)

Hope that helps,
Dan

How about

EQUATE SEMICOLON LITERALLY ;

I work in Unidata. Don't know if it is the same.

RE: [U2] PC Miler Web Services Interface

2007-10-03 Thread Tony G
The PC Miler TCP interface can be wrapped in a web service for use anywhere
in your local environment. One benefit to this is that each new client
doesn't need a direct pipe into the data, and you can use whatever tools or
languages with which you're comfortable to make use of the product.
Another benefit is that this allows you to use your own resources for
serving data to remote clients (truckers with GPS/PDAs, clients, etc)
without relying on the (for-fee) services from PC Miler. And another
benefit is that you can wrap queries with your own rules so that All
interfaces call through your rules - compared to having different queries
from different clients executing their own version of your rules, and some
not executing your rules at all.

Regarding the initialization delay, this can probably be handled through
use of a special proxy, not just standard Java RMI. A Virtual Proxy
(design pattern) can keep clients from timing out when the server is busy
instantiating large objects, loading large data volumes, performing long
operations, etc.

Of course none of this is unique to the PC Miler software or any language
or tools you use to interface that into U2. The same principles apply to
anything you can plug into.

Glad to hear they now have a web services interface; I tried to work
with them to wrap their API with a Java web service a few years ago,
but the Java API relied on JNI/native code that had a 60 second delay
during initialization. Obviously something was timing out, but it
worked for them so they stopped responding to my emails.
