[U2] URGENT: BCI driver configuration / column binding issues

2007-11-23 Thread David Beahm
We are upgrading from an HP-UX 64 bit PA-RISC server running UD 7.1 to
an HP-UX 64-bit Itanium server, and are having serious issues with BCI.

We use Easysoft ODBC-ODBC bridge, however we can connect properly and do
not believe that is the problem.

Specifically, I can CONNECT successfully, however when I type "exec
sp_databases ;" (or anything else that returns data) and press enter, I
get into trouble.

Originally, we were getting SqlBindCol messages in place of data; I
believe someone re-linked the libraries and restarted UD, and now we get
column headers for
DATABASE_NAME, DATABASE_SIZE, and REMARKS, followed by 21 blank rows,
followed by "21 rows selected".

Please let me know how we can troubleshoot this issue. It appears to be
that the SQL Server drivers are not working correctly, but I did not set
them up on the old server, and do not know what to do on the new one.

Regards,
David Beahm

Another vote for the mac. I use a MacBook Pro with 4Gb RAM, Leopard and
Parallels. I use GotoMeeting but from within the Windows VM. Using
Parallels in Coherence mode means that Windows apps are available as though
they were Mac apps, the drives are accessible in Finder and you have the
best of both worlds. Anything not available natively for the Mac you run
from Windows but without seeing any difference from a native Mac
application. The VM facilities (snapshot etc) in Parallels are great and
then Time Machine in Leopard gives a great interface to backups.

The transporter tool in Parallels is great too, I ran it on my old Windows
laptop, left it overnight and next day I had an exact copy of the Windows
installation available to me as virtual machine on my Mac. So long as you
get enough RAM (2Gb minimum, 4Gb preferred) there is nothing about it that
is a problem

I tried using a "G" conversion, but it didn't like the system mark in the
middle:

CRT OCONV(VAR1,"G0":@VM:"1")

I don't know why you'd want to do what you've described. Specifically,
people use @AM, @VM, and @SM so that the standard EXTRACT functions can be
used. My code would look like this:

CRT VAR1<1,1>

Which is about as clear as you can get.

2007-11-23 Thread Clifton Oliver
Yes, Bill. I've been running on a MacBook since December of last
year. I use Parallels for any Windows work I need to do. I love it. I
set up a Windows VM for each client. That may be overkill, but the
ability to snapshot the state of the entire machine, test, rollback,
test, rollback is a real productivity booster. I haven't tried
loading a VM with Linux and then putting UniVerse PE on top of that
yet. But it shouldn't be a problem. Windows XP running in VM
frequently out performs some of my colleagues running XP native,
depending on their h/w.

I don't use Skype or GoToMeeting (yet), but they do have Mac clients
for them SFTP is no problem. Remember, OS X is built on top of BSD
Unix. Being a Unix dude, I open a local terminal and use command line
at times--not that I have to. I just prefer a Road Less Pixeled for
some things.

All in all, I'm a fan. I'd be hard-pressed to switch back to Windows
as a full-time system.

I use an Apple iMac at the house running Leopard and Parallels for the VM.
I have an Ubuntu partition that I run UniVerse 10.2 PE (Server) on and a
second partition to run Windows XP (U2 Clients). Everything seems to run
fine for me. But I am not beating the machine up.

On the Apple OS side:
* I use an FTP client called Transmit that works nicely and understands my
OpenSSH keys.
* I do not use Skype, but there is a client for the Mac at
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/
* I do not use GoToMeeting so I cannot provide more insight there.

Now, at work I use a MacBook Pro running Tiger and Parallels. This machine
gets a lot of use. Memory configuration is the same and I do wish I had
gone ahead and ordered more RAM. It runs well with 2GB, but I believe it
would run better with 4GB. I use Windows XP for the U2 Clients, but connect
to our AIX server for UniVerse. I have not had any issues specifically
related to using the Apple hardware. As far as the Apple OS software that
I run, I use the Transmit package to do my file transfers (mostly SFTP) and
I use a package called Subethaedit to do coding. The biggest difficulty
was setting up the syntax highlighting on Subethaedit. All in all, I find
that very little of my time is spent on the Windows XP VM because most of
the time, I am coding. The only real heavy task that I use the U2 Clients
for is the XMLDB tool. Windows XP is quite snappy running under the VM. I
am OK using it for development, but I would not want to play video games
that way.

If you're using Windows, you can simply write to a shared Windows directory
that is
defined as the "pickup" directory to the SMTP server.

We've configured SMTP as a relay on our UDT server and just forward emails to
our
real email server. This methodology doesn't relieve your UDT server from
sending
email but does route it through your managed email server.

Re: [U2] Re: U2 Users Digest V1 #1968

2007-11-23 Thread MAJ Programming
Another great point of contention.

For over 35 years (including pre-MV of the PDP-8 era), I typed FOR I=1 TO 10
and not FOR I = 1 TO 10.

Meaning, my 'habit' (not style or standard) does not use X=1
but X=1.

I don't use spaces as separators when using the colon (contatenation)
function. Thus I use PRINT X"L#10":Y"L#10".

I do use spaces when putting multiple statements on the same line, X=1 ; Y=2
; Z=3. I know that will ruffle a few feathers as there's a large camp
condemning more than one statement on a line.

I do use spaces with CALLed sub parameter strings, aka CALL SUB(A, B, C, D,
E). In fact, I make a conscious effort to add the spaces as many programmers
before me jam punctuationed parameters in the parameter area that makes it
hard to discern, aka CALL SUB(TRK.MFT,SHP.RPT,F.FILE,
D.FILE,F.TRK.DFR,USER_ANS1,USER_ANS2,RET_VAL). When printing, especially on
non-laser printers, the commas and periods look too similar.

I add a space after the commas in any read/write commands.

Might I digress on file handling:
I hate the non-filehandle option on production programs. It's acceptable
only for single use, 'programmer's' programs.

We can get into a whole dissertation on the nomenclature for file-handles.

I believe I have the best practice for the OPEN statement. In fact I had it
published by Spectrum years ago.

Anyone who still uses OPEN "","CUSTOMER"... meaning the null dict reference
should get his head out of the sand. It's never been required, at least not
by the truly earlier MV flavors (MCD, ULT, MENTOR, R80 etc). If it was
required by Prime (spawning UV/UD), then it's not required by U2 today.

My 4 cents

Our main udt server (linux) also sends out the mail. Would not classify it as
a mail server tho - it just sends mail - we would never expect it to accept
mail and store mail boxes. The linux sendmail deamon uses very little resource
and we send thousands of mails daily with no effect on the udt server. We use
either mail or mutt to send the mails. If you do want to use a separate box you
can configure the mail to go via another machine using sendmail. The manuals
have quite good info on this.

How do I off-load the emailing functions to a separate server? We
realize the DB will be creating the correspondence but we'd like to not
bog the system by sending email locally. It would be nice to move that

Ron:

Presuming you're on Unix and using sendmail as the underlying transport
agent, you can tweak the sendmail configuration to rewrite the headers so
it appears that your email is coming from elsewhere. This doesn't address
your first concern of removing the processing from the DB server, but when
the mail goes out, your DB server name does NOT have to be in the from or
reply-to fields (amoung others) so you can limit the exposure.

Likewise you can configure sendmail on your DB server to take any incoming
mail and send it somewhere else.

Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/test_index_bd.shtml#0

If you look down the page you will see the list of certifications IBM
has available for U2, just under the Informix certifications, there are
6, 5 for UniData and UniVerse Administration and 1 for U2 Family
Application Development. The certification testing was free if you
attended one of the U2 Universities and took the tests there.

I did the exams at the recent U2U in London and I have to say that the
conversions contained in the Family Application Development test were some
of the worst examples of code I have ever seen. Obviously they're possible,
but I think I'd consider sacking any programmer that used them!!

I felt the same way with that part of the test. I have never seen a need
for some of the conversion codes described because there is usually
something less obscure and more descriptive (English like) that can be
used. Now for some programmers the formats and conversions in the test
may be used but I have worked for companies in manufacturing, education,
banking, and accounting and some of the conversions in the test I would
never and have never used.

RE: [U2] OCONV Extraction Question - Good Practice

2007-11-23 Thread Brenda Price
Oh yeah, what "Certification" ? If any exists, I haven't stumbled upon
it.

Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/test_index_bd.shtml#0

If you look down the page you will see the list of certifications IBM
has available for U2, just under the Informix certifications, there are
6, 5 for UniData and UniVerse Administration and 1 for U2 Family
Application Development. The certification testing was free if you
attended one of the U2 Universities and took the tests there.

RE: [U2] OCONV Extraction Question - Good Practice

2007-11-23 Thread Jerry Banker
IBM Certified Solutions Expert U2 Family Applications Development
(passed it twice for good measure), IBM Certified Solutions Expert U2
UniVerse V9.6 Administrator for Unix and Windows, and IBM Certified
Solutions Expert U2 UniVerse V10.1 Administrator. You can take the tests
at the U2U or the conferences free of charge. Otherwise, I believe they
are available at any time for a charge.
