[U2] International Spectrum Conference - Twitter?

Note: Correction to your twitter page! http://twitter.com/clifoliver ... Only one L in there... but you probably knew that. :) Personally I never twitter or read them. Despite the fact that Twittering is a global phenomenon (and the last book I worked on culminated with a LINQ-to-Twitter example) I think it's an amazing waste of time. However, that's what people have said about forums, blogs, and many other services until they become almost indispensible when used for good purposes. I'd say introduce a new First, twitter your fingers off, bring the MV market into the 21st century, and let us poor saps who aren't there get a taste of what we missed. RE: [U2] U2.NET question
TBH I have not tried particularly hard, but i have never been given any meaty details about u2.net. A comparison between it and mv.net would be good. I am very interested in mv.net (and u2.net for that matter) but have not (knowingly) had reason to use it just yet, one day tho ... -Original Message- From: owner-u2-us...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:owner-u2-us...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Tony G Sent: 20 March 2009 01:03 To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: RE: [U2] U2.NET question [AD], information, and an inquiry below. From: Mike Randall One thing I've noticed is that the names for the various products are very convoluted. They have U2.Net, Mv.Net, Uniobjects.Net, yada yada yada. The free tool is the .Net Data Provider. I'm using that to link U2 to the .Net apps. Mike, based on your notes in this posting: http://www.mail-archive.com/u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org/msg26408 .html I believe you're using the product described here: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-071 1kumar/ Looking for those links I found this interesting 3-part blog by someone coming at U2 from a relational perspective: http://gigamegatech.com/2008/11/25/visual-studio-and-ibm-univers e-playing-the-matchmaker/ I haven't read it yet, but from what I see I think it's a shame this guy had to beat his head against a wall to do something so simple. Let's quickly separate out the products and raise a little hell while we're at it. I hope someone will correct me if any this isn't accurate: - UniObjects: A non-.NET library providing basic connectivity for file open, read, write, and execute of server-side code. - UO.NET: A managed .NET implementation of UO, not just a wrapper, providing basically the same functions. - U2 .NET Data Provider: Library for those more familiar with relational databases. - mv.NET: Non-IBM product from BlueFinity International ([ad] sold and supported worldwide by Nebula RD) that provides three libraries: -- one which is a superset of UO.NET, -- another which is similar to the the U2 Data Provider for a relational perspective -- and another one that provides direct binding of DBMS data to visual components. As an example of how mv.NET is a superset of UO.NET, mv.NET uses UO.NET as the basic (but very capable) connectivity pipe into U2. If you just need basic functionality then as I've told a couple prospects recently, just stick with UO.NET. - U2.NET: This is an old version of mv.NET for which IBM purchased the source, limited some of the features, and then rebranded for distribution to U2 developers. They took out the cross-platform compatibility and made changes to the connection pooling capabilities. While based on mv.NET, to my knowledge there is no agreement to get the new features which have already been added to mv.NET or those planned for mv.NET future releases. I thought IBM was going to give U2.NET to everyone like UO.NET. If so, OK, less features but one package for most uses - that's probably a good deal. If they're going to charge for it as Ken says, then I guess I should put together a table that compares the features and pricing of these products. Does anyone have a good source for this data? Is there a roadmap of future enhancements for U2.NET anywhere? [U2] [UV] Config parameter for the READU
Hello, I recall reading here a while back that there is a parameter in the (possibly in the uvconfig file) that determines how long READU will wait for a lock when it is taken by someone else. RE: [U2] Does anybody have a hot backup server?
We have clients that use both Unidata and Universe. Since U2s replication strategies are completely different and not compatible we implemented something very simple. We have a basic code wrapper that goes around every read and delete that essentially make those actions transactions. This wrapper uses Quartz open source job scheduler running under Apache Tomcat to write to the subscriber(s) system using UniObjects for Java after it has read it from the Publisher system. One of our clients is doing upwards of 10k transactions per hour. Their system in never more that a few seconds behind. They use their subscriber system to for hot/warm/cold backup. For those clients using our XLr8 product line this technology is already built-in so they get the benefit right away. Nonetheless, this technology is not expensive call us for a quote. We be at Spectrum passing our information on this and other products. There is but it is horrendous because, when it times out, the program takes the ELSE clause so that it thinks it owns the lock. I have appended a copy of a posting from Charles Stephenson on this topic back in 2002 below. If you are looking for a simple timeout that effectively gives a delayed entry to the LOCKED clause, there is no such feature though you can manufacture it from other components. Martin Phillips Ladybridge Systems Ltd 17b Coldstream Lane, Hardingstone, Northampton, NN4 6DB +44-(0)1604-709200 = Cause: LOCK.WAIT param set to 0 instead of default 3600 (seconds) during UV.LOGIN Workaround: Set LOCK.WAIT to very large number. E.g.: ASSIGN 86400 TO SYSTEM(1999) (basic statement) SET.SQL LOCK.WAIT 86400 (tcl command) Summary: In Rev 8.3.3 UV introduced the LOCK.WAIT feature and set the default to 3600 (seconds). This parameter says that if a LOCKED clause is missing, after [LOCK.WAIT] seconds, then ignore the lock and proceed with the ELSE clause ! ? ! ? ! Until now, the workaround for this feature has been to turn off by setting the parameter to 0, typically via ASSIGN 0 TO SYSTEM(1999) typically from a program executed from UV.LOGIN, the routine in uv/VOC that everyone hits when they enter the universe shell. --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
RE: [U2] International Spectrum Conference - Twitter?
From: Glen Batchelor Clif, Why don't you just set up a new category in the Spectrum blog for conference happenings? It has an RSS feed built-in and anyone can check on it from the intarweb. You can post video segments, if equipment is available, and sound bytes. I think the point is that there isn't a blog or other mechanism setup, but he already twitters and almost anyone can just visit that one web page. Like I said, I don't personally like the idea of Twitter (social blogs tell you what someone had for breakfast but now twitter allows them to tell you about every bite) but it _is_ a popularly accepted phenomenon and can probably be used for non-silly purposes (like trade shows) if given the chance. I'd say if he has it, do it, and if people aren't interested, tough. Ya can't please everyone all the time. [keeping it light for a friday] Hmmm, now that I think about this, I can easily come up with an interface that will re-post Clif's twitters to a forum (no, not this one *snicker*), to a blog, into Skype chats, or even into someone's MV system. (Anyone want an Excel graph showing how often Clif tweets?) Like my tool that started my morning coffee when I booted D3, or the QM tool that turned off the outside lights after sundown, MV people may not wholly appreciate the utility of such geekiness - but this sort of thing leads to innovation. Obviously people outside of the MV market appreciate this stuff. If nothing other than to turn new profits using familiar tools, maybe MV people should be more in tune with what's possible with technology. (Yes, if anyone is interested in a U2 port for the above mentioned geektilities I'm sure we can come to an arrangement...) [U2] Select behaviour, Phantoms and Unidata 6.1
Hello, Strange one here - I have a V type dictionary item with a D4/ in attribute 3. Using this at TCL with an ECLTYPE of U I am able to do LIST FILE WITH DATE.DICT 01/01/2009 DATE.DICT SAMPLE 20 and it works as expected, listing 20 records where the date is later than that returned by DATE.DICT. If I run the same command within a phantom, i.e. precede the line above with the word PHANTOM, then it fails with a 'nothing selected' message. The exact same thing works as expected on Unidata 7.1. If I change the date in the statement to internal format then it gives the correct result running under a phantom on unidata 6.1. Wondering if anyone's seen this before? As a completely separate question (well, except I hit it again whilst debugging the above) - within the command line unidata debugger, is there a way to have it find the source code automatically? It's a pain having to 'S' it into the debugger all the time! Re: [U2] [UV] Config parameter for the READU
If the value of SYSTEM(1999) is set to zero does that mean that this featured is turned off and that the READU will wait however long it takes to get the lock or does it mean it is set to the default 3600 waiting value ? - Original Message From: Martin Phillips martinphill...@ladybridge.com To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Sent: Friday, March 20, 2009 1:01:07 PM Subject: Re: [U2] [UV] Config parameter for the READU Hi Jacques, I recall reading here a while back that there is a parameter in the (possibly in the uvconfig file) that determines how long READU will wait for a lock when it is taken by someone else. RE: [U2] International Spectrum Conference - Twitter?
As a complete BTW on this thread - the twitter api is realy simple esp if you are on *nix - just use curl e.g. curl -u username:password message text http://twitter.com/statuses/update.json So also very easy to slot into your Databasic - i use this for some activity logs for some of my Phantoms. RE: [U2] Does anybody have a hot backup server? {Unclassified}
Hi Mike, Your inquiry was brought to my attention today. Could you possibly clarify what is meant by headers are flushed when they are updated in regard to UniVerse dynamic files? Is this in reference to the information in the T30FILE structure in the UniVerse disk shared memory segment being written to the header of the file when an update would result in changing one of the dynamic file parameters stored in the header? Or does this comment refer to the updated information in the header of the file being flushed to the physical disk via a sync operation? If the former, then it is my understanding that UniVerse has always updated the header immediately when a dynamic file parameter changed and there is no specific release in which this capability was added. If the latter, the only way to force the update to be flushed to disk immediately is to have the file activated for logging with UniVerse Transaction Logging and have Checkpoint mode enabled. Perhaps I'm not understanding the question so any clarification you can provide would be appreciated. Re: [U2] International Spectrum Conference - Twitter?
My last comment on this before suggesting we now move over to the u2- community list if there are further ideas of a non-technical nature. (I found Symeon's idea of using Twitter to pass along alerts from phantoms rather clever.) I want to thank everyone who shared their comments, both on list and off. There are some other attendees who responded and are now following, so I've created a hashtag #intlspec and defined it on tagal.us. If other's tweet from the Conference and include that (including the #) in their note, anyone interested can see a multi-person commentary on twitter.com (login required) or hashtags.org (no login required). I, for one, am not going to be attempting to blog all the day's events; I don't think Twitter would work very well for that. You won't be hearing (from me, anyway) what I had for breakfast. Like others, I can't wonder why anyone would think anybody but their cardiologist would care. I have in mind observations, notes, comments, and ideas for articles for those who might want to be published. Hopefully some other attendees will join in so there is a variety of opinions and ideas. This is an experiment. Could be fun, might prove useful, may be a flop. As to a blog--I've talked with Nathan Rector and passed your comments and requests along. If anyone wants to continue a discussion of this or other social media has a place in business, let's take it over to u2-community list. Looking forward to seeing some of you at the Conference! Thanks again. Regards, Clif On Mar 20, 2009, at 12:28 PM, Tony G wrote: From: Glen Batchelor Clif, Why don't you just set up a new category in the Spectrum blog for conference happenings?
