[U2] Microdata Conversion

2009-11-03 Thread MAJ Programming
To All:

The day is finally approaching. One of my Microdata clients is now wanting to
switch to a contemporary platform.

Because of being a Microdata, I have a fork in the road: 1) Do I pursue a
system that can run in Microdata Flavor, ie Unidata or 2) do I endeavour on the
path of either programatically or manually changing the true-PQN procs to more
traditional PQ procs to end up on a D3 system.

Also, I recall one of my other clients having switched from MCD to UD before me
and there must have been a dictionary converter to go from the 10 line items to
the 7 line items. That converter put the original 10 line dict (attributed) on
line 10 of the new dict item, replacing @am with @vm's.

I would like to gather opinions from anyone who has done such a conversion as
well as from VAR's that could facilitate either the specific sale and/or the
conversion.

You may contact me directly at m.john...@jaydeetrucking.com

Thanks

It's been a long time since I did one of these, but UniData has a conversion
tool to switch DICTs. It's pretty good, but as always, you need to verify.

Re: [U2] Microdata Conversion

2009-11-03 Thread Ed Clark

Basically, the road ahead is wide open and the future is bright.
I've heard good things about Reality. They seem to be making a
comeback. That would be an easy move.

jbase has a reality emulation and was written by microdata people.
Both universe and unidata have reality/microdata flavors.

Cache has a Reality emulation, and Reality applications migrate to it
easily. I'm biased, but you should really look at Cache.

With all those options, there's no reason to consider D3 if you rely
on PQN procs. mvBase does a form of PQN proc, but I don't know how
compatable it is. From the documentation, it looks like it's all there.

2009-11-03 Thread Tony Gravagno
 From: Ed Clark
With all those options, there's no reason to consider
D3 if you rely on PQN procs.

I'll agree with all of Ed's other comments - except that one.
You can get RPL for D3, which is essentially compiled PQN. All
of your F-OPEN, F-READ, and /!/%/# buffers are there, plus more.
So D3 is as much on the table as any other platform.

I don't think anyone has mentioned QM yet, but I believe there is
strong support for PQN there as well.

One of my clients, a regular here, took several months to migrate
dicts from Pick-style A/S correlatives to Unidata. Major pain.
Of all of the platforms available, I'd think Unidata is the most
difficult for migration of a really full-featured app.

Reality probably supports Microdata better than anyone -
including full PQN support. Unless you feel compelled to move
from a Pick-based platform to a Prime-based platform with support
for Pick flavors, there's really no need to go that route.

Bottom line is that you can go anywhere you want with relative
equal pain or lack thereof. Given that technically most of the
options are equivalent, my inclination would be to go with the
strongest vendor, best product support, best options for the
future, etc.

Mark,

How tightly is spooler manipulation integrated into the application? I'm
wondering if compatibility will affect your decision. Aren't there some
significant differences amongst the various choices?

[U2] unidata err

2009-11-03 Thread Jeff Butera
Unidata 7.1.x on Windows 2003. When trying to access AE, we get the
following:

can't get to msgq in U_tosbcs

I found one limited email thread from 2005 on this, but the solution
(correcting CTLGTB VOC pointer) was already addressed.

Any ideas?

Re: [U2] unidata err

2009-11-03 Thread Wally Terhune
I don't think I've ever seen that reported on Windows.
Typically - the sbcs daemon (Shared Basic Code Server) is not running. On
Windows, literally sbcs.exe.
It could also indicate a problem with Windows memory mapped files - that we've
used to mimic UNIX shared memory as well as message queues.
AE is a globally cataloged UniBasic program.
Your udt process is trying to send a message to the sbcs daemon asking that AE
be loaded into shared memory (or confirmed to already be loaded) and then send
back the address of the object so it can be run.
'to msgq' refers to the sbcs request queue (sbcs listens on this queue for
requests from udt processes).
There is also an sbcs reply queue that udt processes listen on for responses
from sbcs.
