Re: [U2] converting D3 to UniData

2012-11-21 Thread Ross Ferris
I can share that it depends on a lot on the application.

Many years ago (now) there was an outsourced computer logistics company that
wanted to install our R5 ERP product only problem was, we used D3 but the
company had Unidata, and would NOT contemplate a change.

So, the client contracted Unidata (Australia) to undertake the conversion. They
had a look at some of the code and came up with a "quote" of "less than a week".

The week passed, and the timeframe had grown to a month. They were having
issues with some of the dictionary items we had, and they advised client it
would take another week, then a month, then 2 months, then our prospect
said "too hard".

Interestingly enough, the company DID end up installing a new ERP system
running jBase (from Citadel).

I'm sure things have progressed a lot since then, and yet .

(like I said, this was quite a few years ago, and I'm sure their
interoperability will have improved. Why, I bet any day now even Universe
conversions will be a snap ;-)

Just had feedback from Rocket Support that this issue should be addressed in
11.1.10, due November-30.

In the mean time, adjusting the NUSERS setting (as a result of reducing our
Phantom Loading%), and reducing our locking table has finally resulted in a
successful uvregen!

Thanks Colin

I would not consider those values as large. I did ask via our supplier in
Australia ( Meier Business Systems) to lodge a case with Rocket to remove the
limitation of 32MB particularly in view of our system having 512GB of main
memory. Not sure if this will get a look in the upcoming release 11.1.10.

Your current values give about 27,000 concurrent locks. Perhaps you can trim
the
width down and shorten the depth of GSEMNUM if your system doesn't need the
possibility of as many locks being set.

Would you consider the following to be a large lock table:

At UV11.1.9 the shared memory segment cannot be greater than 32 megabytes. When
I tried to set the various values for approximately 800 users and have a huge
record/group lock table I blew the limit.

Suggest you try to pare down as much as possible the lock table if it is large.

Subject: [U2] UV11.1.9 uvconfig issue

I need guidance from those who have battled (and hopefully won!) the UV11
shared memory setup.

I am configuring a RHEL6 server with UV11.1.9 to perform some load testing, and
am getting an issue with uvregen processing the uvconfig settings.

The error is:

   # uvregen
Disk shared memory size of 44759272 exceeds maximum allowed size of
33554432
uvregen: error during regen, process aborted
uvregen: error during regen, process aborted
   #

The question is:

What setting(s) in the uvconfig file (or in unix) control the "maximum
allowed size" value of 33554432 (32768k, 32mb)?

We are tuning for 1040 uv processes (with 10 device licenses per proc, and 2
connection pool licenses and possible 45% phantom process loading), so the
following uvconfig settings are in place:

   NUSERS 15083
   SHM_GNTBLS 32
   SHM_GNPAGES 480
   SHM_GPAGESZ 512

Thanks

Re: [U2] UniVerse on a Windows Virtual Server

2012-11-21 Thread Adrian Halid
Our customers have been running universe 10.3 on Windows 2008 R2 without any
issues.

On the virtualisation side we have had customers who moved to a virtual
environment and experienced a drop in the performance of universe database.

We ran our own test internally and could not get the same performance out of
the same machine virtualized compared to bare metal. In some processes on large
files the time to complete the process doubled.

I would suggest that you run some performance tests on your virtual environment
first to see if you are happy with the results and that your application runs
at an acceptable level.

Measure your processes in a virtual environment and then measure in a non
virtual. It is up to you and your customers to what an acceptable level of
performance is.

Adrian Halid

Hi Jerry:

We have been running internally Universe on Windows 2008R2 using the 32 bit
version for years. We have found that occasionally we have a run away uv
process that consumes the machine. We keep either a Process Explorer window
open or Window Task Manager to kill the run away processes, because you cannot
get them to start on the Windows VM side. We have not used 10.3 release in so
long we cannot say except it is better to be current. We have client that is
using Universe 11.3 on Windows 2008R2 and is not experiencing any issues.

Disk I/O is shared so their is a speed hit which we notice on large files.
We have just configured a replacement machine with a SSD on it. We think the
speed increase will more than offset the VM shared resource issues.

Good Luck,

[U2] UniVerse on a Windows Virtual Server

2012-11-21 Thread Jerry Banker

We have two virtual servers with UniVerse on them, one for testing and another
for development both used just for that purpose and not tuned for production.
We are thinking of going virtual with our production environment. We are using
Windows as the operating system and don't plan on switching.I've been asked to
get opinions from the users group from people that have gone into using
virtualization with their production environment. What are the pro's and
con's?Any suggestions on how to set the systems up?We have less than 75 users
with device licenses using the apps on a regular basis, plus web users. Our
current UV release is 10.3.3 32 bit on Windows 2008 sp2 64 bit, should we
switch to a more current version and/or 64 bit Universe?Any experiences would
be helpful.

Thank you,
