To be accurate we shipped around November of 2005. IBM/Rocket show a proof of concept of BDT at the September 2006. They did not ship that year. I recall them showing another proof of concept at the next show in September/October 2007 and then the finally shipped a product around August 2008. -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Symeon Breen Sent: Monday, November 15, 2010 1:05 AM To: 'U2 Users List' Subject: Re: [U2] New Client Specifics Way before ? , 6 months perhaps, a year at the most. Re eclipse - i sooo much prefer VS as a dev environ than eclipse, eclipse always seems so bloated and overly complex. If the ability to connect to and dev unibasic inside VS came out of the box i would be a very happy chap indeed. Right now, I do not know how Rocket handles this matter of Java and Eclipse with BDT. I presume that prerequisites is covered in the BDT manual from Rocket. While this Java thing can be something of a pesky hurdle, some brute force work-arounds are to back-door install OpenOffice and/or NetBeans on the PC. Is it worth all this hassle? YES... life without Eclipse is life as a troglodyte. --Bill/mailman/listinfo/u2-users I'm not impressed with Eclipse. Very heavy. Did you say you changed the port to your telnet port? This does use uniobjects, so you need the rpc port. I actually got BDT working with udt61 (with a technote on the rocket website) and some help from one of their techs. If you get an Unknown error message, make sure the account you are trying to connect to exists in the SYS account in the UD.ACCOUNTS file. Is it worth all this hassle? YES... life without Eclipse is life as a troglodyte. N. Eclipse coming to u2 is not the Second Coming. Its nice, but we have had the ability to use any editor we like for u2 code for ages. So it is with BDT... We have spoken with Rocket at U2 University. They are thinking about letting us have access to the debugger API for Eclipse. This means the XLr8Editor will be able to debug as well. And by the way, XLr8Editor works with any release of Unidata from 6.0 and Universe 10.0 and up, guaranteed. Hi All: [ad] We built into our XLr8 Eclipse based tools a system that keeps that connection open. You set the time how often you want the system to make sure the connection is open in seconds. We use open source job scheduler see: http://www.quartz-scheduler.org/ Our documentation is loaded into the help contents menu. We added a complete logging subsystem into our tool that uses open source log4j, see http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/. So, if you have any problems, you can turn up the logging for us both to look at. Bill: Do I have to load up some crap onto my client before I can run BDT? Does it use UniObjects? Would there be a problem if the timeout period for the UniRPC daemon was reduced to 5 minutes (this seemed to cause no end of grief to those using the previous incarnation of the development tool, which we could never get working properly anyway)? I have the most recent version of the UD clients software (v7.2A) and didn't see any documentation regarding either installation or use of the product. Am I missing something or is it just for UV? Re: [U2] New Client Specifics
So, I went ahead and installed the BDT from the UD clients 7.2A file. It installs a bunch of eclipse junk; which is fine, I guess. Of course, when I thought of updating (help software updates find and install) that fails miserably to update eclipse so maybe I shouldn't try that. Next, of course, I figure I could create a U2 server which would give me a connection to a UD account. How silly of me to think I could do something like that. I mean, like right-click the U2 Servers entry in the U2 Resource window, click on New U2 Server then enter a name for the server and a host (I tried both a hosts entry and an IP address). I selected UniData, clicked [Advanced], used the default info regarding RPC and added the complete path to the account where our BASIC code resides. Changed the telnet port to the proper port our UD is listening on, clicked [Finished] then tried to connect. Naturally I entered the valid Windows User ID and Password but was informed: The combination of user name and password provided is incorrect. So, I guess using the administrators name and password isn't sufficient to work my way through step one of using this tool. I guess this pretty much explains why these tools aren't always used. Naturally, if I was to think about this some more I might suspect using Windows 2008 R2 may be causing the problem, but who knows? [g]. So, I guess it's back to ignoring this environment and moving back the environment I have to dance with today. :-( Bill Bill Haskett said the following on 11/11/2010 1:12 PM: Bill: Do I have to load up some crap onto my client before I can run BDT? Re: [U2] New Client Specifics
It may be necessary to install the Java SDK/JDK for Eclipse and thus BDT to work. Of course, Oracle is now the keeper of Java downloads. A Google search for the Java SDK is of interest. When installing a fresh copy of Eclipse, Eclipse does not install the Java SDK/JDK automatically. Perhaps because I had already installed Eclipse a while ago on my PC, I had no issues installing BDT. 1. The version of the U2 server matters. If the UniData there is legacy, there could be some impassable RPC hurdles. 2. If fortunate enough to be on Rocket maintenance, consider contacting Rocket. 3. We were on UV 10.1 before and could not RPC. Migration to 10.3.6 came with some re-Cataloging pain. Was the pain worth it? At the time of pain, no. Re: [U2] New Client Specifics
I must say, I am using UD v7.2.7 on Windows 2008 R2, so this is the latest and greatest as far as UD is concerned. We're heavily using mv.NET (UO.NET) and UO through DesignBais (we do all administration through UniAdmin too). We have no problems with anything so don't know what the problem is. I think I will contact support. :-) Thanks, Bill Bill Brutzman said the following on 11/11/2010 2:52 PM: 1. The version of the U2 server matters. We are an SB shop, and BDT is not aware of and SB objects, so meh. ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users
