To be accurate we shipped around November of 2005. IBM/Rocket show a proof
of concept of BDT at the September 2006. They did not ship that year. I
recall them showing another proof of concept at the next show in
September/October 2007 and then the finally shipped a product around August
2008.

Perhaps because I had already installed Eclipse a while ago on my PC, I
had no issues installing BDT.

Right now, I do not know how Rocket handles this matter of Java and
Eclipse with BDT. I presume that prerequisites is covered in the BDT manual

While this Java thing can be something of a pesky hurdle, some brute force
work-arounds are to back-door install OpenOffice and/or NetBeans on the PC.

Is it worth all this hassle? YES... life without Eclipse is life as a

I'm not impressed with Eclipse. Very heavy.

Did you say you changed the port to your telnet port? This does use
uniobjects, so you need the rpc port. I actually got BDT working with
udt61 (with a technote on the rocket website) and some help from one of
their techs. If you get an Unknown error message, make sure the
account you are trying to connect to exists in the SYS account in the
UD.ACCOUNTS file.

N. Eclipse coming to u2 is not the Second Coming. Its nice, but
we have had the ability to use any editor we like for u2 code for ages.
Granted, the dictionary view is nice. We are an SB shop, and BDT is not
aware of and SB objects, so meh.

So, I went ahead and installed the BDT from the UD clients 7.2A file.
It installs a bunch of eclipse junk; which is fine, I guess. Of course,
when I thought of updating (help software updates find and
install) that fails miserably to update eclipse so maybe I shouldn't try
that.

Next, of course, I figure I could create a U2 server which would give me a
connection to a UD account. How silly of me to think I could do something
like that. I mean, like right-click the U2 Servers entry in the U2
Resource window, click on New U2 Server then enter a name for the server
and a host (I tried both a hosts entry and an IP address).
I selected UniData, clicked [Advanced], used the default info regarding RPC
and added the complete path to the account where our BASIC code resides.
Changed the telnet port to the proper port our UD is listening on, clicked
[Finished] then tried to connect. Naturally I entered the valid Windows
User ID and Password but was informed: The combination of user name and
password provided is incorrect. So, I guess using the administrators name
and password isn't sufficient to work my way through step one of using this
tool. I guess this pretty much explains why these tools aren't always used.

Naturally, if I was to think about this some more I might suspect using
Windows 2008 R2 may be causing the problem, but who knows?
[g]. So, I guess it's back to ignoring this environment and
moving back the environment I have to dance with today. :-(

Hi All:

[ad]
We built into our XLr8 Eclipse based tools a system that keeps that
connection open. You set the time how often you want the system to make
sure the connection is open in seconds. We use open source job scheduler
see: http://www.quartz-scheduler.org/

Our documentation is loaded into the help contents menu. We added a
complete logging subsystem into our tool that uses open source log4j, see
http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/. So, if you have any problems, you can
turn up the logging for us both to look at.

1. It bothered me when launching clients, especially Dynamic Connect, that it
splashed IBM. End-users here already have enough confusion.
2. I had problems before with the UCI Client on a Windows 7 PC connecting to
our recently upgraded v10.3.6 UniVerse. The new client works.
3. The BDT (Basic Developer ToolKit) is a game changer.

Going from a traditional editor (like EditPlus) to BDT is like going from a
propeller-plane to a jet.

Because I had some connectivity problems with UV 10.1, before I could not get
BDT to work. Now with UV 10.3.6, BDT works.

For working code that I have imported into BDT, some lines show up with warning
flags. Undefined variables get highlighted. I can right-click to compile and
catalog.

In the end, code has fewer errors, debugged faster, compiled faster,
accomplished faster.

Re: [U2] New Client Specifics

2010-11-11 Thread Bill Haskett
So, I went ahead and installed the BDT from the UD clients 7.2A file.
It installs a bunch of eclipse junk; which is fine, I guess. Of course,
when I thought of updating (help software updates find and
install) that fails miserably to update eclipse so maybe I shouldn't try
that.

Next, of course, I figure I could create a U2 server which would give me
a connection to a UD account. How silly of me to think I could do
something like that. I mean, like right-click the U2 Servers entry in
the U2 Resource window, click on New U2 Server then enter a name for
the server and a host (I tried both a hosts entry and an IP address).
I selected UniData, clicked [Advanced], used the default info regarding
RPC and added the complete path to the account where our BASIC code
resides. Changed the telnet port to the proper port our UD is listening
on, clicked [Finished] then tried to connect. Naturally I entered the
valid Windows User ID and Password but was informed: The combination of
user name and password provided is incorrect. So, I guess using the
administrators name and password isn't sufficient to work my way through
step one of using this tool. I guess this pretty much explains why
these tools aren't always used.

Naturally, if I was to think about this some more I might suspect using
Windows 2008 R2 may be causing the problem, but who knows?
[g]. So, I guess it's back to ignoring this environment and
moving back the environment I have to dance with today. :-(

It may be necessary to install the Java SDK/JDK for Eclipse and thus BDT to

Right now, I do not know how Rocket handles this matter of Java and Eclipse

While this Java thing can be something of a pesky hurdle, some brute force
