You got that right. The U.S. Postal Service managers get orgasmic just thinking about it. Why, if bulk E-mail were taxed, they might even lower the price of a stamp. Nah, no way! You can change the default distribution header and remove the "Sender:" line, since it is not required by the RFC for proper mail transfer. This will eliminate possible harvesting. You can also mangle the $sender variable to make it spam-proof. hi wendy , just because they don't , doesn't mean they shouldn't. personally, i don't subscribe to lists in order to be contacted directly. if that is ever required just munge your address in a posting so a user could figure it out but which would stop any auto harvesting. gerry - Original Message - From: "Wendy Smoak" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 12:02 pm Subject: RE: [U2] spammed > Gerry wrote: > > all i can say is , well - no. you are being very naive on > > this subject. > > don't blame this on replies to the list. > > you post your address yourself everytime you post to this > > list just like the > > one i am replying to - take a look at the From: header. > > this is where the replying mail reader gets its info from, > > this is also where spammers get their info from > > That's where anyone who wants to talk with you privately would get it, > as well. RE: [U2] spammed
It's illegal to send UBE (unsolicited bulk e-mail) here in the states, but that doesn't stop people from finding loopholes in the FCC regs or spoofing source addresses and IPs. If the post office didn't track where mail came from/went, you could put any return address on an envelope and no one would ever know it wasn't accurate. Heck, you might still be able to do that in some cities. Spamming has become a science of high marketing and sneaky technology all in itself. Your e-mail address only needs to be in one spot, on one scannable e-mail/web page/Usenet post/forum posting, to become shared with millions of marketing databases around the world. After using my e-mail address to sign up for a (opt-out only, as I finally found out) software tool, I began getting hundreds of spam e-mails a day. I won't name the source or time it happened. I had to change my address. Everytime you carelessly use your e-mail address, your exposure to the 'spam net' is increased and reaffirmed. Sometimes, you don't have a choice but to give in to get something you really want. Then, you should use a disposable address or forwarding alias. If you can trace the spam to a specific source that does not have a publicly posted opt-in/opt-out disclaimer and/or a publicly posted privacy policy(say that 3 times real fast..LOL), you could easily win damages in a U.S. court. Unfortunately, with the insecurity of e-mail and the inherent lack of validation on spam e-mail servers' part, any smart spammer can make it impossible to determine where the e-mail came from. Or worst, make it look as though another company sent it. We get complaints about that daily and there is *nothing* we can do about that, except try to make the victim understand. That pisses me off the most. There are *way too many* 'loose' e-mail servers on our backbones. All that's required to cut spam in at least half, is for all relaying e-mail servers to perform a reverse DNS lookup on the from e-mail address. It can be compared with the IP of the host sending it, before the e-mail relayed. I'll take spam in my inbox all day long, over having our company name slandered by some shmuck sending viruses and spam(which is illegal - yet it can't be proven). How many people are really going to spend $ and time to correctly identify and take a company or organization to court over spam? It's a catch 22. We won't fight it legally, yet we bitch about it constantly and point fingers at our service providers. Even with their spending and effort, the war is still far from over. The only real way to win, is to stop using e-mail. I'll step of the spam box now.. www.mailinator.com can also be used for a quick temp account to signup for stuff that may just be junk. You don't need a password so security is non-existent, but you don't have to setup an address ahead of time. I don't remember how long it keeps the information and you can't send stuff out from the site. It just receives stuff in and you don't have to worry about someone using the address you provided to spam you. But it is a valid email address for receipts. Hi Tony , all i can say is , well - no. you are being very naive on this subject. don't blame this on replies to the list. you post your address yourself everytime you post to this list just like the one i am replying to - take a look at the From: header. this is where the replying mail reader gets its info from, this is also where spammers get their info from - they do not wait to harvest from replies. imo , all mail sent from this list to subscribers should have no other address than the list address itself. the 'friendly' name in the address can be set to reflect the poster's friendly name, but that has nothing to do with the originating email address. real address or not , the same problem still exists as long as the list sends out the originators email address with every post. I control my own mail server and can generate as many different email addresses as I want, just like the unique address i use for this list. but what good does it do now that the list has been infected ? i can drop that address and start using a new one which means I have to unsubscribe & resubscribe to the list, but since the list is infected, the very next post will simply get the new address right back on the spammer list again !! gerry - Original Message - From: "Tony Gravagno" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 03:05 am Subject: RE: [U2] spammed > gerry wrote: > > > imo - the solution to this problem is simple - the posters email > > address should not be included in the distributed postings. > > i know the list address , the list address knows my address and > > nobody else knows anything. > > > > > From: "Glen B" > >> Something else to consider, is the presence of your e-mail in > >> cross-posting on lists/newsgroups and web forums. Re: [U2] spammed
Hi Larry , it didn't come from your server. but it did get sent to an address is not and has never been used for anything by the U2 list. see Allen's repsonse for 2nd confirmation. it never occurred to me to look - I assumed that originating email addresses were not included in posts distributed from this list , but on closer look it is - that's a shame. gerry - Original Message - From: "Larry Hiscock" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, September 20, 2004 12:17 pm Subject: RE: [U2] spammed > The list server strips attachments, and may determine, based on the filetype > among other things, that it was a virus. RE: [U2] spammed
All it takes is for a bot to sign up for the list and begin harvesting. Without any decent bot-stops in place, everyone on the list is on a harvester buffet bar. If the only authorization required, is a 'reply' to the authorization response, then most harvesters can join without anyone realizing it. That is why our(All-Spec) commercial mailing list registration requires you to read an authorization code from the response e-mail and type it into a web form. Then, a human has to interpret a skewed/pixilated GIF and type in the visualized code into a separate web form. That stops most harvesters. Something else to consider, is the presence of your e-mail in cross-posting on lists/newsgroups and web forums. Spiders can pull e-mail addresses from just about anything now-a-days. RE: [U2] spammed
considering I have numerous traps prior to my inbox...(cut it out!) I never received any along this line. This is aside from the fact tht I generally delete mail with funky headers/subject lines that my isp neglects to weed out -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of gerry Sent: Monday, September 20, 2004 11:13 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [U2] spammed i just received a viral mail delivery notification notice sent to my email address that is used solely for the u2 list and absolutely nothing else. anyone else get this ? gerry --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/ --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
RE: [U2] spammed
The list server strips attachments, and may determine, based on the filetype among other things, that it was a virus. When it does so, it returns a notification to the sender. If you forward a copy of the notification directly to me at larryh[at]wcs-corp.com I can determine if it was indeed sent from our server.
