Pascal,

I will not be able to attend the meeting this weekend, but let me
contribute some food for thought.

The art-list until now has been a place where people tossed out ideas
and art they have done. This is fine, but if the goal is to get art
into Universe so that it can be considered for inclusion into main,
maybe there should be a discussion as to what the decision makers want
to see.

It is much easier to hit the target when you can see the target.
Blindly shooting arrows into the sky may result in a direct hit, but
it's not likely. I'm still using Breezy and Hoary, so I can't see what
graphical elements have been proposed for Dapper and therefore can't
make direct suggestions, but here is what might be asked and therefore
decided upon:

 - what colors should be used?
  - is there a theme that should underlie the artwork? (for example,
when RH released blue curve, there was a definite theme and coherency
to the artwork)
 - what are our greatest needs?
 - the difference between a slick, polished, enterprise grade
application and something that looks like it was hobbled together is
the attention to detail. Therefore, identify areas of the interface
that look 'fine' or 'not bad' but don't have the professional 'shine'
that we want to be represented in the Linux community for the next 5
years (the expected support life span of dapper).

Dapper is going to be around a while, and if anyone on the art-list
wants to be relevant to the upcoming project, they need to think
long-term when they think about this release.

Five years from now there will be people saying, "Well... it's about
time we upgrade those old Dapper computers..." Their thoughts about
the look and feel could be one of the following:
 - "Remember when these came out? They really set the bar for the next
few generations of desktops."
or
 - "Wow, can you believe someone thought this looked good?"

This weekend's meeting can decide what people will be saying when that
day comes.

I think we should pick out three (or pick any number) basic ideas, and
base a theme on each one. Each theme-idea should be targeted at a
specific audience. Of the top of my head, base ideas could be:

I) Stylish, glossy.
II) Flat, simple, fast.
III) Flashy, colorful, cartoonish (gartoon iconset anyone :D)

I suggest these "Minimum Theme Requirements":

 - GTK theme (GT)
 - Metacity theme (MT)
 - Icon theme (IT)

- GT must go well with Firefox
- IT must contain Evolution stock icons

- Generally have an Ubuntu feel to it

Optional theme properties:

 - Other application stock icons. Fx. Gaim emoticons.
 - A suggested wallpaper
 - Various splashes

The reason why I include the last Evo point is that the theme should
really change the entire desktop. A theme should really change the feel
of the *entire* desktop. Half-***ed themes are only so much fun.

Cheers,
Mikkel

Is there a package with the icons released? A tar or something? I'd really

With the UI sprint taking place next week in London, we would very much
like to have the best current work in place in Dapper when that begins.
So, those of you who have icons, desktops, themese etc which are on
your hard drives ready to go but not uploaded, please work with the
developers this week to get them in and looking as good as possible
before Monday.

Thanks!

These are awesome ideas. A tango package with a Tango splash, wallpaper
(s), icon theme, Firefox theme, Thunderbird theme, GTK and Metacity
them would be awesome. This is what we are looking at for each and
could easily be added. Given they would be added essentially
immediately to the universe repositories we could even allocate a
maintainer of each set/package. For example the Tango package would
need to be updated every few months after considerable updates of new
icons.

There are many other items you've listed there and I could see almost
every single one as a set. Exciting stuff! :)

[ubuntu-art] Artwork Weekend

2006-03-02 Thread Pascal Klein
Ahoy all,

This weekend, coinciding with the Ubuntu UI sprint happening in London,
might as well be a nice time to catch up, get some decisions and work
done, so I suppose let us dub it the 'Artwork Weekend'. This has several
implications, especially meeting wise. Please note (!) there is no set
discussion time set for this. Come and go to the artwork IRC channel
(#ubuntu-artwork) and catch up with what is happening, show the work
you've worked on and overall, help cover the agenda items.

So, the relevant information for this weekend is:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/Meetings -- Timing, about the meeting
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/Meetings/Agenda -- The agenda
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/ArtworkWeekend -- Note the discussions

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/Voting -- For any voting purposes.

Please keep the results on the page so others can keep track of it.

Cheers to all who've already put in ideas thus far. I look forward to
discussing them in detail. :)

Cheers,

Pascal

PS. To the Fridge folks: chance this could be added as an event into the
calendar? :)

For this then I'd recommend Tango or Andy's Etiquette set. Tango maybe
somewhat large, so Etiquette would be an ideal choice.

[ubuntu-art] Themes for polishing

2006-03-02 Thread Who
Hi, and hello list!I thought, given what Mark has said recently about getting some high quality, polished themes into the repositories soon, that we ought to get straight to discussing which themes will be 'operated on'.
Can I confirm what we mean by theme: is it icons+Metacity+GTK theme, or is it just a GTK ThemeI have the following ideas.1. We have at least one 'unifying theme' - containing icons for KDE and for GNOME that are very similar/identical, that by default co-ordinates colours and sets QTandGTK to use themes that look as similar as possible
My personal proposals for these are eitherIcons:*Tango (http://tango-project.org/)*NuovEXT (http://nuovext.pwsp.net/)
Both of these also have Firefox themes. Can we apply Firefox themes using a .deb? Theme*Industrial and some work using the Suse-released qindustrial - this is very hard to get hold of and would be a real coup f we could get it polished for Dapper - may people think Industrial is the best theme for Gnome - so it would be great to allow them to integrate KDE apps(
http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/professional/qindustrial.html and
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=22913). Are there issues with being 'polite' to Novel and Jakub?*Plastik themed to look like Clearlooks and Clearlooks looking like Plastik*Mandrake Galaxy - I will post some screenshots somewhere of how good this can look with the right colours - and it is identical on KDE/Gnome. How can we get/build the theme engine for Ubuntu?
2.We discuss which will be our top three for _one week_ (so submissions end on 9th March 06), and after that week make a decision and start developing. If anyone feels that their pet theme isn't among the ones we decide on then they can lead a team to do that. Ideally we shouldn't do this though, because it will reduce the efficiency of the other teams (by distracting potential contributors). Can we use
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/Voting for voting, or the forums (see below)?3. Each group can do what they want after this date, but I think it would be useful if we could make user-viewable specs about what we are doing in the Wiki - so forum users etc can have their say. this will also help artists who aren't from the group to contribute work - if the spec on the wiki is clear then what we want/need will be obvious.
4.All suggestions should be accompanied by links, so that we don't all duplicate our time googling for information about a particular theme/iconset.5. (I'm not sure about this) We check back for a review in 4 weeks from now

Right. There is definitely room for giving feedback on that selection as
well. I've asked for input and have gotten some, but basically I have
simply selected the ones I though were best. If anyone has strong
feelings about that; either items that should be taken out or added then
this is a good time to suggest it (here or in the wiki).

We could also add an icon set to the example-content, esp. an SVG one
which won't require much space, because an icon set can be added very
easily via drag and drop. We would then use this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperExampleContent/ReadMe to explain how to do
that installation (that will be an HTML page on the CD).

Feedback and corrections are also welcome on that readme page as well as
any of the content within the example-content package:
http://people.ubuntu.com/~henrik/examplecontent/dapper/current/ There
are for example some OpenOffice docs in there that could still do with
some love. Specifically:

* We need an OpenOffice Draw file - something nice and Ubuntu related :)
* The impress file is based on 'Great Features of Ubuntu' but could do
with updating and eye-candy love
* We need a Calc sheet with some boring numbers that are shown as
dazzling plots and charts
* The Writer Document is now decent IMO, but could also be improved by
someone with an eye for design I'm sure.

So those are some concrete tasks that could do with some help :)

We can get them into universe almost immediately, then they are
available for wider spread testing. In the long term, we should have
one in main (best, high quality, complete ones) and one in universe
(broader selection of new ones under development).

We could also do with discussing a new art team leader as
well as people interested in these themed art packages, leading their
production and working with other interested souls. :)

So, an art team meeting. How does this weekend sound?

Sounds good.

Our UI sprint is next week. We will be making lots of notes on the wiki
and putting up samples / examples / icons etc. This stuff is moving
very fast, we will do our best to provide you guys with a daily summary
of what's happening.

Finally, I'd like to offer an apology. I was meaning to get started on
these themes earlier than this point. Hasn't happened, due to several

Accepted. And thanks for the offer of rising to the challenge, you are

Stick it on your own doorstep, then.

The art team needs leadership and organisation. This is our fourth

emerge organically. In Dunedin, you and I discussed this, and you

"Processes" don't move forward. People make them move forward. It takes

Rather than looking for a place to put blame because things have not
happened exactly the way you want it to, you might consider actually making
them happen.

I'm being blunt. Very. I really want a strong community art team but I
absolutely know it will not happen unless someone steps up to lead and
organise that team. Until that point, we will have lots of missed
opportunities. The door is open for anybody with savvy, energy, and
leadership to step through.

I think in more correct terms, I meant to say I would have
liked a call for this sort of a job and it pushed (ie. "Hey Dapper
really needs an icon set"). Andy Fitzsimon's was definitely on the
right track, personally.

That call went out two releases ago. We've provided funding to Andy,
over the course of a long time, and Andy has made good progress.
However, we thought it worth trying a different angle, and I'm pleased
with the results. There is room for Etiquette in Ubuntu as well, and
perhaps one day it can become the default.

Andy cant work alone. If that's to be a community effort, again, it
will take leadership to gather a team around him.

The folder icons for NFS, SMB, SSH and icons of that nature, the
rounded rectangular background for the text seems too similar in colour
to the folder which make it hard to distinguish from the rest of the
icon, especially the folder part. :)

OK, good feedback that.

Yes, those theme packages are definitely on the checklist. I am hoping
to try to allocate a theme to a group of people, so for example 2 or 3
people could work on one theme while another group works on another
theme. How does this sound?

Sounds excellent.

It would be great if there was a single package that could be installed
which had 5 community-contributed theme candidates. We can then review
them, provide feedback, and ultimately select a very few of the best
ones, if they are high quality and complete, for inclusion in the
distribution release.

Cheers to Mark's input in this regard. Dapper is less than 2 and a half
months away so I think I'll comply to some of those wishes presented in
Mark's recent email. Need to get stuff done. Done well, and
presented well.

Hello, list!

I'm not a member of the art team, I just subscribed to some lists.
I just wanted to say that Dapper is less than ONE month and a half away, not
TWO months and a half.

[ubuntu-art] Getting this act together

Mark's recent email. Need to get stuff done. Done well, and

The art team is still without a team leader, given the medical treatment Aaron
had to undergo. I would like to recommend an art team meeting within
the week, as soon as possible to sort out some stuff. Forget the wiki
and the other issues that were discussed repeatedly earlier on and
let's focus on the few themed-packages that the art team could produce
and possibly, given they are good, make their way into universe or
mainstream. We could also do with discussing a new art team leader as
well as people interested in these themed art packages, leading their
production and working with other interested souls. :)

So, an art team meeting. How does this weekend sound?

Finally, I'd like to offer an apology. I was meaning to get started on
these themes earlier than this point. Hasn't happened, due to several
things, namely college and a few other things. Cheers.

Kind regards,
Pascal

Sorry if I was somewhat blunt. I feel that the process isn't moving
along as fast as I would like it to and I'm trying to stick a blame to
something. I think in more correct terms, I meant to say I would have

I agree 100%. You need guidelines to be able to work efficiently. We
don't even know what will be the color scheme of ubuntu. This would be
important to learn because color is a unifying motif in the overall
visual impact, and the login screen, splash, wallpapers and so on
should reflect this. Also the size. Will the splash, for instance, be
the same size as in Breezy? I hope someone will set up a list of
parameters quickly so that we can start creating actual artworks
because not that much time has left until April.
