I rmr cimi mentioning that current murrine-svn would be ready for release
sometime in middle of August. If that is the case, we can try and use it.

I'm using pixmaps to see how good it is for general use. It is far more
complicated to this with an engine (esp. if you have to implement it
yourself). I don't know about the performance but the looks of
clearlooks is better to me. That is why we have to theme: newwave-theme
and newwave-theme-murrine.

Valentin if you want to help New Wave you are welcomed to join the theme

Please don't be demotivated by this. It is actually not that hard to tweak
existing theme engines (the hard thing is to write them, there are many many
devils in the details). As I've stated a few times already having a clear
list of simple items we would like fixed will make it much more likely that
someone with the skills and motivation will write a patch suited for
upstream (possibly me, but no promises ;-P).

The stuff that is much harder to change is the subtle user interaction
things. Like being able to drag windows by mouse-dragging on unused parts of
the menubars. See fx http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=500437 which
is relevant for New Wave.

Cheers,
Mikkel

I think we must try to make a theme with murrine or clearlooks (or
hybrid?). We have to think back to something feasible with clearlooks or
murrine. We can consider murrine-svn but I don't know if it can allow
the proposal of Francois and if the day of murrine release is compatible
with Ubuntu Intrepid Timeline.

We can try to do something similar to what Francois proposed with
clearlooks or murrine. Maybe with murinne we can make a more similar
effect.

Certainly is not good idea to use pixmap-engine.

Ok, I can make some. Could you make the font white on the pressed buton
instead of bold?

I guess Giuseppe is right about the pixmap engine and that's really a pity.
If we cannot make an interface look exactly like an initial mockup, and if
we always have to give up such or such thing, it becomes basically
impossible to make something that looks really new in Gnome.

Yes, I know it.
But I think that used pixmap is a bad idea and not best way to make a
theme, especially if we would hope to use it as default in Ubuntu.
The pixmap engine is slow e not performing. The pixmap engine might be
used only for little workaround and I think it is already used enough in
NewWave. Increase the use of pixmap engine is not good idea.

It is possible to make this with the pixmap engine. Here are the
results:

http://img164.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=36311_Buttons_122_688lo.jpg

Unfortunately there are some weak points of this not being part of the
engine:
1. I cannot set the default button image (the one that is pressed upon
Enter)
2. If we change the buttons we have to change the radiobuttons and
checks as well. See in firefox.
3. A dotted rectangle appears on focused buttons.

If anybody knows how can we fix 1 and 3 he is welcomed to help us.

that looks quite ok to me. however i am left wondering where the light
is coming from, the light that produces this highlights..

overall there seems to be some inconsistency forming between the buttons
and the title-bar. if the buttons get a high-light then why not the base
of the titlebar? why not the base of the panel also? how 'thick' are
the buttons compared to the titlebar such that they receive light from
below and the titlebar doesn't?

the moment you start representing the casting of light you start
implying corporeal objects. for this reason it's much easier to produce
inconsistent results the more vectors of light you introduce in your
scene.

Uploaded.
I applied another change about consistency in taskbar.
Changed color bg[PRELIGHT] of panel with the same color as item selected

I mean, does the entire png image have to be 74x26 or only the button
(without the shadow - in that case the shadow is out of 74x26).

There is a shadow behind all the buttons except the pressed one. Should they
be included in the png or there is a way of putting them in the theme?

Excellent but can you give me clear png files (without text on them) so
that I can make a preview in the theme. The size is 74x26 px.

First of all: I like that very much!

Just had the following idea: what about removing the outer orange line
of INACTIVE windows - this would extremely highlight the active ones and
make the desktop more clear.

Also I am not sure about these lines at the panels. Maybe they are a
little bit too stylish instead of functional?

The restart icon is not as good as I wanted. If you include them please
leave it aside.

The icons are good but I think they stand a little bit unfinished. Try
to use outline wit some matching color (not black) so that the user can
better visually see where the icon ends.

When you are done upload the changes ;)

Those icons are just great! And it's a new style; No glossiness and no
