Re: [ubuntu-art] Work Theme
Hello and welcome on the list, Feel free to show us your work, to design a specification for your "work" theme idea, and even to work on it. Having a visually neutral is, I agree, something extremely important. In fact, most of Ubuntu installs I see just stay with the default theme, because not everyone tweaks his PC a lot. That's why we also need the default theme to be "forgetable", while still clearly representing Ubuntu, and, obviously, not ugly :) That's a challenge for sure, but actual good themes are not the fancy and glossy ones, but often, the well-thought and polished ones. I'm looking forward to see what you have worked on and what you will work on, Alex. [ubuntu-art] Work Theme
There is a certain cancerous thinking that goes into designing a default theme for an OS/distro. I've been working on various possible defaults for Ubuntu for almost a year now, and many of them were very pleasant to work with; but I've come to realise that while the palette (brown, yellow, orange) is important in terms of branding, it is largely irrelevant in terms of actual usage. I am not speaking of the sort of user who, like myself, relishes to customize his virtual desktop environment. I have in mind the folks who use computers in a professional environment. Most places I've worked at (Caveat emptor: none of them were IT-centric) relied on PCs with Windows XP. The default XP theme is decidedly gaudy and, in my limited experience, the tendency was to switch to the stark Windows 2000 look. It's not an impressive theme, by any means, but it is unobtrusive and it gets the job done and, more importantly, allows the user to ignore it. Assuming a similar market for Ubuntu--and I am sure a professional market exists, even if limited--I think there may be a need for a theme to counterpoint the default. Something grey, dull, perhaps with a pinch of blue or possibly not; something that gets out of your way. I understand that this list was created to assist in the brand image of Ubuntu. I was just wondering if there may also be a need for a "work" theme; something that simply does not draw attention to itself. Alex P.S. From the tone of this e-mail, you may be able to tell that I've been working on themes along such lines. I was wondering if they would be an acceptable contribution to the list and to the wiki. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
Re: [ubuntu-art] SVG icons and default colour scheme
You can use a CSS (Style sheet) with SVG, then you just need to change the CSS and all files that refer to it will get the change. But there is a few gotchas, see my post "The Zen of Color", in particular the need to protect some "semantic color" from changes. The CSS can be changed via scripted transforms to the color harmony relationships but this may require changes to gnome, or some form of script to run when a given theme is installed and selected as active. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

[ubuntu-art] SVG icons and default colour scheme
I was browsing the icons for Breathe and something occurred to me, is it possible to create SVGs with scripts in them? i.e. is the SVG engine complete enough that adding some scripting, or adding a scripting engine would be trivial? The main reason I'm curious about this is that we could possibly define SVGs with a default colour, then if the colour is different in the system then we could change the colour - for instance, in the current BreatheIconSet submissions, devices/computer has an orange background on the screen. It looks great, and fits excellently with an orange based theme, but what about a theme that is blue-colour based? Wouldn't it be cool if we could just say "make this colour match (such and such) colour defined in appearance settings"? I suppose for colours, we wouldn't really need scripting but if we had scripting in SVG it would open up an entire world of possibilities. If this is well received I will put forth this suggestion on brainstorm, if it isn't already. :) Thanks, ~Chris -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

[ubuntu-art] Wiki moves, Incoming/Concepts
Hi! With Kenneth's blessing, I removed the link to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specifications so that page is hidden now. Should we ever have specifications with blueprints on Launchpad that are artwork related and of interest to this community, we still have that page and all the text at hand. Deleted Specifications/Powder, as it was practically empty and no longer findable there. I hope to see a real Powder in Incoming/Karmic (or Incoming). Moved WarningThemes to the new Incoming/Concepts. Same for Incoming/Karmic/UserInteraction, which is now Incoming/Concepts/Panels_and_Bars. So all concepts that would require (noteworthy) changes to the software stack (X, GTK, Gnome, WM ...) should go there. If someone comes up with a better, still short name than the terrible generic "Concepts", I'm all ears. -- Thorsten Wilms thorwil's design for free software: http://thorwil.wordpress.com/ -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

To do good job of adding illustrations would require to develop a consistent style and some rule on where to add images and where not. Regarding the attached image: It is not a logo, it's a collection of ... things. Repeating Ubuntu is likely not a good idea, but if it is done, the proper logotype should be used and not a generic and entirely unfitting font.
