how about some tool that integrates deeply with content from a website
but just sits as an additional piece in the wallpaper selector of the
desktop ...

for example:

the content of the scrolling window in the wallpaper selection dialog is
split in two halves (just add two headlines to the area), the top has
all local wallpapers, if you scroll down there is a section "online
wallpapers" that shows thumbnails of online wallapapers from i.e.
"wallpapers.ubuntu.com" where the top (50/100) community selected
wallpapers for a release live.

if you select a wallpaper from the bottom part it automatically moves to
the top category (gets downloaded) and is your selected background pic.

that way you can have endless amounts of wallpapers without being
restricted to CD size...

the ltsp display manager ...
you could probably say, a very cut down ssh gui login manager :)

since its so cut down, there is currently only a wallpaper and a logo
(and indeed a gtkrc to define the colors and gtk theme for the gtk
elements used) that needs to be added.

in former releases we just tried to mimic the gdm ubuntu and xubuntu
themes as well as the kdm theme for kubuntu users by simply taking the
wallapapers of the respective display managers and put the distro logo
on top ...

edubuntu in in desktop installs and localy on servers uses gdm.
in ltsp on edubuntu thin clients we use a specific display manager
(called LDM) that needs some special treatment and has limited theming

well, we already have three ;)

there is "default" , "young" (which is the same as default with a more
kid oriented wallpaper) and "plain" (which uses the same metacity and
gtk theme, no wallpaper a all (plain color) and the tango brown iconset)

note that edubuntu ships for certain target userbases and we made a
commitment in dapper to have at least one theme for each of them (even
though its always only variations of the existing default elements with
only one or two pieces changed)

our typical userbase are:

schools -> default
parents that set up edubuntu for very young kids at home -> young
and highschools (i'd love to say universities here, but we'll still need
to grow a bit before i could claim that ;) -> plain

it would be nice if we could keep the principle of changing minimal bits
in the default theme to achieve three different looks ;)

xgl is unlikely to ever become production ready, but xorg 7.1 includes
aixgl by default and since edgy will have 7.1 you will likely have a

Erlandsen:

just to outline this overkill a bit, changing the gfxboot image means
that the distro team has to do regression testing with *all* iso images
and *all* install variants, a usual kubuntu, or ubuntu install takes
30-45min, a server install 15-30min, an edubuntu install 1-1.5h.
all flavors have a desktop and an alternate CD the alternate CD has
various install flavors that all need to be tested separately, all are
shipped for at least 3 architectures.

only for the ubuntu CD that means 18 install variants for 3
architectures, which makes 54 installs for only ubuntu. 16 variants for
3 architectures for kubuntu, which makes 48 installs for kubuntu.
3 variants for 4 architectures for ubuntu server (12 installs).
15 variants for edubuntu on 3 arches (45 installs)

that makes a total of 159 test installs (and note not every developer
has all 3 arches available). so if we assume an average of 1h per
install, changing the gfxboot and usplash screen would burn about 160
manhours which we lose from the time we have for edgy development.

that might show why point release CDs are not a good idea unless you
have developers that sit around twiddling thumbs all day ;)

we'd do that for very serious bugs indeed ... but they'd have to be
serious enough to justify such an effort.

the boot texts come directly from the initscripts of the packages, in
case you want to translate them, you will need to touch some 100
packages that have an initscript and make them transalatable.
i think the approach to show no text at all is a bit easier to achieve
for edgy, adding translatability here will likely take more than one
release unless we get a big bump in developer power :)

note that we usually write a spec for such stuff in advance for the

well written and understandable spec which set of themes get included
and how they get included and getting that signed off for implementation
should give the art team the power you're referring to.

hi all,

i'm looking for a cool background for the new xscreensaver unlock dialog
in breezy. the pic needs to be a xpm, indexed to 90 colors with 350
pixel width and 274 pixel height.

if someone has a nice idea for a cool background, just send it to me ;)

i personally would prefer something like art.gnome.org uses since the
interface is easier and even my mother would find what she looks for
there, imho gnome-look.org and kde-look.org have usabilty issues, but
since is a team effort here, we should get input and a sane discussion
from the people who use it and make a decision based on this...
(putting the list on CC)

a linode server will fit our needs completely (4 GiB might be a bit
small regarding that there will be a lot of bitmaps in the end, but if
we can upgrade easily i would suggest to take this for a start).

what is the rationale for a fragmentation from the rest of the ubuntu
community ?
