That actually looks like it would be more confusing, not less. I can
imagine many new people would ask where the menu bar is. In addition,
the text beside icons is a waste of space, and I for one keep a lot of
files in my home directory, not to mention that in Netbook Remix
screen space is a major factor. I do not like the idea of a background
in the file window either, it would be distracting, IMO, competing for
attention from the desktop. The only thing I actually agree with is
the zoom bar placement, but that is because it is in my past Nautilus
mockup which has already been partially implemented. Overall, though,
this doesn't seem to improve usability much, and change for the sake
of change is bad.

I like this one the best so far anyway, the circular shape seems more
balanced than with it farther moved down like in 3. I am not sure about the
yellow, though, I think a different color (another brown?) may fit better.
Or it could just be me, because as I look at it my opinion on that keeps
wavering. :P

I think, in this case at least, the numbers add a nice positionally
contrasting touch, and really don't call attention to themselves like many
other wallpapers. The lynx itself overall looks very good, but the front paw
looks a bit thick compared to the others, while the tail looks relatively
thin and short compared to how I would think this would look. Both of these
could just be a problem with it having a sort of 2D look whereas the bigger
and smaller limbs are meant to look 3D, but these were what stood out the
most for me.

It's not file size that is the issue, but that the wiki itself locks up

I'm not an official member of the art team by any means, but I can answer
this question at least. The wiki isn't good enough because after a certain
number of images are loaded on a page, it refuses to load any more. Before
Flickr, near the end of the release cycle, new submissions would be unable
to be viewed.

Why would I need this? I keep most of my fonts outside of the default
folders so they aren't loaded when an app starts, as I have a ton of them
and it makes load times skyrocket. If you could implement that feature, that
would make my life SO much easier than what I am having to do currently
(split my fonts into 8 alternative .fonts folders and rename each one to go
through the fonts).

The deviantart link doesn't work.

Also, I recommend you look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork to get a feel
for what the Artwork team does. Please note it does NOT do default artwork,
that is the responsibility of Canonical's hired artists. It does stuff for
the community-themes packages, as well as other non-default artwork.

I like, but the tabs don't feel like they fit with the rest of the theme, or
at least something bothers me about the tabs. Overall this GTK theme is very
clean, though, and with the right window border could be very professional
looking. The current window border provides too little color IMO.

The problem I forsee with waiting too long past Karmic (and indeed 10.04)
would be that we run up against GNOME 3 coming out. This could mean that we
would have to do major repackaging/remaking of many icons, and get rid of
more.

Ah, perspective on Inkscape. I've used it. What you need to do is draw a
trapezoid with the pen, starting from the bottom left corner (if I remember
correctly) going to the bottom right, etc, in the shape of the perspective
you want. Then select the trapezoid, then the shape you want to use
perspective on, and use the perspective plugin (might have to reverse the
order, I can't remember). Keep in mind that perspective only works on one
object at a time, which is why it is rarely used.

I don't like the logo, it not only shouldn't be used (Ubuntu doesn't like
branding) but also looks too rough for me (though, from a stylistic
standpoint, this would probably go great with what Ubuntu Studio has going
on for wallpapers).

I never liked that window border, and I still don't like it. It just seems
gross to me. :(

Also, if you want to redesign metacity, I suggest go straight to te source
and tell the devs what you want, they may be accommodating or they may just
tell you to get lost, but at least you tried.

One thing to note, though, is that one of the wallpaper guidelines is to use
very little branding. That means no logo, no "ubuntu" text, etc. They are
more focused on nice looking than branding. :)

Those 'bugs' should be cleared up by saving as plain svg instead of inkscape

If we were to do the titlebar thing, it would require forking both GTK
and Metacity, neither of which should we fork before their respective
major releases get out of the way (Metacity in GNOME 3.0, and GTK
3.0). It would actually probably require us to modify apps themselves,
not metacity, as the apps have to provide their own buttons for a
window border. I think that this would be virtually impossible with
GTK at the moment, even with modification.

Well, a page to define what we are not might be nice. IE, a page that
explains that we do not develop for the default Ubuntu artwork (that
is Canonical's art team's job), but for the community package. I think
that giving the impression that the 'team' (if you would call it that)
was open is actually in line with Ubuntu's philosophy, rather than it
giving the impression that you have to be some Picasso in order to
join the team. Yes, we do get the bad, but what is the good without
the bad?

So are we, as a team, going to criticize others of our team because
they are tied to one program? I thought freedom was not only freedom
in what you can choose on Linux, but freedom to use what you want. By
trying to force people to use only open source software, we are not
being free in all senses of the word like Ubuntu wants, and are
actually turning into want we are trying to fight against (if you
would call it that, which I wouldn't).

Does it need to be discussed? I think that, since most files can be
saved in freely available formats by most standard programs, then it
should work fine.

I disagree. I think that if it works for you, why should you change?
Most people who use Photoshop do so because they are used to it, and
when they switch over to GIMP they can't create as good art because
they don't know how to use it as well. It could take them a while to
master the new tools. Is it really worth it for trying to contribute
to a free project?

If we restrict choice in this manner, I think the backlash will be
less art from "capable" artists (ie, professionals).

This is my opinion, take it with a grain of salt. ;)

To me, the CD looks like it is flat against the cardboard box
(something hard to do without the CD rolling away). I would suggest
tilting the CD a bit to make it look more like it is leaning. I like
the Debian logo, though. Perhaps a bit darker? It seems the logo might
not be able to be seen at small sizes.

I think the Geng is trying to update the GTK theme. There is no way to
update the theme without restarting the program(s) which use the theme
that I know of. I usually just do as you say (reselect the theme which

I have a question (up and coming graphics artist here). Did you use
any clip paths in those buttons? I would think that using clip paths
and blurred gradients for the outside around the button could make it
look better. If I had the SVGs, I could play around a bit to see if I
can get what I am thinking to work. Would you mind sending them to me

I think, instead of the layered semi-trasnparent shapes, you should do

Are we planning for the icon to represent the current standard or the
future? I think that we should use an SSD drive instead of a spinning
disk drive since, inevitably, the spinning disk will become obsolete
when the SLC SSDs are available in bigger sizes and become cheaper.

1) I like to use Inkscape, but YMMV. Inkscape came from SodiPodi, btw. Try
them all, see what you like best.
2) I don't think so. But a KDE icon theme could be created from the Breathe
icons once they are made.
3) It is fine to me, though I am not an official opinion in any way. ;)

I don't like it. It seems too bright to me. Part of that may be the
wallpaper chosen (it contrasts a lot), but it is also the fact that there
isn't a lot of contrast in the theme itself. That is where Dust and NewWave
shine, they balance the light and dark.

Re: [ubuntu-art] alpha wallpaper and icon needed

2008-12-30 Thread Smartboy
I've looked through all the submissions so far, and here are my opinions:
*Jackalope Sketch:* Great job, Thorston! This has the best perspective of
all six submissions. With a little editing to make the lines a little finer
(not as rough), and this would be my favorite.
*Oblivians Jaunty Wallpaper:* This one doesn't fit with what I consider the
Ubuntu branding as far as wallpapers go. Plus, I never really liked branding
on the wallpaper level. Seems too much like an advertisement at that point.
*Miffan:* The colors don't really say "Ubuntu" too me. The rabbit's legs
also look a little weird. When I think of a rabbit, I usually think of it as
fluffy, this looks a little scrawny.
*Miffan Edited:* Same problems as above.
*Miffan Mod:* In this one, the rabbit's colors look washed out. Colors fit
better though.
*Miffan R3:* This one is also very good. With no Ubuntu logo, perhaps move
the rabbit to the corner a little. Maybe some color adjustments as well
(looks a *lot* like Feisty's wallpaper, imo).

That is my opinion of each entry. [?]

Well, I'm one of those people who thinks that new wave's titlebar looks
strange. I think what would fix it is if you went light to dark with the
gradient, not dark to light. Dark to light intuitively represents a shadow,
and since new wave does this, it makes the titlebar look like its behind the
window, not on the same level as the window. Making it the opposite would
solve this.

Of course, this is my opinion, and I'm a fan of the Dust theme, so take it
with a grain of salt. ;)

Are those pixmaps? If so, I don't think they should be submitted, since
pixmaps cannot have their color changed with the rest of the theme.

The cone looks out of place in this one. You should add color to other parts
of it to balance it out.

Well, I came up with a start for one which is based directly off the
concepts of the Oxygen start button. It might not look the best on the panel
yet due to coloring (the logo blends in a little too much with the
background), but its at least something which looks ok in my opinion. It
does need a lot of improvement though, any suggestions? Its posted on the
submission page.

Here's what I think:
The brown that there looks too dull, and thus it looks like a polished mud

We don't use Emerald here for 2 reasons: 1) It is no longer maintained (the
compiz community is working on a new window decorator); 2) Metacity themes
can be used with both Compiz and without Compiz, meaning less theming and
more bugfixing (after all, even with themes, the less code, the less bugs).

We aren't the official art team, that is left to Canonical and their team of
professional artists. We work on community themes and wallpapers, and if
Mark likes one of our themes, he will use it. There still might be a new
theme which gets added before the beta is released, but I doubt that the
professional art team got it done on time.

Where should I put the icons I create. I am working on some now, but I don't
know if they are very good (since I am not a designer), and one of them
replaces one of the icons on the main page. I was thinking maybe an
"Incoming" page, like the rest of the Art stuff.
