some reflection). Another wallpaper (stock-image from sxc.hu), and
another top-panel. Please ignore the ugly notification-icons at top
right and other glitches - it is all just photoshop mocking! Also, I

Sweet. About the search button, I think we should try to implement
that visual in the deskbar applet, without it having to open a new
window. I mean, an integrated search would be nice. Something visualy
like this: http://awn.wetpaint.com/page/Make+Topaz+Ideas+a+Reality

Maybe Neil Patel knows how to do this, since his is a participant of
AWN community.

Nice icons, by the way.

It's simple, elegant, and saves space.

It's mainly for ideas i guess, since it most likely wont all happen..
I think Ubuntu needs more than just a theme.. it needs cleaner
 functionality / simplicity.

I know some of it might not be what people would want to work on, coding
wise; like the Menu list in the Titlebar (which would have to turn into
a drop down button on the left of the titlebar when a window is dragged
to a small width), but i've seen it done in iTunes and it saves a lot of
space.. We would not really need to do everything exactly if we were to
do it like this mockup / idea..

 What do people think?
I'm open to suggestions / opinions.

Re: [ubuntu-art] using a dark theme

2007-11-16 Thread Tiago Souza
Let me make a suggestion (especially for you, kwii):

I really think we should begin to seriously talk about major changes
in the UI look a year before the release that will bring it, and I
think that we should be doing what we are doing right now six months
ago. Well, nobody could see all these problems coming, so it's natural
that right now we have a very little time scale to do all the things
we want to do - that's nobody fault. But we should learn from our
mistakes, and for the next big change, I STRONGLY SUGGEST that the UDS
talk really seriously about the major look changes two releases early
- that is, a year before. This also opens the space to the UDS discuss
it two times, one in the beginning and another in the middle of the
process, so that mistakes can be corrected without hurry.

For now, I agree with Who - we probably can't have a dark theme this
time around and have the polish an LTS release needs. This is our
oportunitty to make things right (IMHO!) and put Ubuntu in the top
with a beautiful new look - if we don't do that REALLY well, I think
it could be a real big problem...

Just a note: I think we should probably be filing upstream bugs about
apps that don't work properly with dark themes (providing new
art/solutions, if we can... we are an art team - after all!)

While it is unlikely to result in a fix soon, it might mean that a
year or so down the track a user wanting to have a dark theme doesn't
have nearly as many barriers to contend with :)

So, I agree - we probably can't have a dark theme this time around and
also have the level of polish an LTS release needs.

Number two problem is that a lot of contrast between the window (white

Number three problem is that some programs make poor assumptions about
the background colors of some of the widgets. For example, the url

below firefox's form fields. These appear to be black text on
dark-dark grey and are nearly unreadable.

These things will need to be addressed with care.

That being said:
 * The transparency of inactive windows in the ubuntu studio theme is

 * The Orange and grey theme I've been using has turned a lot of
heads. Like the Apple doc, it's long-term usability is questionable
(since the lighter grey affords less contrast) but it sure does
attract eyeballs.

That's even worse than the current icon set! I've a question to all of us:
Is Ubuntu bound to the Tango guidelines?

 No

From my point of view, they're quite unprogressive for a modern Desktop
OS. Tango icons always look too much comic-like and childish (in fact, this
is a good criterion for Tango to be the default look of Edubuntu).
Can't we just release from the Tango dogmas and create something different
and new (but yet regocnizable as Ubuntu of course)?

No. Not just. It is a *huge* undertaking creating an icon set from
scratch (atleast if you want more or less full coverage).

I don't think this will be possible if we still stick to Tango! Or will
there be no discussion about this topic...?

Are we not discussing it? This is not an argument ;-P

Re: [ubuntu-art] New Hardy theme

2007-11-03 Thread Tiago Souza
I could not agree more. I really don't know why Ubuntu have this
childish comic look with default human theme if it self-proclaims to
be a modern alternative to Mac OS X or Microsoft's Vista. Did
somebody ever look at the Mac OS X icons?! Ubuntu is really well
established in solid kernel foundations, is rock stable, it has many
features that put it well in front of these other two, but final
users, simple users, as someone have said, want some eye candy too.
They see this as a signal of a really modern OS. And honestly, that's
not what Ubuntu brings by default.

Simple users don't want to know details about App Armor...they can't
see it! They want a beautiful (and functional) OS! Well, you can say
that with a few clicks you can change the entire look of Ubuntu, and
that is entirely true, but hey, the first impression is what counts,
and when they put the live CD and see the look..

I really think that sometimes all the Ubuntu team (not only us!)
thinks that Ubuntu is replacing Windows XP in old machines that don't
run Vista, and so a XP look is enough..Our main enemy is not XP: is
the modern look that Leopard and Vista brought to new OS's, and that
is what final users see as a modern OS.

checkboxes, new menu entrys, and so on. The current theme looks quite boring

more gloss and choose other corners.
Another thing I have to criticize is that the new icon theme will still
follow the Tango dogmas. In comparison to the KDE4 Oxygen icon set for
example, I expect any Tango style icon theme to be comic-like and too much
child-friendly. Tango style icons fit quite well to Edubuntu, but not to
Ubuntu which claims to be a modern alternative to Windows and OS X.
