Took a few quick screenshots on my box. I am not using the emerald theme
provided by Kim.

GTK - The newest Human 2 GTK from Kim
Metacity - XColors from Murrine Colors (

Icons - Foxtrot

Widget Factory -

Appearance Dialog (Choose Wallpaper) -

On a side note - There is a new GTK2 uploaded to www.gnome-look.org which is
currently rated as the most popular. The theme looks awfully similar to New
Wave or atleast what New Wave was hoping to acheive without the use of a
pixmap engine.

Thats true. I changed them a little bit. They now have orange highlight
on each end so they are more visible.

I tried it with black text, and I don't like it (too much contrast
imo). I made the text darker now, but not completly black.

Yep, I replaced them with orange borders, because they look blurred If
they have no border.

I will make a metacity port of the emerald theme (of course without the
transparancy etc.).

I used the murrine engine to skin these widgets (except scrollbars)
because the pixmap-engine does it not really good. But the I will try
it with rounded corners.

###

others changes:

- fixed notebook-background for the gnome-systemmonitor
- changed Gtkpaned-handles
- removed statusbar shadows

I attached the updated theme.

Re: [ubuntu-art] GTK-theme proposal

2008-07-23 Thread Mario Viviani
The theme is really nice. Just a few suggestions:

1. Make the scrollbar more dark or more visible. Actually is quite
difficult to instantly understand where the scrollbar is located because
it uses the same colour of the scrollbar background.

2. In some apps, unselected text is grey, for example unselected mails
in Evolution or packages in Synaptic. I think it's quite distractive and
not eye-candy. Make them black and it will be great.

3. delete the gray borders of the orange menuitem pngs, it will be more
consistent with thewhite background.

Hope that helps! However nice I think we can move in this direction to
have the I.I theme

Given that this theme appears to have wheels, have you considered
setting up a launchpad project for the theme and using bzr to
coordinate some of the changes. Even if this theme doesn't wind up as
the 8.10 default, it seems reasonable to say there's a couple of
people interested in it regardless and it might give you a compelling
competitive edge ;)

Can you point to a few of them? I agree the buttons evoke Vista so if you or
anyone wants to point out a few examples of something a little more unique,
I'd be happy to take a shot at modding this theme. Other than the Vista
knocks, people seem to agree it looks pretty slick.

i disagree with this. the message it actually sends out is one of a lack
of preparedness - or capacity - to come up with our own fresh ideas.
that which emulates, flatters: what those buttons say is "Vista does it
right, we agree".

the primary question to ask is: is that the best we can do? if we don't
ask this question, you can be sure other people looking at Ubuntu will
ask it for us..

even if there were droves of people running from Vista to Ubuntu, it
shouldn't be a bridge OS from Windows into *nix. Ubuntu should represent
/itself/ as a coherent and individual expression of possibility. this
expression of confidence happens primarily on an aesthetic level for
non-technical adopters. it is the only basis by which they can trust
that the developers knew what they were doing. a bold, well-implemented
visual identity is a fast-track to that confidence.

anyway, they are just buttons for goodness sakes: minimise, maximise,
close. to satisfy that basic pre-requisite - keeping usability in mind -
is all that's required for someone to feel perfectly at home after the
first trial click. i've seen many buttons posted to this list that look
superior to those Vista buttons while serving the desktop image with
greater sympathy.

if i thought another operating system sucked less than Debian or Ubuntu,
i would certainly use it. visually communicating that we know - and
invest in - that Ubuntu is a great platform of diverse application is
the challenge here. anything short of that is selling that investment
out, IMHO.

cheers,

I also wanted to say that I don't have a problem with the minimize,
maximize, and close buttons appearing "Vista-ish". People need to have an
operating system that bears some similarity to what they are used to in
order to feel comfortable with it. I really think this design would be a
real winner for people coming from Vista. Just my two cents

Hey, it seems to be coming along nicely! But IMO, the title bar really needs
to be a darker orange colour. The theme also needs to be more orange/brown
(The Ubuntu Colours).
Good Work though,

Could you make your screenshots the entire window? It's a lot easier to take
in the whole picture :)

I like the vista-like version, I think it goes well with the rest of
the theme.
Only symbols look to boring imo.

I think its looks a bit too much like vista. I attached a screenshot
and the emerald theme (untar and move the resulting folder in
$user/.emerald/themes/ ).

Nice! This is the best color I have seen so far besides my personal
favorite of a gradient white...
Perhaps simple icons would work, without any borders around them? That
would be unique.

How about using what you just did for the close button in the screenshot,
but instead of from the right side corner, the 'button' comes over from the
top of the window. This can be the same for close/min/max buttons?

Also how about a little more contrast between the gtkbuttons and the
window..

You are right, it looked a bit clunky.
I tried something different with the toolbars and used more orange.

I also modified the kin emerald theme to match the gtk theme I'm
working on. But I have no idea what kind of close/min/max buttons would
fit.

Your theme is a good start Kimmik, but it really is too similar to Human,
and looks a little clunky as well, which is one of the main problems with
Human in my opinion. Also, the orange colour isn't orange enough IMO, try
something similar more deep and rich.

[ubuntu-art] GTK-theme proposal

2008-07-17 Thread Kim Kahns
Hi folks,

I spoke with salane about creating a gtk-theme. As a result I created a
wiki page for that:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Intrepid_Ibex_GTK_proposal

What do you think about using the pixmap engine?

Maybe this approach at creating a theme works and we get a good theme
at the end, maybe then it could be used as default theme or at least be
included as an alternative to the old theme.
