Re: [ubuntu-art] NEW Startup Sounds

2006-08-15 Thread Álvaro Medina Ballester
Hello to all! first of all i would like to present myself, i'm new on UbuntuArt. I'm from spain (sorry, my english is quite 'strange') and I study computer science at the UIB (University of Balearic Islands). Ok, so here's my opinion about the sounds:
I really like Sample03. I find it very clear but in my opinion the sound in the end is quite high. Maybe a lower sound could be even better. Anyway I find it very fresh and clean. Great! Also the sound reminds me a lot to Vangelis Blade Runners OST, but is not so 'electronic' as Sample05, so it's great.
What I like about Sample04 is the lenght. Very short but beautiful, simple and effective.Sample05 reminds me more a Jean Michelle Jarre song than a startup song. Maybe it's too 'electric'? but is a great work.
Sample08 is a great clip. More 'Human' or old school than others. Maybe mixing things of Sample03 and Sample08 could be perfect for ubuntu. The rest of sound clips are great, and you have done a great job, really, but in my opinion they doesn't sound like a startup sound. But I want to emphasize that you are doing a great work, really.
My advices:1.- A startup sound must be short, not too long.2.- Include some 'ubuntu style' sounds like the drums in Sample083.- I find 'electric' sounds no inspiring or less 'positive'. The perfect balance is shown in Sample03.
Have a nice day!! Que tengan un buen día!

I like "Sample08" most, but I think the final version should be played
(mostly) with accoustic instruments (or use professional quality samples
of those instruments). Maybe the fade-out should be shorter too and/or
involve some extra notes/sounds being played to "excite" the user more
(currently it's rather flat and "el-cheapo synthy").

(Sorry if this sounds incomprehensible; I'm trying to describe what I
mean but I'm not a musician or anything like that ;-) )

I must say that I'm in favor of short opening sounds. For now, I
think that I like attempt8 ("Message Received") the best, but I think
that the ending might fade out a little bit faster, personally.
Another excellent one is attempt7 ("Piano Spin"), but I feel that it
has a little bit too much of a "keyboard" sound due to the long synth
notes.

"Robot Factory" is perhaps the most typical "opening sound"-ish song,
but again, I simply feel that it's a little bit too long. It drags on
for longer than I would expect an opening sound to do.

Other than that, I feel that they're excellent. I hope you also make
some interface sounds. I'm really interested in those in particular.

Can you try to extend the sond to 14 seconds ? (totem shows 12, most are
13).

Whaou

So nice work !!

my prefered is the Organic Cent. I find that the fade begin too low.
Also, i'd prefer a slightly slower rhythm. Really a few slower. I find
that the "bass" sound isn't enough "vibrating". Making people feeling a
subtle vibration in there body is really exciting. This is were the
current startup sound success.

Impressive !

I totally agree with all your points here, unfortunately making the rhythm too much slower would result in a  much longer sound.  Unless I cut chords :p So I'm unsure as to how I can tackle this,  apart from making the fade out faster.  The vibration is something I could totally sort out, if that theme were approved.

[ubuntu-art] NEW Startup Sounds

2006-08-12 Thread Peter Savage
Hi guys,Not posted a lot to the list lately, but thought I would share with you the latest update on the ubuntu sounds front.  I have created 10 sounds, ranging from the simple to the more complicated, please give them all a listen, there may be aspects from each that you like.  I'm looking at starting to combine ideas now and condense into a good set of solid themes so I can come up with some themes that are closer to the "real thing"
