There is no psd file under this link. It will be uploaded on spreadubuntu.

2011-02-25 Thread Сергей
Sorry for late reply, I hope it's not too late because I can't see this
cover on SpreadUbuntu now.

I like the idea of Tux in "certificate" icon, I don't remember if I said it
or not (can't find it in logs now). Ubuntu is powered by Linux after all,
and it's one if its major pros, so it's perfectly logical to put it that
way.

Tux still looks darker than Ubuntu logo beneath it on my eye.

My next quest is to create a set of CD/DVD covers before Natty is

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork - Getting Close to Final

2011-02-23 Thread EldiS
I think I'm done with this one. Some new fixes are applied on the side
icons, and it is left for considering till tomorrow, what will I do
with front Tux and side Gnome icons. Some people suggested it's not
that much related to Ubuntu itself, so, I don't know...

I will upload this tomorrow or day after in full pack, with CD/DVD
labels, on spreadubuntu and deviantART. And the psd file will be
included, if someone would like to add current edition info or
something.

Here's what final will probably look like:

My next quest is to create a set of CD/DVD covers before Natty is
released, which will strictly follow Ubuntu brand guidelines, to make
it more official-alike. When time is come I will open new theme on
mailing list, so everyone is invited to contribute, with ideas and
concrete work.

Cheers.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork - Getting Close to Final

2011-02-20 Thread EldiS
Thanks for suggestions, but I think I will leave mirrored circles,
cause without them, the front side looks quite lifeless, compared to
back. And too simple, even for this kind of flat and sleek design. I'm
still considering what to do with Tux. Maybe I'll leave it maybe I'm
not...

About the "most important" thing you mentioned, ofcourse I now about
Ubuntu brand guidelines, and I have them saved on my comp for a while
now. But I think they should not be taken as some God's note, and
ultimate law. I find some limitations within them, and this cover
would totally lose its concept, if I remove white tab below Ubuntu
logo.

I've done some covers before (that you can check on my deviantart
page) which followed Ubuntu guidelines, but this time I wanted to do
something on my own, without willing to create some "officialish"
Ubuntu cover.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork - Getting Close to Final

2011-02-20 Thread Alexander Wilms

Hi,

in my opinion you should remove the mirrored circles ( the lower ones)
on the front, as that makes it look too complicated. Furthermore Tux
doesn't have to do anything with the Ubuntu brand, so I'd remove that, too.
And, most important to me would it be to use the Ubuntu logo without the
white background, but with the circle of friends in orange.

Did you take a look at the Ubuntu brand guidelines, they might be quite
helpful: http://design.canonical.com/the-toolkit/ubuntu-brand-guidelines/

Keep up the work

2011-02-16 Thread Pumpkin Lord
Thanks for suggestions.

I will play with things you suggested, to see how it's gonna turn out.
About this Live CD thing, maybe it is better to remove it completely.
Content area will look more coherent, that's for sure. Somehow, it's
leftover from some old buggy OSs, to have that little "32-bit" mark,
or something, on the upper right corner, so i gues I should get rid of
it. :)

About back icons, that is something I'm not finished (and satisfied)
with yet. I wanted to use some Ubuntu pictograms, with some taglines
added below, but I have no idea which ones would make sense to be
placed on a cover, not to look totally out of place and illogical.

Some suggestions maybe...?

I think it makes the picture dis-balanced: the upper right corner looks
visually heavy with this addition, and has no counterbalance. In addition,
it breaks the obvious "frame" of the "content zone" created by consistent
padding.

I usually label my desktop edition CDs "LiveCD", because alternate is not
live and sever is server and doesn't have a livecd at all, so IMO it's
better to use "32bit liveCD" instead of "32bit desktop edition" and get rid
of any corner labels at all.

Also I've finally figured out what's so annoying on the other side: circled
Ubuntu logo, when put in another circle, looks stupefying. It's also
visually heavier than Tux and GNOME logo the way it is now, so it doesn't
look consistent with them.

Hope this helps make an even better cover.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork - Getting Close to Final

2011-02-16 Thread Pumpkin Lord
I waited for someone to notice that small "live CD" addon. Cause I'm
burning all Linux ISOs to DVDs too. So actually there is no big point
in that, except I wanted it to be more "officialish", cause Ubuntu
ISOs are always a CD releases (except alternative DVD edition which is
very rarely used I think), not like recent Linux Mint for example. And
when I'm printing this stuff for myself, I'm always putting "live DVD"
or simply "32-bit". I think it will be removed from the final version,
and maybe replaced with "live DVD" or "32-bit", or with nothing at
all.

About placement, it is placed exactly on the upper virtual edge, like
side Ubuntu logo, and back tab. And on the right side, it is lined
with main title tab edge too, so if someone have some suggestion where
to place it, I'm open for it. To me this current placement seems
logical.

So I guess I will have to play with manual kerning then. At least with
those bigger fonts in titles. Thanks for suggestion. I never had a
nerves to play any deeply with kernings. :)

And about adding noise, well, I don't know. I'm using noise effect
almost exclusively when gradient banding make me to. Otherwise, very
rarely. I wanted to keep this as clean as possible. No gradients, no
shadows, no special effects. Only the flat layers.

Automatics won't improve anything in case of such a stretched font. You'll
have to do manual kerning. Users don't seem to care about it, but lots of
designers are crazy about typography, so if you want your works to be liked
by designers, add some sugar for them too ;)

I've attached a comparison of your current "linux" word and the same word
with manual kerning, so you can decide for yourself if you need manual
kerning or not.
