Re: [ubuntu-art] screenshots.ubuntu.com

2010-11-18 Thread Richard H Lee
Hi,

Thanks for all you input. It was very helpful. I will try and get them
incorporated into the rethemed site.

At the moment we are doing a just a retheming of the site to bring it
inline with the other *.ubuntu.com sites. This is so that when vistors
come to the site they instantly know that it is an official Ubuntu site.
With regards to the suggestions regarding the information architecture
and interaction of the site, you have given some really great
suggestions. I probably would not get time to implement them on this
current retheming, but would love to get them in on a v2.0 of the site.

Thanks,

Richard Lee

[ubuntu-art] screenshots.ubuntu.com

2010-11-17 Thread Richard H Lee
Hi ubuntu art mailing list,

I was half-way through retheming the screenshots.ubuntu.com when I saw
the thread in this mailing list about it.

I can get the basic elements which have been prescribed in the
Guidelines for the Web found here
http://design.canonical.com/the-toolkit/guides-for-websites/ .

What may need a bit more thought are the elements specific to this site,
e.g. the browse by debtags functionality or the screenshots gallery.

It would be great to know what you guys think.

Here is a screenshot of what I have done so far:

The launchpad project and code can be found here:

How about one of these for the header?

Searching for a screenshot happens more often than adding one on that
site?

The empty top left is reserved for Latest_Uploads like active on
http://screenshots.ubuntu.com/ ?

I doubt everyone knows what a debtag is. Doesn't seem important, just
Tag or Category should do.

It bothers me that you can't middle-click a tag to open it in a new tab.

The list would be easier to scan if left aligned. The 2nd level
shouldn't have a different layout. Make it vertical, too.

It would be nice if changing to an entirely different page after
clicking a 2nd level tag could be avoided. It could be more like Apple
Finder's column view, even if that might make the space for thumbnails a
bit narrow.

It looks clean and balanced, but seems confusing for me. It makes me think
it's a website for screenshots of Ubuntu itself, not a repository of
previews for its applications. I'd rather use something like application
screenshots in Ubuntu font or something like that for the header.
The database is shared with Debian where possible, for example, I've
uploaded a new transmission-gtk screenshot today via
screenshots.ubuntu.comand it's already
available http://screenshots.debian.net/image/5912_large.png at
screenshots.debian.net, so IMO we should indicate that it's a cooperative
sprint.

Ah, that wasn't clear to me.

A mixed visual identity would be a nice gesture and surely interesting
to create, but is likely to confuse users who may be unaware of the link
between Debian and Ubuntu (even unaware of the existence of Debian).

Ah, that wasn't clear to me.

Wait, isn't it rather the case that screenshots.ubuntu.com actually
serves screenshots.debian.net? This would not stay this way, then.

Hmm... looks like it is. Screenshots.debian.net aggregates Ubuntu
repositories as well as Debian ones.

[ubuntu-art] screenshots.ubuntu.com

2010-11-10 Thread Ivanka Majic

Hi all,

1) At UDS we talked about me putting out 'briefs' in a place where
everyone could pick them up.
2) I have put a brief up here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/buttons/+bug/673488

Questions:
- does this work for everyone?
- should I assign them to a different project so that people can access
them more readily?

This approach fits into my normal workflow so, from a purely selfish
point of view I would like to pursue this approach. For now, I suggest
posting the briefs to this artlist and then people can elect to subscribe.

Thoughts?

You could also assign the task to the artwork team on lp :
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-art Which will automatically send the
mail to the team. [one less extra task ;) ]

When someone from the team decides to take on the work, they can then
re-assign the task to themselves (from the team) and work on the bug.

[Note: this mailing list is not yet subscribed to the lp team so
everyone here would not automatically receive the notification now, but
this can be fixed easily]

Ivanka,

This is certainly a project that would add value to Ubuntu and the
community. I find it awkward using Launchpad bug tracking in this manner but
with a blend of wiki maybe this will work. :-)

IMO it needs a blueprint which can be linked to the specification.

I am willing to draft a specification with milestones for your
consideration. I don't know what the requirements are but we can discuss
that in a future dialog.

I will also include assumptions as discussion points.

I can have v1 of the spec ready by 11/15 or sooner for your consideration.

Is this agreeable?

John
