However, a decent compromise is to install "The Widget Factory" select the theme you're working on from the menu and use the refresh button on the toolbar to update it as you work on the gtkrc. Obviously this will not work for the panel, etc; but you can fine-tune the basic stuff there. Hope this helps. I'm a wallpaper fanatic and have a few hundred megabytes that I've collected over the years. In this moment in time though, I think there's a world of possibilities that haven't been explored yet with SVG wallpapers - and that's only going to get more interesting when the desktop is drawn with all the cairo and glitz stuff. (i think those are the right geek terms, at least cairo is). Either way, making art.ubuntu.com into a huge repository can't be anything but a good thing as far as I'm concerned. :o) -- Aaron Ubuntu SVG Artwork - http://www.volvoguy.net/ubuntu --- Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere. ~ G.K. I would much rather see vector art being produced for backgrounds, calendars etc. Photos are problematic in the sense of file size and subject matter. Backgrounds are simply that - backgrounds. Simple, non-distracting , pleasing to the eye images are best. From a professional standpoint, detailed backgrounds are just too distracting. If you want to have a picture of your cat on your screen, go nuts. Its your desktop. I agree... most raw photos can be at least slightly enhanced with some judicious use of adjustment layers in photoshop. For example, levels and saturation adjustments can make a tremendous difference. I will have some time today/tonight if you'd like to send me some photos I can touch them up and optimize them for you. I'm not that good at creating my own art, but I'm very good at doing touch-ups. You can send me the photos directly in your highest resolution jpg (least compression) or png (10 MB max) and I'll send them back to you optimized. I'm in central time zone (GMT - 6) and will have some free time between 9:00am and 11:00 am this morning and after 9:00 pm tonight. I can usually optimize a photo in less than 5 minutes (major exception being poor scans), so if you want to send me 10 - 20 I should be able to get them done. If you can do this yourself then I'd upload them to the art site in jpg format with the least compression. For example, in photoshop you can set the compression level to 12 (the highest setting) and you will rarely see a jpg artifact, even on text. -- Matthew Nuzum www.bearfruit.org -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Re: [ubuntu-art] NewBie
There has been some photography talk on the list lately, so I thought I might as well throw my to cents in here to. While good photography can provide really good backgrouns, they seldom cut it if they are used "raw" - ie. with out being reworked. Simply sticking a logo on a photo won't do it in most cases either (though there may be exceptions to this ofcourse). I'm not saying that everything should be as heavily reworked as http://art.ubuntu.com/backgrounds/ubuntu/52, but a little touching up never hurst :-D If there are photographers out there wanting to share their footage with the world they could be a great resource for the art team. Not that I have the time right now, but I would love to work on some quality photography :-D My own digital camera combined with my own photography skills is not exactly something that is bound to produce miracles if you get my drift ;-P Cheers Mikkel Kamstrup Senectus . wrote: Does the Ubuntu art group accept Photo submissions? -- Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 CNet News.com: So that would be the philosophical difference between Microsoft and what Google is up to at this point? Welcome! >* what is the maximum res accepted as wallpaper > (Typically my pictures are 3xxx,2xxx size for print > purposes) It seems as though on most sites, the high-end for wallpapers is 1600x1200, but there are other things to factor in like widescreen displays with different aspect ratios (my brain isn't working well enough at the moment to tell you what they are) and possibly dual and triple monitor wallpapers (one image that spans two or three monitors - so max sizes might be 3200x1200 or 4800x1200). >* what is the criteria for acceptance For photos, I'm not sure. There's currently no option on the art site simply for photos. If they were to be submitted as wallpapers for potential use directly in Ubuntu, they would need to be licensed in a specific way, but for the life of me I can't find the link that explains all that right now. It's some variation of the GPL, LGPL or one of the Creative Commons licenses. >* Is png the only format that the pic needs to be > submitted in ? Actually, JPG (with as little compression and artifacts as possible) is probably the best option for straight photos. If the Ubuntu logo appears on the images though, PNG is the best bet as you won't get the typical JPG blotchy artifacts in the in the logo. With high resolution images though, you may need to do some experimentation. A JPG with little compression may end up with a significantly smaller file size than any kind of PNG. >* Is the Ubuntu Logo mandatory on all pics ? Hmm The issue hasn't come up before, so it may require some discussion here. On one hand I'd like to see some nice photography done by an Ubuntu user that is suitable for wallpaper use, but on the other hand, I don't think it's quite right that art.ubuntu.com turn into a photo gallery hosting service. Perhaps you could submit some of your favorites with the logo included, and mention in your profile page that you have more photographs for potential wallpapers hosted elsewhere. If you have a website and can do a gallery, that would be great. If not, you could use a service like flickr.com. Then as you (or others, if your photos are licensed as such) make Ubuntu wallpapers out of them, they can be added to art.ubuntu.com. That's my "up way too late, sleep deprived" thought. :o) > I would like to present a small'er version of the > picture I would love submit to the ubuntu art under > the Creative Commons license. I'm embarrased to admit that I haven't submitted anything to the art site yet (and I won't bore everyone with my aches and pains story again), but I believe it creates the thumbnails for you automatically when you submit a piece of artwork.
