That thread was posted about a month after Feisty was released. It's been

Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu mockup

2008-08-05 Thread Dylan McCall
I don't think many people haven't seen that. It's a very popular mockup ;)

I am not at all convinced on the idea of docks with big icons being
the be-all end-all of pretty interface design. In fact, I think it is
an absolutely bizarre and stupid metaphor better replaced by an
application list (instead of window list). The dock does replace the
notification area for "iconifying" processes, but is visually
confusing; there is not much to say "this program is running" and even
less to help the user find said running program in a well populated
dock.

One detail I rather like there, however, is the more visual
NetworkManager applet. Right now, it has the same serious usability
problem as Apple's and Microsoft's: People do not notice it. Nowhere
does it actually explain being for wireless network connections until
someone drags his mouse over it or clicks on it. Since it takes up so
little of the screen, the chances of that being discovered by someone
who does not recognize the icon are very, very small.

NM 0.7 is much more verbose than the older ones, using libnotify to
make status known, which should help discoverability. (I don't
remember if it does or not, but "wireless networks are available..."
would be a useful message for it to display once, then never display
again). It would be extremely cool if there was a little label beside
the NM applet describing its current connection. That, however, is
again not art territory.

In a more mockup-related thought, I like the different panel
backgrounds there. It gives a much more expressive shading effect that
could be useful to split up the two different types of panel applets.
(Those being the applets to execute things on the top, applets to
switch between and observe things on the bottom).

I, too, have always been a fan of the soft, sandy brown seen on the
wallpaper and bottom panel.

That's one hell of a metaphor. Ha...

I think the sandy color palette could work nicely as an alternative to the
louder oranges and browns that I've been seeing while still screaming *

boundaries need exploding with this release and not long left!

People, just to let you know, my mockups moved to
http://www.smartboy.salocinlinux.org/db/Ubuntu%20Hardy%20Mockups/

Also, I finished the major work on my
mockups. I may work on lowering font sizes and such. Here is the latest version:
http://www.smartboy.salocinlinux.org/db/Ubuntu%20Hardy%20Mockups/ubuntu-mockup4.png
I also made some with alternate wallpapers:
http://www.smartboy.salocinlinux.org/db/Ubuntu%20Hardy%20Mockups/ubuntu-mockup4-alternate1.png
http://www.smartboy.salocinlinux.org/db/Ubuntu%20Hardy%20Mockups/ubuntu-mockup4-alternate2.png
http://www.smartboy.salocinlinux.org/db/Ubuntu%20Hardy%20Mockups/ubuntu-mockup4-alternate3.png

I am going to make a wiki page for my stuff soon.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Mockup

2007-12-20 Thread xl cheese
You can make prelights for inactive windows so there's no extra click involved.

I think having the plain "_ O X" without any button borders except for
prelights looks nice and clean. I did that in this theme:
http://www.gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre1/71800-1.jpg

I may play with the idea of not having any visible metacity buttons until a
mouse over and see how it feels in a real theme.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Mockup

2007-12-20 Thread momo
I think that it's not a question of resolution, it's just that the elements are
too big. The font size is HUGE (it should probably be half the current size).
Also, the top and bottom bars could be thinner. Another think that I
poersonally find weak in this mockup is the lack of details (just simple
gradients an thick borders don't visually atract me)

Try to make a 1024x768 mockup, it's one of the most common sizes. And ALWAYS
check the proportions by switching the the mockup's resolution. You will the
clearly see if things like font or icon sizes are OK.

I don't think it's a very good idea, since it adds an extra click in case I
want to minimize, maximiza or close an inactive window. Instead of beeing
hidden, the buttons should be grayed/faded to reduce the graphical
complexity ot the desktop, but they must sill be visible.

hehe, i thought the absense of buttons was deliberate.

i like the idea of having no visible Minimise/Maximise/Close buttons
when a window is inactive.. this reduces the graphical complexity of the
desktop - something that should be encouraged where possible.

this of course would require that they become active on a mouse-over
event without bringing that whole window into focus. perhaps impossible
in the current windowing context.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Mockup

2007-12-19 Thread Ken Vermette
You didn't come of as meaning to hijack when you posted your mock-up, no
fears! Anyway, starting a wiki is pretty easy!

1. Go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate (or the
sub-wiki of your choice)
2. Halfway down the page there's an "Alternate Submissions" section, with an
entry to create new concept pages. Enter in the name of your page/theme and
hit the "Create new Concept Page" button.
3. You'll be given a template that rambles on about the majestic platypus.
Replace anything that isn't relevant, but keep the general layout intact.

I don't know if you work with wikis, so heres a heads-up:

-People can come in and edit your wiki. 99% of the time, people only edit it
to add comments into the comments section.
-You can subscribe to your wiki after you create it, at the top of the page.
This will email you whenever changes are made, and keep you up to date.
-It will automatically update your table of contents and attachment list for
you.

Hope that helps!

Hi there Ken,
How do I start a theme wiki?

And sorry Mikkel, wasn't my intention to hijack the thread, I just
thought I would continue the mockup-title-thread, seemed logical at the
moment :)

Jan Niklas, I don't think it looks like MacOS. I don't know exactly what
you're thinking about, but of course we will have the default gnome
setup with top panel and bottom panel (which isn't present in my
mockup). Joining the window's titlebar and menu also looks neat and is
rather fresh, while MacOS has no visible division between the window's
parts.

Daniel Moore, I know exactly what you mean... I also like some more
minimalistic themes. A good minimalistic theme might look very cool.
Thinking of some Murrine themes, GAIA themes

Looks nice indeed. But doesn't it look too much like MacOS? (except for the
color palett of course)

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Mockup

2007-12-18 Thread Ken Vermette
Excellent work guys!

Thomas, I love the colour layout and your use of gloss (I'm a fan of gloss
myself); Keep up the good work.

If you don't have a theme wiki, you should definitely start one!

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Mockup

2007-12-18 Thread Daniel Moore
The colours work really well. I'm not a big fan of the superfluous
transparent borders or the faded out menus. I'd like to see
everything much more crisp, then I think this theme should be a
serious contender. The dark brown is a fantastic touch.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Mockup

2007-12-18 Thread Thomas L.G
Oh well since we're all mocking up now, let me throw in a suggestion as
well:
http://www.portefolje.net/div/mockup.jpg

Based on Ken's suggestion on this list. Some modifications (darker top
area + some reflection, hover, consistent menus, dark notifications with
some reflection). Another wallpaper (stock-image from sxc.hu), and
another top-panel. Please ignore the ugly notification-icons at top
right and other glitches - it is all just photoshop mocking! Also, I
didn't make any minimize/maximize-icons yet, I really don't think we
should use the Vista-like ones...
