Re: Ubuntu-au Obsolete? or needing a revamp?

2009-09-03 Thread Blindraven
I for one know that SLUG (Sydney Linux User Group) is very active, has
monthly meetings which are packed and a very active mailing list. They have
a monthly "SLUGlets" meeting where newbs get together and talk about newbie
material, and a lot of them are Ubuntu users.

Firewall Distributions, Questions.

2009-03-02 Thread Blindraven
# cross post /u-au/slug

I am looking to set up a hardware firewall using an old computer and a Linux
distribution and am curious about a few things.
To start with, I'll attempt a diagram to show you how my network is
currently set up.

My home network is set up like so :

   Modem/Router
  |
 _Switch_
 |   ||  |  |  |
   MBMF FS DT U1 U2

*(MB) - Mythbuntu Back-end
*(MF) - Mythbuntu Frontend
*(FS) - Fileserver
*(DT) - Dedicated Torrent | Downloader
*(U1) User (me)
*(U2) User (wife)

I am assuming with 2 NICs in the old computer, you dump it between the
switch and the router and connect both the switch and modem/router to it.
So it would look something like

 Modem/Router
  |
NIC1
 Firewall
   NIC2
  |
 _Switch_
 |   ||  |  |  |
   MBMF FS DT U1 U2

Based on my set-up, which of the following would you recommend and why?

pfSense, MoNoWaLL, Clark Connect. (Do you know any others?)

I understand policies could be configured for all of them to allow SSH etc,
but I'd like something that does not require me to mess with modules
extenively as I am not *tha*t technically savvy.
>From what I've read pfSense seems to be the go, but I wouldn't know why
exactly.

Smoothwall is out of the question due to its lacking NIC driver support.

Any suggestions greatly appreceated,
Harrison.

Re: ubuntu installation

2008-10-02 Thread Blindraven
It will comes with everything you need to get started, and is extremely easy
to install.
Regarding Microsoft Word, Excell, PDF documents and the rest - Just get open
office.

You can obtain Open Office here - http://download.openoffice.org/other.html
Download the English .deb

For a simple .pdf viewer I'd go KPDF but it's a matter of preference really.

I used to use http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/overview.html to get myself
up and running but there is a more up to date alternative called Ultimatix
(which I won't link) but a lot of elitists do not like as as it does thing's
in a way contrary to how they think things should be done. Even if it does
not really, except for vastly insignificant minority - do anything but save
you time and ease the transition process.

your call.

Have fun.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the question, I just think this
mailing list is generally a little bit more higher up on the technical food
chain for such and it's kind of expected that you'd have sorted all the
really trivial stuff out by yourself or on the forums/irc etc.

Retrieving old keys.

2008-06-22 Thread Blindraven
Hey!

I have installed Ubuntu on a new PC and am curious how to retrieve my old
keys.
They are uploaded at
http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/lookup?search=blindraven&op=vindex
The first 2 keys are the ones I'm after as they are the ones assigned to my
Launchpad.

I have forgotten which key was for email and which was for singing as well.

2008-01-22 Thread Blindraven
I just read over the blog. I loved the turtles but was then put off by one
of the rants about people who intentionally misspell M$. yes, I said it, M$.
I've been using Linux since slack was born, and was forced to use other
sloppy *ixes and bashups beforehand. If I want to hate Microsoft and call
them names, I bloody well will. And I'm sure the hundreds of thousands of
other individuals who feel the same way will continue to do so also.

Its funny, in contrast to reading that statement (*not sure who wrote it*)
that lately not only ubuntu-au but a fair chunk of the sluggers have been
injecting this "Love thy neighbor" propaganda in to the otherwise
unsuspecting viewer. As if to somehow imply that "*Playing nice with
Microsoft scores us cookies and maturity points*" Well it really doesn't.
The only thing it does is tell us a thing or two about what kind of person
you were at school.

Not all of us would act the same we if we dropped the soap, and I'm getting
tired of being told I should play nice with pigs.

Sorry, where am I going with this?
That rant annoyed me. GAH.
*Breathe Tony, breathe*.

Wow, Allowing M$ business and tech to be at a FLOSS event because you are
trying to be open minded and accepting.
I wonder if thats what Hitlers wife had to do.

If this is not selling out I don't know what is.
Feel free to flame while I feel free to /ignore.

Count me out.

Reminder to "reply all".

2008-01-05 Thread Blindraven
Good evening ladies/gents, I trust were all sick of this confusing weather!!
(Sydney).

Just a heads up to everyone who has been replying to me re: my Gentoo post,
and in general because it keeps occurring. If you forget to hit reply all
you are sending emails directly to the person and not the list. The whole
purpose of the list is that everyone gets to read through, share their
opinions and people can kind of sift through stuff and hopefully find
something that is useful to them, I know I have on many occasions.

What actually led me to this email was the pure extensiveness and effort
that has gone in to the replies I have received. Not only do these people
miss out on the unsaid list credit of helping, others will miss out on the
help I was lucky enough to receive.

I'm ranting, in short.* Reply All.

*Hope you all have an excellent weekend.
Regards,
Tony.

Gentoo anyone?

2008-01-03 Thread Blindraven
How much would it cost to hire someone, anyone, to come around and not only
install Gentoo, but take me through what you are doing etc? you know, teach
me the ropes?
(Before anyone gets carried away, I am perfectly aware of all the
documentation on the subject).

It would have to be while my other half is at work, which obviously narrows
this down to pretty much the [EMAIL PROTECTED] or the unemployed.
The weekends are not feasible either unfortunately.

Me? I'm in my mid twenties, been dabbling with Linux since Slackware came in
30 odd floppies. Never got in to Gentoo and I think I'm about ready to let
go of Ubuntu (or the safety wheels).
I'm actually starting to feel held back by Ubuntu. No, I do not want to get
in a 20 page discussion about it *grin*.
I'm going to go ahead and cross post this in the aus-loco/ubuntu list
because I know not everyone only uses (or is proficient) with Ubuntu.

Cheers guys, and happy new years to all.

I was thinking the same.
Their excuse was a big fat cop-out.
