Do you have hp-lip installed? Rather than wait for the mods, here is what I posted earlier: I only use HP printers because I find they have the best support for Linux and a system tray app that works well. I have been using Ubuntu for about 7 years and HP printers (wireless and cabled) for about 5 of those without any hassles (I threw out the Epson and Canon printers because they just didn't play as well). The main thing I need to do with each new printer is make sure the connection is setup correctly otherwise it can have problems scanning, throwing a lot of Device not found IO errors. To get them both working (printer and scanner) I create separate printer connections for both. Here is a link to the screenshots showing the different connections: Printer Setuphttps://dl.dropbox.com/u/1590391/Printer/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-16%2007%3A29%3A29.png Scanner Setuphttps://dl.dropbox.com/u/1590391/Printer/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-16%2007%3A30%3A00.png Both connections use the same driver but I find doing it this way gets both working flawlessly every time. The most annoying this was that my credit card was flagged as stolen just days before, I wanted to give them the number to pay for their services, but they wouldn't take it until they were done. I couldn't get an XP VM installed in time for them to login to it. In the end I told them that they had called an IT consultant and that I had enough information to track them down. During the call they gave me a callback number which I tried from my mobile to see if it was legit, it worked during the call and immediately after it, 20 mins later it stopped working. Based on some research it was a SkypeIn number. I also reported them to GoToMyPC or whatever service they were using for the remote login, I got a positive response from them in a few hours. I have never got a virus call since. Every time you string them along it is a lot potential victims they can't call because they are busy with you. We also decided that the name InstallFest was a bit misleading and discouraged other users from attending. Therefore I propose we change the name to Ubuntu-AU Workshop, Ubuntu-AU Open Day or something similar and market it as something people can come to for help installing, general problems or just curious. I would also like to suggest that other locations join in on the action and create their own local events. So from what I can tell we need to do the following: * Decide what to call it * Organise co-ordinators and volunteers for each location wanting to participate * Create loco.u.c events * Organise a venue (we found public libraries had free meeting rooms that were great, we also decided to pick them as close to free parking and public transport as possible). * Market the events * Hold the events Thoughts, comments or questions anyone? -- Regards, Jared Norris JP(Qual) BBehSc(Psych) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JaredNorris -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

eReaders probably wouldn't work. They're pretty flimsy, and most don't have keyboards (unless you wanna fork out for a Kindle Keyboard). What about some cheap Android tablets? Re: Brisbane Installation Festival
I can bring other snacks (drinks, chips, etc.), but only if the venue's easily accessed by public transport - mothers aren't thrilled to drive their children all around Brisbane so they can go somewhere. I'm free for the entire holidays after Boxing Day (I'll be all unpacked from the move and the relatives will have left), so any date is really suitable. Regards, Boden Matthews, http://bodenm.wordpress.com On 9 November 2011 11:46, Jessica Bogaart jboga...@gmail.com wrote: Hi guys I think the library option is probably a good way to go - much more economical, though they shouldn't charge us anything as it's a community event and we're not charging anyone anything. I called the Brisbane Square library a few days after the release party and asked them about it - they couldn't confirm available dates in January then, but I'm sure that they could now. My vote is holding it at Brisbane Square, if we can't secure funding for The Edge - it's central and close to public transport (but might not be so convenient for those with cars... though it is a nice walk over Victoria Bridge!). Anyway, I'm happy to chip in with organisation, promotion and cup cakes, and Vadim will be there to help with the technical stuff on the day. We should probably lock something in sooner rather than later, though. I had the impression that these things fill up quickly, particularly in the school holidays. A lot of workplaces are closed for the first week of January (including mine) so holding it on a weekday wouldn't be a problem for us. Weekends might draw more people, though. It seems to suggest you can do it for free if you're a community organisation and not charging money for the event. Unless I'm reading it wrong. Either way, the whole day costs less than an hour at The Edge so I'd be willing to stump up the lot if need be. Regarding planning and funding: Plan the cart you would like to push out to start with, then see if any horses come along. As far as manpower is concerned, there's no problem here - I will be there. Good to hear! I'm hoping if we can lock in a date and time it will help others decide if they can be there or not as well. I've got a script that I just wrote to make updating a new installation a little more painless. You do the new install from the try ubuntu boot and with no internet connection (so the install only takes about 15 minutes) and when you run the script it puts all the current .deb files into the correct directory on the target. When the system is then logged in and updated it only has to download the software lists and update the cache - all the updates are already there. If the target directory has not been created by ubiquity the script waits until it is. As an extra benefit it works with any release, based on the major kernel version, you just need to have the .deb files for any release that you want to update. (and of course I have a creation tool for the archives as well.) I've also been working on keeping a full ubuntu repository sitting on my USB hard drive. It should make needing internet not required for 99% of the installations. I also have a Telstra home network gateway (that is essentially a 4 port wireless broadband switch) for any weird ones that pop up. I'm happy to have some meetings regarding this, is an IRC meeting suitable? IRC, wiki, mailing list. Anything sounds good to me. I would definitely like a mock run through a week or two prior (even if it's my place) to reduce technical issues on the day. Hey guys, I got a response back from the ACCC about this, reply is attached below. Such illegal market practices include price-fixing, market-sharing, resale price maintenance, misuse of market power and certain forms of exclusive dealings/boycotts. ** ** Section 47 of the Act prohibits exclusive dealing. Broadly speaking, exclusive dealing occurs when one person trading with another imposes some restrictions on the other’s freedom to choose with whom, in what, or where they deal. Exclusive dealing is only a breach of the Act where the conduct has the purpose, effect or likely effect of substantially lessening competition in the market. In an assessment of the effect of the conduct on competition, it is not enough merely to show that an individual business has been damaged. The wider market for the particular product or service must be considered. ** ** The situation you described may raise issues of exclusive dealing, but it is unclear from the details provided whether it would be likely to meet the competition test described. ** ** In assessing any complaint, staff of the ACCC would generally determine whether or not the matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Act, whether or not there appears to have been a breach of the Act, and if so, whether the impact of the conduct is so serious and widespread that it is appropriate that the ACCC should take some action. * * It should first be noted that in general, investigations are conducted confidentially and the ACCC does not comment on matters it may be investigating. Further, complainants will only be contacted by the ACCC where clarification or additional information is sought. ** ** It is important to note that the ACCC cannot pursue all the complaints it receives. While all complaints are carefully considered, the ACCC must exercise its discretion to direct resources to the investigation and resolution of matters that provide the greatest overall benefit for consumers and businesses. The ACCC’s Compliance and Enforcement policy describes in more detail how this discretion is exercised. This policy, which is available on the ACCC’s website [www.accc.gov.au], lists a number of factors that are weighed including whether conduct raises national or international issues, involves significant consumer detriment or a blatant disregard of the law. ** ** The Act also allows an affected party to take their own legal action for a breach of the Act. You may wish to seek legal advice on the possibility of taking your own action in this circumstance. ** ** Thank you for contacting the ACCC with your concerns. I think we as a group need to discuss how best to utilise the accounts/groups that we currently have, and decide what could be changed to improve their functionality. My proposal would be to set up a Twitter and identi.ca account for Ubuntu-AU that could be used to broadcast events and other updates to users of these services. Currently there is an identi.ca group for Ubuntu Australia, but as far as I know there is no way to post messages as the actual group. By having an official Twitter and identi.ca account, people might take more notice of upcoming events that have been posted. Also, I have been looking into the benefits of a Facebook page vs a Facebook group. A good comparison of both of these can be found at http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-groups-pages-2010-02. One main benefit I can see of having a page over a group is the ability to set an easy to read URL for a Facebook page, as opposed to using a long, convoluted URL that is set for a group. Also, a page will allow you to post as the page, rather than as yourself in the group. Possibly it would be useful to have both a group and a page, so events can be shared slightly easier through the group, but posts can be sent out as the page. I have added an item to the agenda for the next meeting on June 10 for us to discuss social media use. For those who cannot attend the meeting, please send through your thoughts to the list so they can be raised at the meeting. Well, I have found somewhere to go that sounds good, Norita Cafe Board Games in the CBD. The food is relatively cheap, especially compared to most places in the city, and they have free WiFi. For those who are interested have a look at http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/70/1514238/restaurant/New-South-Wales/CBD/Norita-Cafe-Board-Games-Sydney . If you have anything to add please feel free to contribute and make sure you upload or link more photos so we can all share. I would just like to thank all that turned out, it was a great day and it was made really easy by the number of people willing to get in and give a hand. I will be writing up a wiki page in the coming weeks to have a place to store all the information that was learnt about what worked and what didn't. I would also like to remind people that we have a couple of hundred CDs left over from the day for a number of different reasons. Instead of letting them sit around my house getting old (they are the 10.10 32 bit desktop versions) I would love to distribute them in a useful manner. Please think about any way these can be used to promote Ubuntu within the general public (hand them out to your computer class at school? Donate them to a library? Hold your own Ubuntu stand at a TAFE/Uni Open Day?) and email the list so we can get them out to you as by the time April rolls around there will be a new release so we can't hold on to them for too long. Ubuntu Natty Narwhal (11.04) - My Thoughts
Hey all, I just thought I'd pop by and give some thoughts about Natty Narwhal Alpha 1. I do like the new font, and the updated version of Rhythmbox. But there is one thing I absolutely HATE about Natty. Unity. Horrible, annoying and impossible to use on anything with no touchscreen. Why, oh why Canonical, did you choose friggin' UNITY for a DESKTOP version of Ubuntu?! GNOME is a lot better, to me Unity makes Ubuntu look like a skinned version of Mac OSX. Which I also hate. I am removing Unity and installing GNOME as we speak, hopefully GNOME will work fine. Ubuntu MID (Mobile Internet Device) Remix - Does anyone know what happened?
Hey all, Does anyone know the demise of Ubuntu MID Remix? Apparently it's first and only release was based on 8.04/8.10. I am buying a HTC Shift x9501 (7 UMPC) later this year, and I saw this turn up in a google search. They said it was aimed at devices with an Intel Stealey CPU (Shift has a Stealey A110 @ 0.8GHz) and a screen size of 4.5-7 inches. Also, does anyone know of a good release for this type of device? If it helps, here are the specs: CPU: Intel Stealey A110 (800MHz, primary CPU - for use with Vista)/Qualcomm MSM7200 (400MHz - for use with Windows Mobile instant-on mode) secondary RAM: 1GB DDR2 MicroDIMM ODD: None HDD: 40/60GB (depends on model) Screen: 7 TFT resistive touchscreen Mouse: HTC MicroPad Networking: 802.11a/b/g WiFi, Cellular Network (GSM - triband), Bluetooth 2.0+EDR OS: Windows Vista Business (changeable/upgradable, primary)/Windows Mobile 6.1 (With proprietary SnapVue instant-on mode, unremovable, secondary) Other: Fingerprint scanner, 0.3MP webcam, 1xUSB2.0, 3.5mm headphone jack. IMHE it is often the CTRL key that fails on laptop keyboards (being in a position prone to abuse, high use and spills). If you're confident with hardware, remove the keyboard and clean it, and see if that helps. Compiling Smolt under Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, Developmental Release
Hi all, I need some help compiling smolt for Ubuntu. I don't normally compile for Linux, as most programs I need are available from Synaptic Package Manager. Smolt is a little bit different, as it's only available in source code, or prebuilt packages for RPM-based systems. I spoke with the creator, and he said that at one point there was an unofficial package for Ubuntu, but not anymore. So I want to compile Smolt for Ubuntu, and then submit it to be added by Canonical. But there is one problem. In the tarball, there is no configure file. I have already tried autoconf, but it gives an error about needing an input file. Does anyone know what file I'm supposed to give to autoconf to make it work? If you want to look through the source code, https://fedorahosted.org/releases/s/m/smolt/ is where it is hosted. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
