All of this will help to determine whether the hardware has been
recognised and setup correctly. I know my netbook needed a
proprietary driver which I was able to enable from the 'Hardware

Hi,

Just thought as another David, I could add to this thread :)

It looks like the line...

> Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:0151 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Mass
> Storage Device

...is an internal media card reader. Do you have a card in the
internal reader when you boot? If so, try removing that before boot
up.

There are ways to boot in safe mode or recovery mode or something too,
which shows all the startup messages scrolling up the screen. If you
get there, you may see some errors about what the problem is.

Re: Ubuntu and e-tax

2010-03-31 Thread David Whyte
Hi Geoff,

Last year, I got e-Tax working on my netbook using Wine. I certainly
had success in doing all the sections but I didn't try two vital
things:
1) That pre-roll thing.
2) Submitting the actual claim. I ended up going to an accountant.

There was some work I had to do to get Wine working fine for e-Tax,
just adding some extra windows libraries I think. There was a nice
script that helped me install them that I found somewhere.

So to sum it up, I was sort-of successful with using Wine :)

These are the instructions that I got from the developer when Eclipse
was doing the same thing (on its splash screen):

"Hmm, it seems it doesn't set the correct window_type hint hence maximus
doens't know that it's a splashscreen.

Can you please run

$ xprop | grep WM_CLASS

in a terminal, click on the splashscreen and then paste the output here
please.

It is a bit tricky to do this due to the distinct lack of space on the
screen, so I normally:

- Set the terminal window to be "Above all windows"
- Run the command in the terminal
- Alt+F2 and type in prgram name
- click on the splashscreen

Thanks.
"

Just do the same, but for VLC I guess.

Installed from USB stick now can only but *from* the USB stick

2008-09-25 Thread David Whyte
Sorry for the long and technical post.

I installed Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 6 on my new Dell 910 netbook. To do
this, I used a USB memory stick with the mini.iso on it and installed
by sucking the packages from the net. I did it this way rather than
using a full disk image because I use approx to cache packages.

The install went quite well however, I have now noticed that I need to
have the USB stick in the USB port and manually select to boot from it
if I actually want Ubuntu to boot up. If I didn't do it this way, it
would simply try and network boot, ignoring the hard disk completely.
I have since set the 'boot' flag on the HDD using GParted and it at
least tries to boot from that HDD now, but complains that there is no
valid Operating System.

Looking at my drives, the USB stick is recognised as /dev/sdb and the
HDD is /dev/sda as you would expect. /dev/sda does have a proper boot
folder etc. The only real anomoly I can see is that in the file
/boot/grub/menu.lst the 'root' option for each menu entry is set to
'(hd1,0)'. Is this normal?

Any ideas of how to fix this problem. If I need to re-install, I can
do that now I have all the packages cached but I would rather not.

Whytey

It is more than a wrapper. It uses many sources incase the Yahoo
pages get updated so the Yahoo script doesn't work. And it also gets
data from IMDB etc to give you more information about movies. It also
flags any shows that are in HD as being HD. And it can get your
channel icons into mythTV. And it auto-updates.

To be honest, I don't know. The best place for these sorts of

guarantee it has been asked before though so a quick search of the

Best way to set TV-Out to be PAL

2008-05-14 Thread David Whyte
Hi all,

I have an AOpen miniPC which has an Intel 945 graphics chip which I
use for TV out.

On my PC screen, everything is perfect. When I plugged it into the TV
last night, via S-Video to RCA cable, I didn't have to make any
changes to xorg.conf to get TV-out working or anything, (I was most
impressed) but the desktop was black and white

After doing some research, I found that this was a known issue and the
Intel driver needed to be told to use the PAL standard manually. This
is possible from the command line using the following two commands:

xrandr --output TV --set TV_FORMAT PAL;
xrandr --output TV --auto;

which instantly made the picture perfect.

I put the above two commands in /etc/rc.local and rebooted but I still
had a grey screen.

I am wondering if there is a better way to do the above or if I should
just configure my xorg.conf to only ever use the TV-out display and
use the Options directive to inform it to use the PAL standard. I
think the only problem then would be subsequently trying to use a
monitor...right?

Any ideas?

The 900 model hasn't been released in AU yet. It is the one with the

Wireless network card won't connect to router

2008-02-01 Thread David Whyte
Hi,

I installed Gutsy on my brothers laptop tonight and everything went
OK, except the wireless network card doesn't seem to work too well.
It can detect my network and when I select my router using Network
Manager it pops up the encryption key dialog. I enter the key (i use
64Bit Hex) and the icon in the status tray shows that it is trying to
connect, however, it always fails. Sometimes, after trying a couple
of times, NM crashes and the laptop starts to behave wierd (i.e.
System tools don't show when started, commands run in the terminal
fail to execute, etc) and I have to reboot.

I don't think this is a driver issue as I am at least finding the
router and it identifies that it is encrypted, but I have been stumped
all night. I am using the acx driver, since this is a D-Link DWL-650+
PCMCIA card.

Does anyone have any ideas? Would it be worth trying the Ndiswrapper
and would that still behave OK with NM? Is Ndis as hard to configure
as all the different How-Tos make out?

Any help is appreciated.

Whytey

Upgraded to Gutsy but wrong kernel is being booted

2008-01-28 Thread David Whyte
Hi,

I did the upgrade to Gutsy from the Update Manager on the weekend and
whilst everything seems to be running just fine, I do notice that when
the default boot kernel is still the old 2.6.20 one from Feisty. The
new 2.6.22 kernel is installed however.

Linux myth 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I don't recall ever modifying the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to specify
a particular boot image, however, I may have done. I would have
thought that I would have gotten a notification about that though when
the new kernel was installed.

Attached is the menu.lst file. It seems to have a 'default' entry,
should I just set that to zero, or will that prevent any future
updates from becoming the default?

I don't have an EeePC (yet) but I really like its form. Anyways, I

Grrr, I use approx to cache/mirror/whatever the downloaded packages
inside my LAN, mainly to save on precious bigpond bandwidth, but also
to speed up the update process. With multiverse not being mirrores by
Telstra I am not sure whether I can simply use the following
configuration in approx.conf

ubuntu http://mirror.pacific.net.au/ubuntu/
ubuntu http://ubuntu.apt-get.eu/ubuntu

and let it fail over to the normal Ubuntu repository when updating
multiverse. Does anyone have any insight into this?
