 I went for pysupport; I had other issues completing the backport, but
 the natty .deb seemed identical before and after the switch, and the
 build-deps seemed to be compatible with lucid.

 I'd like to keep the source identical between natty and lucid backport,
 which dh_python stuff can I assume will keep working?  I could use
 dh_pysupport for instance, but will that go away?

Indeed your intuition on not backporting python-defaults/python agrees with 
mine. In cases like this, my recommendation is to make minimal source changes 
necessary to linaro-image-tools to make it build against lucid. Such source 
changes stand a much higher chance of being accepted, and much lower risk of 
causing unwanted side effects to other packages.
