It lets you fine tune authorizations. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg brings back the default settings, but If I want to have my own settings I have to manually change it, Yes I can use the new X configuration tool, but Its looks little crowded for me :p T. Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hardy bitterness
KDE3 was a stable release. Any software should be released after it is feature complete and stable. There will be bugs. The update or patches will fix those. But half-done software must not be tagged as a release. When KDE4 is arrived it should not have missing icons, it should not have unstable plasma. Everything should be usable in a release. Then if a bug has been found, patches can be released. The point releases are also for added features not only bug-fixes. Every development has at least three branches, viz., trunk, experimental, release. A trunk is a current development, experimental is where wild imaginations take place and the stable release. PulseAudio is THE future for Linux audio backend. But since it is not properly integrated it must not be bundled in a 'production' release. It is possible to continue the integration development without pushing it in a 'production' release. For a normal user, a solid GUI and Audio backend is must for a 'production' release. I don't care if Firefox/OpenOffice is beta or not. But the Xorg and PulseAudio cannot be half-done for a 'production' release. Also almost everyday gnome gets fixes which sometimes freezes X. Even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work, which must fire Bulletproof X, right? Bulletproof X has everything to do with hardware detection. It checks for the faulty configuration which in first place is auto-configured by X itself. If it does not let me configure manually by myself, it must work like a breeze. A distro is made for integration of the available software. We use ubuntu because it works out of the box. Anyone willing to spend time can build a complete Linux OS using all the technologies and software out there. When someone clicks in a mailto link in Firefox, Evolution opens. This kind of integration is done by the distro developers. Before they include any software to the distribution, they should check it thoroughly whether it works or not. If PolicyKit is not done, then leave it, don't push it to the users. Right now, there are 11 updates are waiting on my Hardy. I am at home on my iMac G5. I am using VNC to access the Hardy at my office. It has linux kernel update, which may require a restart (this is another problem, it does not tell you whether the update requires a restart). If I restart the machine now I cannot access it from home via VNC. Now tell me, shouldn't I be pissed of? Nasim -- M. Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hardy bitterness
There is a kernel update today. It updates to 2.6.24-19 version. It has broken my VirtualBox. Cause they didn't provide the virtualbox module. Also I cannot build it as the linux source for this version has not been pushed to the repository. As I mentioned before kernel patches are very much welcome but not X or gnome patches so frequently. There are stable versions for these two. I am very much surprised that you did not have any problem with PulseAudio. AmaroK doesn't know about this PulseAudio. You need to configure it by yourself. I cannot make PolicyKit to remember my choice, if I want to auto authenticate some preferences. It is not integrated with Keyring manager. Also, take a look at the Network Settings window. You cannot do anything there without unlocking. Then why the hell this Unlock button is needed there. It should be authenticated at the moment it launches like previously it did or Synaptic still does. If I could click on something without authenticating in this window, it would make sense. About KDE, we were not talking about Hardy's default version. We were talking about the release of the KDE4. Gnome has a clear versioning system where you know which version is for developer and which one is for the user to use. KDE4 released it to the user not only for the developer. It really makes bad image of the OSS. Not-even-half-done software release makes users angry and they do not look back to it. They start to think, like you did, OSS has no stable version to work with. Everything is unstable, ugly and unusable. That is so not true, you know. People who want to test bleeding-edge software know how to get it and where to get it. KDE need not make a release to test their software. Take compiz for example. It was not included in any distro before it became stable. Ok, I mixed up the auto-configuration of the X with Bulletproof X. But again if X cannot do it automatically it should let me do it manually. The previous stable versions let the user to do it. Ubuntu devs should stick to the previous stable release for the moment. -- M. Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hardy bitterness
You probably have a miss-understanding about the policy kit, Its not supposed to auto authenticate user neither remember those information. Its certainly not supposed to work with Keyring manager. According to PolicyKit introduction in freedesktophttp://hal.freedesktop.org/docs/PolicyKit/introduction.html#intro-about PolicyKit is an application-level toolkit for defining and handling the policy that allows unprivileged processes to speak to privileged processes: It is a framework for centralizing the decision making process with respect to granting access to privileged operations for unprivileged applications. PolicyKit is specifically targeting applications in rich desktop environments on multi-user UNIX-like operating systems. It does not imply or rely on any exotic kernel features. More explanation PolicyKit Docs http://hal.freedesktop.org/docs/PolicyKit/ Why do you think current version of Gnome is not stable already? Its certainly much stable then previous versions as it contains all the recent bug fixes and patches. I'm yet to see it crush. Same goes to X server. After the final release the GDE have been solid for me. Not a single crush. The more recent version have more less bugs, more less bugs means more stable applications. So I welcome every updates. Again you can always turn off auto updates if you don't like. KDE's version system is different then Gnome. KDE was released to the publics so that interested normal users can start trying it, but they've been worn, Its not KDE developer's fault if someone tries to use unstable and incomplete version. Whats stopping you to manually configuring X? I had to configure my X configuration manually when an update broke my X (during alpha period), I just switched to other terminal(Ctrl+Alt+(1-6) and edited my xorg.conf file and restarted. I know I still can do that if I have any problems. Amarok worked out of the box with pulseaudio for me ... thats updates does for you ;) T. Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hardy bitterness
I am not sure how long are you using Ubuntu! I am a die hard fan of Ubuntu. I am using it since it's birth. I know every detail history about it. There were never this much update for any other version. The release are meant to be stable. That is why there are many cycles during the development; namely, alpha, beta, pre-release, release candidate etc. etc. The moment, a software is released, it is considered to be stable. No software should be labeled release if it has beta software all over. I cannot finish the list of beta software included in the Ubuntu. PulseAudio, PolicyKit, Firefox, Bulletproof X, i.e., Xorg, AmaroK, QtOctave, Rkward, Vinagre, etc. And PolicyKit is a gnome thing for sure, but it is the part of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is not a standalone software. It is a compilation of the existing software which assures you to have a solid integrated experience all over. My point is if something is not finished do not include it. I don't like Fedora only for this reason. They put every experimental thing in the release to test it by the user. If I want to test the cutting-edge software I can use Debian Sid. I am not using Ubuntu for testing software. Since it is an LTS release. It is a production release. A production computer should not be updated frequently, if not never. The Xorg problem is everywhere. Almost everyday people are complaining about the resolution. You are really lucky not to have this problem. Every single piece of hardware in my machine is Linux supported. I never buy anything that is windows only. That is why I never had any high-end AGP or Sound card. Hardy must not be labeled LTS, that's for sure. Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hardy bitterness
I cannot finish the list of beta software included in the Ubuntu. PulseAudio, PolicyKit, Firefox, Bulletproof X, i.e., Xorg, AmaroK, QtOctave, Rkward, Vinagre, etc. First you are forgetting most OSS softwares are almost never considered 'Completed' in sense of Commercial applications, they are in constant development, you can say most of applications are never out of beta. For example do you consider KDE4 as Full version, if you do you are making a mistake, KDE4 is considered buggy and beta version, Version 4.1 will be the stable version. Most of the application you've mentioned are added after they've been found stable. As KDE4 was not completed it was not added to this release. Its been like this like forever. Go ahead and check out bugzilla or Launchpad's Ubuntu section there are thousends of bugs waiting to be fixed for years. Ubuntu Dev did some mistakes in integrating Pulse Audio though. they should have provided the Pulse Audio utility applications. However, Have you checked what were the the updates? the updates were not related to these applications you are mentioning, Most of the big updates came for hardy are security updates/kernel updates. Few major security vulnerability was found in several internal codes thus triggering these updates, You should be impressed at the Ubuntu devs, as they provided you the updates this fast, within 1/2 days of the vulenrbilities were found. Thats what LTS is about, Giving users a secured and stable OS, providing security updates as quickly as possible. of course there will be more updates then previous versions. Current release is far more vast then older versions and there are far more security attacks now. An Production machine must stay updated so that there is no security issues left. The Xorg problem is everywhere. Almost everyday people are complaining about the resolution. Go ahead and search the forums, hundrands of people also complained about the resolution problem, for every other versions of Ubuntu, you didn't noticed it cause you didn't had it. PC platform is so vast, its rather impossible to not have any problems. PolicyKit is Developed and integrated by GNOME developers not by Ubuntu developers. Ubuntu developers integrated the GDE to their distro. Hardy is just released, it have a long time infront of it (not for me, I'll update to the next version as soon as it releases :p, that's what I've been doing for last 2 years) It'll be a solid distro, I believe. Its not that High-end AGPs are not supported in Linux, rather you are to have problem with low end ones. I've a rather high-end one for My system w/r/t its lifetime. works great.
