আমি জিমেইল ব্যবহার করি এর ওয়েব ইন্টারফেসের অ্যাডভান্সড ফিচারের জন্য। ডেক্সটপ
ক্লায়েন্ট ব্যবহার করা আমার জন্য মোটেই সুবিধাজনক নয়। আর যদি বেসিক এইচটিএমএল
ব্যবহার করতে হয় তাহলে যদু-মধু-কদু মেইল দোষ করল কি?

আরো একটা কথা হচ্ছে ফ্রি সফটওয়্যার ফাউন্ডেশনের কিছু কিছু ব্যাপারে আমার নিজের
ভাল রকম খটকা আছে। 'ব্যবহার করো না' বললেই তো কাউকে ব্যবহার করা থেকে বিরত রাখা
যাবে না।  MS Word এর বদলে OpenOffice Writer ব্যবহার করি কারণ এর ফিচার
কাছাকাছি। এখন OO Writer এর বদলে আমাকে AbiWord ব্যবহার করতে বললে আমি অবশ্যই
সেটা ব্যবহার করতাম না। হয়ত পাইরেটেড MS Word ই ব্যবহার করতাম। কারণ AbiWord
দিয়ে আমার চাহিদা পূরণ হবে না। আমাকে উপযুক্ত বিকল্প না দিলে আমি ফ্রি
সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহারে আগ্রহী হব কেন?  GNU প্রজেক্ট বা FSF এর উপর আমার কিছু
বিরক্তি আছে এই কারণে।

আরো একটা ব্যাপার হল বলা হচ্ছে আমি যদি জিমেইল ব্যবহার করি তাহলে গুগলকে বলব
তার প্রোপ্রাইটরি জাভাস্ক্রিপ্ট উন্মুক্ত করে দিতে। এখন কথা হচ্ছে আমি তো
জিমেইল ব্যবহারের জন্য গুগলকে পয়সা দিই না। আমার কথা গুগল পাত্তা দেবে কেন? আমি
যদি জিমেইল ব্যবহার করা ছেড়ে দিই তাহলে গুগলের তেমন কিছু আসবে যাবে বলে তো মনে
হয় না।

FSF যদি উন্মুক্ত কোড ব্যবহার করে জিমেইলে কাছাকাছি, অন্তত ৭০% সমতুল্য, একটা
সার্ভিস চালু করে যদি ডাক দিত যে ভাই এটা ব্যবহার করুন, তাহলে নিশ্চয়ই সুইচ
করার কথা গুরুত্বের সাথে চিন্তা করতাম। খালি আমি কেন, আরো অনেকেই নিশ্চয়ই
চিন্তা করতেন।

My bad. It looks like I failed to explain the analogy properly. Ok,
let me try again.

Once you have written a thousands of documents using MS Office which
has some proprietary/non-standard elements in it (e.g., Equations,
Endnotes, etc. so called user friendly interfaces). You cannot move
**easily** to any other office software.

Let me give another example. I hope the audience won't be too young
for this. If you have millions of ASCII Bijoy or some other
non-standard Bangla documents, you cannot move to Unicode Bangla
instantly.

So the point is not a specific software but the document standard.
Since you are sending mails in plain text or HTML formats through
gmail. As long as the email standard is maintained there's no real
harm in using it via free software.

commenting on Nasim's statement, "...Just like windows and MS Office. Once
you are committed to windows and MS Office it's very hard to use any
other software. Not only for the user friendliness but also the
file formats."

sharing information, via email twitter facebook blog and what not? we are
even using third party image/file hosting companies. In reality you never
have total control over the information you share online, if you are so
scared about your data being leaked or being used in any way you don't like,
stop being online (yah that's backdated thought, but its the only way out).

Yes, Gmail is a closed/proprietary software. However, you are not
forced to use the HTML version of the Gmail. You can easily use your
own email clients with POP3/IMAP. If you are really committed to not
using any proprietary software, just don't use the web interface. Use
any open source email client like Thunderbird, KMail, etc.

If you want full control of your data and privacy then you have to
have your own email server on your own machine. Any kind of 3rd party
server will have a copy of your data just like gmail does.

The phrase "taking control of your computer" does not mean that google
can watch your computer or can go inside your computer. It means that
if you use a proprietary software and rely on it very much then you
are controlled by the company. That is, it might be difficult to
change your software later. Just like windows and MS Office. Once you
are committed to windows and MS Office it's very hard to use any other
software. Not only for the user friendliness but also the file
formats. Which means the incompatibility introduced by the proprietary
software developers are hard to overcome when switching software.

It is good to raise the awareness and try to open source the gmail
eventually. But there's no security issue of getting yourself hacked
by Google.

Therefore you can either completely stop using Gmail or use free (open
source) email client.

Anyway, Having copies of my emails in google servers give me peace of
mind. It's very unlikely that I'll loose my emails over my lifetime.
And I cannot afford myself an email server built with my own hardware.
I'd trust google much more than any other random email host services
on privacy and data protection.

Java, JavaScript and ActiveX : ওয়েব ডেভেলপাররা এসব language/script এ কোড
লিখে রাখে, যা ওয়েব ব্রাউজার execute করতে পারে। এ কোডগুলো অনেক সময়ই দরকারী
হয়, তবে Inturders (মানে অযাচিত ইউজাররা)  এর মাধ্যমে তথ্য সংগ্রহ করতে পারে
(যেমনঃ কোন ওয়েবসাইট ভিজিট করা হয়েছে ইত্যাদি) বা malicious (অনিষ্টকর) কোড রান
করতে পারে।

So, it is recommend that you will disable Java, JavaScript and ActiveX, if
you are browsing web sites that you are not familiar with or do not trust.
