current
colour palette though the primary desktop colours might change (within
the limits of the colour palette (ie. see the changes from Hoary to
Dapper)). :)

Hello everyone! first of all (off topic) I want to apologize because
I don't have enough time to reply all the e-mails, I'm quite busy
finishing my career, so sorry everyone.
Ok, I've read a lot of times in a lot of websites/blogs etc. this
statement: people don't choose ubuntu because of brown/orange/red
tones. Some people would think that this is a worthless discussion
but I find really interesting.
I think that I said before in another discussion, that what Pascal
Klein in saying isn't the only thing that we have to consider about
the colours of the distribution. We need to realize that User
Interface is a science, and it's not just trying to separate ubuntu
from another distros/OS's. In my opinion, and what I've learned, the
colour palette must be useful for make ubuntu different _and_
functional (gray , blue or light shades are a great colours to make
your desktop a confortable place to work) both.
But I would go further, I find more important the user experience,
the usability, all those facts related with Human Computer
Interaction than just making ubuntu different. The visual aspect of
an app or an OS now isn't focused on what the programmer likes, now
it's a _very_ important part of the computer science. Now is as
important as coding.
So why we're taking this fact (ubuntu general look/aspect) just
thinking in being different than the others?
Why not try to be _better_ than the others?
Yes, I know that this is quite insane, but, why not reconsider ubuntu
general look?
Maybe not for Feisty or Gutsy, but we can start thinking about for a
future version. Maybe we can plan a great launch for ubuntu, not just
a 6 months version, and we can start thinking about the interface of
that big launch. I know, this is quite weird, but that would be a
great chance to win new users.

Earth tones can work wondefully towards communicating 'earthy' ideals when implemented in the design structure. That said, when you fail to apply those notions, or worse -- as Ubuntu does -- use 'brown' just for 'browns' sake, you end up in a mire of mediocre design. Again, it is no huge leap of faith to suggest that brown _can_ work when supported with thoughtful design. Colour alone will do __nothing__ to change a user's opinion. Thoughtful design _will_. Ultimately, poor design will yield complaints that are all over the map. Generally, people will choose the most obvious thing -- in Ubuntu's case it is brown. It is less about the brown and more about the absolute vacuum concerning design matters relating to audience and communication goals. Middle grey 'appeal to everyone' mentality creates _zero_ 'must have' or 'need' in _any_ individuals mind. Yeah ! I love your idea ! For example, when installing from the live CD, after selecting the language, it would ask to select a theme... and the theme would be instantly applied to the current live ubuntu (it would be the same window than the gnome theme selector), and then it would be stored so that when ubuntu is installed, it is already with the theme selected at the installation ! sorry for the bad English... I think it would be really neat to see what the world can come up with. Naturally, this is not a project I could see being completed in the near future, and it would certainly take a certain degree of cultural sensitivity. But, I think it would be really empowering, then, once ubuntu started up to have a selection of 5 or 6 themes that were perhaps based on these culturally-derived themes so that anyone who runs ubuntu can immediately feel, Hey, this OS feels right--it's like it was made for me. We offer a selection of languages at install time, why not a selection of themes, as they seem to be culturally relevant (or at the least, personally subjectively relevant), as well. Hi, I think that Brian has a very good idea although I am not sure if it is realizable or not at this point in time. Why not create an entirely flexible theme which can be adjusted by setting certain values? The installer asks you several questions; one of them could be What is your favorite color? (ok, maybe I am simplifying things here, but you get the idea). I think this idea is worth investigating. Of course, this would rely on a *very* well implemented color scheme - funny how that keeps popping up, eh? LAMP stands for Linux Apache MySQL and (PHP / Perl / Python). For desktop applications, *good* knowledge of Python and PyQT bindings will help you build desktop applications for KDE. For GNOME based desktop applications, it is preferable that you use GTK+ / GTK2. I'm not an expert nor do I really use these for my projects. I'm only aware of what, the above are used for. So you are new. Well, programming language is just a personal preference. THe main core is common language paradigms and your algorithm. All thing depends on your view/perspective to look at the problem. So, you will completely be lost in this circle, which language to choose and what to make. Here is some information you will find useful: System Programming and Web Programming/Scripting: If you want to develop system oriented programs or solutions. These are projects like building kernel, system tools (like copy, paste, grep, awk), compilers (perl, php, python)... these types of work are done usually in C/C++ etc middle level languages. (Assembly is not preferred, though it produces lot optimized code, but u cannt do OOP, etc in assembly, so large projects are never accomplises). Java is good programming language, through which you can make cross platform applications (can be run on Linux, Windows, OSX etc, without recoding, just compile for specific platform). Python is best in features (afaik).. I will tell u later how. NOw if you want application programming, on Linux, you can use C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, PHP and lot others (yes PHP too, you can pack and make PHP codes executable, google about it). For having GUI (Graphical User Interface), you have many libraries. On Linux, it GTK+ for C, GTKMM for C++, QT for C++ , PyGTK for Python, GTK for PHP and many other too (like motif, tk). But use what modern desktops standards are (GTK+/GTKMM, QT). Now comes Web programming, solutions and scripting. There is HTML all know LOL. (XHTML is now standard). Web applications can be made using PHP, python, Java (JSF, JSP), ASP (hell no), .NET (Mono for Linux .NET) etc. Then there is Javascripts. Its cool, though not much flourished scripting language. NOw you know there are bunch of solutions to a single Problem, Which Programming Language to use? And take my word, its all you to decide, just analyze the problem and decide the solution. Give much time deciding other factors too, it will give you more insight of your problem and quality of your judged solution. And never ask this question, haha. Else, others will have to write this much again. As I said, Python is Great, WHY? Python cannt produce final output as size and speed optimized as C and C++ will. But then why python. Because it got many things in its bag. Its powerful because you can write complex solutions in just few lines of codes and it does job well. But since the python interpretor will be always there in middle to execute the task, it will be little slow (but u cannt feel it on modern computers). Also, its like scripting language, write the code in somefile.py and execute it. No need to compile. If u want executable, you can make it. You can do great job. This was about the application programming using python. You can do web-application programming using python too. Just like PHP. but better than PHP, as u can implement the OOP much easily and program like standard, where PHP lacks this style. Python is much performing than PHP. Python is used by Google, NASA etc in various task, other than C++/C. So if u learn Python, you can do Application and web Programming . If you are master in one programming language, you can learn others in short time. Believe me. And experts dont evolve in little time. It takes 8-10 years for a person to be master or expert. Its the research i read on web, where it was shown how. So have patience. Bye BYe If you cannt decide what now, just stick to C++, whre you will learn the main funda of programming. [ubuntu-uk] Primer on networking - any recommendations
Not of the TCP/IP type networking, but of the smb/nfs variety. I seem to have got myself into a bit of a pickle with 'folder sharing' over three boxes, 2 Ubuntu and 1 XP which I've set up, in a fashion, using the point and click tools. My systems have changed over time and this set up isn't now right - I don't seem to be able to add a new folder to be viewable by the other machines or delete existing 'links'. I'm so ignorant of the subject that I'm struggling even to get the right terminology out for this begging email, so what I could really do with a primer so that I can get a better idea of how it should work, then I can start to ask some sensible questions. So, anyone got any recommendations, preferably with a Linux bent 'cos my knowledge of Windows is minimal in this respect. need some help with the top panel
Hi, I notice when I go to the top panel, sometimes I can use the arrow keys to hear volume control and so on. However most of the time this doesn't work. Is there a command I am suppose to use after getting to the top panel to expand dialog for this menu. Pois bem, abri um terminal (CRTL-ALT-F1), loguei em modo texto, e tentei deletar o programa, com um sudo apt-get remove orca, o que não foi bem sucedido. Então fui até a pasta de usuário dela e mandei apagar a pasta invisível .orca que havia lá. Reiniciado o siatema, tudo voltou ao normal... Experimente esse raciocínio da próxima vez que algo de estranho assim acontecer, pode ser que lhe ajude. [Ubuntu-BR] Bloquear orkut com eficiencia - SQUID + IPTABLES?
Olá pessoal, bom dia, tudo bem!? Acredito que esse assunto ja deve ter sido discutido aqui, pesquisei e testei algumas confs porem ainda sem sucesso, o usuário é sempre muito criativo :) . Gostaria de saber como os demais colegas teem feito para bloquear com eficiencia o danado do orkut. Aqui em minha rede faço uso de iptables com squid funcionando como proxy transparente e alguma coisa em algum lugar não esta dando certo. No Squid pelo pouco que vie e pesquisei temos mesmo probpemas para bloquear https, isso confere!? Pois ele é proxy https não é!? Sendo assim, bloqueiei a palavra orkut atraves da acl regex para o bloqueio normal. Foi então que os usuarios descobriram que https passava. Bom dai pensei comigo, facil, bloqueio isso no iptables e pronto. e foi o que fiz. Porém ainda é possivel conseguir o acesso via https. Onde posso estar errando!? Será que tem algo no squid que quando é feito o redirecionamento ele deixa passar o https!? Não tinha como funcionar. Eu nem vou perder meu tempo justificando, perguntei se era free pq geralmente entregam copias em feiras e afins Mais se o Rabugento como ele mesmo se auto afirma se sentir prejudicado eu copio e entrego para outros usuarios em cds de 1 real, nao tem problema. Não sei se acontece com vocês mas aqui enquanto eu estou distribuindo o Ubuntu sempre aparece um que não entende que pode ser distribuido livremente e dizem que não querem pirata eu sempre explico mas acabo por entregar um CD original e juntamente peço que procure entender mais sobre o assunto. Meus 2 centavos: 1c = realmente não faz sentido você pedir os cds se não tem como distribuí-los. Eu pedi 5 cds do Kubuntu 6.06 e não tive tempo de distribuir todos antes de sair o 6.10 (ainda tenho 2). Portanto acho que, a menos que você seja membro de um grupo de usuários que tem movimento de divulgação ou esteja disposto a atuar MESMO na divulgação eu não acho correto pedir os cds. Eu não vou pedir. 2c = quem tem que avaliar se é correto pedir ou não é o usuário. Mas é uma boa idéia nós da lista sugerirmos parâmetros para os pedidos, para que os novatos não cheguem de cara na lista pensando em pedir 50 cds. Portanto, nem o colega foi ofensivo ao fazer seu comentário (pelo contrário, prestou um serviço à comunidade) e nem o outro precisava se sentir ofendido. Afinal, quem sabe se precisa dos cds é ele e além do mais ele estava apenas pedindo uma informação (mas do jeito que ele pediu poderia estimular novatos a saírem pedindo cds a esmo e nós não queremos quebrar a Canonical, queremos?). Eu vi que o espaço do ubuntu tá cheio. obs: um ponto para o ubuntu sobre o kurumin. Temos um notebook com kurumin que não achou a rede de jeito nenhum. [Ubuntu-BR] Arquivar conteúdo de uma partiçã o.
Ando pensando em fazer uma formatação geral e instalar meu sistema a partir do zero, mesmo, inclusive trocando o HD principal. Fazer isso vai significar: * Comprar um HD novo, de tamanho, marca e idade diferente. * Particioná-lo de forma totalmente diferente da atual * Formatar todas as partições como ext3 --- e não metade Reiser e metade ext3, como hoje. * Restaurar o conteúdo do backup para as partições e reiniciar o sistema usando o mesmo Linux de antes, sem ter que reinstalar. Pergunto: isso é possível? As partições menores( /dev/hda1=/ e /dev/hda2=/home) têm menos de 4.3 GB de dados, o que significa que cabem num DVD. As outras partições têm muitos dados. /dev/hdb1 tem 15 GB e /dev/hdb2 tem 28GB. Essas eu não estou pensando em fazer backup total pois não vou mexer nesse HD. Qual a melhor solução para mim? Feisty está com comportamento estranho e se agravando. Já não consigo mais chegar ao gdm, o sistema morre no meio do caminho. Isso começou com as atualizações posteriores ao kernel 2.6.20.14. Refiz a instalação várias vezes, inclusive com reparticionamento e nada resolveu. Estou usando o kernel 2.6.20.12, mesmo assim, com um demorado boot entre o grub e o gdm. O cdrom também não está mais sendo reconhecido. Alguém tem problemas desse tipo com o Feisty? Já pesquisei internet afora e encontrei referências somente no launchpad mas esse problema era com um macbook que havia sido solucionado justamente com o kernel 2.6.20.14. Meu caso é um pc com placa intel D946GZ. A lista é minha ultima esperança, se não conseguir solucionar vou reportar ao launchpad como bug. Deve haver alguma incompatibilidade do Feisty com o chipset/hd sata/controaldor do hd porque tenho também o Linux Mint(edgy) instalado em outra partição e funciona muito bem. Eu já tive um problema parecido em outra distribuição, mas se aplica o mesmo ao ubuntu, é um chute mas causa exatamente o que esta acontecendo contigo, então desculpa se não tem nada a ver, mas dá uma olhada se você tem espaço livre na particão / e no /home(se forem partições diferentes). Hello: My name is Mike Feravolo and I run a small computing solutions business in Cocoa Beach, Florida. We advocate the use of Ubuntu and other open source software applications to other small businesses. We attend numerous business functions that are run by the local chambers of commerce and meet a lot of people in the media. Many of these publications have space that they allow organizations to let people know about events that occur on a regular basis for free. Anyone that can write 20 - 30 words or so that describes what a LoCo group is and that everyone is welcome to join and the meetings are at (fill in the blank) time and anything else would be really awesome. Then all the other Loco can use it too if they like in their local press. The other thing is maybe we can sell some of these small local publications on running some kind of feature story on Ubuntu. This is a lot harder then the announcement copy that we need for our Florida Loco. But I did what to let everyone know that a good feature story about Ubuntu could also be run in more then one publication too. Dear all, As mentioned in previous mails, the Bxlug will organized and man a large booth presenting free software and contents, during the Wentenschap -ExpoSciences on May 4, 5 and 6, 2007 at Heyzel, Brussels. This is a very good opportunity to present FLOSS to young and their relatives and teachers. As the event is bilingual, we are looking for several Nederlandstalige friends to help and give some talks. Hi, I just had a phone call with the organizers of the WEXS fair and I have some more info about the public the opportunity to organise a conference. At this time, there is about 170 projects presented by french speaking students (about 2200, mainly from primary school), 30 projects presented by foreign delegation and 20 projects presented by dutch speaking students. The event is multilingual but mainly french speaking. I think dutch speaking people must be present on the ubuntu/bxlug stand but we need more french speaking people. There is a conference/workshop room in the fair and, at his time, this room is still free friday (but busy the other days). интеграция vnc

На счет монтирования не пробовал, но в репозитарии системы присутсвует пакет mdf2iso, который позволяет конвертировать из mdf в iso файлы. Которые затем монтитуются легким движением руки... Релиз Кандидат перенесли в связи с тем, что в дистрибутиве много не исправленных ошибок. The Ubuntu 7.04 release candidate (due today) has been delayed due to bugs discovered during validation testing, specifically problems with certain ATA chipsets and problems with the connection status displayed by the network-manager panel applet. There is no updated ETA yet, but the core development team is actively working on the problems and expect it to be a matter of days.
