We have uploaded a new Natty linux kernel. Please note the ABI bump. This brings a rebase to upstream v2.6.37-rc7. It also brings a couple of regression fixes which are affecting testing. My base system is.an Ubuntu 10.10 system. I also recently installed arch Linux. My point is want to know why so much different in setup on the network side for both Ubuntu and arch 1. In arch /etc/ there is no /network/interfaces file 2. Also to start stop networks there seems to be. Different My question is whether Ubuntu does a lot of customization or just the process differs in all distros. Also a lot of the Ubuntu setup of files in /etc and other places comes from the way it is setup in Debian. For eg: I believe the /etc/network/interfaces file is present on Debian but I cannot recall seeing it on Fedora either. Hi all, As you probably know...Virgin are coming out with a Tivo pretty soon. From what I've read up on it there isn't any mention of Wifi, it does mention though that it has an internal cable modem and it has it's own 10Mbit Internet connection for things like WebTV (Youtube etc). You might get a definitive answer from something like the Digital Spy forums (digitalspy.co.uk) which have specific cable forums. Failing that you could try giving Virgin a call (although it would be hit and miss if you get hold of someone who knows what they're talking about). Team Wiki Header
Good evening Ubuntu-AU'ers, Harking back a few meetings ago there was some debate over the style of the front page of the team wiki - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam - as to whether is should be a table or text. To this end I quickly knocked up a bit of a header to try and make some quick links easier to get to. Now I have had some time I have gone and made a proper header for the team page. If you could please give me some constructive feedback that would be appreciated. For example are there any quick links you think I need to add? The goal of this would be to use this header on ALL of the team pages to quickly navigate around the team wiki as required. I am only putting it on the front page for now just to get some feedback and so you can all see what it looks like. I would appreciate people who are not intimately familiar with editing Ubuntu wikis to just post suggestions to the list as there is actually quite a lot of linking and effort in the current set up. As always if there is groundswell of support to revert the changes there is always the option to do that. Not happy at all
After having finished the Lucid-e1 Dutch translation I took a look at
Lucid-e2 on Launchpad. I discovered that 25% (415 strings) was
untranslated, but when I checked the first untranslated string I
noticed that there was only a minor change. Most of it was like in
Lucid-e1, but someone had translated the whole string all over again. I
am afraid this is the case with most of the untranslated strings. When
there is a minor change, LP will not copy the translation of the string
from Lucid-e1, which means that people start translating the whole
string all over again.
It is sad that a lot of effort and hard work is spent on something that
has been done already.
I see no quick solution to this problem, but perhaps it is better NOT to
make minor changes, unless it is really necessary.

translated twice:

It's unfortunate that the `fuzzy' feature of gettext is not supported
in LP, and there have been previous discussions in the manual team
about what to do, but there's no really good solution as it is.
The best solution for the time being is to export the po-files of both
manual versions from Launchpad and use msgmerge to merge the
translations from the old one into the new template. This will
produce `fuzzy' strings in the new template, which can then be
reviewed (although offline). You may find a po-editor useful, as well
as podiff + wdiff.
It's a social problem that one will have to specifically prevent
contributors from wasting their time by contributing to the wrong
version in Launchpad. Try to communicate over a mailing list and
agree who does what in which version. That's all the advice I can
give.

If this kind of translation is not transferred from e1 to e2 I see no
quick way of reviewing 415 strings that have been retranslated in the
form of suggestions.

It's unfortunate that the `fuzzy' feature of gettext is not supported
in LP, and there have been previous discussions in the manual team
about what to do, but there's no really good solution as it is.
The best solution for the time being is to export the po-files of both
manual versions from Launchpad and use msgmerge to merge the
translations from the old one into the new template. This will
produce `fuzzy' strings in the new template, which can then be
reviewed (although offline). You may find a po-editor useful, as well
as podiff + wdiff.
It's a social problem that one will have to specifically prevent
contributors from wasting their time by contributing to the wrong
version in Launchpad. Try to communicate over a mailing list and
agree who does what in which version. That's all the advice I can
give.

I think one of the major problems here is that in Lucid-e2 some/many(?)
strings have changed only slightly (like in my previous example),
causing LP to see them as totally new. So LP does not transfer the
translation from version e1 to e2.
What happens next is that people who open version e2 in LP find a lot of
untranslated strings (415 in this case) and start translating them,
not realising that some/many of them have been translated in e1 already

The Maverick edition is based on Lucid-e2, and Natty will likely be based on Maverick. We continue to edit from the most recent version. A number of the Lucid-e2 strings changed because I moved the margin notes around. I actually moved them in Lucid-e1, but it was done just prior to publishing and after the writing freeze. I didn't push those changes to Launchpad because it would've caused the same problems you're seeing now. As far as I recall, there at no substantial changes between Lucid-e1 and Lucid-e2 -- just fixing some typos, grammatical errors, and formatting issues. We can't simply add new text and leave the existing text as is or we wouldn't have the opportunity to fix these bugs. Ideally, our translation system would handle these fuzzy matches by highlighting the differences between the two strings so that the translator can easily determine whether the new string warrants a new translation. It'd be nice if the system could also manage continuous updates. So instead of waiting for a writing freeze and having an entire book dumped in your lap, you could start translating immediately. Anything that had been previously translated would stay in the system and not be lost when the original strings are updated. Any altered strings would be show to the translator (as mentioned earlier) for review. Currently, our translation software works at the paragraph level. That is, each string is a full paragraph. The benefit of this (aside from it being easier for the LaTeX-to-pot-file converter) is that it allows the translators to rearrange sentences within the paragraph or rewrite the entire paragraph as they see fit. This means that the translated edition will sound more natural and flow better. The downside is that if anything in that paragraph changes, Launchpad tosses out the original translation and you have to start over again. We've tossed around the idea of ditching Launchpad and creating our own translation system, but I haven't had time to research the issue or think about it much yet. We'd need to sit down with translators, editors, and developers to establish what our needs are and what a translation system is actually capable of doing. The only way to do this without doing lots of development first, I think, is to use off-line tools. This also means that it'll be more difficult to contribute than if we were using Launchpad. However it would be straightforward for people with some technical experience. The tricky issue is that while Launchpad would be suited for first-time translations, it's not possible to set up things so that people will work on one sensible version in LP and no other versions. I don't think the paragraphs should be split into more strings. The benefit of being able to split/merge sentences is probably important for some languages, and at least beneficial for almost all languages. In free-flowing text it is also very difficult for the translator to guess what is being referred to by words like this or that, since that probably depends on the contents of the last sentence. Then you would need to look at the full text to translate it at all, and you might as well open the tex file and just rewrite that in a new language. Which is also a possibility of course. Natty Translations Plans III: the Ubuntu Translations Portal
Hi translators, Following the series of blog posts about the Ubuntu Translations plans for the Natty cycle, this week I’m pleased to report on the Ubuntu Translations Portal [1], and to announce its initial test deployment. The idea behind the portal is to aggregate all existing content and to be the main entry point to the translations community for new contributors, providing them answers, inspiration and excitement. For experienced translators it will be a central point for resources and news about translating Ubuntu. The main goal for this cycle is the deployment of the portal, with an official news feed and a planet-like and microblogging feeds, all nicely wrapped up in an Ubuntu-Light-based theme. Wineasio, Guitar Rig and Jack issue on Maverik, AMD 64
Hey guys! I've being using ubuntu for some years now and I've just switch to Ubuntu Studio as I'm a guitarist building a home recording studio. After trying a Guitar Rig demo I've considered buying it as it covers all my needs. I would be using GR, Ardour, Hydrogen and Jack. The only thing is stopping me is that I'm having an issue with it in Ubuntu Studio Maverik 64 bit. I have got Guitar Rig 4 running successfully on Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, however, in my 64 bit machine (UStudio 10.10) when I select the ASIO driver in GR, nothing happens (it used to crash with other versions of wineasio) and Jack can't see it. I am using the same audio interface (Edirol UA-25) in both systems and I've tried different configurations in Jack without luck. What's different though, is that in Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, wine gets installed in /usr/lib while in UStudio 64 bit, it goes to /usr/lib32. I wonder if this has something to do with the issue. GR 4 is suppose to work in 64 bit machines (windows vista and 7 only) but as I never saw an option (neither on the website or during the installation) to install the 64 bit version, I'm assuming it auto-detects it. I'm currently using wineasio 0.9 and wine 1.3 but I've tried wineasio 0.7.5, 0.8.1, and wine 1.2 before. I've got the wineasio debs from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kxstudio/files/DEBs/ and wine from the official PPA. I've read some threads on getting Guitar Rig working in linux but most of them are outdated and don't address the issue I'm having. I really need to get it running on the AMD64 machine as it was bought for handling this task (music and video production). I've have considered switching to Ubuntu Studio 32 bit if I don't get this sort it out, but I don't want to loose computer power by doing it. Any idea, suggestion or advice would be very much appreciated :) Thanks! You're asking for help on a complicated steam machine and we don't know
if each piece works independently, let alone the assembly. To help you
we need more background on your setup:
0. Which kernel are you using? (use uname -r)
1. Does JACK start successfully? (can it run without interruption?)
2. Do native JACK apps work? (can you work on Ardour, Rakarrack, etc.)
3. *Does REAPER work?* (it should, REAPER supports WINE admirably). To
me, having confirmation of this last point would be very meaningful
since it would mean we are sure you have a sane wineasio setup. We'll
see about GR afterwards.
Finally, have you considered using native apps? I don't know your use
case but as a guitarist you should at least have a look at {Rakarrack,
Sooperlooper, JACK Timemachine, Calf plugins (and many others)}. WINE
apps are never a good idea; even if you get GR running tomorrow, you
_will_ end up unhappy (to be polite) someday. Which killer feature are
you missing?

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my first question here on the mailing list :) I am wondering if anyone has found a decent parametric equalizer plugin for using with ardour or another program. Unless I missed something, this is where Ardour (LADSPA really) falls short. Jamin is the best thing that I've found, and it's not ideal - an external, really only works for eq'ing the mix. Hmm, I was searching for the same when I made my first steps with ardour ... I always use the ardour plugins headless (without a fancy GUI) just the parameter sliders. But after getting used to it over time, I must say that I don´t miss those fancy plugin GUIs any more. It helps me more to listen to the changes that occur when I slide the parameters. Anyway, I have seen screenshots of ardour on the web, showing plugins with those fancy GUIs. Hello! Linuxdsp (www.linuxdsp.co.uk) has a good graphical EQ, and costs £10. The Calf-git plugins also contains a good parametric eq with graphical representation of which I'm very satisfied. I would recommend getting it from some PPA (I think FalkXT has its) which a recently compiled git-build. Otherwise you wont get the same results. Both are LV2 plugins. Hi Miranda My go-to EQ for absolutely everything these days is EQ10Q. It's LV2 though, not LADSPA. Ten bands of EQ, with high and low shelves, HP, LP, parametric and notch. It shows the shape of the adjustments as well. For me, it was worth compiling Ardour myself with LV2 support just for this EQ. I've tried the native apps you mention. Calf plugins have a nice
modulation tools that I'll be using, Scooperlooper will come in handy
indeed and as for Rakarrack, although it seems promising, lacks of a
good amp and overdrive/distortion emulator, and this functionality is
critical for the work I intent to do. The ideal thing would be using my
real amp and stomp boxes, but I live in a small place and I know I will
disturb the neighbours.
I would love to be using pure libre/open source software and hope one
day Rakarrack becomes a great emulator, but in the mean time, Guitar Rig
is the only one that gets close (and works in linux)to the tone of my
real set-up. If anybody else know of any other open source emulator I
can try please let me know.
Anyway, I apologize for not providing further details. Here they are:
0. Kernel: 2.6.35-23-generic
1. Jack starts and run without interruptions (I've being testing it for
some days)
2. All native apps I've tried work smoothly (Ardour, Rakarrack, calf
plugin, Jack rack, Hydrogen, etc )
3. Never heard of Reaper. Just went to the website and installed the 32
bit version (tried 64 bit version but didn't work). In the Audio
device window I chose ASIO as my Audio device and then Wine ASIO
Driver in the next drop box. The drop boxes Enable input and Output
range are empty and when pressing the button ASIO Configuration...
nothing happens.
When done, I got an error window: Error initializing ASIO driver :(
I have downgraded Wine to the default version (1.2) to narrow down the
possibilities and still using wineasio-beta_0.9.0~beta0_64bit.deb found
here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kxstudio/files/DEBs/. Reaper was
installed over Wine 1.2.
BTW, to installed wineasio, I extracted the DEB file and copy
wineasio.dll to /lib32/wine/. then I run regsvr32 wineasio.dll
sucessfully and finally installed Reaper. Did it this way because I read
in a forum that the DEB was compiled using Ubuntu lucid not maverik, so
this method was suggested.

When done, I got an error window: Error initializing ASIO driver :( I have downgraded Wine to the default version (1.2) to narrow down the possibilities and still using wineasio-beta_0.9.0~beta0_64bit.debhttp://sourceforge.net/projects/kxstudio/files/DEBs/wineasio-beta_0.9.0%7Ebeta0_64bit.deb/downloadfound here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kxstudio/files/DEBs/. Reaper was installed over Wine 1.2. BTW, to installed wineasio, I extracted the DEB file and copy wineasio.dll to /lib32/wine/. then I run regsvr32 wineasio.dll sucessfully and finally installed Reaper. Did it this way because I read in a forum that the DEB was compiled using Ubuntu lucid not maverik, so this method was suggested. I'll try to get into the IRC channel. Peguei o bonde andando, mas colocar 1 HD mais lento ou com desgaste e com performance mais baixa diminui toda a performance do seu sistema, o computador nivela por baixo todo a perfomance do seu hardware. Geninho, Para ser franco, nas máquinas da patroa e filhos uso um HDs SATA para o sistema principal (Ubuntu) com dados em partição separada e, para o Windows (que eles usam alternadamente), um HD IDE de baixa capacidade, habitualmente recuperado. A única máquina que apresenta realmente problemas com o HD IDE é a do filhote mas quando ele está usando o Windows. Quando ele utiliza o Ubuntu pelo SATA, nenhuma redução de desempenho, salvo a mencionada sobre transferência de arquivos entre os HDs. Acredito que possa ser o gerenciamento das portas de acordo com os chipsets de controle de cada mother. Hoje não opero muito com suporte, e alguma coisa pode ter mudado, mas não creio que o chipset consiga distinguir isso tão bem, na verdade o sistema nivela por baixo para evitar gargalos, afinal se temos um desk com 2 HD´s, um é rápido e outro lento, no funcionamento normal do sistema haveria um gargalo que poderia causar perda de dados ou danos em arquivos pois a transferência em um é rápida (não somente entre HD´s, mas entre HD e outros periféricos) e no outro lenta, imagina o rolo que seria esse gerenciamento no intercâmbio com as memórias? Dados poderiam ficar perdidos aguardando o final da transferência do HD lento o que poderia causar arquivos corrompidos. É claro que se o sistema operacional ficar instalado no HD lento a perda de performance é maior, porém, mesmo utilizando o HD lento para hotbackup o sistema como um todo sofre certa interferência na performance. Eu mesmo, mantenho um desk com um HD de alta performance de apenas 80Gb, ainda o utilizo pois é muito rápido e comprar um HD maior nas mesmas condições é muito caro e utilizar os comuns, com performance padrão irei perder desempenho, por isso me viro com somente 80Gb. P.S.: no caso de HD externo o funcionamento é diferente. Flw. Vou verificar isso. Meu notebook é um Kennex e por si só já esquenta muito. Com relação ao sistema de arrefecimento,acredito que não tenha nenhum tipo de controle por parte do OS. Geralmente os notebooks convencionais possuem o sistema de arrefecimento comum que não tem interação com o OS, somente com a BIOS (motherboard) e que seria bom vc verificar a configuração de quantos RPM está, talvez haja um limite e o ideal é deixar sem limite, deixando somente a BIOS controlar a velocidade. Tenho um notebook Philco e também esquenta muito, e o pior é que o meu é Intel, que tem menos tolerância a calor, a AMD suporta melhor. Qualquer coisa estamos aí. Flw. Pessoal, Instalei o Edubuntu para minha filha usar (jogos educativos, etc) e para evitar vírus, essas coisas Daí, instalei a versão 10.10. Com Kernel Linux (final)35.22 - Fiz a atualização geral +- 300 megas. Daí Desinstalei umas coisas via Synaptic. E como atualizou o kernel Linux para o final 35.24 Desinstalei o antigo. Fiz algumas desinstalações e atualizações... Drivers impressora Brother, BrOffice Agora... NÃO mostra a barra do painel abaixo. (aquela barra que fica acima, coloquei como inferior), fica somente a Área de Trabalho. Não aparece a barra do reloginho, ícones? O que fazer?? Como entrar no synaptic (Se for o caso) e instalar o que falta. Como atualizar/usar o DVD para voltar ao normal. Será que vou ter que instalar tudo de novo??? A. You'll be surprised of how blurry they are. At no point is any operating system or even any specific application named. In my short experience with schools, teachers use the applications that are available and the books/manuals that are at their disposition. The biggest problems are (imo): - the ICT-staff qualified to deploy a (pretty well secured) network under linux aren't that thick (and they often get paid much better in a different job) - the interaction with foreign systems (read: microsoft-empire) like smartphones (mostly calendar), office-grade copy-printer-scanners, etc... is much easier on a MS system. Isn't it ironic that even an Android (=linux) phone gets better results connecting to Outlook (Windows only) than to Thunderbird (Linux or whatever)? - the false claim of openoffice compatibility. It's utterly frustrating if a student tries running an Ooo.org Impress presentation under MS Powerpoint... not even to mention the opposite. I've seen kids cry over this. - all the easy out-of-the-box templates, clipart, fonts, etc... Okay, so I probably told you all some very old news here... and sorry, but I'm not in the spot to offer solutions. I think Ubuntu is doing a great job working on these issues, but we're not there yet. I think it would be a good thing if Ubuntu... - ... really worked out some professional marketing towards schools. (I'm talking salesmen here, not some advertisement in a magazine), ... - ... figured out a way to get Ubuntu certification accessible to school personnel, ... - ... offer a local support approach, suitable for a school. hey guys, I just had an answer about this question. Apparently there was a misunderstanding. ATM the use of microsoft does NOT stand in the curriculum! I'm sorry for the inconvenience. But, this subject wasn't totally fiction.. The links jimbauwens submitted are from the years 04 05 and 06. Around that same period (?maybe? even as a result of it) his school (GroupT) started with a project involving linux. (I studied there last year but engineering instead of teaching) To date there are still a lot of computers in that school that have an ubuntu (or derivate) OS. In the engineering classes it's only used for 1 program during the electronic lessons. Apparently the teachers don't really use it ever. My friend asked about this and he was given this answer: Those were used in the past, but since we had to many compatibility problems we don't really use them anymore. Besides children should learn how to work with windows, chances they will ever use linux in their career are to slim. It wouldn't give them any advantage (he didn't said it literally, but that was the message) Further asking around showed him that not many students liked the idea of learning another OS, they didn't saw the advantage. His teacher also said him that he wasn't the only one that had that opinion. When he asked about the official opinion of the school, he was told that it still encourages people to learn how to use linux. What I remember of GroupT is that it really depended which teacher you had when it comes to stuff like this. Our group was encouraged to use prezi as an alternative to powerpoint, some other groups (other docent) were told not to use prezi because of: the inability of the program to have a standard format. Overheads, slides, powerpoints and others use different 'slides' to provide overview (as prezi only uses 1 big slide, with almost infinite zooming features, it would confuse people that watch your presentation) So in short we officially don't need to be afraid of schools being unable to teach ubuntu. But when we look deeper it seems like we've got ourself in a big chicken/egg story. no demand of ubuntu skills not learning new people no company's that install it no demand of ubuntu skills I want to apologize for this, I took his words for granted, I should have checked it first. Lastly I want to say that this might be worse then what I believed first. Convincing a minister would have been hard, but doable. Convincing teachers and students will be harder as we have to show them 1 by 1.. William, Fijn om te horen dat je kan komen, het maakt niet uit wanneer of hoe lang een ubuntu-promotor aanwezig is. Het belangrijkste is dat de stand goed bezet is gedurende het hele evenement, iedereen kiest zelf wanneer ze kunnen komen en hoe lang ze blijven. Tot nu toe zijn we met 4 promotors, dus ga ik binnenkort een agenda opstarten om te zien wanneer wie en hoe lang hij/zij gaat komen. Bill Grid computing has a very large base of implementations (science, medicine, education) but its not a useful model for everything. That said, have a look at MIT's StarCluster projecthttp://web.mit.edu/stardev/cluster/. It runs on Amazon EC2, uses Sun Grid Engine (SGE) and Ubuntu AMI's and I believe its mostly written in python. They've layering a grid (SGE) architecture on top of AWS's EC2 which makes for some very interesting possibilities in itself. I believe it should be able to run on Canonical's UEC also give a few minor changes in the main config file to point to the UEC instead of EC2. Игнорировать невозможность монтирования диска
Здравствуйте, уважаемые подписчики. Как объяснить шибко умной Убунте, что мне пофиг, какие там диски не смонтировались. Главное, чтобы система загрузилась. И вообще, начиная с 10.04 система останавливает загрузка по любому поводу, не смогли поднять ppp-стоп, не смогли смонтировать диск-стоп. Как это всё поотрубать??
