Re: [Ubuntu-ch] Icons on ubuntu-ch.org
Hi all. Gregor has designed a nice icon set and I had the idea of using some of them on the ubuntu-ch.org wiki page: http://www.froeh.li/ubuntu/loco/pictogramme.png I thought about a icon size of 32x32px and placement within the paragraphs. This could make the site look a bit fresher and perhaps even easier to use. What do you think? Greets Marcus Yesss! [ubuntu-in] Tata Photon on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
Hi, I installed Natty on a friend's laptop. I will try to write a separate email about little issues faced with the unity desktop shell, but a big issue faced is that I cannot seem to get Tata Photon+ to connect to the internet. I plug in the device and Network Manager recognizes a new CDMA Mobile Broadband device. I click on it and configure the provider (India - Tata Photon Plus). After this, network manager shows the state where it is trying to connect to the network, and remains in that state, without successfully connecting. usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data are both installed. This seems to be a regression as the Photon has worked for me on 10.10 without needing to do anything, really. I would be highly grateful if someone has dealt with this and has any ideas, or lets me know what debugging information I can provide to try and sort this out. Recoll I will test. DocFetcher and Pinot are two others which are mentioned in the referenced article. I will have a look at those. If anyone else has experience with these search tools and Indic fonts, please tell us about them. Doesn't the inbuilt search tool in GNOME suffice? I gave it a try and it is able to detect hindi words in a plain text file. You are right-- I just tested it again and it seems to be working. I'll have to try using it more to make sure it is accurate. But there are still some important missing elements in this search tool: 1. It does not pre-index, and so takes time. 2. It does not show you the sentence in which it found the word. 3. Now with further testing, it seems to be missing more complex words when I search on them. I will test this more to confirm. Thank you though for pointing this out. I will give a more detailed report on this search tool after testing it more. Writing in to report that I've installed and tested the app called Recoll, fairly extensively. I think it is even better than Beagle. It does pre-indexing, searches perfectly, shows you the sentence in which it found the word, and offers to open a preview window in which all the places in that document where it found the word, will be highlighted. It is the most advanced search tool I've used so far. Google desktop cannot compare, rather it is quite useless for my purposes, as it cannot search documents using Indic Fonts. Conclusion: Recoll is a great desktop search tool, and especially the more so as it searches Indic Fonts perfectly. Re: [ubuntu-in] Tata Photon on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
Hi Sanjay, Am copy pasting from an older list mail. There is a rider, - this is based on older versions of Ubuntu, while it should work there may be a solution like a patched Network Manager, if you scan your list mails for this request for help with Ubuntu (connecting to Huawei EC152) you will find thw suggestion to patch the required network manager applet. The reason i likw wvdial (the process) is that is shows what is happening and once this works then usually (many) devices can be figured out till the more GUI friendly apps catch up. The detailed instructions / process is below your query. On Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 6:29 PM, Sanjay Bhangar sanjaybhan...@gmail.com wrote: It would be highly appreciated if you can help me with some pointers of what exactly to 'try' in wvdial / gnome-ppp. I have vague memories of hacking on wvdial and gnome-ppp years ago and afraid those memories are fuzzy and not such good memories :( - for the past year or so, touch-wood, I have just plugged in a Photon and it has worked with clicking a few buttons on the GUI, so I'm really completely out of touch with debugging these things. Any specific tips / links to articles would be appreciated. usually the problem with USB devices is that they don't get recognized by Ubuntu (linux) and one needs to wait tlll the Ubuntu device database gets updated to to recognize the device and correlate it to a particular port and once that happens the next step is for Ubuntu to load the driver (the drivers are usually built onto the device) and then it gets to work. The process i normally follow for a new device is 1. plug in the device and in a command line run dmesg -$ dmesg - c if the device is recognized it will usually have an output (last few lines) some like gsm device recognised and attached to ttyusb0 or ttyusb1 etc if this happens your device should work if it does not then one has to find out the device product id and vendor id for this run (in a terminal) lsusb see if you can identify the device - some like Bus 004 Device 004: ID 19d2:fffe ONDA Communication S.p.A. ** if you can identify the device then just get that data but running lsusb -v - s bus number leave out the when typing the bus number (some thing like 001 or 004 etc) ** if not then run lsusb -v which will give the details of all usb devices then browse through the entire list and find what is relevant to your data card. mine looks something like this Bus 004 Device 004: ID 19d2:fffe ONDA Communication S.p.A. Device Descriptor: snipped idVendor 0x19d2 ONDA Communication S.p.A. idProduct 0xfffe bcdDevice 0.00 iManufacturer 1 ZTE, Incorporated iProduct 2 ZTE CDMA Tech iSerial 0 here the vendor and product id is given note this detail down ** If the device is not recognized at all then some of the technical heavies will need to weigh in. ** However if you can get the vendor and product id the next stage is to install wvdial sudo apt-get install wvdial If no internet works on your machine - then you can ask some one to download then and provide you the necessary file (like via apton or something) ** The next few steps are to try and load the driver (make sure the device is plugged in) run $ sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0xfffd replace the vendor and product id with your specific ones you could also mknod's (it might already be there but making it again won't do anything atleast the first time) -$ mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0 -$ mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1 ** after all this run dmesg -c and see if your device is attached (as in the attached to ttysub0 etc) if this is the case all you need now to make it connect to the internet for this we will use wvdial (you can later on figure out gnome-ppp etc) but wvdial is simple and effective and a sureshot way to know your device works (till and Ubuntu (linux) version gets it to work directly run sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf this will open a file called wvdial.conf for editing. It may already have some contents - copy that over with the following lines ** [Modem0] Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0 Baud = 230400 SetVolume = 0 Dial Command = ATDT Init1 = ATZ FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS) Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 C1 D2 +FCLASS=0 Modem Type = Analog Modem New PPPD = yes Idle Seconds = 90 Auto Reconnect = off [Dialer any name] Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0 Phone = #777 Stupid Mode = 1 Username = username Password = password ** replace the words / numbers in with your specific details ** once this is done open a terminal and type sudo wvdial any name this should show up some details about connecting and the an ip address and some dns address will show up which means the internet is connected to disconnect press control c in the terminal. If this works - then next time all you need to do is make a launcher and that should be a one click button to start your internet however - if there is a problem of your

[Ubuntu-QC] Java Icedtea v.6b21.1 versus OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime v.6.b22
Greffon Java Icedtea (6b21.1 ...) icedtea6-plugin IcedTeaPlugin is a web browser plugin to execute Java applets, supporting LiveConnect/JavaScript. It is targeted for xulrunner-1.9 and compatible browsers that support the NPAPI. OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime (6.b22 ...) openjdk-6-jre Full Java runtime environment - needed for executing Java GUI and Webstart programs. Using Hotspot JIT. The packages are built using the IcedTea build support and patches from the IcedTea project. J'utilise Kubuntu 11.04. Are existing XP license holders not able to have their PCs repaired and continue using their XP License? That's rubbish!! It was hard to get hold of XP in a MS-blessed way last time I was interested a year or so ago, I don't imagine it's got easier. Those businesses are supposed to have upgraded by now. The EOL for XP was widely publicised long before it happened, and it was then extended, and even then you could still buy it for a bit. I imagine it's still possible to get hold of, but perhaps not with MS's blessing. As said, I'd expect it to have just worked - replace the board and boot (perhaps a bit of hoop-jumping), but I don't know if this shop's got some deal with MS going on whereby they agree to actually abide by the licenses. So is Vista still sold then? I wonder if they told him they were going to put it on? Well, if you've a license in stock you're still allowed to sell it, but MS are definitely less concerned about people selling Vista licenses when they should be selling 7 ones than they are about XP. No, the automatic online activation may not work (due to the hardware changes) but if you phone the Microsoft activation line and explain the situation they will let it through as they're not stupid - they know that people will have blown motherboards etc. and need to replace them. Much as some of the most rabid Microsoft haters might try to make it out, Microsoft are not deliberately trying to make life difficult for people. They are just trying to protect their investment against pirates and, in all my dealings with them, are perfectly reasonable if you explain the situation to them. Personally in this situation I would phone the PC shop and ask them to remove Vista and re-install the original version of XP. If they argue that they will not do this, then do it yourself - you probably have CDs that came with the PC, but if not it should be relatively easy to borrow one and do it yourself (assuming the licence key is still attached to the machine and they haven't airblasted that off or something) quite legitimately. By the way, the official line with regard to sales of Windows XP and Vista is that both are now past their sell by date, as XP officially end of retail sales was June 30th 2008, and Vista October 22nd 2010. Which makes me wonder why, if this PC shop wanted to move your dad forward, they didn't just go for Windows 7 which has been proven to be SIGNIFICANTLY faster than Vista (and in some cases XP) on lower specification machines. In the olden days Windows could be more fussy about hardware changes, such as changing from one motherboard to another. I guess this still can be the case if you're using the built in Windows disk drivers. I found that for instance going from a Pentium 4 to a Pentium 2 didn't work. A place I used to work at used to do images of Windows for deployment, they found that creating the images on newer hardware wouldn't work on older hardware, in the end we had to use the oldest hardware we had such as a P2 and install what we wanted, and then run Sysprep with the hardware drivers available for newer disk controller, otherwise the machines wouldn't boot. I gather in Vista and Windows 7 things have improved greatly and if the machine can't boot you have the option of loading a gui recovery mode and adding drivers that way. Ok. The BIOS version is needed too, if known board revisions instead of chip sets only. A description what does work and what not would be important, but should be marked as subjective. I would recommend that we open a Wiki at http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/start and add a link on the Ubuntu Studio site. At the moment I don't have time to do this. [Ubuntu-BR] problema com * character encoding* e ativacao ultraedit **trial**
* uex== UltraEdit is a text, hex, and programming language editor.* Com ele vi os 3 danadinhos e corrigi meus scripts. [Ubuntu-BR] [OT] Ubuntu-Server + Squid + Nagios
Pessoal, bom dia! Solução Instalar as dependencias necessárias com o apt-get. Use of uninitialized value in sprintf at /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1/Nagios/Plugin/Performance.pm line 68.
* uex== UltraEdit is a text, hex, and programming language editor.* Com ele vi os 3 danadinhos e corrigi meus scripts. Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [OT] Ubuntu-Server + Squid + Nagios
Solução Instalar as dependencias necessárias com o apt-get. Use of uninitialized value in sprintf at /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1/Nagios/Plugin/Performance.pm line 68.
[Bug 800656] [NEW] Update Manager can not proceed if there is a lock on /etc
Public bug reported: Somehow, there was a bzr lock on /etc when Update Manager did its daily update of my Natty machine today.
