Re: [Ubuntu-ch] Icons on ubuntu-ch.org

2011-06-22 Thread Lucas.Betschart
Hi all.

Gregor has designed a nice icon set and I had the idea of using some of them
on the ubuntu-ch.org wiki page:

http://www.froeh.li/ubuntu/loco/pictogramme.png

I thought about a icon size of 32x32px and placement within the paragraphs.

This could make the site look a bit fresher and perhaps even easier to use.

What do you think?

Yesss!

[ubuntu-in] Tata Photon on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty

2011-06-22 Thread Sanjay Bhangar
Hi,

I installed Natty on a friend's laptop. I will try to write a separate
email about little issues faced with the unity desktop shell, but a
big issue faced is that I cannot seem to get Tata Photon+ to connect
to the internet.

I plug in the device and Network Manager recognizes a new CDMA Mobile
Broadband device. I click on it and configure the provider (India -
Tata Photon Plus). After this, network manager shows the state where
it is trying to connect to the network, and remains in that state,
without successfully connecting. usb-modeswitch and
usb-modeswitch-data are both installed.

This seems to be a regression as the Photon has worked for me on 10.10
without needing to do anything, really.

I would be highly grateful if someone has dealt with this and has any
ideas, or lets me know what debugging information I can provide to try
and sort this out.

Thanks,
Sanjay

You are right-- I just tested it again and it seems to be working. I'll
have to try using it more to make sure it is accurate. But there are
still some important missing elements in this search tool:

 1. It does not pre-index, and so takes time.
 2. It does not show you the sentence in which it found the word.
 3. Now with further testing, it seems to be missing more complex words
when I search on them. I will test this more to confirm.

Thank you though for pointing this out. I will give a more detailed
report on this search tool after testing it more.

Writing in to report that I've installed and tested the app called
Recoll, fairly extensively. I think it is even better than Beagle. It
does pre-indexing, searches perfectly, shows you the sentence in which
it found the word, and offers to open a preview window in which all the
places in that document where it found the word, will be highlighted. It
is the most advanced search tool I've used so far. Google desktop cannot
compare, rather it is quite useless for my purposes, as it cannot search
documents using Indic Fonts.

Conclusion: Recoll is a great desktop search tool, and especially the
more so as it searches Indic Fonts perfectly.

2011-06-22 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi Sanjay,

Am copy pasting from an older list mail.

There is a rider, - this is based on older versions of Ubuntu, while
it should work there may be a solution like a patched Network Manager,
if you scan your list mails for this request for help with Ubuntu
(connecting to Huawei EC152) you will find thw suggestion to patch
the required network manager applet.

The reason i likw wvdial (the process) is that is shows what is
happening and once this works then usually (many) devices can be
figured out till the more GUI friendly apps catch up. The detailed
instructions / process is below your query.

On Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 6:29 PM, Sanjay Bhangar sanjaybhan...@gmail.com wrote:

usually the problem with USB devices is that they don't get recognized
by Ubuntu (linux) and one needs to wait tlll the Ubuntu device
database gets updated to to recognize the device
and correlate it to a particular port and once that happens the next
step is for Ubuntu to load the driver (the drivers are usually built
onto the device) and then it gets to work.

The process i normally follow for a new device is
1. plug in the device and in a command line run dmesg
-$ dmesg  - c

if the device is recognized it will usually have an output (last few
lines) some like gsm device recognised and attached to ttyusb0 or
ttyusb1 etc

if this happens your device should work

if it does not then one has to find out the device product  id and vendor id

for this
run (in a terminal)
lsusb

see if you can identify the device -
some like
Bus 004 Device 004: ID 19d2:fffe ONDA Communication S.p.A.

**
if you can identify the device then just get that data but running
lsusb -v - s bus number

leave out the when typing the bus number (some thing like 001 or 004 etc)

**
if not then run lsusb -v  which will give the details of all usb devices

then browse through the entire list and find what is relevant to your data card.

mine looks something like this
Bus 004 Device 004: ID 19d2:fffe ONDA Communication S.p.A.
Device Descriptor:
 snipped
  idVendor   0x19d2 ONDA Communication S.p.A.
  idProduct  0xfffe
  bcdDevice    0.00
  iManufacturer   1 ZTE, Incorporated
  iProduct    2 ZTE CDMA Tech
  iSerial 0

here the vendor and product id is given note this detail down

**
If the device is not recognized at all then some of the technical
heavies will need to weigh in.

**
However if you can get the vendor and product id the next stage is to
install wvdial

sudo apt-get install wvdial

If no internet works on your machine - then you can ask some one to
download then and provide you the necessary file (like via apton or
something)

**
The next few steps are to try and load the driver (make sure the
device is plugged in)

run
$ sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0xfffd

replace the vendor and product id with your specific ones

you could also  mknod's (it might already be there but making it again
won't do anything atleast the first time)

-$ mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
-$ mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

**
after all this run dmesg -c and see if your device is attached (as in
the attached to ttysub0 etc)

if this is the case all you need now to make it connect to the internet

for this we will use wvdial (you can later on figure out gnome-ppp
etc) but wvdial is simple and effective and a sureshot way to know
your device works (till and Ubuntu (linux) version gets it to work
directly

run sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

this will open a file called wvdial.conf for editing. It may already
have some contents - copy that over with the following lines

**
[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 230400
SetVolume = 0
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS)
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 C1 D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
New PPPD = yes
Idle Seconds = 90
Auto Reconnect = off

[Dialer any name]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Phone = #777
Stupid Mode = 1
Username = username
Password = password

**
replace the words / numbers in with your specific details

**
once this is done

open a terminal and type

sudo wvdial any name

this should show up some details about connecting and the an ip
address and some dns address will show up which means the internet is
connected

to disconnect press control c in the terminal.

If this works - then next time all you need to do is make a launcher
and that should be a one click button to start your internet

however - if there is a problem of your

   http://edge.launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-stable

  Mathieu,

[Ubuntu-QC] Java Icedtea v.6b21.1 versus OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime v.6.b22

2011-06-22 Thread Gérard Talbot
Bonjour,

Greffon Java Icedtea (6b21.1 ...)
icedtea6-plugin

IcedTeaPlugin is a web browser plugin to execute Java applets, supporting
LiveConnect/JavaScript. It is targeted for xulrunner-1.9 and compatible
browsers that support the NPAPI.

OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime (6.b22 ...)
openjdk-6-jre

Full Java runtime environment - needed for executing Java GUI and Webstart
programs. Using Hotspot JIT.
The packages are built using the IcedTea build support and patches
from the IcedTea project.

OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime.

J'utilise Kubuntu 11.04.

You sure about that?

I always believed that even an OEM licence was tied to the machine, but if
you had to replace a motherboard you could still re-install legally. The
automatic activation facilities in XP might tell you too many aspects of
the machine has changed, but a call to Microsoft can resolve that.

Anyway, I wouldn't be inclined to re-install because I changed a motherboard
anyway. I may have to install new graphics/sound drivers etc. after
changing the mobo (if they were using onboard) but I don't see why a
re-install would be necessary.

It's not a question of not being sold (it isn't), but as many companies

It was hard to get hold of XP in a MS-blessed way last time I was
interested a year or so ago, I don't imagine it's got easier.

Those businesses are supposed to have upgraded by now. The EOL for XP
was widely publicised long before it happened, and it was then extended,
and even then you could still buy it for a bit. I imagine it's still
possible to get hold of, but perhaps not with MS's blessing.

As said, I'd expect it to have just worked - replace the board and boot
(perhaps a bit of hoop-jumping), but I don't know if this shop's got
some deal with MS going on whereby they agree to actually abide by the
licenses.

Well, if you've a license in stock you're still allowed to sell it, but
MS are definitely less concerned about people selling Vista licenses
when they should be selling 7 ones than they are about XP.

No, the automatic online activation may not work (due to the hardware
changes) but if you phone the Microsoft activation line and explain the
situation they will let it through as they're not stupid - they know that
people will have blown motherboards etc. and need to replace them.

Much as some of the most rabid Microsoft haters might try to make it out,
Microsoft are not deliberately trying to make life difficult for people.
They are just trying to protect their investment against pirates and, in all
my dealings with them, are perfectly reasonable if you explain the situation
to them.

Personally in this situation I would phone the PC shop and ask them to
remove Vista and re-install the original version of XP. If they argue that
they will not do this, then do it yourself - you probably have CDs that came
with the PC, but if not it should be relatively easy to borrow one and do it
yourself (assuming the licence key is still attached to the machine and they
haven't airblasted that off or something) quite legitimately.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Dad's Computer - for want of a better subject

2011-06-22 Thread Sean Miller
By the way, the official line with regard to sales of Windows XP and Vista
is that both are now past their sell by date, as XP officially end of
retail sales was June 30th 2008, and Vista October 22nd 2010.

Which makes me wonder why, if this PC shop wanted to move your dad
forward, they didn't just go for Windows 7 which has been proven to be

But, in reality, XP is far from dead or unavailable

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu LoCo Meeting

2011-06-22 Thread Paul Mellors
Hello All

Last night I attended the LocO meeting for re-approving LoCo teams,
you can read a brief summary about it on my blog

http://paulmellors.blogspot.com/2011/06/loco-council-meeting.html

It was rather interesting to see the process, especially seeing as our
UK team is up for re-approval is soon. Thanks for the heads up Alan

2011-06-22 Thread Steve Fisher
The new hardware may not be compatible with XP, as long as the shop
authenticated the Vista install, I wouldn't make a big issue about it. Just
be prepared for lots of questions from your Dad, everything moved or was
given a different name in Vista and the UAC is a royal PITA :)

Well his computer then crashed again. He took it to the local shop (a small

motherboard. They offered to rebuild the computer with some spares from
 another computer.

Anyway, when it returned, it had Vista on it! I am just wondering the
 following:

 1. Why on Earth did they choose to put Vista on there??

 2. If the machine was struggling with XP, why put something more demanding
on there?? (and if they argue the new bits are more powerful, then why then
cripple them again with something more demanding?)

 3. Wouldn't he have needed to buy a new license for Vista or would his
existing XP license cover him (I somehow doubt it)?

 4. If they charge him for a license, they certainly didn't ask him if he
 wanted Vista!

I find this amazing. Suddenly my opinion of these guys has dropped. Shame
as they are nice and helpful by the sounds of it, coming out to his house to
 help.

I think it may just be easier for companies like that to do a complete
re-install rather than diagnose the actual problem and blame it on dodgy
hardware, as for the Vista install, if they did actually take the parts from
another PC perhaps they switched the license over and scrapped the other PC
- perhaps they thought they were doing him a favour by giving him a more up
to date OS. I'd certainly check that the license is valid with someone (Not
sure who, Microsoft?) as there may be a load of computers in your area all
running the same Vista install - they won't be able to get licences for free

Actually it is easy to get round the Vista activation with a BIOS

Doesn't make it legal though.

My other thought was that maybe they are a registered Microsoft

Perhaps because a new board supposedly means a new install of
Windows and you're not supposed to be using XP licenses any more.
Perhaps they're also tired of supporting an OS that's way past
end-of-life.

You sure about that?

I always believed that even an OEM licence was tied to the machine,
but if you had to replace a motherboard you could still re-install
legally. The automatic activation facilities in XP might tell you
too many aspects of the machine has changed, but a call to Microsoft
can resolve that.

This is a blog post about what Microsoft class as the machine nowadays...

4.1 We grant you a nonexclusive right to distribute an individual
software license only with a fully assembled computer system. A fully
assembled computer system means a computer system consisting of at
least a central processing unit, a motherboard, a hard drive, a power
supply, and a case.

You will notice the loophole that people have been exploiting (the
former language which stated that an OEM desktop Operating System
license could be sold with non-peripheral hardware,) is no longer in
place. It is now very simple and straightforward: an OEM license must be
sold only with a fully assembled computer system. Loophole closed.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mssmallbiz/archive/2005/09/07/461950.aspx

Seems pretty strict, last I heard it was tied to the motherboard and case.

Anyway, I wouldn't be inclined to re-install because I changed a
motherboard anyway. I may have to install new graphics/sound drivers
etc. after changing the mobo (if they were using onboard) but I don't
see why a re-install would be necessary.

In the olden days Windows could be more fussy about hardware changes,
such as changing from one motherboard to another. I guess this still
can be the case if you're using the built in Windows disk drivers. I
found that for instance going from a Pentium 4 to a Pentium 2 didn't
work. A place I used to work at used to do images of Windows for
deployment, they found that creating the images on newer hardware
wouldn't work on older hardware, in the end we had to use the oldest
hardware we had such as a P2 and install what we wanted, and then run
Sysprep with the hardware drivers available for newer disk controller,
otherwise the machines wouldn't boot.

I gather in Vista and Windows 7 things have improved greatly and if the
machine can't boot you have the option of loading a gui recovery mode
and adding drivers that way.

Ok.

The BIOS version is needed too, if known board revisions instead of chip
sets only.

A description what does work and what not would be important, but should
be marked as subjective.

I would recommend that we open a Wiki at
http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/start and add a link on the Ubuntu
Studio site.

At the moment I don't have time to do this.

There should be one site for video and audio and IMO linuxaudio.org is
the best choice.

 Licio,

php5-cli php5-pgsql php5-xdebug postgresql-8.3
2) Após a instalação executo o comando:

a2enmod rewrite

 3) Edito o arquivo /etc/apache2/sites-available/default, ou o
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default (os 2 são o mesmo), e dentro do
bloco:

Directory /var/www/

 Altero o atributo

AllowOverride None

 Para

AllowOverride All

 4) Reinicio o apache através do comando:

sudo service apache2 restart

[Ubuntu-BR] [OT] Ubuntu-Server + Squid + Nagios

2011-06-22 Thread Silva, Thiago Alexandre Vitorino Da
Pessoal, bom dia!

Instalar as dependencias necessárias com o apt-get. Por algum motivo, a
instalação pelo CPAN não funfa .
# apt-get install libnagios-plugin-perl

O check_squid utiliza o binário squidclient para fazer as leituras necessárias,
portanto intale-o:

# apt-get install squidclient

sh: /usr/sbin/squidclient: not found
SQUID CRITICAL - squidclient error

Solução
---

/usr/bin/squidclient
Basta definir o parâmetro -s no comando

# ./check_squid -H ip.da.interface -p porta -s /usr/sbin/squidclient

Problema 3 - Erro script Perl
--

Use of uninitialized value in sprintf at
/usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1/Nagios/Plugin/Performance.pm line 68.

Solução
---

# vim /etc/squid3/squid.conf

do plugin, utilize o seguinte comando:
# squidclient -h ip.da.inter.face -p porta mgr:info

O squidlclient deve retornar diversas informações relacionados ao cache.

** Dica: Utilize # ./check_squid --help e o plugin mostrará os parâmetros
que podem ser utilizados com ele. Tem várias opções muito interessantes!!

Bom, é isso!!

Abraços!

Regards / Atenciosamente,

enter, pediu a senha, e começou a instalar. Detalhe, o download prosseguiu a
novamente o terminal:

sudo apt-get install -f

E correu tudo bem!

permitido, eXecutar (entrar no diretório), leR e escrever (Write) (incluindo
apagar)

chown user:group /path/to/directory

sudo chown andre:andre /home/andre/Desktop

propriedades do diretório/pasta.

UTF-8.

***{
Faca o que eu digo mas nao faca o que eu faco:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd317752.aspx

Note New Windows applications should use Unicode to avoid the
inconsistencies of varied code pages and for ease of localization.

No windows o UTF-8 eh identificado por CP65001
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd317756
}***

Could you try booting the system with 'apparmor=0' in the boot arguments? If
it works then, then we know apparmor is somehow still causing this.

[Bug 800597] [NEW] Latest postfix update breaks hash-based aliases.db (potentially other .db files too?)

2011-06-22 Thread d1zzyg
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS
Package: 2.5.1-2ubuntu1.4

Errors were reported during the update:
postfix/postfix-script: fatal: the Postfix mail system is already running
[fail]
invoke-rc.d: initscript postfix, action restart failed.
  dpkg: error processing postfix (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of postfix-ldap:
   postfix-ldap depends on postfix (= 2.5.1-2ubuntu1.4); however:
Package postfix is not configured yet.
  dpkg: error processing postfix-ldap (--configure):
   dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of postfix-pcre:
   postfix-pcre depends on postfix (= 2.5.1-2ubuntu1.4); however:
Package postfix is not configured yet.
  dpkg: error processing postfix-pcre (--configure):
   dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
  Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   postfix
   postfix-ldap
   postfix-pcre

Whenever postfix is restarted, the following errors are shown in
/var/log/mail.err:
Jun 22 09:50:04 colossus postfix/local[30997]: fatal: open database
/etc/mail/aliases.db: Invalid argument

The *original* version of the aliases.db file gives (file
/etc/postfix/aliases.db):
/etc/postfix/aliases.db: Berkeley DB (Hash, version 8, native byte-order)
... whereas *after* the update it shows version 9.

TEMPORARY FIX: Changing the default_database_type to btree fixes
aliases.db, kills the mail.errors and allows postfix to run normally.

[Bug 800638] [NEW] Unable to connect local DVD drive to guest

you have is a postfix configuration problem unrelated to the package
update.

[Bug 800656] [NEW] Update Manager can not proceed if there is a lock on /etc

2011-06-22 Thread Greg Grossmeier
Public bug reported:

Somehow, there was a bzr lock on /etc when Update Manager did its daily
update of my Natty machine today. Etckeeper was doing a commit before
installing the newly downloaded packages.

I had to open a terminal, cd to /etc, and run sudo bzr break-lock to
allow Update Manager to proceed.

I only figured this out because of an error message mentioning bzr and
then expanding the terminal view in Update Manager to see it repeatedly
attempting to commit but not being allowed.

Re: [Bug 787091] Re: Unable to use USB device in KVM quest

2011-06-22 Thread Royston Carter
Serge,
Unfortunately I have only one vm capable host which is my main machine,
firewall, PBS, family desktop etc. It is an AMD Phenom II, the only other kit I
have is not 64bit and has no virtualisation capabilities. I am reluctant
therefore to risk this unless there in no other way forward.
