The idea is to go thru each of the test cases, edit them on the doc
and ask the list for review. Once someone else has verified your work,
we've been updating the wiki with the results. You can see the ones
we've completed under the completed test cases tab.

I would love for you to update the testcase you mention: Live Session
Persistence Case ID: dls-003. It needs to be re-written, and the case
id should be TC-DLS-003 to conform to our naming convention. You can
make your changes in the spreadsheet I mentioned above and we'll
review. Please do have a look and update any other test cases you
see/find on the wiki using the same process. Thanks!

[ubuntu-uk] re-assigning Print Screen key to open right click menu

2012-02-08 Thread Matthew Sturdy
Hi,

On my laptop's keyboard I have a Print Screen key where I would expect to
find a right click key, and I am trying to make it a Right click key.

I've been googling around, and I can't find the command that I can use to
reassign the key - I do know how to reassign the key in the Keyboard
settings.

I have stopped it from being a Print Screen key at least, and I know that
SHIFT+F10 does what I want, but does anyone know how to invoke the
context menu using any other arbitrary key?

It replicates the right click well on OOCalc, but not in

Possible resolving this issues before final Precise release?

I have tried everything that I can think of in order to get it to work
and I have set all the options according to the alsa page (
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-usb-us122l) and
have read about the patch at (http://wiki.briata.org/doku.php) but this is
apparently included in the kernel now. I have recently used the
alsa-upgrade script to update the alsa version to the latest release. Alsa
is working fine still but I am still getting the same problem. I seem to
remember that when I did a clean install from the distro iso, I didn't get
the problem as regularly. I have also noticed that in the kernel
configuration, the ehci-hcd module is set as compiled into the kernel but I
cannot modprobe for it as it is reported as not existing. I am afraid that
I do not know whether this is because it is compiled into the kernel or
whether it should actually have a module available.

Is there any news on a stable 11.10 low latency kernel?
Also, is there a feature request place (perhaps here) - I came across
tuxonice today and was wondering if it would be possible to request its
inclusion into the kernel. I don't want to attempt to patch the kernel
myself, although I may try.

Also, is there a way of helping at all with the development. I am a
reasonably experienced amateur developer in a number of oop and scripting
languages although my experience with kernel development is absolutely
minimal (I still haven't attempted my own kernel compiling or patching (at
least not successfully!). I am also an experienced musician and a
competent web developer /designer.

Finally, thanks for ubuntu studio. The XFCE wm is great on resources, and
laditray and gladish are a godsend.

On cut down distribution:
Go to distrowatch.com and take a look.

I would recommend checking out Vector linux as well. It was extreemly cut
down and ran very well.

Else if you really need to go cutdown DSL (damnsmalllinux) could be the way
to go.

But you need to define if you are talking cutdown as in a P4 with 512mb ram
or cutdown as in a 500mhz ARM processor with 32mb of flash memory.

Why bother when Debian is so similar to Ubuntu, and takes so much less
effort to maintain? I've never met anyone who needs the bleeding edge

No fun. I do not recommend the testing repo and one just has to go to

before the upgrade to look for those very rare show stoppers (ive had one in 2

output for any warnings. Fun.

True you can not upgrade blindly. That applies to all distros!

I've experienced major breakage every time (all three of them ;-) i've
touched an Arch Linux system and tried to update a package. And that
was with their stable repo. Note that this was just updating to apply
security updates, not anything analogous to a Debian or Ubuntu

I've upgraded almost blindly on Debian Ubuntu many times and not had
even the troubles i had on simple application of security updates on Arch.

As a general rule, if you apt-get upgrade, you are always going to be safe.
If you apt-get dist-upgrade, you should know what you are doing (packages
can be removed). Just be aware of the differences. My workflow is typically
apt-get upgrade and then dist-upgrade. If dist-upgrade tells me that some
package will be removed and it looks important (unity, ubuntu-desktop etc),
I leave it alone for a day and then start it over again.

Ubuntu is by far the most stable upgrades I've ever experienced. IMO,
nothing else comes close.

In light of being reminded about our need for testing, I have put alsa-utils
v1.0.25 into the Ubuntu Audio Dev PPA for precise,
 https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive. Alsa-lib is already in
precise since I jumped the gun a bit, so any issues you find can be filed in
launchpad against alsa-lib. Please test alsa-utils, and file a bug in
launchpad with your issue, noting the version of alsa-utils in the

Thanks, Luke. Testing in PPAs is definitely preferred, so this works
out well. Nick will be in touch.

That's correct, although not only for this reason. Regardless of what
dpkg's Pre-Depends says, Priority and Section fields in packages only
make any difference at all on the initial upload, and otherwise are
overridden by archive administrators; so there's never any point in
keeping Ubuntu deltas for those fields. (Furthermore, the base section
doesn't exist any more anyway, as a quick 'grep-aptavail -XFSection
base' will reveal.)

It's interesting that this appears to be at variance with what Fedora is
doing. Of course, RHEL can take advantage of the separate broad testing
work done in Fedora, and then minimise the risk for their enterprise
distribution. We don't have that luxury in Ubuntu.

The change in RHEL was limited to a subset of machines since it was made

what i always did was: i played the signals - in realtime -

even if the recording is just 20 minutes, i need at least 1,5

of course there is

can i play the signal back faster than realtime for this
workaround?

kind of:

1.) set compressor, limiter etc. as desired

2.) use the range-tool to select the part of the track you want to
manipulate

3.) right klick the range and select Consolidate range with
processing

Ardour will render a new region with all your processing as fast
as your CPU can deliver ;-)

yup... export the track, and that can happen faster than realtime, and
if not, at least you only need to do it one time...

Sim, mas aí eu não teria 1001 facilidades que a canonical teve dinheiro

O que eu quis dizer com ser independente da canonical, é poder ter as

Good idea.. :) make sure it also looks how much we have in stock :) that
helps us to keep track of it :)
(I was thinking of using an existing cms for that, maybe something like
opencart or magento or something. Anyhow, if you're doing it it's your

should do that! :D)

[ubuntu-cloud] Update on Ubuntu automated testing and CI of Openstack

2012-02-08 Thread Adam Gandelman
As promised for anyone who was interested when we announced to the last
last week, here is a blog post James Page and I put together describing
our Openstack testing efforts and infrastructure in greater detail:

http://javacruft.wordpress.com/2012/02/08/automating-openstack-testing-on-ubuntu/

I'm quite pleased with the results of the testing over the last 2 weeks
or so. We've already uncovered a number of bugs that we were able to
help squash and continue to uncover subtle stuff we wouldn't have come
across otherwise until after we've uploaded our weekly Essex/Precise
snapshot into the archive. As a result, 'apt-get insatll $core_project'
on Precise gets you something more stable than at any point during the
Diablo/Oneiric cycle.

In the short term, we'll be working to enable pre-commit multi-node
smoke testing of the stable Diablo branch on Oneiric as well as
deploying and enabling Swift so that we're utilizing all of the current
Devstack exercises (we currently run all but swift).

We're approaching the Ubuntu feature-freeze (Feb. 16th) and, as always,
would greatly appreciate any help further testing and stabilizing
Openstack on Ubuntu!

Cheers,
Adam

Serge,

IMO the better option would be to just ship a binder in /etc/dnsmasq.d/

dnsmasq is a personal dns caching service. I doubt if anyone is using it
as a bind replacement.

By shipping a dnsmasq sub conf file (and making it bind to loopback
only), you eliminate the need to track the list of virtual bridges.
Then, you also don't need to spawn off your own dnsmasq proc from the
lxc init script.

There is special provision in dnsmasq to do exactly this, but it's never
made it into libvirt upstream. Please feel free to push there!

from man dnsmasq NOTES section:

--
dhcp-range may have an interface name supplied as
interface:interface-name. The semantics if this are as follows: For
DHCP, if any other dhcp-range exists _without_ an interface name, then
the interface name is ignored and and dnsmasq behaves as if the
interface parts did not exist, otherwise DHCP is only provided to
interfaces mentioned in dhcp-range declarations. For DNS, if there are
no --interface or --listen-address flags, behaviour is unchanged by the
interface part. If either of these flags are present, the interfaces
mentioned in dhcp-ranges are added to the set which get DNS service.

Similarly, enable-tftp may take an interface name, which enables TFTP
only for a particular interface, ignoring --interface or
--listen-address flags. In addition --tftp-secure and --tftp-unique-root
and --tftp-no-blocksize are ignored for requests from such interfaces.
(A --tftp-root directive giving a root path and an interface should be
provided too.)

These rules may seem odd at first sight, but they
allow a single line of the form
dhcp-range=interface:virt0,192.168.0.4,192.168.0.200 to be added to
dnsmasq configuration which then supplies DHCP and DNS services to
that interface, without affecting what services are supplied to
other interfaces and irrespective of the existance or lack of
interface=interface lines elsewhere in the dnsmasq configuration.
enable-tftp=virt0 and tftp-root=root,virt0 do the same job for TFTP.

The idea is that such a line can be added automatically by libvirt or
equivalent systems, without disturbing any manual configuration.
---

Cheers,

Simon.

[Bug 924002] Re: [Lucid] dbg package symbols are not provided for latest autofs packages

2012-02-08 Thread Martin Pitt
The build log says

dh_strip debug symbol extraction: ignored packages:
autofs5 is already stripped, ignoring
autofs5-ldap is already stripped, ignoring
autofs5-hesiod is already stripped, ignoring
autofs is already stripped, ignoring
autofs-ldap is already stripped, ignoring
autofs-hesiod is already stripped, ignoring

Apparently the binaries are already stripped during build:

gcc -s -lpthread -rdynamic -pie -o automount automount.o indirect.o direct.o
spawn.o module.o mount.o lookup.o state.o flag.o ../lib/autofs.a -ldl -lpthread
-lxml2
strip --strip-debug automount

The build system needs to be told to not do that. dh_strip will do it,
and put the debug symbols into ddebs before. Many projects have an
--enable-debug configure switch, or something similar.

** Summary changed:

- [Lucid] dbg package symbols are not provided for latest autofs packages
+ build system strips binaries, so no debug symbol packages available

The swap errors are due to bug 898365.
The cloud-config given to the instance included:
- mounts:
-- [ ephemeral0, /opt , auto, defaults,noexec ]
-- [ swap, null ]
+   mounts:
+    - [ ephemeral0, /opt , auto, defaults,noexec ]
+    - [ swap, null ]

And given that bug, the /etc/fstab during this reboot probably had:
- /dev/xvda2 /opt auto defaults,noexec,comment=cloudconfig 0 2
- /dev/xvda3 None auto defaults,nobootwait,comment=cloudconfig 0 2
+   /dev/xvda2 /opt auto defaults,noexec,comment=cloudconfig 0 2
+   /dev/xvda3 None auto defaults,nobootwait,comment=cloudconfig 0 2

The thing that confuses me, and the reason I do not think this is cloud-
init's fault is that this happens prior to cloud-init start-local. So,
yes, there is a broken fstab, but not for /dev/xvda2.

The errors listed above are on first reboot after cloud-init wrote those
fstab entries, and then issued 'mount -a' from a upstart job
(cloud-config.conf) launched at:
-start on (filesystem and started rsyslog)
+    start on (filesystem and started rsyslog)

[Bug 928990] [NEW] fsck / dirty filesystem on instance is death

2012-02-08 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

As we saw in bug 898373, if a filesystem needs manual intervention for
an fsck, then boot completely stops. mountall will wait indefinitely on
someone attending to this broken filesystem, and in a cloud (at least in
EC2) with no console access, that means the system will never boot.

I discussed this in #ubuntu-devel with slangasek at
http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2012/02/02/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t16:54.

He suggested to mark disk 'noauto' or 'nobootwait', but that is not
really what someone would want to do.

The ideal fix in some sense would be to start an ssh daemon, and force
the user into a screen session where they could fix it.

To that, slangasek said:
smoser: sure, either fixing /etc/init/mountall-shell.conf to support this, or
diverting it in a cloud-specific job, seems reasonable there

[Bug 928848] Re: nova-common installation triggers nova-manage db sync on compute node

2012-02-08 Thread Adam Gandelman
Hi Alvaro-

This is run in the post-installation step of the nova-common package,
which is installed with nova-compute-xen. It is the expected behavior
and happens to help users who want to install all nova components on a
single node and have something ready to use out-of-the-box. Note that
this command is only called when nova.conf's sql_connection points to a
local sqlite database (which it does with the default config). If
you've installed a compute package on an isolated node, you've probably
also updated your config to point to a remote, shared database. If that
is the case, and you've elected to keep your custom config file during
the next package installation/upgrade, the call to nova db sync is
skipped.

[Bug 897303] Re: bacula-common-mysql uninstallable due to conflicting files

2012-02-08 Thread Scott Moser
I've just uploaded a fix for this.
I've verified installation of the packages, but kept the version at 5.2.3.

I'd very much appreciate someone testing that the packages work (I have
no real experience with bacula).

If someone would like to request or tackle the merge to upstream 5.2.5,
then please open a bug (note, a local 'bzr merge-upstream' seemed to go
OK).

[Bug 925513] Re: plymouth should not run in container

2012-02-08 Thread Steve Langasek
I'm having trouble sussing out the underlying principle here that
warrants special-casing plymouth in a container. Plymouth is the
standard boot-time I/O multiplexer; any upstart jobs that need to
interact with the user at boot time should be using plymouth. Now for
the most part, this currently consists of mountall and cryptsetup, and I
can understand how it might be that neither of those are relevant in the
context of a container. But what about things like
/etc/init/failsafe.conf? Or a hypothetical apache job that prompts for
an SSL passphrase through plymouth?

So it's not clear to me that disabling plymouth in the container is the
right answer, as opposed to fixing any problems plymouth has when
running. Writing errors to the console seems to be part and parcel of
plymouth's responsibilities.

[Bug 908154] Re: PHP session garbage collection measured in minutes instead of seconds

2012-02-08 Thread Ondřej Surý
It's not really a bug in PHP5, but a feature in psmisc package before
22.15 (see related Debian bug).

You can pick new psmisc[*] from my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/php5 and report back here. (Be
aware to not install 5.3.10-1 unless you really want to.)

* - It was uploaded just now, so it will take some time to build
properly.

(Hint: You might want to backport fuser changes to old Ubuntu releases
if confirmed this helps instead of hacking php5 cron job.)

You just need to do:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow debconf

It's not a bug in PHP5 package (it uses standard debconf interface), so
I am reassigning to debconf (where it could be probably closed as
workaround for broken terminals exists).

[Ubuntu-US-CA] San Diego Ubuntu Hour.

2012-02-08 Thread Philip Ballew
I am pleased to announce the Febuary March and April editions of the San
Diego Ubuntu Hour. All of these hours will be taking place at the Starbucks
where the five and eight come together. Perfect for all people to get here
with ease. The Ubuntu hours will be taking place at 6pm and last until we
have had enough fun. Feel free to RSVP for the February hour right now and
after the February hour has occurred, I will send out announcements for
March and so on.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Add Team Meetings to Calendar?

2012-02-08 Thread Dave 3 Ubuntu
Hello all! Ive recently started using Thunderbird to handle all of my
email and like it a lot. I notice the calendar portion of Thunderbird
allows one to install an iCal weblink into the calendar. Now, every time
a new event is added, my calendar is also nicely updated. Just now
Philip Ballew sent us an email informing of the San Diego Ubuntu Hours
and sure enough the event calendar in Thunderbird was also updated. Bare
with me, as this is all new to me since Ive only used web based mail up
until this point.

So my question is... should we add in the Sunday meetings as an event
for Ubuntu California?

Best, Dave

PS... is there any interest for me to do another Ubuntu Store shipment
where I group all orders together to save on shipping? Please check the
Ubuntu shop and get back to me, thanks!

Rather than an event, loco.ubuntu.com offers specific Meeting
category that you can add irc-based team meetings to.

We haven't really used this since we still use the wiki for meeting
stuff, but now that time zone handling is fixed we could start
maintaining the one in the LoCo directory too (just one more thing to
do post-meeting). I added the meeting on Sunday to the calendar so you
should see it pop up in Thunderbird now.
