Can you ping out from the laptop? Open a terminal and try and ping your
ADSL router (probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254).

Simon's advice is good.

Also, I suggest you try getting wired working first - disconnect or
turn off wireless - update your machine and /then/ disconnect the
cable and try wireless. Both at once is just asking for trouble.

I know this might seem simple, but have you rebooted since installing, I
sometimes find that a reboot fixes some problems, especially with the
wireless connections.

2012-02-17 Thread John Oliver
If it is only Firefox and Thunderbird affected, check the settings of those
applications for stray proxy settings etc. Whilst I don't see how such peculiar
settings could have come into force, they could have done, and my advice is to
check the network settings in Firefox/Thunderbird preferences.

Just a silly thought - HOW did you install? You didn't by any chance
install on top of Windows using Wubi did you? If you did a clean
install, did you use the Ubuntu defaults? When you boot from the
live-CD does the wired internet work?

[ubuntu-uk] Broken Precise .....

2012-02-17 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there I just tried to update Precise, and got the message
telling me I could do a 'Partial Upgrade'. I tried to do that, and
upgrade manager said there was a problem with the desktop due to broken
a gnome package. I tried to do:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^

and was met with this: The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 gnome-session : Breaks: unity-2d ( 5.4~) but 5.2.1-0ubuntu2 is to be
installed

 unity : Depends: libnux-abiversion-20120202.01
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any thoughts? Or can I expect to get back to normal after next update?

Regards,Barry.

I've not managed to find out how to get this information. I did try
installing aptitude hoping this would give me more information, but it
seems to want to remove gnome-session, ubuntu-desktop and unity 2d
And now the update-manager reliably crashes when I tell it to do the
'partial upgrade' it offers, so I've reported this as a bug. I seem to
be a bit lost on this one.

Thanks again,Barry.

That can commonly happen if the archive is inconsistant, particularly
with unity packages where there are tight version constraints between
them. Typically they resolve themselves in a few hours and an install
will continue.

I would normally not advise to take any offered Partial upgrades. They
tend to lead to pain unless you intimately understand the output of
apt-get when resolving conflicts.

Good luck.

I'd agree with this.

I have up till recently, synaptic being rather broken, updated from a
terminal and then used synaptic to deal with upgrades.

Never had a partial that way that caused me issues - update manager is
prone to causing 'issues' during the dev cycle so I never use it, nor
the software-centre.

In the past I did it all from the terminal - but have been subscribed to
various synaptic bugs.

I'm sure there are reasons why I shouldn't but previously I did

sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

After installing aptitude ... sigh

Recently

sudo apt-get update gksudo synaptic

Good luck ;)

I think it was more of a timing issue, and whatever method you used to
update would have had problems with the state of the repository at that
time.

On 02/11/2012 02:58 PM, Chase Douglas wrote:
 Hi all,

I've spent some time working on making ClickPad trackpads work better.
I have put the end result up at ppa:chasedouglas/clickpad. I would like
some testing feedback for the changes.

In this context, a ClickPad is any touchpad with buttons integrated
into the touch surface. This includes many variations of Synaptics
trackpads and all the multitouch Apple trackpads. However, not all
devices are detected as clickpads by the kernel, so you may need to
 manually override the clickpad detection.

I have attached two scripts. The first enables clickpad support, and the
second enables a right button area in the lower right corner of the
trackpad. The 'right button area should overlap with the right button
area painted on some ClickPads. You are free to enable or disable it as
 you wish.

The scripts require the device name or id as the first argument. You can
query the device name and id by running xinput list.

 So what does this do?

 * You can now perform click-and-drag with two separate fingers
 * With the right button area enabled, a button press in the area will
fire a right button press instead of a left button press
 * Click actions are possible, but they are an advanced feature I don't
want to support yet by detailing them here

If we get good feedback on this, then I would like to push it into
Precise. I also want to add a checkbox to the mouse settings preferences
to enable the right button area too.

 Thanks for testing!

 -- Chase

I went to test this on a recent MacBook Air, but it has a Broadcom
bcm5974 clickpad. Any chance of getting support for that?

It will work out without any changes if you tell X that it is a
clickpad. This is what the enable-clickpad.sh script does.

You just cherry-picked my patch so the kernel tells X that it is a
clickpad automatically, so you won't even need the enable-clickpad.sh
script in the future :).

Subject: Your recent patch of CompizConfig Settings Manager.
To: Andrew Starr-Bochicchio a.star...@gmail.com

Hi Andrew!

I'm one of the maintainers of the Ubuntu community's most popular and
comprehensive guide for troubleshooting Unity. And I've just become
aware of your recent patch of CompizConfig Settings Manager in regard to
showing a warning message upon opening it, and removing the option the
disable - and enable! - the Unity Plugin from the main page.

I'm fine with the first one, a welcome warning to the unexperienced
user, and no negative side-effects, as it can also be disabled; but reg.
the latter, please consider the actual use cases of the Unity Plugin
checkbox on the main page of CCSM:

- Deliberately disabling the Unity Plugin in order to use any other
panel/dock in the Unity session (yes, one should better set up a
separate session for that, but who does that?! - definitely not the same
unexperienced users this patch is aiming to protect).

- Re-enabling the Unity Plugin after being disabled as a matter of
conflict/dependency, for example, the most ubiquitous cause, when trying
to enable the Desktop Cube. These users are then eventually prevented
from being able to easily and transparently re-enable the Unity Plugin!

- Indication if the Unity Plugin is enabled or not; transparency.

Surely, I can easily add a note to our troubleshooting guide that in
case the Unity Plugin is disabled, you first need to click on its button
on the main page of CCSM to be eventually able to re-enable it, but
there are loads of advices strewn all over the Ubuntu Forums and other
places that wouldn't work anymore then.

So considering both the use cases of the checkbox and the to be expected
lack of hints on how to actually check - and change - the state of the
Unity Plugin (at least in the first couple of weeks), this patch
actually wouldn't help unexperienced users, it would achieve the
opposite, virtually hinder them from both using a different panel/dock
and re-enabling the Unity Plugin when disabled as a result of trying to
enable the Desktop Cube - one of the first things a great deal of users
is doing after installing Ubuntu.

Sorry for this wordy message, btw., I'm just trying to make you get this
right. :D

Krytarik

I have to agree with Krytarik , removing the checkbox isn't that
beneficial taking into account the occasions people disable the plugin
in . I initially liked the idea , but the situation is as follows :
-no checkbox prevents accidental (or curiosity) clicks (but how often
does that happen)
-the main cases in witch people disable unity is when CCSM disables it
because of dependencies , so the checkbox being removed only harms in
those cases

So basically the change needed is to make Unity not available for
disabling (through CCSM. That is , if Unity is the only WM using CCSM in
Ubuntu distros) , which sadly is probably harder than a cosmetic change .

To conclude, IMO you should revert the change .

Please allow me give an explanation.
That day,I recommend Ubuntu Linux to my friends and co-workers.But I was

One years ago,I had recommended Ubuntu Linux. They said:It looks beauty, but
it lacks of many useful softwares and has some obvious defects,we'd better
wait for it to be mature.
But today I has once again failed. They said the same thing. Theirs words

Actually,I didn't hate Unity,I also love Ubuntu.

I see Ubuntu Unity's new version becomes more stably.
I believe It will get better.
Thanks for developers' efforts.
Thank you.

I agree. Especially since we switched to a two-weeks kernel update
rhythm where almost every update in the most recent stable and LTS
releases breaks ABI, kernels pile up like mad.

  1) Surely we're not the only Ubuntu users whose /boot or root
partition has filled up with age-old kernels, are we?

Certainly not. I ran into several home support cases where Ubuntu
started acting strangely because the root partition filled up, and we
 removed about 15 old kernels.

  2) Is computer-janitor here to stay, or to be abandoned in favor of
 something else?
  3) Can we expect computer-janitor to work on command-line only
environments (Ubuntu servers) too? If so, can we get SRUs out so that
 it works on older distributions?

TBH, I don't think c-j or any other manual tool is the right answer
here. While it's nice to have it, it doesn't feel right that Ubuntu
automatically introduces the problem, but not automatically clean
 up after itself.

  4) Can we, as a distro, provide and recommend a utility to clean out
specifically old kernels (perhaps aside from cleaning up userspace
 cruft a la computer-janitor)?

I think it'd be best if update-manager would auto-remove all kernel
packages except the most recent two or three during dist-upgrade. This
needs to be specified carefully of course, as people might explicitly
run a kernel from the previous distro release. So perhaps some
clevernes like if you install linux-image-3.2.0-N-generic, delete all
 kernels up to linux-image-3.2.0-(N-2)-generic.

While agreeing that it would be quite helpful and seems appropriate to have the
cleanup automatic, there is a slight potential pitfall (or two). There are
various flavours of kernels and people may or may not deliberately have those
installed in parallel. Also various releases had sometimes a changing set of
depending packages. For a while this should be only linux-backports-modules
(there had been linux-ubuntu-modules and linux-restricted-modules). Though this
is not so much of a problem.
From a pattern matching point of view the generic-pae kernels are a bit of a
pain as they tend to ruin the use the last part of a split by - for the
flavor.
But anyway, I think the main issue is the various flavours, so a cleanup that is
automatic should retain the last three of each, even though this may tend to
leave more kernels around.

-Stefan
linux-headers-* is already covered by apt-get autoremove, which is
good. Perhaps we can mark older kernels as auto-removable as well, so
that without any other tools you at least have one command to clean
 them up all?

For servers it'd be even better if apt-get dist-upgrade would do the
cleanup itself, of course. But we have fewer places to hook into the
logic than in update-manager, so this might be tricky.

Are you sure about this? I did a test and I don't think that autoremove
removes the linux-headers-*:
$ dpkg -l | awk '/^ii/{print $2}' | grep ^linux
linux-firmware
linux-generic
linux-headers-3.0.0-14
linux-headers-3.0.0-14-generic

linux-headers-3.0.0-16-generic
linux-headers-generic
linux-image-3.0.0-15-generic
linux-image-3.0.0-16-generic
linux-image-generic
linux-libc-dev
linux-sound-base

$ sudo apt-get autoremove
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.

I'd like to suggest instead the following modifications to the script
that was posted before:
#!/bin/bash
OLDKERNEL=$(ls -tr /boot/vmlinuz-* | head -n -2 | cut -d- -f2- | awk
'{print linux-image- $0}')
OLDHEADERS=$(ls -tr /boot/vmlinuz-* | head -n -2 | cut -d- -f2- | sed
's/-generic//g' | awk '{print linux-headers- $0}')
if [ -n $OLDKERNEL -o -n $OLDHEADERS ]; then
sudo apt-get -q remove --purge $OLDKERNEL $OLDHEADERS
fi

(note that this version is not fully automatic as apt will prompt the
user before removing packages)

Server guys (me included) will only ask that whatever's the default in grub
be kept. That, and maybe 2 latest kernel excluding the default.

Server guys are also (usually) much more aware with what's going on, so for
them they would appreciate a tool that will:

* List all kernels (and their baggages) found in /boot

* Protect the current default in grub

* Show which 2 other kernels are recommended/protected

* Provide a way to protect other kernels explicitly

* Delete the useless kernels (and their baggage) automatically.

Is there a way to know the last time a kernel was booted and use that as

This will allow removing kernels unused for months limiting the risks

Having 5 or so kernels would also be handy for troubleshooting drm bugs;
once and a while we have to have the user boot earlier kernels to
bracket when a regression started. It's not a huge issue though; we can
always just have them download older kernels. But if they're already on
disk it makes troubleshooting a bit more convenient.

Time of last boot, and/or total number of times booted would be
interesting metrics. For fallback purposes I'd love to hang onto a old
known-good kernel that I'd booted a hundred times, rather than the one
from last week which may well have the same bug I'm trying to get
around. But maybe this is overthinking things. ;-)

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Problemas na re-instalação

2012-02-17 Thread Usiel Amaral

Wilson, eu faria assim:
- faça backup de todos os arquivos de dados, do windows e do linux
(textos, planilhas, fotos, vídeos...), pra um lugar fora desse HD (outro
HD, outro micro via rede etc...)

/dev/sda1 NTFS 60Gb - S.O. Windows
/dev/sda2 NTFS 200Gb - pra arquivos de dados (d: do windows e /dados
do linux)

/dev/sda3 EXT4 33Gb - S.O. Linux /
/dev/sda4 EXT4 5Gb (o q sobrou do HD, não inferior a 2Gb) - Linux swap

Usando a partição de dados windows (d:) no linux:
# mkdir /dados (cria um diretório dados no raiz)

# gedit /etc/fstab (edite o arquivo /etc/fstab)

acrescente esta linha dentro e no final do fstab:
/dev/sda2 /dados auto defaults 0 2

reinicialização do serviço.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Rede domestica

2012-02-17 Thread Hálen Yuri Oliveira
Wilson minha dica é:

Desktop:

Você vai precisar configurar todas as

  -- deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main
  - troca por:
  -- deb http://192.168.0.1:3142/archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main

  Considerando que o IP do servidor é 192.168.0.1 e a porta do apt-cacher
 é a

comigo).

[Ubuntu-be] small project for C++ programmer

2012-02-17 Thread Jan Bongaerts
Hi there,

I have a friend who is looking for a C++ programmer for a small project.
Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

It's for programming a graphic representation of a counter that calculates
2 values 600 times in 10 seconds.
The counter is used in a simulation module that enhances the simulation
process of the existing machine, but needs to stay within certain
limitations according to the capacity of the machine. Sample non-verified
C++ code will be provided. The code needs to be debugged and a graphic
representation for two parameters needs to be added: displacement (Y)
versus time (X - 10 secs) and Roll Angle (Y) versus time (X - 10 secs).
FYI the program counts 390 lines.
The code should run on a MAC.

Let me know if you're interested by replying to my personal address, and
tell me what you would charge for such a small service.
I'll put you in touch with my friend.

Regards,
Jan.

[Bug 933723] Re: resolvconf creating bogus resolv.conf file

2012-02-17 Thread Thomas Hood
Yes, I think that Debian bug report #483098 gives the background
information needed to understand what's going on here.

Bind9 should certainly not by default send its (loopback) address to
resolvconf. Bind9 should only send its address to resolvconf if it is
known that named can provide general DNS.

Seems to me to be rather important.

[Bug 934118] [NEW] Floating ips not available to instances after upgrade

2012-02-17 Thread Andrew Glen-Young
Public bug reported:

I have recently upgraded my Openstack installation from the version packaged in
Oneiric to the one packaged in Precise.
After the installation, no floating ip addresses were available to instances.

When running euca-allocate-address returns a NoMoreFloatingIps
exception.

Before the upgrade, I shutdown all running instances but I did not
unallocate and unassign floating ip addresses. After the upgrade the
floating_ips table in the Nova database had entries, but clearly these
entries where seen as reserved by Nova. It seems as though the database
migrations do not handle this case.

Workaround:

I needed to run the following SQL query to free up the floating ip
addresses for allocation to instances:

sql UPDATE floating_ips SET deleted_at = NULL, fixed_ip_id = NULL,
project_id = NULL, host = NULL where floating_ips.deleted = 0 AND
floating_ips.auto_assigned = 0 and host is NULL;

[Bug 934256] [NEW] lxc-clone should replace/change hwaddr when cloning containers

2012-02-17 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

I hit this using the local juju provider on precise with the latest
updates to lxc.

The ubuntu template now automatically generates a hwaddr for the lxc
container when it is created.

However this then get propagated to clones of of this container
resulting in multiple lxc instances all with the same mac address.

I worked around this by scrubbing it from the base template container;
however lxc-clone should probably remove or re-generate this during
container cloning.

[Bug 760443] [NEW] Bacula installation fails at dbconfig-common stage

2012-02-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a Ubuntu 10.4.2 server, updated to the latest binaries.

I have attempted to install bacula using apt-get install bacula. The
process seems to go well until the various dialogues to set up the MySQL
db connection. After entering the password, the dbconfig-common script
attempts to connect to the MySQL database and fails, even after various
retries.

As soon as I select 'abort', the apt proceeds to install the MySQL
server. This of course explains why the dbconfig-common script fails,
as it needs to be preceeded (not followed) by the MySQL server
installation.

Causing MySQL server to be installed first should resolve the issue.

[Bug 925122] Re: container's udevadm trigger --add affects the host

detection interface, we can remove this patch.

  * debian/udev.udevtrigger.upstart: Update to wait for 'container' or
'not-container' to be emitted, then skip just exit 0 but still run
post-stop if it's a container and run 'udevadm trigger' if it's not.
This is needed until we have a proper device namespace preventing
udev events from affecting the outside.
(LP: #925122)
  * Make udev depend on upstart = 1.4-0ubuntu6 to ensure the next reboot
will indeed either emit container or not-container.

[Bug 933723] Re: resolvconf creating bogus resolv.conf file

The next upload of bind9 will default to not enabling resolvconf, since
there is no way for it to guarantee that it can resolve addresses and is
not behind some egress-filtering firewall.

[Bug 932239] Re: Multiple Samba security vulnerabilities

2012-02-17 Thread Steve Beattie
Note that Ubuntu, like many linux distributions, backports security
fixes rather than upgrading to new versions of software to attempt to
prevent the introduction of regressions and changes in behavior in
released versions of software.

CVE-2010-3069 was addressed in http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-987-1
CVE-2011-2522 and CVE-2011-2694 were addressed in
http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1182-1
CVE-2011-0719 was addressed in http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1075-1
CVE-2010-1635 and CVE-2010-1642 can only kill the current connection of the
attacker, the vulnerabilities do not affect the service as a whole, and as such
have negligable security impact. They've also been addressed in maverick and
subsequent releases.

What is Manzanita?

[Bug 925024] Re: apparmor makes it impossible to install postgresql-common on Precise

2012-02-17 Thread Serge Hallyn
@Brad,

I would consider this a high priority bug. This pretty much means that
containers cannot be protected by apparmor, because we can't predict
when they might be - for no apparent reason - unable to access some file
which they should be able to access.

[Bug 934256] Re: lxc-clone should replace/change hwaddr when cloning containers

2012-02-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lxc - 0.7.5-3ubuntu28

lxc (0.7.5-3ubuntu28) precise; urgency=low

  * 0045-fix-other-templates: lots of template fixes. Make sshd, debian,
fedoray, and busybox templates actually work. Fix inconsistent --auth_key
vs --auth-key usage in ubuntu templates.
  * 0046-lxc-clone-change-hwaddr - when cloning a container, give it a new
hwaddr. (LP: #934256)
