Call for testing on Webapps

2012-07-25 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
I made a post to my blog (since this week isn't busy enough!) about the
call for testing being opened on webapps. There's a nice set of
testcases available that you can help report results on. The technology
is very cool, but could use the work of our excellent eyes and
experience in helping make sure it works across many different
configurations. Don't worry, the call isn't ending this week, so for
those of you already testing, make sure you take some time for you
before you jump in on this :-)

Wiki Updates

2012-07-25 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
As some of you may have noticed I have been editing our wiki pages again
to try and present a better view of how we as a community operate in QA,
and ensure the new folks who come along are able to get up to speed
quickly and efficiently. To that end I've edited (and will be continuing
to do so) the following pages:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/QATracker
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Activities
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Kernel
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Cadence
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/

Additionally, I am attempting to get a FAQ page of sorts setup with
phillw's help about the basics of QA -- terms we use, how we operate
etc. All of this is intended to help us a community grow. If your
interested in writing some documentation, making some video
walkthroughs, or have an idea about helping us welcome new folks (even
if your new yourself!) please let me know. Thanks everyone!

They're quite useful sometimes, possibly less so now than in pre-broadband

harking back to early Un*x days when all accounts were essentially shared

Webfaction's[1] shared hosting accounts come with shell access for you
to pretty much do whatever you want.

It is about the same money as a small VPS but you get some things (front
end web server, DB servers, ...) running outside your memory allocation
and, more important for me, managed by somebody who properly knows what
they're doing. It is a bit less flexible than a VPS though since you
only get to play in your home directory. I have a VPS (I'd second Alan's
recommendation of Bitfolk) for experimenting and anything I want to keep
running without the risk of my playing around breaking it gets moved to
webfaction.

I repeat it: I'm not using my USB interface for good reasons. I've got
one PCIe and two PCI interface (regarding to a missing cable I only can
use one of the PCI interfaces at the moment). Even in the 80s, when
computers were capable of real real-time (the correct term is hard
real-time) I used several MIDI interfaces when possible. Using one
Interface for all could cause issues, even when the computer doesn't
produce jitter.

A really big issue for Linux is, that there are less coders interested
in facts about MIDI jitter and the abilities of musicians. Any comment
about MIDI jitter and they call you a troll, asshole etc.. There are
just a few coders who don't, a good reason to use JACK2, they listened
to users like me and improved JACK2 a lot regarding to MIDI jitter.

However, you can't improve MIDI timing for an USB interface. Get rid of
USB for MIDI.

I don't know how clear it is from what is said, but it looks like we will
be moving back in that direction. See item 5 in the quantal blueprint:
 https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntustudio-q-workflows

To me even an E-book is the same as any book, it is just distributed
differently. Scott's words were stronger in regard to adding publishing.
I wouldn't hold your breath for 12.10 though, contributers seem to be
pretty thin over the summer... those left are doing the best we can. I've
waited three weeks trying to get some packages released so we can test
them, but the people are stretched too thin right now.

I think I have a font manager to add, three yes marks, zero no marks so
far. Could you give me a list of apps for publishing? We need two lists
actually. A minimal list that gives a complete workflow from start to
finish. That is one of each that pulls in the fewest extra depends we can.
I would also like a fuller list that we can set up for easy install for
those who want more. Maybe start with a list of types of apps: Font
manager, font creator, DTP program... etc. There is going to be some over
lap from this to graphics I would think, but publishing seems to be part
of the vision for Ubuntu Studio. Scott, please correct me if or where I'm
 wrong.

Anyway, I think I will mark a part of the desktop seed as DTP stuff to
keep it separate, unless someone gives me permission to start a DTP file
in seeds so we can have a meta for it. At least if it is visibly separate
it should be easy to move out of the desktop into it's own meta (or just
remove if it doesn't work out). They will all be recommends so it is
easy to remove unwanted SW and replace it with other Apps.

the desktop publishing applications were intentionally removed for 12.04
because i wanted to get back to a small core of exceedingly competent
functionality. i had felt that ubuntu studio was trending to become a
software library where applications were included because it seemed like
a good idea rather than based on a well thought out and defined process to
accomplish a goal.

however, as len has commented i feel very passionate about including them.
what we currently lack is competent information about which applications
_should_ we include to support user to create content. in audio terms, i
wouldn't want to include JACK because i know it's important and awesome
without including ardour or qtractor; this is only providing a single chain
in a tool chain.

A FontManager for sorting, selecting, cataloging

I am already suggesting a package for this.

i looked at the application 'fontmanager' and i like it and wished i had

  A FontForge for editing/CREATING fonts

The only one in our repos seems to be fontforge, again I would install the
app and make the doc and extras easy to install.

i know nothing about creating fonts so i abstain from commenting.

  A color selection app

I will quite freely admit my ignorance here... to my mind the first
thought is that every app that uses colour has a colour selection utility.
So you are obviously looking for something more. There are in the
blueprints a number of items dealing with colour:

Agave is a colour selection applications that we have included in the past.

From the conversation I have seen to do with this I gather a lot of this
stuff is to do with setting the monitor to reproduce colour correctly.

I have no website developing experience so can't speak to that ...

Website development is a mess IMO. Much of the original intent of HTML has
been lost. I use bluefish myself, or a text editor for minor fixes,
because I want to see how much code I am cranking out.
rantI like low bandwidth. I like self formatting code... I hate web
pages that insist on using the browser full page to read everything
without shifting the page left and right... oh and they expect you to have
a monitor with the same rez as the webdeveloper (or his boss) has. Maximum
webpage width should fit the width of a netbook anymore. /rant
 apologize for rant

Anyway, there are so many tools for generating HTML, I don't think it is
worth including any. However, the graphics tools needed for DTP and
included in our graphics section should cover everything up to the html
generation part of things. We can suggest HTML editors to install ... Oh,
 we already include gedit ;-)

i agree that web development is a myriad of not only options, but also
opinions.

my suggestion is that we do not address this issue at this time and focus
on the things that we know for which we can make good and welcomed
decisions.

Thankyou for your input. This is one of those areas I know little about...
I still write letters with a text editor, I figure the information
included is all that is needed. I do understand that proper formating
makes a book or other document easier to read and that there are tools to
 make this easier.

As always comments are welcome... and requested.

one thing i wouldn't want to do is make a install image that was 4GB for

if gimp paint studio is in process into the repos, i would be happy to wait

likewise, i hope our work flows are well though out and provide enough

unfortunately, alchemy appeared to have zero development for years and it
is not in the repos. this doesn't mean we can't work up a supported work

i already mentioned that i would rather wait a reasonable period for gimp

We have a package called ubuntustudio-icon-theme, but we don't use it.
Instead we use xubuntu-icon-theme. Any of our own icons currently reside
in ubuntustudio-default-settings and end up in /usr/share/pixmaps on the
install. This has been fine as we have had only a few icons to deal
with... but it is not the right way really. As per blueprint item:
[ubuntustudio-dev] All icons for ubuntuStudio submenus should be New
Ubuntu studio icons in case the ones we are using from xfce vanish: TODO

Some of the icons we use for our *.directory files also come from
applications which may go away leaving broken stuff, so we need our own
icons for any of our own *.directory files.

We should probably replace xubuntu-icon-theme with
ubuntustudio-icon-theme, even if the studio version depends on the xubuntu
version at least for now. Our own icons should then end up in -icon-theme
rather than -settings. And they should end up in
 /usr/share/icons/ubuntustudio/

Right now ubuntustudio-icon-theme has no installable files, it just
depends on elementary-icon-theme. I would therefore suggest that the
depends be changed to xubuntu-icon-theme and the desktop meta be changed
to reflect this. This should not change anything on the install, but
should be tested to make sure things still work.

Next the ubuntustudio directory should be added to /usr/share/icons with a
file that depends on elementaryXubuntu and the default icon theme change
 to ubuntustudio... test for breakage.

Then we can start migrating icons to this package.

Does anyone see a problem with this? Are there many icons in
elementaryXubuntu? Should we just add those few to our own directory and
 bypass depending on xubuntu-icon-theme?

 Comments please.

Note: there will be some icons being developed. for now they will end up
in the settings package as install to the pixmaps directory.

len,

if you go back into previous version of the ubuntustudio-icon-theme you
will see that we did have icons at one time. i think it was either based on
the human or oxygen theme. i don't remember currently.

the reason we migrated to the elementary theme is because our icon theme
was broken in several areas and we didn't have the developers to fix and
maintain it. i moved in this direction because i was attempting to minimize
maintenance for the ubuntu studio developers. my mantra during this time
was 'simplicity - sustainability - success'. i still believe in this.

however, if we have the commitment for creating and maintenance, i
certainly welcome a new icon theme.

i am unsure what conversations you have previously had with micah or to

micah is very stringent, and rightly so, about one change per bzr commit.
this will greatly simplify rolling back a change via the bzr commands.

Yes, but doing it this way avoids all benefits associated with the
vector format. Some of the algorithms available have simple shape
matching features, but in all likelihood every artifact, pixellation,
dither effect, etc. is going to be assigned its own vector, so that the
result is less scalable than the original file.

The point of retracing the work is so that one has the original
natural shapes stored as vectors, independent of the rendering: this
allows the shape to be rendered at arbitrary scale and look reasonable.
Automatic conversion may initially appear to be less work, but it likely
generates a requirement to retouch all the scaled images, which tends to
grow to be more work over time.

Sure, and if you choose a target resolution that is an absolute power
of 2 of the starting resolution and only work in reduction, most of the
lines even look crisp. With vector representation, one can scale indefintely
with zero loss due to scaling: one only sees irregularities when either the
target format cannot support the number of elements (e.g. drawing a chess
set with grooves between squares at 16x16), or there are limitations of the
creation medium (e.g. scaling a drawing done at 45x60 cm to A0).

To put it differently, a vector representation (such as SVG) attempts
to capture the individual strokes, and then renders them to any target,
either specific targets (using imagemagick or another tool), or arbitrary
targets (such as a 5x5 cm screen region). As such, when generating bitmaps
from vector represenations, sufficient information is available to ensure
that the artist's intent is preserved regarding hard or soft edges, smooth
or jagged curves, etc. A bitmap representation only stores the result of
the drawing for a specific size and colour depth, so when scaling, one must
estimate the intent of the artist, and compromise accurate represenation of
the relative size of elements against the quality of the appearance of the
elements.

To see the effect of this yourself, take a look through the icons already
installed on your computer: try scaling them to various sizes (including
upscaling to e.g. 800x800 or so). I suspect you'll find that vector files
(from SVG) survive better than bitmaps.

Fico no aguardo.

Exemplo:

Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.2.0-27 .
Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.2.0-27 . Recovery Mode
Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.2.0-26 .
Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.2.0-26 . Recovery Mode
Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.2.0-25 .
Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.2.0-25 . Recovery Mode

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Dois monitores notebook Positivo

2012-07-25 Thread Eduardo S. Gonçalves

Boa tarde, Jeferson.
desconfigurada. Na janela de configuração dos monitores continua
aparecendo apenas o monitor do notebook.
Nesse caso, a
tela inteira aparece no monitor externo.

O nativo eu
cortei os fios e joguei fora.

O monitor externo funciona perfeitamente, porém não consegui ainda
configurar a resolução nativa do monitor, de 1440x900. Funciona só em
1024x768.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Fico no aguardo.

Segue o
resultado do comando lspci. Caso alguém possa ajudar, ficarei muito

grato.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] cadastrar usuários e compartilhar pastas de forma controlada

2012-07-25 Thread Antonio Silva
Olá Zandre, Anderson, Pedro e a todos da lista

A coisa é simples.

etc. A privacidade é importante.

Nunca tinha ouvido falar

[Ubuntu-be] Custom ISO ubuntu-be

Hello,

I made a custom ubuntu 12.04 ISO for ubuntu-be.
http://ubuntuone.com/5aoLPU7CZM5H1eSxz3G0Ts

Screenshot
http://ubuntuone.com/1WQJXaZxYMGBMdPputMk2i

Please download and test it, afterwards give me your opinion and remarks.

What are the changes i made ?
- New default wallpaper ubuntu-be, made by Massimiliano
- added applications : ubuntu restricted, myunity, gimp, vlc
- Iso update to the last kernel and apps updates
- documents on desktop during live-session and also after installation :
presentation ubuntu 12.04 in dutch

Untill now the size is just under 1gb, if extra apps are needed just let me
know and i can add them if necessary.

I will ask Massimiliano to modify the wallpaper so that it looks more native.
Maybe default precise wallpaper with ubuntu-be logo.

If Wouter sends me a copy (.pdf) of the manual then i can add it to the
desktop.

Manuals in other languages like french-german are also welcome. The EN-version
will soon be added with the next ISO i make.

The final ISO must be ready before 14sept2012 because we want to use it at
Software Freedom Day 2012.

Test the iso and let me know what you think about it, all comments are welcome.

[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2012-07-25 Thread Selene Scriven
I've been duct-taping my way around this issue (and other similar
issues) for years. It's terribly kludgy, but it's simple and effective
and doesn't break on each upgrade:

  /etc/init.d/openvpn start
  while true ; do cp /etc/resolv.conf.good /etc/resolv.conf ; sleep 15 ; done

Or something like that, anyway. I actually run 'vpn up' and 'vpn down',
but the above is how it deals with having too many cooks in the DNS
kitchen.

[Bug 1028981] [NEW] ceph should Recommend xfsprogs

2012-07-25 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

As the Recommends on btrfs has been removed from ceph (due to stability

[Bug 1028981] Re: ceph should Recommend xfsprogs

2012-07-25 Thread James Page
Mainly because its the recommendation of the ceph team upstream:

  http://ceph.com/docs/master/config-cluster/file-system-
recommendations/

I think the default would still be ext4 (as this does not required a
separate device/filesystem).

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Stefan Fritsch
I cannot reproduce this on Debian unstable with either 2.2.22-9 or
2.2.22-1.

Wild guess: Do you have a per-user process limit configured in
/etc/security/limits.conf ?

If no, it would be helpful if you could provide a backtrace of the process that
curl connects to and hangs. There is some documentation about how to do that
in
/usr/share/doc/apache2.2-common/README.backtrace. But the doc is for Debian.
For Ubuntu, the installing of the debugging symbols works differently (maybe
someone else can provide a pointer).

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Evgeny Anisiforov
As i have written, this is a clean ubuntu install, i did not change any config
files upon mentioned.
/etc/security/limits.conf ist standard config file with no limits inside (only
comments).

I can't figure out how to determine the pid of apache child process that
curl connects to. If you have an idea, please let me know.

Here is some output, that i get with gdb for a hanging apache:

main apache process (determined with pstree -p):

This is basically the same as for the working instance before the crash. The
output changes, if i disable mod_ssl.
Any ideas?

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Clint Byrum
This appears to be legitimate, I was able to reproduce it on an HP cloud
instance with the given parameters. The first 1000 actual requests
always finish, but after that all fail.

I notice these kernel messages:
[ 1131.976324] TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 80. Dropping request. Check
SNMP counters.

But I don't think it is related.

I see this as well *sometimes*:

[Wed Jul 25 20:20:10 2012] [error] server reached MaxClients setting,
consider raising the MaxClients setting

But MaxClients is set to 1500 so I'm not sure what that is.

The one difference mod_ssl would introduce would be the use of shared
memory for statistical gathering. So maybe the stats are running into a
shm limit.

I tried raising shmall to 4194304, but that just slowed things down a
bit, it still fails right at 1000. I also tried raising shmmni to 8192,
and that did nothing. Same for doubling shmmax.

On comparing strace's with and without mod_ssl enabled, the problem most
likely lies with shared memory or semaphore opertaions, which only seem
to be happening with mod_ssl. I also tried adjusting the numbers in
/proc/sys/kernel/sem but that did not alleviate the problem.

Also its worth noting that 1000 processes is inefficient for more
reasons than just memory. Context switching at the process level will be
far more expensive than a threaded model. For that reason alone I've set
this to Medium, as its really just not a great way to configure
apache.

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Evgeny Anisiforov
I could verify getting the same log messages on my system.

This however seems to be not directly related to the problem. I see the
same messages, when testing it on Ubuntu 11.10. But the apache remains
stable and repsonsive on this older version of ubuntu.

I have found some interesting behavior, when using the -k switch with ab to
ensure there are really only the specified amount of processes used and no
process is busy waiting for the connection to close:
$ ab -k -n 5000 -c 999 http://localhost/
all requests will complete without error
$ curl http://localhost/
htmlbodyh1It works!/h1
pThis is the default web page for this server./p
pThe web server software is running but no content has been added, yet./p
/body/html
$ curl http://localhost/
... no answer

so here you can literally see how the connection #1001 (the magic
number, that appeared before) is breaking apache. i think maybe its
some kind of buffer running full?

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load

2012-07-25 Thread Evgeny Anisiforov
I also agree with you, that this feature has medium importance. I think our
install of apache is not very common. We are running mod_php and as a
consequence relying on the prefork modell, because php is not thread safe. Also
please notice that the presented config was changed to maximize
reproducibility. On our production system we have about 700 processes running
the most of the time, but on peak traffic this number rises to 1000-1200
producing the hanging that i have described.
So while systems with such load may be uncommon, the reported problem is still
existing in the real world. Thanks for paying attention to it!

2012-07-25 Thread Adam Gandelman
FYI-

According to flags.py, the metadata endpoint is enabled by default:

cfg.ListOpt('enabled_apis',
default=['ec2', 'osapi_compute', 'osapi_volume', 'metadata'],
help='a list of APIs to enable by default'),

So, on the packaging side we need to ship the filters with both nova-api
and nova-api-metadata (the packages Conflict already due to port
conflicts, anyway).
