Call for testing on Webapps
I made a post to my blog (since this week isn't busy enough!) about the call for testing being opened on webapps. There's a nice set of testcases available that you can help report results on. The technology is very cool, but could use the work of our excellent eyes and experience in helping make sure it works across many different configurations. Don't worry, the call isn't ending this week, so for those of you already testing, make sure you take some time for you before you jump in on this :-) http://www.theorangenotebook.com/2012/07/what-can-webapps-do-help-test-and-see.html Nicholas -- Ubuntu-qa mailing list Ubuntu-qa@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-qa
Wiki Updates
As some of you may have noticed I have been editing our wiki pages again to try and present a better view of how we as a community operate in QA, and ensure the new folks who come along are able to get up to speed quickly and efficiently. To that end I've edited (and will be continuing to do so) the following pages: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/QATracker https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Activities https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Kernel https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Cadence https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/ Additionally, I am attempting to get a FAQ page of sorts setup with phillw's help about the basics of QA -- terms we use, how we operate etc. All of this is intended to help us a community grow. If your interested in writing some documentation, making some video walkthroughs, or have an idea about helping us welcome new folks (even if your new yourself!) please let me know. Thanks everyone! Should we just add those few to our own directory and bypass depending on xubuntu-icon-theme? Comments please. For me it's important, since drawing an icon on a paper and than scanning it, is less work. Yes, but doing it this way avoids all benefits associated with the vector format. Some of the algorithms available have simple shape matching features, but in all likelihood every artifact, pixellation, dither effect, etc. is going to be assigned its own vector, so that the result is less scalable than the original file. The point of retracing the work is so that one has the original natural shapes stored as vectors, independent of the rendering: this allows the shape to be rendered at arbitrary scale and look reasonable. Automatic conversion may initially appear to be less work, but it likely generates a requirement to retouch all the scaled images, which tends to grow to be more work over time. * a single .png file can create multiple .png files during installation (greatly reducing size requirements) (blurred edges on lines are the most obvious of the possible effects). Regarding to the quality, if the original png/jpg is around 900x900 and you use cubic to scale and for the png/jpg best quality, such effects are reduced to a minimum, less noticeable. Sure, and if you choose a target resolution that is an absolute power of 2 of the starting resolution and only work in reduction, most of the lines even look crisp. With vector representation, one can scale indefintely with zero loss due to scaling: one only sees irregularities when either the target format cannot support the number of elements (e.g. drawing a chess set with grooves between squares at 16x16), or there are limitations of the creation medium (e.g. scaling a drawing done at 45x60 cm to A0). To put it differently, a vector representation (such as SVG) attempts to capture the individual strokes, and then renders them to any target, either specific targets (using imagemagick or another tool), or arbitrary targets (such as a 5x5 cm screen region). As such, when generating bitmaps from vector represenations, sufficient information is available to ensure that the artist's intent is preserved regarding hard or soft edges, smooth or jagged curves, etc. A bitmap representation only stores the result of the drawing for a specific size and colour depth, so when scaling, one must estimate the intent of the artist, and compromise accurate represenation of the relative size of elements against the quality of the appearance of the elements. To see the effect of this yourself, take a look through the icons already installed on your computer: try scaling them to various sizes (including upscaling to e.g. 800x800 or so). I suspect you'll find that vector files (from SVG) survive better than bitmaps. -- Emmet HIKORY -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

I would include krita for sure in that item because there has already been at least one user ask for it. This does mean a bit more testing... I will have to try installing some of these extra packages to make sure they run nice with whatever else we have. We will also have to make sure they show up in the right submenu. The vision of our leader is to include enough to get any job done without including every known software in the repo. We also want the user to be able at system install to just install the workflow/area they are interested in.
A privacidade é importante. OpenLDAP? Kerberos? [Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...
I've been duct-taping my way around this issue (and other similar issues) for years. It's terribly kludgy, but it's simple and effective and doesn't break on each upgrade: /etc/init.d/openvpn start while true ; do cp /etc/resolv.conf.good /etc/resolv.conf ; sleep 15 ; done Or something like that, anyway. I actually run 'vpn up' and 'vpn down', but the above is how it deals with having too many cooks in the DNS kitchen. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dhcp3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90681 Title: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc... [Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load
I cannot reproduce this on Debian unstable with either 2.2.22-9 or 2.2.22-1. Wild guess: Do you have a per-user process limit configured in /etc/security/limits.conf ? If no, it would be helpful if you could provide a backtrace of the process that curl connects to and hangs. There is some documentation about how to do that in /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-common/README.backtrace. But the doc is for Debian. For Ubuntu, the installing of the debugging symbols works differently (maybe someone else can provide a pointer). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1028470 Title: apache2+ssl hangs on high load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2/+bug/1028470/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1028470] Re: apache2+ssl hangs on high load
This appears to be legitimate, I was able to reproduce it on an HP cloud instance with the given parameters. The first 1000 actual requests always finish, but after that all fail. I notice these kernel messages: [ 1131.976324] TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 80. Dropping request. Check SNMP counters. But I don't think it is related. I see this as well *sometimes*: [Wed Jul 25 20:20:10 2012] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting But MaxClients is set to 1500 so I'm not sure what that is. The one difference mod_ssl would introduce would be the use of shared memory for statistical gathering. So maybe the stats are running into a shm limit. I tried raising shmall to 4194304, but that just slowed things down a bit, it still fails right at 1000. I also tried raising shmmni to 8192, and that did nothing. Same for doubling shmmax. On comparing strace's with and without mod_ssl enabled, the problem most likely lies with shared memory or semaphore opertaions, which only seem to be happening with mod_ssl. I also tried adjusting the numbers in /proc/sys/kernel/sem but that did not alleviate the problem. Also its worth noting that 1000 processes is inefficient for more reasons than just memory. Context switching at the process level will be far more expensive than a threaded model. For that reason alone I've set this to Medium, as its really just not a great way to configure apache. ** Tags added: precise -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1028470 Title: apache2+ssl hangs on high load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2/+bug/1028470/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I could verify getting the same log messages on my system. This however seems to be not directly related to the problem. I see the same messages, when testing it on Ubuntu 11.10. But the apache remains stable and repsonsive on this older version of ubuntu. I have found some interesting behavior, when using the -k switch with ab to ensure there are really only the specified amount of processes used and no process is busy waiting for the connection to close: $ ab -k -n 5000 -c 999 http://localhost/ all requests will complete without error $ curl http://localhost/ htmlbodyh1It works!/h1 pThis is the default web page for this server./p pThe web server software is running but no content has been added, yet./p /body/html $ curl http://localhost/ ... no answer so here you can literally see how the connection #1001 (the magic number, that appeared before) is breaking apache. i think maybe its some kind of buffer running full?

I also agree with you, that this feature has medium importance. I think our install of apache is not very common. We are running mod_php and as a consequence relying on the prefork modell, because php is not thread safe. Also please notice that the presented config was changed to maximize reproducibility. On our production system we have about 700 processes running the most of the time, but on peak traffic this number rises to 1000-1200 producing the hanging that i have described. So while systems with such load may be uncommon, the reported problem is still existing in the real world. The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository. Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users. If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision. Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance! ** Changed in: openldap (Ubuntu Precise) Status: In Progress = Fix Committed ** Tags added: verification-needed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openldap in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1023025 Title: [SRU] search fail with get_ctrls : controls require LDAPv3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/+bug/1023025/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 488696] Re: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]
The addition to /etc/nsswitch.conf needs to be done either: a) in the nsswitch.conf file shipped by the base-files package, or b) as part of the postinst/postrm scripts of autofs5 This issue also causes failure for users of autosshfs (not packaged for Ubuntu as yet). ** Changed in: autofs5 (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = Confirmed ** Changed in: autofs5 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = High ** Also affects: base-files (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: base-files (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Changed in: base-files (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to autofs5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/488696 Title: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autofs5/+bug/488696/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1021530] Re: [SRU] update to include stable fixes for OVS 1.4
Hi Clint, I followed the instructions here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed) but it's giving me 1.4.0-1ubuntu1 not 1.4.0-1ubuntu1.1 . I guess it hasn't been placed there yet?
