This made me have a look in my settings; I'm using 14.04 though. I have
zero google account showing. Is this because I have not given the
opportunity for that to happen or there has been a change to make it a

Genuine curiosity, I'd love to know if it's a default coming up on [

The most annoying thing
 - the U1 home page still wants you to sign up;
 - the services page still offers all the options for downloading apps.

Has anyone else wondered if perhaps this has not been thought through
properly? Sure, it was nice [ gratefully received] while it existed...
but to discontinue and offer [con?] at the same time time is wrong
gives a bad impression imho.

However, I *do* thank Ubuntu for the free storage whilst it lasted and

The release party often draws some people who get together to chat,
have beer, laugh, recount geeky tales, and celebrate the new release.
Lets do that again. Typically we do that on release day, which for
14.04 is April 17th. Note that Friday after release is a Bank Holiday.

Should we have one in London, and where should we have it?

Now typically, more recently not a huge number of people turn up. It
was suggested by Michelle in the office that we could invite people to
have a drink at the office rather than everyone all trek to a random
rubbish pub somewhere. The side benefit of this is for people who plan
to go away over the Easter weekend can have a quick drink and
disappear rather than make an evening of it. For those who want to
make an evening of it, can find another nearby bar/restaurant after
the office clears out to carry on the merriment.

 Sound like a plan?

Unless you're using Ubuntu One. In which case the release party is

have 12 games installed but have yet to find a search to display them as

Adam,
re your request for recommended service provider as well as the
hardware... [this is my own experience]

I started with and have stuck with 3.
During 10.04 days their supplied dongle worked well.

I have since been upgraded in both GByte allowance and supplied dongle.

Verdict:
- the *original* dongle was good with bog standard 10.04.
- the *current* dongle *is* good with 12.04 [as in -out of the box]

Be wary though, the original won't connect on 12.04, the latest won't
work on 10.04 [kernel drivers difference I think].

If you are on 12.04 ensure [if you go with 3 as your service], that
the dongle is the E367 - if so - no probs... works out of the box.

Overall - whichever of the two I used [whether at home or travelling
around] I never had any difficulty getting a reliable fast [enough]
connection.

[No - I do not work for 3 and have no reason to promote them - other
than the above facts].

Good luck whatever your choice.

It's all really horses for courses and, unfortunately, we don't have

The other problem, of course, is that Linux is a kernel not an

there is a lot that is different too we need to recognise that
most Linux Users are no longer trying to do obscure things from the
command line but are far more likely to be running applications and

Not to mention that if you get a Debian user, a KDE user on another

people not trying to help but rather convert, saying things like that

It's far too much effort for me, to be honest. I would *love* LUGOG

Any ideas anybody could offer as to how one could make a LUG viable in

[ubuntu-uk] It's not always updates that cause problems

2012-07-01 Thread Bill B.
Hi all,
A cautionary tale:

Turned on netbook [Acer Aspire 150] for the first time since a kernel
update.
Got to password screen and performed an immediate catastrophic power off
- as in software risking instant type.

First instinct was battery death. Wrong.
Next instinct was the dreaded damn kernel update caused this.
Pleased to report - those who assume an update causes a fail are often
right - but often wrong.

Real cause? Carrying a netbook in boot of vehicle travelling approx.
1000 miles/week causes vibration.

3rd instinct took over after trying a live cd from usb cd drive failed
in same way - with battery removed, SD backup card removed netbook
running off power pack.

3rd instinct?... Turn the darn thing upside down - give it a few
[stragetically placed] gentle taps to reverse the vehicle vibration
damage and hope its memory had worked loose.
TV repair job, I admit - though I would prefer the phrase get-you-home-
engineering. Netbook is running smooth as a smooth thing in a smooth
world with a smooth population eating smooth food, smoothly.
12.04 survived all the power offs intact, as did Xubuntu 12.04 on other
partition.

When time permits I will get into guts of it and re-seat all
re-seatables - as a good little engineer should ;)

Remember - updates can be a coincidence as well as a cause.

Sorry to be negative, especially where a lot of people obviously did a

Chuck,

thank you for your interest.
bug #44506 is no longer a problem.
i reloaded updated successfully, everything works fine now -
except that when i return after suspend i get a message serious kernel
problem ... might become unstable.
reported as bug #447653, #448834, and joined bug #450711.
also see my two system tests.
a simple restart seems to fix everything.

its wonderful all the hard work you people at canonical do!

[Bug 447689] [NEW] no audio

2009-10-09 Thread bill b
Public bug reported:

one hour and a half , earlier i reported bug #447653, but have corrected by
restart.
everything checks out ok except there isn't any audio.
before i used audacious media player successfully with jaunty.
jaunty by it self gave no audio.
i read a bug report that audacious might be involved with crash of jaunty libc6.
jaunty crashed on me bug #433321.
only corrections that got things going again was to update to karmic kola.
