Re: [Bug 723831] Re: Installer – The option to 'install third-party software' when installing Ubuntu should be selected by default (aka make Youtube work)

2011-03-29 Thread Christopher Swift
Martin, as I understand it the tickbox is indeed optional however at the
same time, such an important feature to the desktop experience and
importance to free software as well isn't a centre of attention. The current
layout makes it appear to be some daft, worthless EULA. In the blog linked,
the installer should have its own page with just the tickbox as an option
and perhaps having a longer description by what advantages and disadvantages
there are to ticking it.

[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization

2010-07-16 Thread Christopher Swift
Trash is a term very rarely used within the United Kingdom. It is very
common to called the items themselves rubbish in such a phrase as
this can belongs in the rubbish. In reference to the folder however,
as wikipedia[0] points out, in place of trashcan the British normally
use the term rubbish bin or more accurately just bin colloquially. It
is much more accurate to call the wastebasket the rubbish bin in regards
to British English translations.

In my humble opinion, there is absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with

I think Anton was saying that it's worse to package binary debian
packages, not debian packages as a whole. We create source packages
which can be uploaded to (for example) launchpad PPAs, and built
(compiled) for multiple architectures including i386, AMD64, LPIA and
ARM. If you build binary packages then the onus is on you to rebuild
 for other architectures.

That is indeed what I meant.
Doing a debian source package allows you to rebuild easily and use the
advanced features available through debian helper scripts.
Creating the folder layouts and using dpkg-deb (or zipping it up
manually) to build *only* the .deb without using the debian
buildscripts may seem simple at first but has serious limitations, not
least rebuilding for another architecture via a PPA or similar

Thank you for reporting this bug. As your report stands the information
given could be a bit thorough if you could help out by doing the
following things it may help us diagnose the bug a bit more accurately.
Can you please run this command and paste the output here. lspci | grep
Network .

Could you please allow let us know what happens if you connect through
the command line as this may help us narrow down on the package
affecting this bug. A guide for this is available at:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-troubleshoot-wireless-network-

Also when refering to the wifi being turned on and off, is this
something that the machine is doing by itself or is it possible that you

[Bug 426110] Re: when i play a video, after few seconds the computer reboot

2009-10-03 Thread Christopher Swift
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. I suspect that it may be useful for you to try to play the
video again without any other programs running. Could you also let us know if
this happens with every video or just certain videos as well.
Thanks!

Yes that is correct, Cardiff Central Library will be host to our

Are you referring to the same article that started this thread? It links
 to here:
 http://www.osnews.com/story/21589/Asus_Microsoft_Launch_Anti-Linux_Netbook_Campaign

Looks like a MS/Asus add to me.

 Al

Yes I am referring to that article and many others on the same topic
:-). There is just one page on entire ASUS web-range that links to that
page over at asus.co.uk and not on any other counterparts. If you ask me
it was a sys-admin who was having a bit of fun and hoped not to be caught.

First off I'll point out the evidence that we have piece-by-piece and I
don't mean to be patronising nor offensive as I do this.

Firstly visit asus.co.uk, it automatically redirects to uk.asus.com. Now
visit the 1008HA's page on what looks like the officially endorsed asus
page for the UK (i.e. utilising the uk.asus.com subdomain). It can be
found here:
http://uk.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=24l2=164l3=0l4=0model=2912modelmenu=1
whereas somehow there is an asus.co.uk page however their index page
redirects to uk.asus.com, the page that I am referring to is here:
http://www.asus.co.uk/eeepc/1008HA/features.html as you can see there is
a reference to this joke marketing site ;-). OK there is an official
domain pointing to the marketing campaign on one of their product's
pages, well I'll be damned if you can find it on a single other ASUS
page, check out this page for example:
http://www.asus.co.uk/eeepc/1000HE/ there is no mention of
itsbetterwithwindows.com ;-).

Now lets take a look at the whois for asus.com:
   Domain Name: ASUS.COM
   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
   Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
   Name Server: DNS3.ASUS.COM
   Name Server: DNS7.ASUS.COM
   Status: clientTransferProhibited
   Updated Date: 29-mar-2007

   US
   Administrative Contact, Technical Contact:
  Yao, Charles charles_...@asus.com
  Asus Computer International
  800 Corporate Way
  Fremont, CA 94539
  US

As you can see ASUS have really put out some details for them to be able
to be contacted and even run their own DNS server for the domain, now
lets look at the itsbetterwithwindows.com whois shall we?

   Domain Name: ITSBETTERWITHWINDOWS.COM
   Registrar: GODADDY.COM, INC.
   Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
   Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com

I'm sorry for the huge email however it can be seen that this
questionable website uses questionable contact info, i.e. it is not even
in the same state as the ASUS domain registree and the contact email is
a hohtmail account using a consumer level hosting account over at
GoDaddy.com :). For clarity the email is rdcpro at [good old] hotmail
dot com. Now try and convince me that ASUS or Microsoft are truly behind
this campaign.

Hi all,

It is time that we have a vote to decide upon a Point of Contact for the
Welsh LoCo team! There is currently a list of candidates[0] who wish to
become the first official PoC of Ubuntu Cymru. At this moment in time,
anyone who wishes to is able to apply themselves to this list with an
introduction and/or manifesto similar to the one that I have written. I
welcome all who wish to apply to become the official PoC of Ubuntu Cymru
and steer us in the right direction towards becoming an official LoCo
community team. However listed below is a number of things that must
be carried out by the PoC (if it interests you becoming one):

 * Produce a team report each month[1], there is one being authored for
April by myself (any contributions welcomed) as we speak/read.
 * Every leader within the Ubuntu community must adhere to the Ubuntu
Leadership Code of Conduct, as well as the standard one. There is no
room for those who cannot stay in-line with these rules.
 * Plan and carry out events throughout Wales (yes all parts of Wales)
including just Bugjams, packaging jams, install fests, release parties,
or even just meeting the face behind the alias sort of meetings.
 * Hold meetings online when a topic comes up or just for ideas on how
to further advance the team.
 * Much much more.

If you are interested then please put your name and some background info
on the wiki[0]. There will be a deadline for applications of Sunday 10th
May where there will be a launchpad vote following on our launchpad
page[3]. The vote will then run for 7 days, i.e. it will finish at
Sunday 17th May. All members are urged to vote.

To: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-cym/+contactuser
CC: British Ubuntu Talk ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com

Hello all, for those of you who don't know me already I'm Chris or ianto
on the Freenode IRC network. Firstly, I'd like to thank all those who
made it or let me know that they couldn't make it due to other
commitments to the release party in Cardiff! We had a low number of
people turning out but when considering the amount of people in this
launchpad team (22), nearly one third (6 in total) was able to make it,
with half of the team giving feedback as to how/why they couldn't
attend. For a team just two months old, well done to all! I hope to in
the future have a bugjam in Wales, North or South I care not as long as
we have an enthusiastic turnout.

I would like to hear your feedback on the Welsh team so far, especially
what mistakes we have made and/or how we can improve it! For example, we
are pretty scattered in that we are found on the Ubuntu forums (as a
group) yet we haven't had an official subforum approved yet, that we
have a mailing lists approved by the Community Councils for a list at
lists.ubuntu.com yet we can currently only really communicate via email
through the launchpad group or hijacking ubuntu-uk's mailing list. Also
a few of us are IRC regulars and then others have never been on IRC, We
need a central medium in which to communicate and when Canonical's
sys-admins have finished our mailing list, I'll let you all know so that
we can subscribe and chat that way, I hope to have an introduction
thread when we start to get acquainted with each other!

What do you want -cym to actually do? Shall we hold meetings at various
venues across Wales (North, South Mid) for stuff like bugjams, release
parties, key-signing and meeting up etc., heck even install fests of
various applications/games/upgrades of Ubuntu. Obviously one of the core
aims of a LoCo such as this one is to provide support to users, so if
one emails our proposed mailing list asking for assistance to install
Ubuntu on their home PC and they have no internet at their homes, we
ought to then either privately email them to acquire their number to do
it over the phone or offer to go over their house (if local) to help
them through it (and still keep hold of their Windows data) should any
difficulties arise. Another key aim is the advocacy and sharing our
knowledge with other people to help increase adoption, especially in
businesses where they price of many Windows license is sometimes too
high (which leads to the pirating of softwares at times). A good thing
also is that we can attend conferences in Wales, a great place to find
such ones is at a site called IT Wales
(http://www.itwales.com/Events.htm), although not always a computer fair
as such they often have good events where you can attend to learn about
current technologies. Obviously contacting said site is going to assist
in finding or promoting technological conferences in which new users
could find it.

To make this email not be taken as an essay, I'll leave it here, can
people who are interested in -cym, could you email back some feedback
via the lp group contact user, to this email address or via the -uk
mailing list.

With many thanks,
Christopher Swift.

I'll check when I am in work tonight when is the earliest time that I

IRC tonight who can take over until the rest of us can get there! I'll
try and get some others to respond on here too so you can see how many

If you're not firewalled, you can utilise Pidgin to connect to IRC as
per our little guide on the wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WelshTeam/IRC .
It is a nice little handy protocol when you get acquainted with it and
use a specialised client such as XChat or irssi in place of Pidgin
(despite what I just said about Pidgin being able to connect).

So I gather that people will pitch as and when but I guess someone
must be the leader or organizer of this whole StarBux party and how
would I know when I pitch where to look for the party, will there be a
banner up inside the StarBux or people with Ubuntu Tshirts... This
will be my first Linux party so I do not know what to expect..

There will be so many different kinds of Ubuntu t-shirts being worn
it'll be unbelievable (I'm only joking ;-) ). You're however bound to
see a few wearing some sort of Linuxy clothing, either hats (I wanted to
get an Ubuntu hat) or t-shirts but that isn't to say that's all that is
stocked in our wardrobes!

My surname started in various places in the world, Scotland, Germany,
Holland, etc... My ancestors came from Holland, I have been all over
UK but originally came from South Africa, Pretoria(+- 30',30' south) 6
years ago and currently live in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

 Thanx
Ah that's very interesting, I've never came across a surname similar to
yours before hence why I asked. I am one of those people who gets
interested by far too much and heritage is one of those things.

I hope this has helped,

[Bug 361411] Re: Save page as problem

2009-04-14 Thread Christopher Swift
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug however it is not a
bug of Ubuntu nor Firefox. The issue lies in the default settings of
Firefox, it auto-saves to the Desktop of the user using Firefox. To
change this go to the Edit toolbar, then Preferences and in that
dialogue window click on Always ask me where to save files and this
should fix your problem.

2009-04-14 Thread Christopher Swift
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

be ironed out. If you require any assistance for attending the meeting
over IRC, there are instructions here for how to join
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WelshTeam/IRC . The language of the meeting will
be in English if you are put off by the name however afterwards idle
channel banter can be in either English, Welsh or whatever language an

There will be logs of the meeting posted after the meeting has finished
to the wiki of WelshTeam.

So if you are in Wales or close to the border or even as far away as
Scotland and wish to attend or just help organise, it would be
appreciated if you could make it tonight, sorry for the short notice! We
will be discussing both Northern and Southern parties depending on the
turnout in IRC.

[ubuntu-uk] Welsh Jaunty Release Party

2009-03-20 Thread Christopher Swift
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello, I am Chris[0], however some may know me as ianto in irc and I am
hoping to organise a release party in Wales. I'm currently in the south
of Wales near Swansea, so I'm thinking of utilising the city of Swansea
as a potential venue however Cardiff is also under consideration as
well as a few other largish settlements in Wales. At the moment, much
isn't planned but topics under discussion are the types of venue: i.e.
should it be a pub, a _real_ party or just somewhere to chat like a
restaurant or something. Also another big detail, is the city as I've
mentioned above. There are however plans being made at the moment by
some Welsh Ubuntueros[1].

If you are in or are able to travel to the south of Wales to meet up
with the Welsh Ubuntu community, then by all means come along when we
finalize things. However I'd like some feedback regarding the venue
choice and location. For example in your opinion would a full on party
be preferable to pub or a restaurant or what sort of venue would you
prefer? Also, how many of you will be definitely able to attend on 25th
April if in Swansea or in Cardiff or even somewhere up North which I
wouldn't mind attending if I save up some money by then for a train fare
:-).

Well I would appreciate your feedback, I look forward to hearing from
you all,

Chris

[Bug 338476] [NEW] [Jaunty] CUPS Cannot Detect Printer

2009-03-05 Thread Christopher Swift
Public bug reported:

After plugin in my HP PSC 1317 Printer, as on other versions of Ubuntu,
cups did not identify and install the correct drivers for the printer.
Somehow it could tell me what model the printer was but not find the
correct drivers. I've been able to add them via the manual method of
searching for my printer however and printing works fine.

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04
cups:
  Installed: 1.3.9-14ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1.3.9-14ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1.3.9-14ubuntu2 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

If any more information is including, feel free to request it.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] A relatively quick £100 for anyone i n London who can do this

2009-02-24 Thread Christopher Swift
Don't worry Rowan, you didn't hurt anyone at London bugjam's feelings, at
least from what I could see anyway! If you had emailed one of us in private,
I and/or others would've happily came around to help you out. Unfortunately
now however I am back in Wales and thus cannot attend London to help fix
things however there are a few Ubuntu-UK users in London on this mailing
list. What I and some others found to be a bit odd was the £100 offer and
hence why I didn't personally persue it any further. Many of us here, from
my past experience, would happily help you out for free as this is what our
understanding of Free Software is supposed to be about, in part, the help
share with others freely. I'm sure that soon someone many volunteer to help
out who is in London.

With kind regards,
Chris.

2009/2/24 Rowan rowan.berke...@googlemail.com

 I hope I didn't hurt people's feelings by sounding as if I couldn't be
bothered to condescend to come to your Bug Jam. The fact is, although I
am a bit reluctant to mention it, that I am semi-disabled. I mean, I can
walk around like other people, but it hurts. I have sciatica.

Anyway, the offer stands. But it won't be a complete piece of cake,
because I really want anyone who agrees and is able to do this to not
just recompile the driver and install the DKMS, but also to show me how
to use the DKMS in case of future update conflicts, and give the thing a
general once-over to ensure there are no other non-default ubuntu
software modules lurking in there. I have asked the suppliers for this
information, too, so I may be able to cross-check this.

to help you.

2009/2/22 Rowan rowan.berke...@googlemail.com

As I have explained, I have a brand new machine with ubuntu
pre-installed, which was assembled in the USA. A kernel update caused
the driver to become inoperable because it is not the default driver
expected by the update. I am trying to find someone in London who for a
fee of say £100 will undertake to recompile the driver, and also to
install the utility called DKMS, which is apparently able to monitor and
control these conflicts. Anyone in London who wants to earn a relatively

This is a safety issue that your hardware is enabling. This is because
your hardware will reset itself if it gets too hot. The best course of

fridge, place more fans inside or use thermal cooling paste.

[Bug 327032] Re: Jabra BT125 Doesn't Work

2009-02-21 Thread Christopher Swift
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

anyone wants a copy? If you want a copy and you are in London just lemme
know and I'll prepare the ISOs ready on my thumb-drive for you. I also
obviously have the Ubuntu 8.10 Live-CD i386 ISO if anyone needs a copy of
that too.

 Hi everyone,

The bug jam is almost upon us.

I realised that it will be important to have lots of live cds,
so bring any you have. Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty (especially Jaunty,
latest alpha or daily), and Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.

 Thanks,

 James

2009-01-23 Thread Christopher Swift
Hello Norbert, I will be willing to work with you on this project. Join
#ubuntu-motu on the Freenode IRC network sometime and search for Chris`.
From what I've seen, the packaging (of the older versions) is a bit more
advanced than some of my other packages but I will be willing to contribute
too.
Have you seen the packaging videos by Daniel Holbach yet? They have some
good information for packaging in them.

 Hi,
I haven't contributed anything to Ubuntu before (besides a few bug
reports) but I'd be willing to maintain packaging of the CrossWire
software for Ubuntu and Debian, in the sense of updating the concerned
packages whenever a new upstream version comes out, fixing any
 packaging bugs, etc.

 I'm aware of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/GettingStarted and
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debian/ForUbuntuDevelopers and intend to try
 just following the instructions. :-)

If someone else is also interested in working on this, I certainly
wouldn't mind being part of a team effort...

Hey, I always stick odd USB devices into Linux first to check them out.
For background info, this photo frame does nothing when first
connected. You can set it to transfer mode, at which point it
emulates a USB CD-ROM of 304 Kbyte size. That CD image tries to
autorun the DPFmate software to compress and transfer images to the
device. The photos are *not* visible on the device through normal
access, must have transferred them to a hidden area. I'd be interested
if anyone has more info on the USB protocols used.

 Cheers,
 Al.
