Re: [ubuntu-uk] e-books without Adobe Digital Editions
Hi, This isn't a complete answer to your question but have you tried Project Gutenberg? http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page They are a public domain, ie free, repository of e-books. Re: [ubuntu-uk] (no subject)
The only way I found to integrate Google Calendar into the top-right Calendar in Gnome was to use Evolution. You have to install a Google Calendar plugin to Evolution[1] and sync you calendar. Then it appears auto-magically in the top right. This runs in the background all the time (ie you don't have to open Evolution for it to sync events). I found it easier to edit it through the browser than through the plugin but both worked. Ciarán 1. http://code.google.com/soc/2007/gnome/appinfo.html?csaid=752B5B84A5A50C80 Personally I've found a paper diary much more useful, even if I forget it sometimes. I can always write down events and sync them later. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Fwd: [Brighton-lug-misc] Free UNIX shell account
Hi, Keeping an IRC client (irssi) and other stuff open 24/7 in an instance of screen. Ah, so you are able to install stuff? Apart from the fact their Terms and Conditions explicitly state that don't allow that (Our) definition of a background process would be any process that is detached/nohup'd and stays running after you log out. Example: starting screen, starting irssi and logging out. Not cool. HOWEVER, note that we do not have a problem with you running screen with multiple windows, while staying connected to our servers. We are not crazy overlords and want you to be able to work in peace. http://devio.us/policy Ciarán -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Audio Conversion: WAV to WMA
Hi, Having to keep files in multiple formats for devices that didn't support free formats was a big pain for me. The only solution was to wait until the smallest excuse to get a portable audio player that supported FLAC and OGG. This has made my life much easier. I recommend an iAudio 7, not the best device but its a reasonable price, with large storage and long battery life. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Using a bluetooth headset

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Possible Training Events
Hi, Python for Nonprogrammers session. Bit of a bring a laptop and have a go type thing. Brilliant idea! I had lots of trouble trying to start programming and still struggle now. Most of the courses I have attended or guides I have read have been very much aimed at Computer Scientists with language and structure that they are familiar with. Coming from a non-CS background this was all gobbldy-gook until I had a go. I suggest that you come up with a simple task to complete though. Even something like count the works in a sentence or count the numbers of the in a paragraph this teaches some very basic stuff that is assumed knowledge in other tutorials. [ubuntu-uk] GRUB Error 17 and UUID
Hi, I have set up a machine to boot from a USB flash disk into Ubuntu Jaunty, the computer has Windows XP install on the main hard disk. It is a university computer, so I am not really at liberty to install Ubuntu permanently on the hard drive but I think booting from a USB stick is allowed. From a cold boot (not a restart) the machine will automatically search for USB devices to boot from first and GRUB is started. However it will always result in an Error 17, unless I boot to the Windows log in screen first, restart, and then it will boot from USB again but this time find the hard disk. I have a feeling the UUID is not set when GRUB starts so it cannot find the USB stick it is actually installed on. Once Windows has assigned a UUID then after a warm boot (restart) from Windows the UUID sticks and I can boot Ubuntu. I can restart from Ubuntu too as many times as I want, just can't do a complete shutdown. Is there a solution to this, I've tried looking on forums etc, but this seems to be a fairly obscure problem. If you require any more information (lspc etc) please ask. Regards, Ciarán -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Evolution's compulsory GPG routine
Hi, What you describe sounds more like the Gnome Keyring rather than any GPG-based program. They keyring is what stores your passwords etc, it is used for WEP/WPA keys along with any other password in the system. I'm guessing that you have passwords in Evolution to your email accounts etc, and these are protected by the Gnome Keyring application. Evolution has to request access in someway to be able to download your email. This is a guess, hope it points you in the right direction. [ubuntu-uk] Free (Broken) LCD Screen
Hi, I had an LCD screen go on me. It's a 19 generic LCD that worked fine right up until it wouldn't display any images. It has DVI and VGA. I suspect the backlight has gone and may be an easy fix for someone. If you want it send me an email off list otherwise it will be taken to the tip in a few weeks. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Free (Broken) LCD Screen
Thanks for the suggestion, however I've already bought a new monitor! Just to clarify, the monitor turns on, and there is an LED that responds to the DVI/VGA input, ie it changes colour when it goes to sleep mode, and changes back to green when you wiggle the mouse. So there is hope. Forgot to mention that I'm in Birmingham. Regards, Ciarán -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Setting up shared folders using samba
Hi, I don't have it either. Although you can get the app by opening it from the terminal. gksudo shares-admin Or you can share folders individually by right clicking on them and selecting Sharing options. This will install all the nessessary packages if they are not already present. Hope that helps. I'm curious, what's a Macbook 3.1? I haven't heard a Macbook referred to like that before. Re: [ubuntu-uk] remote accessing an ubuntu machine (vnc or similar)
Well that's lucky! I'm not sure how related OpenSSL and OpenSSH are though. To be honest don't get frustrated if you can't figure out what to do. I find it very confusing, but I've just about got my head around it. Re: [ubuntu-uk] remote accessing an ubuntu machine (vnc or similar)
Well ssh is the easy bit! I always got confused with setting up the ssh tunnel on the machine you were sitting at. I think I've got it now though. The actual setting up of OpenSSH and VNC on the remote machine was easy. It's connecting to the damn things though firewalls and stuff! Ciarán On 3/31/09, doug livesey biot...@gmail.com wrote: Apparently OpenSSH uses OpenSSL extensively -- that's what me book says, anyway. Probably not on any level that I'll ever need to know about, though. I use SSH at work (in a safe environment), so once I've got it set up, at least I'll be familiar with the easy bits. 2009/3/31 Ciarán Mooney general.moo...@googlemail.com Well that's lucky!
