[Bug 960757] Re: whoopsie crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_newv()

2012-03-23 Thread Evan Dandrea
If you're experiencing this bug, please upgrade to whoopsie 0.1.23 and
report back here on whether or not you're still seeing whoopsie crashes.

To be clear, whoopsie crashes are ones that have Package: whoopsie in
the Show Details section.

[Bug 959308] Re: kvm does not generate a system uuid by default

2012-03-22 Thread Evan Dandrea
Serge,

The caller here is all our end users.

I'd like to argue for carrying a patch against upstream. All the other major
virtual machines set a system UUID by default:
- VirtualBox: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch08.html#idp12395280 (search
for hardwareuuid)
- VMWare:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_UScmd=displayKCexternalId=1541
- Parallels: http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=32400

Microsoft requires it for Logo Certification, as I understand it.

I can't imagine it doing any harm. I suspect there are countless more
things in the wild depending on one being set than there are ones
expecting a NULL value.

[Bug 658865] Re: Install from USB fails: An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed

2012-03-20 Thread Evan Dandrea
Thanks for the pointers, Klass.

Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce this with unetbootin 494 and an Ubuntu
10.10 CD.

Would someone who is still experiencing this bug please do the following:
1) Boot the USB disk created by unetbootin 494 (or whatever tool you used -
just be sure to mention it here) and select Try Ubuntu.
2) Open a terminal and edit /usr/lib/ubiquity/apt-setup/generators/40cdrom as
root (sudo gedit /usr/lib/ubiquity...)
3) Put 'set -x' just below the 'set -e' line. Save the file.
4) Run the installer until it crashes.
5) Run `sudo apport-collect ubiquity`. This will attach the needed debugging
information to this bug report. Also write here which tool you used and what
Ubuntu version you used. Please do not follow up to this report simply to say
that you tried installing without these steps and it did not work.

Thanks!

[Bug 775124] Re: Ubiquity should have a command line option to override the free space check

2012-03-19 Thread Evan Dandrea
As discussed during the installer virtual sprint, one option is to
establish a size whereby disks smaller than this should automatically
override the space check, provided that they have enough space (plus a
small amount) for the contents of the installation.

The rationale was that if a disk is smaller than the minimum size check
but still large enough to hold the installation, we shouldn't get in the
users way, provided that attempting the install wont hit -ENOSPC.

[Bug 775124] Re: Ubiquity should have a command line option to override the free space check

2012-03-19 Thread Evan Dandrea
For what it's worth, the fudge factor is there not as a workaround, but
because we do not want users creating an Ubuntu installation that is
only just big enough to contain the system files. We should ensure they
have enough room to be able to use the operating system, including
storing documents, music, and downloads, for the life of the
installation.

[Bug 784362] Re: I can not install Ubuntu

2012-03-19 Thread Evan Dandrea
I'm afraid that without log files we cannot fix whatever caused the
installation to crash. For future reference, please run `sudo ubuntu-
bug ubiquity` in a terminal window if the installation crashes. This
will automatically collect the needed information and attach it to a new
bug report.

It is not technically possible for the Ubuntu installer to prevent you
from accessing the BIOS setup. Do pay close attention to the keyboard
shortcuts it presents when you first turn on the computer. BIOS setup is
usually F1, escape, or F12.

If you are unable to boot Windows, please follow the instructions found here:

2012-03-19 Thread Evan Dandrea
I cannot reproduce this bug with a 10.10 USB disk created in usb-
creator.

I've started to poke around the other tools people are using in this
bug, in the event that these are doing something out of spec. It looks
like unetbootin is dropping 0-byte files whenever it encounters a
symlink. This may be a red herring, however, as I cannot make apt-cdrom
from precise blow up under such conditions. I'll try again tomorrow
with 10.10's version.

[Bug 196172] Re: Automatic bug reporting not so automatic

2012-03-15 Thread Evan Dandrea
** Description changed:

+ Apport or whoopsie could use a setting for automatically sending a crash
+ to the database without any user interaction.
+
+
+ As there was some confusion around this particular point, users will not be
directed to report a Launchpad bug post-release unless they have apport enabled
in /etc/apport/default. They will, however, still see crash reporting dialogs.
+
+ Original report follows:
+
  The automatic bug reporting is not so automatic.

  When an application crashes, it triggers Apport to run.
  It asks the user if he wants to submit a bug report, and the user can select
yes or no. (Good)

  However, when the user clicks on the Send bug report button, it opens
  the web browser and redirects him over here to bugs.launchpad.net

  Most (especially new) users, don't want to bother register an account on
  the website and enter a description.

  If an application crashes and they're asked two choices Report crash or
Don't report crash, many will click on the Report crash if it causes no
personal inconvenience, effort or loss of time for them.
  But non-technical users, don't want to report it, if it brings up a website
where they need to register an account and enter a description.

  So I propose to make it so the user can quickly send a bug report
  without inconvenience, effort or time, by just pressing a button, and it
  sends it without the user have to have an account or type anything.

[Bug 948851] [NEW] Apport should only use the blacklist to consider whether or not to send a report to Launchpad.

2012-03-07 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Apport uses /etc/apport/blacklist.d to determine whether or not it
should create a crash file for the program that just died. Currently,
this blacklist contains Firefox and Thunderbird.

This is now insufficient for two reasons:
- It offers not explanation for why the application window just disappeared.
- We actually want to collect these crashes in the crash database, regardless
of whether or not they can be retraced.

I propose we check this blacklist only before attempting to send crashes
to Launchpad, after we've potentially marked it to be sent to the crash
database.

 excessively high price for telling you the name of the program.

Hi Martin,

From your perspective and given the solution Matthew presents above,
is it sufficient to make this change and leave the rest of the current
behavior as-is? That is, the UI is hidden and the process spins away
in the background, continuing to collect the additional information
and then quitting. Or would you prefer to see something that
communicates to the thread that it needs to commit suicide at this
point?

Re: [Bug 913694] Re: [MIR] whoopsie-daisy

2012-02-14 Thread Evan Dandrea
On Fri, Feb 10, 2012 at 4:19 PM, Jamie Strandboge ja...@ubuntu.com wrote:
 I spent quite a bit of time looking at whoopsie and overall I think it
 looks to be in pretty good shape, but needs some updates (see below).

Thank you so much for this comprehensive review.

 * get_crash_db_url(): needs to verify the url. Granted, it should be
 tightly controlled via the initscript or the root user, but still.

Verified how? I could ensure there's an http:// on the front and a NUL
terminator on the end, but beyond that I'm unsure what else we could
do.

 * get_system_uuid():
  * should check return of open() call

Done (r147).

  * http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gcrypt/Initializing-the-
library.html states that gcry_check_version() should be used for a
number of reasons, not least of which to initialize 'some subsystems'

Done (r148).

  * intially surprised that you disabled secure memory, but I guess
since this is a root process the contents of
/sys/class/dmi/id/product_uuid shouldn't leak out

Is that really sensitive information to begin with? It's the system
UUID. I can't envision an attack vector that involves it.

I'm happy to remove the call to disable secure memory, if you'd prefer
though. I don't mind either way.

  * sha512 should be verified as != NULL after gcry_md_open() and fail

Done (r148).

  * gcry_md_read () can return NULL. The circumstance is covered by the
code but check for != NULL is easy and future proof.

Done (r149).

  * while you are careful with calculating md_len, it would be easier to
 maintain if sha512_system_uuid was not set to 129 explicitly. Not a security
 issue. Perhaps doing:

     #define HASHLEN 128
     static char sha512_system_uuid[HASHLEN+1] = {0};
     ...
     if (md_len != HASHLEN)
         exit (EXIT_FAILURE)

 Like I said, the math is right now, but if something changes in the code
 you could have a stack buffer overflow in hex_to_car when writing to buf
 (get_system_uuid)

Seems reasonable enough. Done (r150) with the minor alteration of
checking for HASHLEN / 2.

 * dropprivileges(): drops to 'whoopsie' user and looks fine except
 setenv should check the return codes

Done (r151).

 Then I looked a bit at the non-root parts and found:
 * can DoS whoopsie by creating /tmp/.whoopsie-lock. Also symlink race. Move
 to /var/lock/whoopsie instead (which has whoopsie write). Maybe easier to
 just pass O_EXCL and check open() does not return -1. This would not allow
 for the helpful error message though

Is it really a symlink race if it doesn't write to the file?

The problem I see is that if it just uses open and O_CREAT | O_EXCL,
if something goes terribly wrong and whoopsie never removes
/var/lock/whoopsie, no further instances can be started.

Made the change to use /var/lock/whoopsie in r152.

 * daemonize():
  * umask(0) call usually before fork, but should be fine

Done anyway (r153).

  * should close open file descriptors for future proofing. Ie, before fork
 use getrlimit(RLIMIT_NOFILE,rl) and then after the chdir, use something like
 (this means you can drop the 3 close(STD...) calls):
    for (i=0;irl.rlim_max  i1024;i++)
      close(i)
    can lose the 3 close(STD...) calls then

Done (r154).

  * should also attach stdin, stdout and stderr to /dev/null with something
 like:
    fd0 = open(/dev/null, O_RDWR);
    fd1 = dup(0);
    fd2 = dup(0);
    openlog(...)
    if (fd0 != 0 || fd1 != 1 || fd2 != 2) {
        syslog(...);
        exit (EXIT_FAILURE);
    }

Done (r155).

 * upload_to_crash_file: please explicitly NULL terminate crash_file. Eg:
   crash_file = malloc (len + 7); /* .crash */
   memcpy (crash_file, upload_file, len);
   strcpy (crash_file + len, .crash);
   crash_file[len+6] = '\0'; /* ensure NULL-terminated */

Done (r156).

 * I spent quite a bit of time desk checking parse_report() and it seems to
 dtrt when faced with valid input, however it has some problems with invalid
 input. I was able to create some weird key/value pairs as well as segfault
 whoopsie with just a little bit of effort. Since /var/crash is
 world-writable, need to be careful about the files it processes
  * should only process regular files in /var/crash
  * should not follow symlinks

Given that /var/crash is world writable, why does this matter? Just
trying to understand what I'm defending against.

I've made the change in r157, but I'm not sure how I could restructure
it to prevent a time of check to time of use attack. Suggestions
welcome there.

  * should perform input validation on keys and values

 I wrote some test cases to demonstrate the problem and will attach the

 Verified in a manner that will allow whoopsie to fail gracefully when
 faced with invalid input. Checking for http:// or https:// and is nul
 terminated is probably good enough, since this is administrator
 controlled.

Fixed in r167.

 Is that really sensitive information to begin with? It's the
 systemUUID. I can't envision an attack vector that involves it.

 Well, this was more of a thought provoking comment than a firm
 recommendation. The file is only accessible by root, but I couldn't
 really think of an attack vector that would expose this via whoopsie
 where the user was non-privileged that didn't require physical presence.
 I might not have been creative enough, but it is easy enough to remove
 later if needed.

Sure. Paranoia wins here :). I've removed the call to disabling secure
memory (r165).

 Hmm, well, /var/lock also has 1777 permissions, so this didn't address
 the issue. What I meant was create the directory /var/local/whoopsie,
 and put your lock file in there. Doing this is enough to fix both the
 TOCTOU and the DoS.

Done (r166).

 Given that /var/crash is world writable, why does this matter? Just
 trying to understand what I'm defending against.

 Because it is world writable, people can put anything they want in there
 and whoopsie could process it. As such, whoopsie needs to be coded
 defensively since it is processing untrusted and unfiltered content.
 While is is excellent that whoospie is running as non-root at this
 point, we still want to make sure that it handles invalid input
 gracefully such that whoopsie won't crash or be subverted into executing
 arbitrary code. I'm not sure I understand the TOCTOU you are referring
 to here-- we just want parse_report() to fail gracefully in the presence
 of invalid input. Once it is uploaded to the server, the server will of
 course need to do its own input validation.

Apologies for being unclear, I was asking why it matters from a
security perspective whether whoopsie is following symlinks or reading
from block devices when /var/crash is world writable and any user can
feed it anything they so desire (read-only and as a regular user, of
course).

The TOCTOU I mentioned is that presumably an attack could replace a
regular file in /var/crash with a symlink between the calls to
g_file_test and g_mapped_file_new.

 I was not clear here. I was trying to say that the policykit parts were
 done correctly. Sorry for the confusion.

No worries!

[Bug 905754] Re: Israel is not on the installer map

2012-01-25 Thread Evan Dandrea
Colin,

We have population weight in the geonames.org data, so it's a
possibility for Internet-connected installs.

I had a look through the code, and while there used to be functionality
to go to the next closest location on multiple clicks in the same
*exact* area (we should expand this to a small radius), this was dropped
when we picked up the C port of the timezone map.

Part of fixing this bug should be adding that functionality back. I
also chatted with Matthew Paul Thomas about making the ability to do
this a bit more obvious, but neither of us had any good ideas there.

[Bug 913694] Re: [MIR] whoopsie-daisy

2012-01-18 Thread Evan Dandrea
Okay, whoopsie-daisy 0.1.3 is ready for review.

The daemon now drops privileges and all capabilities, except for
CAP_FOWNER. Keeping CAP_FOWNER allows it to ignore the sticky bit in
/var/crash and remove the .upload files, which are created by regular
users to indicate that a crash report should be submitted. It limits
this capability to just /var/crash by bind-mounting / read-only in
/var/tmp, then bind-mounting /var/crash read-write on top of it, and
finally chrooting into this. It does all of this in a separate mount
namespace.

I've moved away from NetworkManager to GNetworkMonitor. This removes
the need to pass the at_console check, and affords us an easy way to
check if the crash submission server is accessible.

[Bug 913694] Re: [MIR] whoopsie-daisy

2012-01-13 Thread Evan Dandrea
I've fixed the +junk branch and production comment in trunk (now lp
:whoopsie-daisy). Do hold off on the security review, as I have changes
in trunk to drop privileges and read the system UUID, amongst other
things.

I've been holding off on uploading these. Dropping privileges breaks
communication with Network Manager, as that has an at_console DBus
security setting. Also, the permissions on /var/crash are such that an
unprivileged user will not be able to read the crash files. I'd like to
solve this by making it +r for the whoopsie group.

I'll let you know via this bug report when I have something ready for
the security review.

Cheers!

Michael,

Indeed, I have a note in the code about using that when it's in the
archive (at the time, it wasn't). I'll give it another look.

[Bug 914849] [NEW] Setting the hostname to ubuntu reports an error

2012-01-11 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

If you set the hostname to ubuntu on the user setup page, an error
message will appear explaining that hostname already exists on the
network. This is because ubuntu maps to the loopback address. We
should filter out hosts entries.

Public bug reported:

Main inclusion request for whoopise-daisy, the Ubuntu crash database

No violations in MainInclusionRequirements. The package is maintained
by a Canonical employee and is native to the Ubuntu archive. This
software is necessary to implement

[Bug 876169] Re: live Ubuntu CD runs but won't install/run on Hard drive

2011-10-17 Thread Evan Dandrea
This looks like a bug in the installer itself, rather than a problem
with the hard drive. Looking at the log files you've attached, there
doesn't appear to be an errors related to the disk (you'd see read
errors if there was).

Can you describe in more detail the steps you took, and at what point
the installer crashed?

Thanks!

[Bug 876298] [NEW] [MASTER] We need to better handle external payloads (Flash, msttcorefonts) not being available.

2011-10-17 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

At the 11.10 release archive.canonical.com collapsed under heavy load
and started returning 503 errors. This caused the flash package to be
unable to grab its payload and thus caused the package to fail, which in
turn caused the installation to fail.

The current plan is to add metadata to a package where it can add a URL
to retrieve its data, so ubiquity and apt-get --download-only can cache
it. We also need a way to queue up package installation post-install,
for when we commit to installing flash but cannot do so due to network
issues, or when the user wishes to have full language support post-
install.
