[Bug 889660] Re: PROBLEM: Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7340 reboots during shutdown

2012-04-01 Thread Jake
Is anyone still working on this? This also causes issues with
sleep/hibernate.

Also, just to clarify the issue for anyone looking into it, the
automatic reboot only happens when the power adapter is connected and
plugged in - if it's unplugged or not connected (running off the battery
only) shutdown is normal, but if it's plugged in the machine reboots
both with and without the battery connected.

[Bug 835972] Re: after resume the Disconnected - you are now offline notification doesn't disappear

2012-02-14 Thread Jake Tolbert
As a workaround in Gnome 3, you can install/run gnconf-editor and
navigate to apps/nm-applet and turn off disconnected notifications.

It's a bit of a kludge, as you won't get useful notifications (ie. when
your network drops), but it's better than having to click the thing
every time you open your laptop lid.

[Bug 829346] Re: Xorg freeze after standby

2012-02-12 Thread Jake Lynn
This problem happens to me rather often in 11.04 and I would like to add a few
details that people seem to have missed. Often when I try to resume and the
screen remains blank I have discovered that it is ONLY blank and the log in
window is actually there like normal and I can type my password to get in, I
just have to do it blind. The screen comes back up after that. Other times it
doesn't work however, but once I seem to recall the screen coming up and
finding my password typed out a few times in gEdit as if it simply took a
little while for the screen to come back.

[Bug 875539] Re: Not starting automatically (/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.DisplayManager.conf missing)

2011-11-22 Thread Jake LeMaster
This seems to be a gdm package bug. Before installing gdm, my
/etc/X11/default-display-manager file contains:
/usr/sbin/lightdm

After installing gdm, the file contains:
/usr/sbin/gdm

After uninstalling gdm, the file contains:
lightdm

And now lightdm doesn't start on boot. If you fix it back to
/usr/sbin/lightdm, it works again.

This fixed the issue for people here too:

 Hey jake-mcgregor,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric

and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
 close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll

your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

I think this bug has been indirectly fixed now, maybe by someone else making
Unity more stable. I have just checked for the bug and it seems to be gone,
so I think it can be closed now. Also, I know this is for bugs, but I think
that there needs to be some more features for having a cube desktop. I have
Gnome setup with 6 desktops, with the desktops rotating when the mouse
approaches the edge. I would love to see this ability in Unity, where there
is a place to select what desktop you want (an app on the taskbar) but since
Unity doesn't use a bottom taskbar or allow app icons to be placed on the
taskbars (another feature worth adding), or even a clear way of adding or
subtracting desktops, I am stuck with editing the registry if I want more
desktops. Overall the setup for adding a cube desktop isn't very easy to
setup and it would be cool if that could be changed. Just a thought. By the
way, is there a place I can send comments like this to the Ubuntu developers?
Let me know what your think.

[Bug 860153] [NEW] [HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook PC, Conexant CX20549 (Venice), Speaker, Internal] volume slider problem - Volume setting not saved on reboot

2011-09-26 Thread Jake
Public bug reported:

On previous versions, the volume setting would be saved so that the
sound level on reboot was the same as when the computer was shut down.
This is not occurring for me in Oneiric.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Lower volume (I go to about 10% or so).
2) Shut down computer.
3) Restart.

On restart, the volume has been reset to the 'default' level (about
80%). It should restart at ~10% where it was when shut down.

Use case: Laptops or business computers. This behaviour can be very
disruptive in a public or office environment.

Volume settings are maintained on logout/login if the computer is not
rebooted. I have not tested this from 'suspend'.

[Bug 860153] Re: [HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook PC, Conexant CX20549 (Venice), Speaker, Internal] volume slider problem - Volume setting not saved on reboot

2011-09-26 Thread Jake
Okay, a fix was posted in the forums while I was reporting this.
Deleting the hidden folder .pulse in the user's home directory seems
to fix the problem.

I'm not sure if this was a problem created during the upgrade from Natty
or something that would happen on a fresh install, but it might be
something for the upgrade-tool team to look at. It worked correctly in
Natty, which was a clean install. I'll leave the status for the devs to
decide.

The solution was found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1850188

Public bug reported:

I installed ubuntu 11.04 from a CD. When installation was complete,
the CD does not show up under computer devices. It shows the hard
drive, floppy, and file system but no CD. If I press the eject button
on the CD, the CD drive immediately appears once it is ejected. If I
push it back in, it disappears! I cannot load anything. Help!

[Bug 789009] [NEW] package phpmyadmin 4:3.3.10-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 1

2011-05-27 Thread Jake Mays
Public bug reported:

The first time I went to install the package, it hung on preconfiguring

I XKilled the process for the Package Manager, then restarted it and

[Bug 785788] [NEW] Guide for Data Recovery valid only older version of Ubuntu

2011-05-20 Thread Jake
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The Guide for Data Recovery
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery#Imaging a damaged device,
filesystem or drive , in the first paragraph states that this guides
applies to Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10 and 8.04. Is that true or does it apply
also 11.04 Natty or is the page quite outdated?

[Bug 781956] [NEW] Compiz tweaking crashed new gui

2011-05-12 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

Just after a network upgrade from 10.10, the GUI worked fine, at least

[Bug 550532] Re: ** (emacs:5902): CRITICAL **: murrine_style_draw_box: assertion `height = -1' failed

2011-05-08 Thread Jake
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 538499 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538499

Holy Cow!! I'm like brand new to Linux (maybe 6 wks now) and I did that
and it did work for me. Specifically the error I got was not precisely
identical. Mine was: ** (emacs:[b]29944[/b]): CRITICAL **:
murrine_style_draw_box: assertion `height = -1' failed This would be
displayed the terminal right when launching emacs23

In case another super newbie, like myself, stumbles upon this I'll write
out what I did exactly - perhaps it will help someone in the future. I
don't know how many times I wished someone would spell it out for me
like this.

After navigaging to each folder respectively, I made sure to make a copy
of the original two files - just in case(located where Christian Pietsch
says in post #3).

Synopsis: Navigate to the directory, make a copy of the original file,
open the regular file (not the copy) with nano, edit the entry, save and
close. Repeat for the second one.

Navigate to the location of the first file using:

[Code] cd /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/ [/Code]

You must log in as root to make any changes to either of these files.
These file are owned by root and you will not be allowed to do anything
with them without doing that.

[Code] sudo -s [/Code]

Enter password when prompted and push enter.

Then make a copy of the file just in case anything goes wrong. You'll
have it to go back to but you would have to rename it to the original
name for it to work. The cp command is used for this (only necessary
if something were to go wrong and you needed to make things back the way
they were).

So make a copy using:

[Code] cp gtkrc gtkrc.old [/Code]

then

[Code] nano gtkrc [/Code]

This opens the file in a text editor called nano

Once in nano press: ctrl+w (this alows you to enter a term to search in
nano). Enter GtkRange::trough-under-steppers (without the quotes) and
press enter.

Navigate to the end of this line and change the 0 to 1 as Alf says in
post #2.

Press ctrl+x. You will be prompted to save the changes - press y. Press
enter. This saves the changes to the file and exits nano.

Now on to the second file . . .

Navigate to the location of the second file using:

[Code] cd /usr/share/themes/Radiance/gtk-2.0/ [/Code]

Make a copy using:

[Code] cp gtkrc gtkrc.old [/Code]

then

[Code] nano gtkrc [/Code]

This opens the file in a text editor called nano

Once in nano press: ctrl+w (this alows you to enter a term to search in
nano). Enter GtkRange::trough-under-steppers (without the quotes) and
press enter.

Navigate to the end of this line and change the 0 to 1 as Alf says in
post #2.

Press ctrl+x. You will be prompted to save the changes - press y. Press
enter. This saves the changes to the file and exits nano.

type:

[Code] exit [/Code]

This exits root (logs you out of it)

type:

[Code] exit [/Code]

closes the terminal (unless you still need it).

Hope it might help someone in the future. I'm stoked! First time I ever
did something like that. Woo Hoo!

:)

[Bug 751851] Re: kate missing hightlighting

2011-04-11 Thread Jake
Since I upgraded from 10.10 I wasn't sure if some kde config files in my
home directory were the issue from older version of kate. So I moved
~/.kde somewhere else. That didn't help.

I also created a new user to see if it would perhaps work, but it still
was not working.

The highlighting files do load/parse properly and things that are auto-
detected properly highlight nicely, you just don't see them under
ToolsHighlighting.

[Bug 751851] [NEW] kate missing hightlighting

2011-04-05 Thread Jake
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

In the Tools menu highlighting exists, but it does not drop into its
submenu with all the types of highlighting available. Also, you can add
the highlighting button to your toolbar, but it also does not dropdown
into a list of languages that you can do highlighting for.

I would expect a list of languages that kate can do highlighting for
under ToolsHighlighting to appear so I can choose which highlighting
style to use when it does not auto-detect the correct style.

[Bug 630512] Re: nautilus location bar no longer recognizes ~ as /home/username

2011-01-25 Thread Jake Tolbert
Just updated from maverick-proposed. The test seems to be working great.
If I run into any other problems with it, I'll post further--for now, it
seems to be working great.

Great work, very much appreciated here.

[Bug 413357] Re: file-roller An error occurred while adding files to the archive.

2011-01-18 Thread Jake Tolbert
To add to this bug, when I get this error, it's unclear which
compression job caused it--the dialog provides no feedback as to what
archive file I was trying to create when I received it.

Often, I'll start 2 or 3 compression jobs at once--if I receive this
error after they've all completed, I have no way of knowing which
file/compression job caused the error.

A simple bit of feedback in the error dialog would be extremely helpful
here, something to the effect of Error while trying to create
backup.tar.gz: some files cannot be added to the archive.

Show stopper for me as well. Workarounds are appreciated, but kludgy.
Seems it's also being worked here:

With a couple updates but no fix yet.

[Bug 665546] Re: Drop and sub menus don't always show up

2010-12-15 Thread Jake Shorelan
I attached apport info above. I too am experiencing this problem.
Often a menu will highlight when I click on it, but the contents will
not appear. I can click several times with no effect. Sometimes
adjacent menus also will not show up, but it seems inconsistent. To get
the menu to appear, I usually click elsewhere on the screen (e.g. the
desktop background) and then go back to the menu and try opening it
again.

Note that I am NOT running an nVidia driver. The hardware driver listed
under the Additional Drivers system admin menu is ATI/AMD proprietary
FGLRX graphics driver. I'm sure the apport info has more specific
details.

[Bug 685286] [NEW] Cannot mount some video DVDs

2010-12-04 Thread Jake Shorelan
Public bug reported:

I believe this is a duplicate of 304954
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/304954?comments=all),
but apport will not let me add to that bug report for some reason.

Inserting a DVD+R that was burned on my DVD player/recorder from an old
VHS home movie (absolutely no copy protection anywhere) results in the
following kernel message, repeated many, many times:

[185941.874746] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK
driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[185941.874749] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[185941.874752] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
[185941.874756] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00
[185941.874761] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
[186958.829588] lo: Disabled Privacy Extensions

I can mount most video DVDs and data DVDs and CDs. The command 'sudo
mount -t iso9660 /dev/dvdrw /mnt' results in the message:

mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so

and more of the same kernel messages. This happens with both of my DVD
drives (NEC DVD RW ND-3550A and LITE-ON DVD SOHD-16P9S).

Wasn't happy with that one and only later realized that Help and FAQ
are the same link. One should be dropped, FAQ is more descriptive.

Community, Forum Actions and Quick Links are actually menus and
should be differentiated from other links. Included them all in my new
mockup, but perhaps it should be a single menu, or the actual actions
right on the bar, depending on their max. number.

I realize that such heavy modification can be problematic, but I wanted
to see where I end up, applying more of the ubuntu.com style:
 http://www.foopics.com/showfull/24cab922804efd5587f7d8d6109d168a

Login and Search button shown in disabled state, as they should be, if
 the entries are empty.

An alternative to the stars (or other icons) for read/unread would be
bold type, similar to what Evolution does.

[Bug 659411] Re: Entering a tilda ~ does not take you to the home directory

2010-11-05 Thread Jake Tolbert
Out of curiosity (and mostly for my education--I don't really know how
these things work), how does the process work for this to get fixed up?

I see on the upstream bug report that someone's attached a patch. How
does that patch make its way into the Ubuntu update process (and what
sort of time frame do these things normally run on)?

2010-10-07 Thread Jake LeMaster
People are giving feedback to this issue. Some developers would be
interested in that. It's frustrating to have the usability of a program
hurt so badly by such a seemingly small thing. (It seems like it should
be able to qualify as a Papercut.)

And this bug report has a whole 7 comments in the extremely long time
it's been open. I really don't think you're justified in making a huff
over it.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Solutions

2010-09-19 Thread Jake Tolbert
I've been a lurker on this list for at least a year, and will probably
continue to lurk--I enjoy design but suck at it myself :).

That said, as a bit of an outsider, I think the overwhelming problem with
this list is that there's no apparent purpose to it: Canonical has its own
design team which has little to no involvement and takes little to no input
from the community (namely this list).

I don't necessarily mean that in a mean-spirited way--it's simply what I've
seen repeatedly. Artists come in, and introduce themselves saying, I'd love
to contribute to Ubuntu! and they're consistently greeted with the
motivation-killing this list doesn't actually contribute to Ubuntu--we just
make art that generally relates to Ubuntu.

Doing design in a open source sort of way is really, really difficult (I
haven't yet seen a successful model--it may exist, but I haven't seen it),
which, I assume, is why it's not happening here.

Unfortunately, until this community has a way to meaningful way to actually
contribute to Ubuntu, I think it'll continue to languish. I'm not trying to
be negative--on the contrary, I think there's a LOT of potential here (I
really think Ubuntu has the potential to break through the outlandishly
difficult problem of open source design). I'm just not smart enough to solve
the problem itself.

[Bug 592016] Re: [Maverick] Sound is always muted on startup; unmuting makes the volume at lowest level

2010-09-18 Thread Jake LeMaster
Daniel, but how would I fix the problem for an existing user? I've
already tried stopping pulse and deleting .pulse* from the home
directory.

I'm glad that when I start my computer and login to my username, my
sound isn't muted upon entering my session anymore. But I'm still
troubled by the fact this isn't guaranteed for other user sessions that
may start during (like with fast user switching) or after that initial
session. They still get muted sound upon login.

2010-09-16 Thread Jake LeMaster
Perhaps I spoke a little too soon. It does indeed appear to be *mostly*
fixed (sound isn't muted now upon boot), but I just logged out of one
user and into another, and the second user had muted sound. The levels
weren't zeroed, but it was indeed muted when it shouldn't have been. (No
login sound or anything.) Blah.

[Bug 638103] [NEW] gdm 2.30.5-0ubuntu4 regression - wrong resolution

2010-09-14 Thread Jake LeMaster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Since upgrading gdm to 2.30.5-0ubuntu4 from the previous version, it
fails to set the correct resolution at bootup. This is the first time
it's ever done this. In the past it has always chosen my monitor's
correct native widescreen resolution of 1440x900, but it's now choosing
1280x1024.

I'm using an ATI card with the default non-proprietary Xorg drivers.

[Bug 592016] Re: [Maverick] Sound is always muted on startup; unmuting makes the volume at lowest level

2010-09-02 Thread Jake LeMaster
This isn't completely fixed. It's still here in a strange way.

For my account, the issue is gone. But for the second user account on my
machine, the bug still exists. Here are peculiar things I can easily
reproduce:

Consider user A my account - sound always works fine. User B is the
account where sound will still start muted.

1. Log into user B first after booting the computer.
2. Sound is muted.
3. Switch to user A.
4. Sound works. (Login theme plays and everything.)
5. Switch back to user B - sound is no longer muted and is working.
6. Switch to user A and log out.
7. Switch to user B and log out.
8. Log back into user B.
9. Sound is muted again.
10. Repeat steps 3-9 as many times as you want.

It's like Pulse isn't working for user B unless user A logged in at
some point during user B's session. I wouldn't know what's really going
on, but I can reproduce it trivially everytime with those steps. It
doesn't require rebooting or anything. Any idea?

[Bug 592016] Re: [Maverick] Sound is always muted on startup; unmuting makes the volume at lowest level

2010-09-02 Thread Jake LeMaster
Hi Luke, I tried your suggestion and it didn't help. I actually did it
for both accounts, and now the one that was working is back to having
the muted problem again too. :/

If you yourself try what you suggested, does it make the problem come
back? Or for anyone else?

Is there anything else I should try?

And just for the record, I am indeed running a fully up-to-date standard
Maverick.

Thanks.

[Bug 150690] Re: Can't drag a window to another workspace

2010-08-15 Thread Jake LeMaster
Ugh. So yeah, these Compiz/Workspace Switcher bugs still obviously
exist.

1. Can't use mouse wheel to scroll workspaces in the switcher.
2. Can't drag from the window list to the workspace switcher to send a window
to another workspace.
3. Can't drag a window from the window switcher and drop it on itself to do the
same thing.

Those are three things I do often in Metacity that I can't do in Compiz.
These issues are literally the only reasons I have Visual Effects set to
None. I don't understand why I can't at least use my mouse wheel to
change workspaces in the switcher when clicking works.
