[Bug 2071707] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2024-07-02 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

The system fails to boot properly. It starts, but after Grub the screen
remains blank and the system does not respond to anything, including
keystrokes.

Workaround to make the problem go away:

When booting, press "e" in the grub menu and then remove "splash"
argument from the kernel command line.

Music works, bass speakers are not enabled.

There is no sound at all.

Maybe someone else with the issue can give it a go?

[Bug 1926165] Re: Bass speakers not enabled on Lenovo Yoga 9i

2021-05-16 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
> The bass speaker and main speaker work together, if you play some
sound from the speaker, the sound will be played by bass speaker and
main speaker together.

That is not what happens in real life. The sound is tinny and poor
compared to playing the exact same sound clip on Windows. This is
especially noticeable if you lift the laptop up and point the bottom
side towards you. On Windows you can sense that the bottom firing
speakers are working but on Linux they remain still.

> How do you expect the bass speaker to work?

I would expect it to work exactly how you described above, but it does
not behave like that.

[Bug 1926165] [NEW] Bass speakers not enabled on Lenovo Yoga 9i

2021-04-26 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

The Lenovo Yoga 9i has two sets of speakers: regular ones and bass
speakers. The former work but while latter are detected and show up in
alsamixer, they play no sound. Plugging headphones in and out or
toggling any of the volume options does not fix the issue.

A possibly related issue for a different Yoga version:

[Bug 1757566] [NEW] FFe for 0.45.1

2018-03-21 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

We have just released 0.45.1 which fixes a grave Debian bug #892956.
This bug is serious enough that Ubuntu should either distro patch the
fix in their current version or transition to 0.45.1. The latter is a
lot simpler, and contains only a few regression fixes compared to
0.45.0. We recommend that an FFe is granted so 0.45.1 can enter Bionic.

[Bug 1754578] Re: New meson version including features uploaded without ffe

2018-03-12 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
The reason we recommended 0.44.1 is that traditionally 0.X.0 releases
have had regressions that we have had to fix later. Since 0.45.0 was
so close to Ubuntu freeze it was considered safer to stick with 0.44.1
because it has been tested in the field. However it turned out that
0.45.0 actually had no regressions and it is even possible that there
will never be 0.45.1 because of this. Thus it seems to be safe to go
with 0.45.0 for bionic if you so wish.

[Bug 1727474] [NEW] gfortran fails to link openmpi programs

2017-10-25 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

Write a file like this called main.f90:

program mpitest
  implicit none
  include 'mpif.h'
  logical :: flag
  integer :: ier
  call MPI_Init(ier)
  if (ier /= 0) then
print *, 'Unable to initialize MPI: ', ier
stop 1
  endif
  call MPI_Initialized(flag, ier)
  if (ier /= 0) then
print *, 'Unable to check MPI initialization state: ', ier
stop 1
  endif
  call MPI_Finalize(ier)
  if (ier /= 0) then
print *, 'Unable to finalize MPI: ', ier
stop 1
  endif
end program mpitest

Compile it like this:

gfortran -I. -I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openmpi/include
-I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openmpi/include/openmpi
-I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openmpi/lib -Wall -O0 -g -pthread -o main.f90.o -c
main.f90
gfortran -o exef main.f90.o -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openmpi/lib
-L/usr//lib -Wl,--start-group -lmpi_usempif08 -lmpi_usempi_ignore_tkr
-lmpi_mpifh -lmpi -Wl,--end-group

The compile step will work but linking will fail with this error
message:

/usr/bin/ld: main.f90.o(.debug_info+0xd8): unresolvable R_X86_64_64 relocation
against symbol `mpi_fortran_argv_null_'

[Bug 1698463] Re: v0.41.0 meson has numerous regressions that stop vala based apps compiling

2017-06-17 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
0.41.1 is planned to be released Sunday (that is tomorrow). If it is
possible for you to test if current trunk + this MR fixes the issues it
would be helpful: https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/pull/1951

While we're at it Meson currently can't because it is blocked by a
regression on ARM as reported here:

http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/proposed-
migration/update_excuses.html#meson

However that is _not_ a regression in Meson. It is a GCC bug that only
appears now because we have more tests than the previous release. The
bug has been reported to Debian but there has been no activity on it:

[Bug 1473680] [NEW] Please update Ninja from Debian

2015-07-11 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu has version 1.3.4 of Ninja. This is very old. Debian has version
1.5.1 even in testing. It has not migrated to Ubuntu proper for some
reason, probably because uploads newer than 1.3.4 are NMUs.

Please update Ninja to the version in Debian. This is preventing new
versions of Meson from getting into the archive as it has a requirement
of = 1.5 for Ninja.

Thanks,

[Bug 1413943] [NEW] Upgrading to vivid breaks dual boot on OS X

2015-01-23 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

First of all, apologies if this is filed against the wrong package, but
this seemed like the most pertinent one.

When you upgrade from utopic to vivid on an OS X machine running
Yosemite, the upgrade procedure overwrites the boot code somehow. When
booting the computer will print booting in insecure mode or something
like that and boots immediately to Ubuntu. The only way to boot to OSX
is to hold alt when booting and then selecting efi boot from the list
of items. This brings up the proper rEFInd boot menu.

The expected behaviour is that after the update booting happens via
rEFInd just like before the upgrade.

[Bug 1398614] Re: mediascanner-service-2.0 using large amounts of CPU

2015-01-23 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
This should only happen once: the first time you insert the drive. It
might happen again if you unplug the disk before scanning is finished.
After the first scan the results are cached and further connections
should be fast again.

If you wish to prevent Mediascanner from scanning your external drive,
place a file called .nomedia in the root dir of your drive and it won't
be scanned.

The stack trace says the crash is happening inside libvaapi, which makes
this a gstreamer bug. Reassigning.

[Bug 1410260] Re: Image provider blocking the UI thread

2015-01-19 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Qt's documentation says this:

To force asynchronous image loading, even for image sources that do not
have the asynchronous property set to true, you may pass the
QQuickImageProvider::ForceAsynchronousImageLoading flag to the image
provider constructor. This ensures that all image requests for the
provider are handled in a separate thread.

This is exactly what thumbnailer does (thumbnailgenerator.cpp:29). This
should make it fully asynchronous. All threading related to this is done
by Qt internals and they are not exposed to QQuickImageProviders. This
would indicate that the blocking happens somewhere inside Qt and thus is
not caused by thumbnailer.

[Bug 1403906] Re: thumbnailer crash when reading metadata

2015-01-07 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
I have been able to reproduce this finally with the following steps:

- flash krillin (--bootstrap) with vivid-proposed
- put the broken image in ~/Pictures
- start Gallery
- if not crash, close Gallery, rm -rf .cache/com.ubuntu.gallery/ and go back to
previous step

After a few tries it crashes. If you install the new packages from silo
19 (as mentioned in the linked branch MR) I can't make the crash happen
any more.

One thing that I did encounter was that when I click on the image in
gallery, it comes up fully black. The thumbnail looks correct, though.
However as far as I understand it Gallery should not use thumbnailer for
displaying full sized images. If that is the case then this is an issue
somewhere else.

Florian, Bill: since you two seem to be the hardest hit by this bug
could you test silo 19? If it works for you then post your results here
so we can get this one landed. Thanks.

[Bug 1407720] [NEW] Dash uses incorrect serialisation for indicator-network menu icons

2015-01-05 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

Currently indicator-network exports icons to show like this (gdbus
dump):

'icons':
  [
   ('themed', ['gsm-3g-full']),
   ('themed', ['nm-signal-50-secure'])
  ]
 ,

That is they are an array of variants (that happen to be tuples).
However this seems to be incorrect. At least if you use the indicator-
loader it chokes on these and refuses to draw them. The form that it
accepts looks like this:

'icons':
  [
   ('themed', ['gsm-3g-full']),
   ('themed', ['simcard-locked']),
   ('themed', ['nm-signal-75-secure'])
  ]

That is, an array of tuple variants. One of these two gets it wrong and
since indicator-loader is the older of the two, I'm guessing that is the
correct one. Feel free to reassign as appropriate if you feel that
Unity8 is doing the right thing here.

[Bug 1339792] Re: Panel network icon - too much latency when network type changes

2014-11-27 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Using i-n-sniffer it can be seen that the icon updates when ofono sends
a dbus signal telling that modem connection quality has changed. This
probably means that some event has been missed, so either:

1) i-n does not respond properly to some event it is getting
2) either ofono or NetworkManager is not sending a proper change event signal

Looking further...

[Bug 1391286] Re: Fails to generate thumbnail for small videos recorded with camera-app

2014-11-17 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
What happens here is that thumbnailer calls the
gst_app_sink_pull_preroll function which fails. The documentation
(http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/data/doc/gstreamer/head/gst-plugins-
base-libs/html/gst-plugins-base-libs-appsink.html#gst-app-sink-pull-
preroll) says that this returns null if EOS has been reached. Printf
debugging says that this is indeed the case, it returns null and
gst_app_sink_is_eos reports true. After EOS no more samples can be
obtained from the stream.

The previous gstreamer method we call is gst_element_seek_simple. It
returns true indicating success and the seek point we specify is valid
(13400 which is less than the duration 46900).

Unless someone can show that thumbnailer is using gstreamer incorrectly,
it seems to be the case that gstreamer somehow internally causes EOS to
be emitted. This would make this a bug in gstreamer rather than
thumbnailer.

For comparison I also tested GST_SEEK_FLAG_ACCURATE instead of
GST_SEEK_FLAG_KEY_UNIT but the behaviour is the same.

[Bug 1383357] Re: enabling flight mode shows airplane + [2g|3g] icon

2014-11-05 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
The reason this is happening is that NetworkManager is not sending the
proper signal. In the log we should find a signal sent with value 20.
This is not there. If you do 'nmcli nm' when your phone is in this
state, it will get fixed (nm reinitializes its state and sends the
signal it should have sent earlier). This makes this bug a duplicate of
#1386109.

However please do NOT mark this bug as a duplicate of that bug. The
reason being that if you do, it will vanish from bug searches and people
will keep refiling this one again and again.

[Bug 1364466] Re: /usr/bin/mediascanner-service-2.0:*** Error in `mediascanner-service-2.0': double free or corruption (fasttop): ADDR ***

2014-10-23 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
This issue can be triggered without any Mediascanner involmement at all.
Just issue the following command:

gst-discoverer--1.0 /path/to/files/*

Note that you _must_ pass all files to the command line at once. Looping
over the list and invoking gst-discoverer-1.0 on each one separately
does not trigger the crash.

gst-discoverer-1.0 is in package gstreamer1.0-plugins-base-apps.

[Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-10-08 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
If one uses the packages from the linked MR, thumbnails in the gallery
app stop working and print this error:

file:///usr/share/click/preinstalled/com.ubuntu.gallery/2.9.1.1084/rc/qml/OrganicView/OrganicMediaList.qml:165:24:
QML QQuickImage: Invalid image provider:
image://thumbnailer//home/phablet/Pictures/com.ubuntu.camera/image20141008_085937290.jpg

Which means that it can't see the thumbnailer's qml plugin. Which is
totally weird because e.g. album art works on the music app and their
imports are identical (import Ubuntu.Thumbnailer 0.1). I'm totally at a
loss here.

I fixed the imports in gallery-app. When using the packages combining
the two linked branches, things work for me.

Bill, can you try them and verify if this fixes the crashes for you?

If we merge these branches as is then all programs that used import
Ubuntu.Components instead of Ubuntu.Thumbnailer will have broken
thumbnails until they fix their imports. Only few applications use
thumbnailer and all others I know of have proper imports so this impact
is minimal (probably zero). However I'll let someone else make the
policy call.

[Bug 1376219] Re: qmlscene crashed with SIGABRT in __gnu_cxx::__verbose_terminate_handler() in music_app

2014-10-07 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
It's hard to tell because this bug does not have
upstart.mediascanner-2.0.log.txt but this probably has the same root
cause as #1378113. What is happening is that somehow multiple instances
of the Mediascanner daemon are running at the same time (or someone else
has opened the db in rw mode, which nobody really should be doing).
SQLite does not permit multiple writers in the same db at the same time
so it rightfully errors out.

But the question is why is this happening. There is only one MS instance
and it opens the db only once. Could there be some sort of a weird
timing issue with upstart (which seems extremely unlikely)?

[Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-10-06 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
The real reason for this bug has been hiding in plain sight on this page
all the time. Note the backtrace above:

#5 0xacf9b466 in ThumbnailGenerator::requestImage(QString const, QSize*, QSize
const) ()
   from
/usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/qt5/qml/Ubuntu/Components/libUbuntuComponents.so

This means that the thumbnailer plugin is invoked from
libUbuntuComponents.so, which is provided by ubuntu-ui-toolkit and *not*
from the plugin provided by thumbnailer. And, sure enough, in
modules/Ubuntu/Components/plugin/plugin.cp we find this:

try {
engine-addImageProvider(QLatin1String(thumbnailer), new
ThumbnailGenerator);
} catch(std::runtime_error e) {
qDebug()  Could not create thumbnailer:   e.what();
}

This same piece of code can also be found in
plugins/Ubuntu/Thumbnailer/plugin.cpp (along with the other two
generators it provides.

A quick test shows that removing the registration code from thumbnailer
makes these threading bugs disappear. Apparently what happens is that if
you register the same image provider into Qt twice, it gets confused and
starts corrupting its own data structures.

A side effect of this fix is that when you tap on a picture in the
gallery app to bring it full screen, pinch-to-zoom no longer works and
there is other weirdness (sometimes the image goes fully black). (As an
aside, why is gallery even using the thumbnailer for this? You need the
entire image for proper zooming so why not just open it directly?)

To get this fixed we need to do the following:

- decide with UI toolkit people on where the correct place for thumbnail image
provider is
- once done we need to verify if the pinching bug still happens and fix it
- land all MRs dealing with the above as one clump

[Bug 1376500] Re: [regression] thumbnails and image previews displayed wrong

This is a bug in the camera app. It produces jpg files whose exif
thumbnails have incorrect aspect ratio. Attached is a raw thumbnail

change mentioned above) because scaling the full image is way too slow

[Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-09-29 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
I instrumented thumbnailer to print some text when it is created and
called. Then I copied images to the Pictures directory and clicked
around. It turns out that ThumbnailGenerator::requestImage is never
called. The generated thumbnails do not appear in ~/.cache/thumbnails
either (which they should, unless gallery-app is requesting large enough
images).

I wrote a thread torture test for thumbnailer and ran it under helgrind
for 15 minutes or so and it produced no thread errors.

Even more strangely I can't reproduce this any more. Tapping on an image
while others are loading works just fine.

All of this, combined with bug #1375238, makes me suspect that there is
a threading bug/buffer overrun somewhere else in the stack and it just
happens to manifest itself as this bug.

Could you do the following:

- clear all media, unplug the sd card and reboot (reinstall is also good)
- start phablet-shell

You should get logging output telling what files mediascanner is finding

If this is happening, then the fault lies somewhere in the scope/query

It will also be slow to scan only the first time. Once it has scanned
the directories, it caches the results and does not do it again, even if
you unplug and replug your drive.

[Bug 1371313] Re: [krillin] Wi-Fi toggle disappears from menu when Wi-Fi disabled

2014-09-22 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
I did this and it works in that the toggle button does not disappear.
Toggling it off and on makes wifi go off and on. Toggling it again makes
the wifi go off and _not_ come back.

This might be partially triggered by the device going to sleep (blanking
the screen) or not. It's not 100% clear.

[Bug 1371502] [NEW] Update fails with image 245 and silo 19

2014-09-19 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
Public bug reported:

On Mako I reflashed to image 245 using --boostrap. Then I added new
system-image-cli from silo 19. After killing the dbus service I did
system-settings - about this phone - updates - check for updates.

The system tells that there is an update and prompts to install it.
After selecting yes, system-settings brings up the install page that has
a progress bar with blinking text In Progress. It then remains stuck
there, top says that system-settings and unity use ~40% CPU time each.
Nothing happens though, it will remain stuck there forever. When the
screensaver comes up, CPU load drops to 0.

Going in with phablet-shell and pinging shows that network is working.

[Bug 1369539] Re: mediascanner-service-2.0 crashed while creating thumbnails

2014-09-18 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1364466 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1364466

Mediascanner does not generate thumbnails. It has never done so, that is
thumbnailer's job.

What is happening here is that gstreamer metadata extractor is buggy and
crashes on some files. This is a known issue and Mediascanner has
protections against this as it remembers what files caused it to crash
and skips those. Marking as duplicate.

[Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-09-15 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
This backtrace does not make any sense. ThumbnailCache object exists:

#3 0xacebec62 in ThumbnailCache::get_if_exists (this=0x7641d4

but ThumbnailCachePrivate does not:

#2 ThumbnailCachePrivate::get_cache_file_name (this=0x0

I went through the code but found no code path that could possibly lead
to this. The private variable is only assigned to in the constructor
with new. If it fails it should throw an exception so the ThumbnailCache
object is never created.

[Bug 1362150] Re: [Greeter] SIM PIN unlock usability needs improving

2014-09-15 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
If we allow fullscreen apps (and even if we don't) there is no possible
way to prevent password phishing attacks. Any app can draw a fake SIM
unlock dialog that looks pixel-to-pixel identical to the real thing.

[Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-09-15 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
I followed your steps to the letter (except that ~/.cache/com.ubuntu
.gallery-app should be ~/.cache/com.ubuntu.gallery) and got no crash.

The reason for rtm being old is that we have a silo (line 14 in the
spreadsheet) which has been fully tested but QA has not signed off on it
for reasons we don't know.
