[Bug 39376]

2023-06-16 Thread Marcin-kasperski-m
- Do editors in 2023 still save files like sth.txt~, sth.txt.bak and
similars?

  Yes, they do.
  Some skip that when working inside git/hg/svn/… folder, some allow
  to use separate folder, but such files are still fairly frequent.

- Would some users prefer not to see those files?

  Yes. For example myself.

- Does KDE allow user to manage which files are hidden, and which are
not?

  No, it doesn't.
  There is option to show or hide „Hidden files” but no way to influence
  which file is considered to be „Hidden”.

So functionality-wise bug is just as sound and valid, as it was when it
was reported.

Projects make various priorities, open-source projects even more so
(considering people come to work on what they fancy or what they find
troublesome). Some bugs are less lucky. But if there is to be any hope,
the open issue means the thought of doing sth is not abandoned.

And it is somewhat heart-warming to get mail that sb. started working on
issue I reported 20 years ago (OK, OK, I reported one of the early
dupes, not this one)

Yeah, 20 years passed, konqueror switched to dolphin, but while I can easily
hide/show
   .something.txt
(Ctrl-H in dolphin) there doesn't seem to exist an option to hide
 something.txt~

It still affects in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
It's shocking that the bug hasn't been fixed in LTS release although it was
detected in the previous version.

[Bug 1970125] Re: suspend drains battery

2022-04-25 Thread Marcin
Just comment and 2 cents (adding here with hope that will see mail
notifications): I also observe battery drain... but my bug was marked as
invalid. Different Intel CPU generation (11) and problem is visible in
normal work (not standby). Still trying to find root cause (kernel?
Gnome? Snap?)

Re: [Bug 1970036] Re: Ubuntu 22.04 much worse in energy saving than 21.10

2022-04-23 Thread Marcin
Dear Erich

Thank you very much. I don't know if your target is closing things or
something else, but... Ignoring information, that release has got energy
problems on generic hardware, ideally confirms, what's the quality. I don't
know which package(s) is/are responsible for that, but in normal situation
somebody could at least ask for more info or something. I don't know also
what should be CPU usage (100%?), that could allow assigning it to bug
category, but generally it's very bad from quality perspective, that it's
ignored. Shame. I liked Ubuntu.

With kind regards
Marcin Wiacek

[Bug 1970036] Re: Ubuntu 22.04 much worse in energy saving than 21.10

2022-04-23 Thread Marcin
TLP is not answer and I already explained it. Two systems have the same
energy settings (power saving on CPU cores, graphic card, etc.) and
battery time is about 30% shorter.

Again: problem is that there some actions done in background and CPU
cores are not going into sleep so long like earlier. This seems to be
gnome 42 problem... But also related to updates checking. It would be
good, when somebody could start looking into it. 30% is even 10h for me
and this is not in this moment "I imagine it's worse".

In ideal case I should see 0% CPU usage in idle (maybe not very
realistic) or at least assigning everything only to one core.

[Bug 1970036] [NEW] Ubuntu 22.04 much worse in energy saving than 21.10

2022-04-23 Thread Marcin
Public bug reported:

My laptop was updated from 21.10 to 22.04 and has got much worse battery
work time (even about 30% or more). Standard Intel 11-gen with
integrated graphic, no external devices. Nothing special.

I'm looking into System Monitor and it looks, new release has various
processes, which are started quite regurarly and are enabling various
CPU cores. CPU usage is not high, but because it's regular and not done
on one core... well, it leads me to question - was somebody even started
thinking about it? Or just upgraded everything and was happy, that it's
working?

First of all it could be good to start something on next CPU cores only,
when previous one are too busy. I know, it's kernel scheduler thing. Big
problem.

About processes in idle mode (no keyboard and touchpad pressing, no usb
devices, no network, no sound playing, no camera enabled, nothing
started, really only desktop):

Xorg and gnome-shell - always doing something (+ shell is saving and
reading a lot from disk, which increases power usage too)

systemd-oomd - really? Started regularly, when I have even 20% RAM used.
There should be trigger saying "use it only when for example 80% RAM is
used"

i915_flip - don't know what do to with that. Have only laptop screen

snap-store and network manager - don't have network in this moment.
Really need to run it regurarly? it should be started, when network is
on

gsd-housekeeping - very often

snapd - even when I don't do anything

pulse - even when I don't have sound

update-notifier - what? even without network? this should be called
only, when normal updates are checked... and when I set "check for
updates daily" it should be called once a day only (or when network is
connected and last check was done more than 24 h ago)

I could give even much longer list and I could say "this is absolute
normal", but... 21.10 was much better. Could somebody take any device
and just start doing something about it ? CPU usage with spikes up to
20% in idle mode is not normal (earlier my powertop was showing about 50
events, now standard is 150 or 200)

Additionally it's not possible to enable automatic suspend in time
shorter than 15 minutes. Why? Why? Why?

PS. with development experience > 20 years I see, that somebody really
haven't looked on it from higher perspective (and now there is required
some project, in which it will be checked, how things are working
together).

PS2. well, this problem makes, that I need either to downgrade or move
to other distribution. And to clarify - I'm of course using various
power saving settings, like profile, etc. (installation and strategy
related to both versions are the same)

f6f30065b430ef670e5a163577634941c20f8855 is the first bad commit
commit f6f30065b430ef670e5a163577634941c20f8855

Date:   Thu May 6 17:44:00 2021 +0200

drm/i915: Try to use fast+narrow link on eDP again and fall back to the old
max strategy on failure

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1925685

Some new eDP panels don't like to operate at the max parameters, and
instead we need to go for an optimal confiugration. That unfortunately
doesn't work with older eDP panels which are generally only guaranteed
to work at the max parameters.

To solve these two conflicting requirements let's start with the optimal
setup, and if that fails we start again with the max parameters. The
downside is probably an extra modeset when we switch strategies but
I don't see a good way to avoid that.

For a bit of history we first tried to go for the fast+narrow in
commit 7769db588384 ("drm/i915/dp: optimize eDP 1.4+ link config
fast and narrow"). but that had to be reverted due to regression
on older panels in commit f11cb1c19ad0 ("drm/i915/dp: revert back
to max link rate and lane count on eDP"). So now we try to get
the best of both worlds by using both strategies.

[Bug 1933716] Re: Black screen on boot after stable update

2021-07-25 Thread Marcin Slusarz
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1934647 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934647

This is NOT a duplicate of bug #1934647 - there's no Nvidia or AMD card
in this laptop (it's Intel-only) and regressing kernel version is
different. If I connect an external monitor I can see the purple
background on it, but the login window is on the internal one and I
can't blindly login because of another bug, where keyboard input is
ignored in ~80% of cases until I click on the username and back button a
couple of times.

[Bug 1923024] [NEW] Ubuntu loader not loading binaries with Program Header located in the last LOAD segment

2021-04-08 Thread Marcin
Public bug reported:

Notice please that I'm not an expert in ELF files after examining
documentation briefly I've read the following:

Specification says that PHDR segment is not mandatory.
Program Header can be located in LOAD segment.
However it doesn't say it needs to be the first LOAD segment.

I have a binary with Program Header located in non-first LOAD segment
and the loader crashes.

[Bug 1903841] Re: i915 kerner driver can't initialize two connected LVDS outputs

2021-04-07 Thread Marcin Fabisz
I was asked to report this bug to the Intel driver Github:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/2794

I have also provided logs on this bug.

This issue appears also on other projects, where it is not possible to
use multiple same devices on a system because of this bug. Here an
example:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1443678

The issue was not fixed back then. Some people made hotfixes by
themselves:

[Bug 1803391] Re: Systemd update installation hangs in unattended-upgrades InstallOnShutdown mode

2021-04-02 Thread Marcin Janowski
When i do upgrade form 18.04 to 20.04 with do-release-upgrade my system reboots
on systemctl daemon-reexec from /var/lib/dpkg/info/systemd.postinst code:
```
# skip daemon-reexec and try-restarts during shutdown to avoid hitting LP:
#1803391
if [ -n "$2" ] && [ "$(systemctl is-system-running)" != "stopping" ]; then
_systemctl daemon-reexec || true
# don't restart logind; this can be done again once this gets implemented:
# https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/1163
_systemctl try-restart systemd-networkd.service || true
_systemctl try-restart systemd-resolved.service || true
_systemctl try-restart systemd-journald.service || true
fi
```

command systemctl is-system-running return degradated.

If i execute systemctl daemon-reexec from hand while do-release-upgrade
waiting for accept changes on journald.conf, my system hangs.

There is strace -ff systemctl daemon-reexec:

[Bug 1905285] Re: socket-activated sshd breaks on concurrent connections

2020-11-26 Thread Marcin Słowik
Hello Segio,

Have you tried editing ssh@.service as well? In my case, sshd.service ->
ssh.service and that is not used when ssh is in socket-activated mode,
ssh@.service is, at least that's how I understand systemd.

I now understand how to override the unit files with [unit-
file].d/override.conf files and that at least fixes the overwrite on
update issue (although I must say it's a bit unintuitive, since some of
the /usr/lib/systemd/system configs are symlinked from
/etc/systemd/system and IIRC you should be allowed to modify configs
under /etc, but I digress). AFAICT that's precisely what `systemctl
edit` does.

Seth, thank you for linking the manpage, it was... educational to say
the least :).

[Bug 1905285] [NEW] socket-activated sshd breaks on concurrent connections

2020-11-23 Thread Marcin Słowik
Public bug reported:

This is mostly the same issue as https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=934663.

With the default configuration of openssh-server and systemd, sshd will
complain and crash when multiple connections are made and terminated in
a quick succession, e.g. with `ssh-keyscan`. It results in the following
errors in /var/log/auth.log:

[Bug 1905069] [NEW] python-botocore in xenial-updates can no longer make S3 requests due to some incompatibility with python-openssl

2020-11-20 Thread Marcin Sulikowski
Public bug reported:

I found python-botocore 1.16.19+repack-1ubuntu0.16.04.2 unable to make
S3 requests. Minimal reproducer:

import os
import boto3
os.environ["AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID"] = "ABCABCABCABCABCABCAB"
os.environ["AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY"] =
"YWJjYWJjYWJjYWJjYWJjYWJjYWJjYWJjYWJhYmMK"
os.environ["AWS_DEFAULT_REGION"] = "us-east-1"
boto3.client("s3").list_objects(Bucket="abc")

The error I get with python-botocore 1.16.19+repack-1ubuntu0.16.04.2
from xenial-updates/universe is:

Downgrading it to python-botocore 1.3.23-1 from xenial/universe solves
the problem (the error changes to "The AWS Access Key Id you provided
does not exist in our records" but this is expected).

The error exception "name must be a byte string" originates from
pyopnessl (https://github.com/pyca/pyopenssl/issues/515) so my
understanding is that the latest version of botocore in xenial-updates
is incompatible with xenial's ssl libraries.

[Bug 1903841] [NEW] i915 kerner driver can't initialize two connected LVDS outputs

2020-11-11 Thread Marcin Fabisz
Public bug reported:

The bug appears from Ubuntu 18.04 and persists in Ubuntu 20.04 and
20.10.

The hardware:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor
Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display (rev 11)

The bug appears only if both LVDS-Outputs are connected to TFT panels at
the same time.

3) Expected (works at Ubuntu 16.04):
The graphic card is properly initialized and the intel_backlight links appear:

ll /sys/class/backlight/
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 0 Feb 11  2016 intel_backlight ->
../../devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/intel_backlight/
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 0 Feb 11  2016 intel_backlight
../../devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-2/intel_backlight/

Both TFT panels connected via LVDS are on and are showing the desktop.

4) What happens instead:
The the initialisation of the graphic card by the i915 kernel driver fails:

dmesg | grep dup
[2.951765] sysfs: cannot create duplicate filename
'/class/backlight/intel_backlight'
[2.951792]  sysfs_warn_dup.cold+0x17/0x35

The /sys/class/backlight/ directory is empty.

Modesetting fails:
xrandr shows only one eDP-1 output and the disconnected outputs HDMI-1 and
VGA-1 are gone.

The TFT-Panels are off.

[Bug 1898006] [NEW] -Bsymbolic-functions linker flag causes bdirjson output problem

2020-09-30 Thread Marcin Haba
Public bug reported:

Hello Everybody,

In Ubuntu Focal the Bacula binaries are prepared with the following
linker flag:

-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions

It causes a problem because when this flag is used then in bdirjson
output all "Storage" directive values are "null". More information about
this problem you can see in the following ticket in the Bacula Bug
tracker:

https://bugs.bacula.org/view.php?id=2557#c8234

As you can read there Bacula developers recommend to not use this flag
to prepare Bacula binaries.

Could it be possible to stop using the liker flag in Ubuntu Bacula
binaries?

Thank you in advance for your help with solving this problem.

Best regards,
Marcin Haba (gani)

[Bug 1863468] Re: Libreoffice Snap is not available in Turkish

@hellsworth, @fitojb could you also add Polish support ?

According to Google Trends Poland is on 5th place (last 12months) in
LibreOffice :
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore/GEO_MAP?q=%2Fm%2F0dsdths=pl=2

Lack of support Polish makes Libreoffice snap package unuseful for me

[Bug 1882945] Re: snd_hda_intel blocks/freezes suspend

No. I won't be able to find it as I already upgraded to focal.
I'm not 100% sure if it was a kernel updated or other software anyway on 20.04
issue still exists.

My workaround (disable nvida hdmi audio) is 2 posts above:

[Bug 1752680] Re: Night light does not work after resume from suspend or unlock.

2020-06-14 Thread Marcin
I've related issue. I'm on Focal 20.04 LTS.

I did suspend my pc at night when night light was on,
Resumed (from suspend) next day in the afternoon when night light should be off
but it still has much more red temperature color than it should (night light is
on).

Event though I switch to disable night light nothing happens it still have too
much red.
After couple suspends and resumes night light is still on no matter if it's a
day or night.

It seems it only applies night light changes at time of planned toggle
night and day light.

@vanvugt - can it stay here or I should extract it to new bug?

[Bug 1882945] Re: snd_hda_intel blocks/freezes suspend

2020-06-12 Thread Marcin
I workaround it thanks to this:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1404929#p1404929 :

```
In "/etc/modprobe.d/intel.conf" put:
options snd_hda_intel enable=1,0
This is how you disable or enable specific audio hardware when they share the
same driver.  If the wrong one gets disabled then replace "1,0" with "0,1"
```

I disabled Nvidia snd_hda_intel and kept my ALC887 from motherboard on,
and now suspend works and also I've sound transmitting from my motherboard to
speakers.

Nvidia HDMI output provides video, but probably not audio :/
It's an issue but right now not too big for me

as I was unable to force :
$ modprobe -r -f snd_hda_intel

I did change /etc/default/grub to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="snd_hda_intel.blacklist=1 modprobe.blacklist=snd_hda_intel"

then sudo grub-update.

After reboot suspend was finnaly working correctly
but I've NO sound now:(

Googling on the internet I found:

Is it possible that's the change that broke my suspend?

Can you fix this problem?

[Bug 1864787] Re: Lubuntu failed install "sfdisk --force --append /dev/sda"

2020-05-17 Thread Marcin Wojdyr
I had the same problem. I got message:

Job: Create new partition on device '/dev/sda'
  Command: sfdisk --force --append /dev/sda
  Failed to add partition ...

Both Lubuntu installer and KDE Partition Manager failed to create partition.
I tried gparted - it worked fine.

So I used gparted first to create a partition and selected that partition in
Lubuntu installer.
Unfortunately, the installer deleted and tried to re-create the partition,
failing again.

So once more, I used gparted to create a partition and in the Lubuntu
installer I used "Manual partitioning", avoiding partition changes.
Finally it worked.

[Bug 1766095] Re: plymouthd constantly uses 5% of CPU

2020-04-23 Thread Marcin Sochacki
Same problem on a fresh install of Ubuntu 19.10 x86_64 on a Toshiba
Satellite U405. Another curiosity is that plymouth fails to display
anything on the splash screen, it is just black until the system fully
boots up.

Removing splash from /etc/default/grub disables plymouth.

[Bug 1852071] Re: [HP ZBook Studio G5, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS] Brightness function keys works as microphone mute function keys

2020-02-28 Thread Marcin P
It looks like Linux isn't properly initializing some device (keyboard?) or
driver or something else. Under Windows it works after each reboot, so I guess
drivers in Windows must be doing something more in case of device
initialization.
I think HP should look at this. But how to make them interested in this issue?

[Bug 1852071] Re: [HP ZBook Studio G5, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS] Brightness function keys works as microphone mute function keys

2020-02-18 Thread Marcin P
Hi Jarkko,

Thank you very much for your response! I did the procedure you described and it
solved the problem! Brightness function keys started working properly in Ubuntu.
I repeated this procedure on other ZBook Studio G5 laptops we have here and it
also did the job.
However! I have dual boot - after logging into Windows 10 (where buttons always
work perfectly fine) and then logging again into Ubuntu brightness keys stopped
working again (they were recognized as Microphone key, again). I had to do the
Power Reset procedure once more which fixed the issue in Ubuntu.
After testing multiple restarts Ubuntu -> Ubuntu: brightness function keys are
always working fine.
After just one Ubuntu -> Windows -> Ubuntu restart: brightness function keys
stop working in Ubuntu (but work fine in Windows).

So each time after I used Windows I must do the Power Reset procedure if
I want to have brightness function keys working in Ubuntu.

Under Windows 10 everything works perfectly.

I'm just an individual who means nothing to them. I bought their product
which they claim fully support linux (whatever this means).

Honestly, I thought that Ubuntu Team has capabilities to contact vendors
like HP and ask for solutions/help? :(

Yes, the speakers behaves perfectly now. Thank you.

When auto-mute is enabled and I disconnect the headphones shouldn't the
global system volume be muted?

[Bug 1852067] Re: [HP ZBook Studio G5, Conexant Generic, Speaker, Internal] No sound from built-in speakers after disconnecting headphones. Prior to connecting headphones speakers works ok.

2019-11-13 Thread Marcin P
I have some additional observations (on regular kernel: 5.0.0-35-generic
#38~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 11 09:16:10 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
GNU/Linux):

I also have a HP docking station which has its own separated built-in
DAC. When laptop is connected to this docking station I can choose from
following sound devices:

- Digital Output (S/PDIF) - USB Audio
- Analog Output - USB Audio
- Speakers - Built-in Audio

When I don't connect headphones I can switch between these devices and
when coming back to built-in speakers the speakers usually work (however
sometimes they don't). But after connecting headphones the speakers will
never work again.

To clarify: all previous tests I did were done on laptop disconnected
from docking station.

2019-11-12 Thread Marcin P
Thank you Hui Wang for your quick answer.

Could you help me with install and then uninstall procedure?
I understand that I have to install all these kernel packages with "sudo dpkg
-i". But:
1. What is the order of installation of these packages?
2. After installation how can I switch from current kernel to this new kernel?
Currently I use "5.0.0-35-generic #38~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 11 09:16:10
UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux"
3. What if this new kernel won't boot my computer? Will be there any backup
kernel installed?
4. After tests what should I do get back to "stock" kernel?

[Bug 1852083] [NEW] [HP ZBook Studio G5, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS, bluetooth mouse] Choppy/laggy bluetooth mouse cursor movement

2019-11-11 Thread Marcin P
Public bug reported:

1. Pair Logitech MX Master 3 bluetooth mouse with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS (don't use
Logitech bluetooth dongle, use built in laptop bluetooth)
2. Move cursor.
Cursor movement is choppy, laggy, like it's having 20 FPS refresh rate.

Workaround:
execute in terminal: `sudo hcitool lecup --handle 3585 --latency 0 --min 6
--max 8`
This command must be used every time the mouse is connected to the laptop
(after turning on the laptop, after some time of mouse inactivity etc.).

When using Logitech bluetooth dongle this problem never occurs.

+ Cursor movement is choppy, laggy, like it's having 20 FPS refresh rate.

  Workaround:
  execute in terminal: `sudo hcitool lecup --handle 3585 --latency 0 --min 6
--max 8`
  This command must be used every time the mouse is connected to the laptop
(after turning on the laptop, after some time of mouse inactivity etc.).

  When using Logitech bluetooth dongle this problem never occurs.

[Bug 1852071] Re: [HP ZBook Studio G5, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS] Brightness function keys works as microphone mute function keys

2019-11-11 Thread Marcin P
Sound function keys works almost OK:
1) fn+F5 mute/unmute outgoing sound, OK, however LED inside the key is always
off
2) fn+F6 decrease volume, OK
3) fn+F7 increase volume, OK
4) fn+F8 mute/unmute, OK, however LED inside the key is always off

But there are other function keys doesn't work as they should. For example:
5) fn+F12 Calendar - doesn't open the calendar, but does some weird changes to
keyboard layout?
6) fn+F13 Share screen - doesn't do anything, LED inside the key is always off
7) fn+F14 "Call" mostly isn't doing anything; in Firefox it shows/hides menu
bar; LED inside the key is always off
6) fn+F15 "End Call" seems not doing anything, LED inside the key is always off

[Bug 1852067] [NEW] [HP ZBook Studio G5, Conexant Generic, Speaker, Internal] No sound from built-in speakers after disconnecting headphones. Prior to connecting headphones speakers works ok.

2019-11-11 Thread Marcin P
Public bug reported:

Steps to replicate the bug.

1. Start laptop with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS.
Sound from built-in speakers works fine.
Settings -> Sound -> Output shows one device: Speakers - Built-in Audio
2. Connect headphones (wired, mini-jack connector).
Sound from headphones works fine. No sound from built-in speakers (which is OK,
obviously).
Settings -> Sound -> Output shows one device: Headphones - Built-in Audio
3. Disconnect headphones from computer.
No sound from built-in speakers.
Settings -> Sound -> Output shows one device: Speakers - Built-in Audio (ON,
high volume)

Changing volume, turning ON -> OFF -> ON, user logout->login doesn't
help. Only full laptop restart helps.
