[Bug 1968698] Re: Desktop portal's file chooser displays disabled 'Save' button after switching directory

2022-05-06 Thread Maximilian Federle
This does seem to be a bug in the GTK4 file chooser, not the portal
itself:

[Bug 1968698] [NEW] Desktop portal's file chooser displays disabled 'Save' button after switching directory

2022-04-12 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

## System

Ubuntu 22.04
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk 1.14.0-1build1

## How to reproduce

1. Open confined app, snap or flatpak, e.g. Firefox
2. Open file chooser, e.g. by pressing Ctrl + S
3. In the opened file chooser: Enter a subdirectory by clicking on it in the
central file list widget
4. Observe the 'Save' button turning to a disabled state (see the attached
screenshot)

## How to work around

You can work around the issue by editing the file name in the text input
at the top of the window. E.g. by adding and then removing a single
character.

## Expected results

No such problem should occur. There's probably some state management
issue going on. Ubuntu 21.10 did not show such behavior for me.

## Misc observations

A flatpak app showed the same problem.

[Bug 1874684] [NEW] "Show on" setting does nothing in dual-monitor setup

2020-04-24 Thread Maximilian Federle via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

I have two identical monitors that appear with the same name in
settings: Dell Inc. 25"

In the appearance settings I have three options for "Show on":

- All displays
- Dell Inc. 25"
- Dell Inc. 25"

If I want to restrict the dock to one monitor only by switch from "All
displays" to either one of the two "Dell Inc. 25"", nothing changes; the
dock is still shown on both monitors.

Gnome-shell itself has no problems differentiating both monitors and
displays its top-panel only on the primary one.

can't reproduce the freezing with the current kernel. A bit mysterious.

** Description changed:

Ubuntu freezes at the login screen or, if one is quick enough, shortly after
typing a few chars of the password.
Sometimes nothing except the power button works, at times I could reboot via
endless massaging of sysrq + b.

  Last good kernel: 4.15.0-13
  Mainline 4.16.3 is also affected.
  Mainline 4.17rc1 is good again.

[Bug 1766067] [NEW] Dell XPS 9370 freezes at login screen/shortly after login with kernels after 4.15.0-13

2018-04-22 Thread Maximilian Federle via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu freezes at the login screen or, if one is quick enough, shortly after
typing a few chars of the password.
Sometimes nothing except the power button works, at times I could reboot via
endless massaging of sysrq + b.

Last good kernel: 4.15.0-13
Mainline 4.16.3 is also affected.
Mainline 4.17rc1 is good again.

[Bug 1603600] Re: NetworkManager ignores pushed openvpn routes

2016-10-29 Thread Maximilian Federle
After some digging around I found that installing the new upstream
releases of both network-manager (1.4.2) and network-manager-openvpn
(1.2.6) fixed this problem.

[Bug 1603600] Re: NetworkManager ignores pushed openvpn routes

2016-10-29 Thread Maximilian Federle
I can confirm this bug.

network-manager 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.3
network-manager-openvpn 1.1.93-1ubuntu1

The pushed routes are totally lacking, as are the DNS servers if one
doesn't use the VPN as the default gateway for all traffic (i.e. by
activating "Use this connection only for resources on its network").

Sadly, this means it's quite unusable except for the most trivial
applications..

[Bug 1102813] Re: Expo orange selection rectangle is wrong size/position for multiple monitors

2013-01-22 Thread Maximilian Federle
I've experienced something similar with equally sized screens attached
to a notebook:

Maybe they are related.

I applied the above mentioned patch to rarings 3.8.0-1 and rebuilt.
Unfortunately I still need 11n_disable for a limited but usable
connection.

[Bug 1090713] [NEW] workspace switcher's rectangular glow outline has wrong size in multi-monitor setup

2012-12-15 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

i) Steps to reproduce

i.a) Attach second monitor to the system
i.b) Switch to workspace switcher (super+s)
i.c) Observe the size of the glow that displays the active workspace

This happens in both directions. If I unplug the notebook from the
docking station (and thus the two external monitors) I sometimes (?) get
a too big outline on the internal screen. In the normal case I plug the
notebook into the docking station and from there on I have the wrong
outline. (See attached screenshot)

ii) Expected result

The outline adapts to the bigger screen and gets recalculated if the
monitor setup changes.

iii) Actual result

See screenshot

[Bug 1078564] Re: single-key shortcuts in unity don't work

2012-11-14 Thread Maximilian Federle
I try to set the rotate keys on my Lenovo x230t, where you can turn the
screen. The keys show up fine in the system settings when I assign them
to a action, for example a custom shortcut which launches gedit.

The one shows up as 0xa1 and the other one as RotateWindows. As I
noted just today, the 0xa1 key is free for xbindkeys right from the
beginning when I start unity. RotateWindows requires the above mentioned
method of setting it in unity and then unsetting.

I tried setting shortcuts in ccsm, but found no plugin for all-purpose
shortcuts. Therefore I experimented with changing shortcuts of unity
itself. Here I noted that setting the RotateWindows to some action (I
chose open panel menu) works decently. It shows up as Xf86RotateWindows
though. On the other hand setting 0xa1 is impossible. CCSM will just not
recognize it when I press it.

So I summarize:

1) In the keyboard settings I can set both keys to actions although they won't
work. However I can free keys for xbindkeys this way.
2) In CCSM I can only set the RotateWindows key, this works then. 0xa1 (161)
gets ignored.
3) If I start xbindkeys, it can get a hold of 0xa1 by default, RotateWindows
gets only free to grab if I set and unset it again in the keyboard settings.

I'm interested in doing any diagnostical work required. Thanks for
having a look at this issue!

[Bug 1078564] Re: single-key shortcuts in unity don't work

2012-11-14 Thread Maximilian Federle
Sorry for the spam:

I played around a little and it seems like you're completely right: In
general single-key shortcuts do work. Like for example the F-keys. So it
really comes down to those two keys that some component of the desktop
environment refuses to process. Keycodes are 161 and 162.

[Bug 1078564] [NEW] single-key shortcuts in unity don't work

2012-11-13 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

i) Steps to reproduce

1) Open keyboard shortcut settings
2) Add a test shortcut
3) assign a single key to the shortcut. Normally a laptop special key is set
here

ii) Expected result

Shortcuts set this way just work.

iii) Actual result

No effect whatsoever.

An interesting side note: If you have the key bound to some action with
xbindkeys, it will not work initially after starting unity. If you then
assign the key to a specific action in the keyboard settings, it will
still not work. Buf after having removed the key again from the shortcut
settings, xbindkeys takes over and from there on the xbindkeys shortcut
works for the rest of the session.

I must admit I'm a bit baffled that such a bug slipped into a release.
The whole shortcut system is a mess (self resetting shortcuts on every
login, this...).

[Bug 955955] Re: Keyboard shortcuts get reset at every login

2012-10-29 Thread Maximilian Federle
I can confirm this behaviour on two entirely different laptops, both installed
pre-release and then upgraded to final quantal.
Creating a new user does not help in any way.

[Bug 1054964] Re: BCM43225: Horrible ping with Broadcom sta driver

2012-10-28 Thread Maximilian Federle
I recommend disabling the wl driver in the settings (- software sources
- additional drivers) instead of removing it by hand all the time.
Maybe (I don't know) it is then necessary to remove the brcmsmac driver
from the blacklisted modules.

[Bug 1055857] [NEW] windows show entirely white or black when user interrupts minimize animation on nvidia

2012-09-24 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open window of any kind
2) Minimize window by clicking on the minimize-button
3) Quickly click on the corresponding launcher icon to bring the window to the
foreground again

Expected result:

Window shows up as one would expect.

Actual result:

Window comes back, but often either entirely white or black.

[Bug 1055871] [NEW] dash with static blur gets painted over

2012-09-24 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Set dash blur to Static blur
2) Open for example webbrowser window (chromium in my case)
3) Open dash and make sure it is not fully maximized
4) Trigger some repaint of the window in the background. I just hover over a
link.

Expected result:

The dash should entirely stay in foreground.

Actual result:

The dash gets painted over by the underlying window. You have to move
your mouse onto the dash again to bring it back to life.

I attached a video showing the described problem. It doesn't happen with
active blur enabled. Please note that this bug is not specific to
nvidia. It happens on my intel notebook as well.

[Bug 1054964] [NEW] BCM43225: Horrible ping with Broadcom sta driver

2012-09-23 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

Wlan chip is as follows:
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43225 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)

Problem:
As the wl driver seems to be the default for this card I ended up with this
driver after a upgrade to quantal.
However, with this driver, compared to the brcmsmac driver, I get really
horrible pings on the LAN.

Steps to reproduce:
I attach a console log for demonstration.

2012-04-16 Thread Maximilian Federle
No. That just happened without any noticeable crash/restart. Haven't
reproduced this problem so far with the latest unity version as I
haven't been doing any gimp work recently.

Please note how other gimp windows of similar type still have their
menus in the video. If you need more information I can prompt this
problem and then do any debugging work you suggest.

[Bug 977912] Re: Kyocera FS1320D needs resolution set in ghostscript filter

2012-04-12 Thread Maximilian Federle
Testing results:

cups/ghostscript ps at 600 dpi:

time nc -w1 192.168.2.103 9100 output.ps

real0m11.601s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.004s

cups/ghostscript ps at 300 dpi:

time nc -w1 192.168.2.103 9100 output.ps

real0m0.322s
user0m0.004s
sys 0m0.000s

300 dpi is pretty fast as you can see, but the image in the header looks
really crappy then. So I tried the pdf converted with pdftops again,
just to see how the poppler solution performs:

time nc -w1 192.168.2.103 9100 poppler.ps

real0m3.657s
user0m0.004s
sys 0m0.004s

Image quality is as good as the 600dpi ghostscript one. So we are a bit
slower now, but not far far away like before. So I guess this bug is
really fixed. I'm pretty sure one could find fine tune the printer
settings and save a little bit more, but that is up to the user. In
general I would consider this bug fixed. Thank you very very much
Chris for your super-human endurance and of course Till for delivering
the fix. One last question, for the record: Does this patch apply to all
Kyocera printers or only to some/this specific model?

[Bug 977912] Re: Kyocera FS1320D needs resolution set in ghostscript filter

2012-04-12 Thread Maximilian Federle
One last thing: (I quote chrisl here)

actually, it might be worth seeing if tkamppeter_ would be amenable to
an enhancement request to allow decoupling of the *printer* resolution
from the Ghostscript (transparency flattening) resolution - applications
like Acrobat and Illustrator offer exactly that setting in similar
situations.

As we have it now, 300dpi printing is super fast but the images look
pretty crappy. This could be avoided if it was possible to set the
printer's resolution to 600dpi and ghostscript's resolution to 300dpi
somehow. (for these Kyocera printers at least) Please note that this can
in now way be considered a bug but I'll add it here so this idea doesn't
get lost...

[Bug 977912] Re: Kyocera FS1320D needs resolution set in ghostscript filter

2012-04-11 Thread Maximilian Federle
This does not fix the problem. I chose 300 dpi in the printer settings
dialog and printed to a FileDevice Printer with the Kyocera PPD.

The result is a ~1.0 MB file that takes ages to process. I didn't let it
finish because I can't block the printer here for 20 minutes..

time nc -w1 192.168.2.103 9100 300dpi.ps
^C
real5m41.054s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s

If I send the 300dpi uncompressed one that cliddell gave me I have this
processing time:

time nc -w1 192.168.2.103 9100 Unbenannt\ 1-300dpi-uncompressed.ps

real0m0.336s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s

I'll attach my 300dpi.ps.

2012-04-11 Thread Maximilian Federle
Being the average layman, I'm slightly confused. Shouldn't the filter
resolution be = the max. resolution set in the printing settings? This
way one could choose speedy printing by using a lower resolution in
the settings.

[Bug 977912] [NEW] Kyocera FS1320D needs resolution set in ghostscript filter

2012-04-10 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

Chrisl and kens in the #ghostscript channel figured out what causes
these incredible processing slow-downs when feeding ghostscript
postscript containing images to the Kyocera FS 1320D (and most likely
C1020 MFP, I didn't have it here to test this...).

The printer states that it is capable of 1200x1200 dpi. Because
ghostscript internally uses 720dpi to render those images, it would be
desirable to be able to change this to something like 300dpi or more
generally to something where Printer Resolution mod Image Resolution
== 0.

This is probably a good idea for most printers, as this simple change
brought down my printing time from minutes to less than a second.
(transmitting time + processing time; physical output takes longer of
course...)

Just to make on thing clear: This bug also happens with multiple windows
being invisible in spread. Sometimes I have like 10 windows invisible in

[Bug 825775] Re: Siliencing NickServ/ChanServ

2012-04-06 Thread Maximilian Federle
I also find this annoying.

Steps to reproduce:

1) connect to the freenode server with your username
2) the message indicator will immediately turn blue and indicate a new message

But this message is only NickServ telling you that you are now
identified etc. So you have to click on NickServ to bring up its window
to silence it. This is somewhat annoying and may prevent other messages
from being noticed, because the message indicator is blue as long as you
don't click it...

This happens with latest empathy in precise.

[Bug 968051] [NEW] gimp loses global menu entries

2012-03-29 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

After some hardly extensive editing in gimp the menu entries suddenly disappear
from some gimp windows.
Disappear means: The top-level menu-labels are visible and clickable, but they
only reveal empty menus.
Most of the time not all are affected, but after a first encounter it usually
starts to spread to some other gimp windows.
The bug is not reproducible by performing a certain action but is sure to
appear after a while of using gimp.
Restarting the application fixes the problem.

this bug to the right place.

[Bug 963164] [NEW] windows sometimes appear invisible in spread

2012-03-23 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

After working for a while with frequent window-switching, windows start
to display invisible in the spread. Clicking by guessing the invisible
windows' positions reveals them again and they are again visible

This happens to all sorts of programs that have a few windows open (e.g.

[Bug 961905] [NEW] 3.2.0-19-generic freezes on boot

could not report the bug from the frozen kernel, so I rebooted into the
older 3.2.0-18...

- ps by ghostscript in 11.10: does not work
- ps by ghostscript in 12.04: does not work

[Bug 951627] Re: all Kyocera network printers stopped working with cups 1.5.2

2012-03-12 Thread Maximilian Federle
Ok, sorry for the spam:

I have managed to run 1.5 trunk on precise and it works perfectly. The
same auto-detected settings (in this case: AppSocket) in 1.5.2 cause the
FS 1320 to hang in an endless processing state.

Summary:

1.5.0: Works
1.5.2: Does not work
What is to become 1.5.3: Works

So the fix should be pretty easy: Wait for a new cups 1.5 release.

[Bug 951627] Re: all Kyocera network printers stopped working with cups 1.5.2

2012-03-11 Thread Maximilian Federle
First of all, thanks a lot for your quick reply, I'll gladly provide you
with the logs.

The Samsung device is my private device and has worked flawlessly so
far.

At work we spent like two hours combining each of the two printers with each of
the modes you described above with no success.
The best we achieved was with the ipp setting, where the printers at least
reacted and started blinking their LEDs.
We even managed to get some pages out of the printers correctly, however with a
success rate of a most 5% and always with the hanging and restarting of the
devices.

And just to state it again: The printers work with Cups 1.5.0 on Oneiric.
I read on the upstream cups bugtracker that there was an ipp-related fix in 1.5
trunk, but did not manage to compile it successfully for testing purposes.

I attached the two files you requested.

2012-03-11 Thread Maximilian Federle
In the meantime I successfully compiled cups 1.5 trunk and installed to
/opt/cups.
It complained about not being able to run cups-deviced though and so I couldn't
test whether the problem persists...

Maybe it would be a possibility to triage this bug if you could provide
me with some info on how to run 1.5 trunk on precise?!

[Bug 951627] [NEW] all Kyocera network printers stopped working with cups 1.5.2

2012-03-10 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

Two Kyocera printers, the FS 1320D and the FS C1020 MFP refuse to print with
cups 1.5.2 delivered in precise.
They are supported by the manufacturer and work as expected in oneiric and cups
1.5.0.

However in Precise as of now, the printer's status led starts to blink
and never goes into ready state again. The printer hangs and has to be
powered off and on again in order to make it work with some other
computer.

This is a very serious issue, as this possibly renders the whole
business grade Kyocera lineup unusable on Precise.

[Bug 941884] [NEW] windows vanish when alt-dragged from semi-maximized states

2012-02-27 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

i) steps to reproduce:

1) open window
2) semi-maximize it by dragging it to the left or right (super + left/right
works as well)
3) drag it upwards by alt-clicking on it

ii) what is expected to happen:

- the window should unstick from the borders, just as it does when you
drag a fully maximized window from the top

iii) what actually happens:

- the window vanishes from the user's sight onto a different workspace.
The launcher itself however insists that the window is still on this
workspace.

- the drag-hand icon is still displayed, while the window itself is not
visible

iv) illustration

I have attached a video showing the occurence. I can confirm the same
behaviour with my Intel notebook as well as without the unity plugin
enabled.

[Bug 941884] Re: windows vanish when alt-dragged from semi-maximized states

2012-02-27 Thread Maximilian Federle
as I just noticed this is most likely closely related to Bug #937665.
Both show this incredible pointer/window offset after the drag. Nonetheless
both bugs describe different scenarios and the outcome of this bug is way more
likely to astonish the user as the window completely jumps out of sight.

[Bug 907464] Re: top panel should not go over fullscreen window in multi-monitor case

2012-02-27 Thread Maximilian Federle
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 734908 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/734908

I believe the duplicate status is wrong. This bug here describes a
situation where the panel and launcher appear on the fullscreen window
AFTER it loses focus, whereas bug #734908 is dealing with general
misbehaviour resulting in a situation where the panel and launcher
always appear over the fullscreen window.

[Bug 938788] Re: Launcher edge detection still occurs on when autohide is set to off

2012-02-22 Thread Maximilian Federle
IMHO the edge resistance should only be there when the left button is held
while e.g dragging a window.
May be harder though to use the overlay scrollbar in maximized windows then...
