[Bug 841409] Re: GEdit is the only choice as Calendar application in Default Applications dialog

2013-03-28 Thread Nathan Williams
hey folks: there's a blueprint you can subscribe to in order to keep up
to date with progress on calendar integration with the default install.
see: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-p-calendar-
integration.

fwiw, i agree that this is a major pain point for most users, even
though it's minor relative to show-stoppers like application crashing.
however, this is the wrong forum for those concerns. this bug is about a
defect in gnome-control-center causing it to show something unreasonable
when there isn't a reasonable option available. anything not directly
related is a distraction that makes the bug harder to understand, and
therefore fix.

for now, the bug has been reported upstream. once fixed there, it
benefits everyone, not just Ubuntu. hugs all around. ;)

cheers.

Hi Ronald,

Sorry about the seemingly abrupt responses last night, I was typing on
my phone. Did you get this sorted out?

Regards,

Nathan

Michael G. Noll, dated August 5, 2007 (last updated: June 29, 2012) .
The part where I am having problems is to get the SSH set up by
connecting to the local machine with the hduser user. I keep getting
the following message:

no4@no4-PCV-RX550-UC:~$ ssh localhost
ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused
no4@no4-PCV-RX550-UC:~$

I have run through a number of steps to make sure I have both the

still run into the same error message. What am I missing?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yep. Try ssh -p . If that doesn't work, please show the full firewall rules.

Cheers,

I just had a job interview, and was surprised by some of the perceptions a

Has anyone else run into this? similar weird perceptions?

With GUI tools, a lot of people fall into 3 groups:
1. Needs GUI, can't add a user without it.
2. Uses GUI, goes into command line if needed.
3. Uses the same commands that have worked for the last 40 years.

-Bop

That seems accurate. I'd group myself into category 2 for daily usage,
but the concept of requiring GUI tools to administer a server seems odd
to me, and the insinuation that being an Ubuntu user makes a person more
likely to fall into that category irked me a bit. maybe my troll
detection is just miscalibrated.

Thanks, Scott. I look forward to reading your write-up. I'm looking at picking
up a new laptop later this year, and am currently torn between lenovo and a
macbook. I'm sure your writeup will come in handy to many folks looking at
running ubuntu on the newer hardware.

 Hi all,

comfortable keyboard) and am beginning to contemplate buying a MacBook
Air and running Linux natively on it (i.e, wipe OS X completely from it).

I've found this help.ubuntu.com page which suggests that 12.04 works
well on last year's MB Air:

 https://help.ubuntu.com/**community/MacBookAir4-2https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir4-2

However, I'm not finding any information about this year's Intel Ivy

Can anyone point me to reliable information or personal experience with
 this?

As a follow-up I've successfully installed and am running 12.04 natively
on the MBA. I've written up the process in the Apple Users subforum of
 Ubuntu Forums:

 http://ubuntuforums.org/**showthread.php?t=2039799http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2039799

There's a fair bit to do post-install, but it pretty straightforward and
is mostly the same as what you'd do on the 2011 MBA.

Hi Scott,

The ultrabook you describe is a pretty close thing to the Dell Sputnik
[1] project (minor RAM upgrade and you're there). Though the official
offering from Dell isn't until later, you can download the customized
Ubuntu image for it now if you were to pick up one of the Dell 13 XPS
ultrabooks. They had one of these on display at OSCON, and it looked
really nice.

For more info on the MBP support, you can check out the wiki on MacBook
Pros [2], and searching on askubuntu.com. It seems that knowing the
exact version (8,1...) makes a difference. Phoronix has a review [3] of
the Ivy Bridge under Linux, which I understand to be pretty well supported.

Sadly, it doesn't look like anyone's contributed a hardware profile for
the macbook pro to Ubuntu Friendly [4] yet. :( If you end up getting
one, you should try to be the first!

Nathan W

[Bug 1002443] Re: php5-fpm exposes full ubuntu package version in headers

2012-05-22 Thread Nathan Williams
@bkerensa, thanks for the constructive contribution to the
conversation... i discussed this with a couple folks in #ubuntu-server
and one of the Ubuntu php maintainers, and filed this with their
feedback.

@all, i'm well aware that security by obscurity is no solution, but as
noted by Francois in the linked Debian bug, shipping sane defaults is a
reasonable expectation. Advertising the full package version by default
just makes it easy for scans to identify vulnerable targets. this is
clearly irrelevant in a targeted attack, but it could keep you off a
low-hanging-fruit list generated by malicious scanning, which i find to
be of value.

So the question should be: what's the value in advertising this
information by default? As noted in the bug description, I think php
version information similar to the information provided by Apache,
Nginx, etc. does make sense to an extent, just not listing the full
package name.

I'll agree with Francois in the linked bug, this is ultimately the
maintainers decision, and I'll respect the decision, though I think that
a pro vs. con analysis comes down clearly on the side of a better
default, be that normalized version info or turning expose_php off.

be of value.

So the question should be: what's the value in advertising this
information by default? As noted in the bug description, I think php
version information similar to the information provided by Apache,
Nginx, etc. does make sense to an extent, just not listing the full
package name.

I'll agree with Francois in the linked bug, this is ultimately the
maintainers decision, and I'll respect the decision, though I think that
a pro vs. con analysis comes down clearly on the side of a better
default, be that normalized version info or turning expose_php off.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for reporting this bug, and helping make Ubuntu better.

I assume you were using the nouveau driver before? It would be helpful
to know what graphics driver and specific graphics card you were using
when you experienced the issue.

If you're still experiencing this issue, please provide additional
details, and set the bug status back to New.

Thanks!

[Bug 991502] [NEW] Unity Dash non-responsive on re-search

2012-04-29 Thread Nathan Williams
Public bug reported:

Unity Dash exhibits counter-intuitive behavior when attempting to re-
launch a recently launched application.

Steps to replicate:

1) open the Dash
2) type to search for an application, e.g. term for terminal
3) hit enter to open the terminal (it defaults to first result)
4) exit terminal
5) re-open the dash, observe that the dash saved the last search phrase, and
focus appears to be in the search
6) hit enter without touching the dash to relaunch terminal
7) nothing happens, you have to clear the search box to re-search, or arrow
down to actually select the terminal application fromt he returned results

Expected behavior:
1) hitting enter without changing search field content will do the same thing
as original search

[Bug 102512] Re: [needs-packaging] Aptana Studio

2012-04-29 Thread Nathan Williams
so i'm reviewing the licensing on Aptana Studio, and it appears that
Aptana does not want Aptana Studio being redistributed.

The Aptana Public License is designed to allow you the freedom to use Aptana
products without restriction, except for redistribution. We at Aptana wan
t you to not only use Aptana for web development, but also freely share
scripts, snippets, websites and other items with friends and coworkers, and to
encourage others to use and adopt Aptana as well. However, we require that you
do not redistribute the Aptana Studio itself. If you are interested in
redistributing Aptana or have a question, please contact us at
lice...@aptana.com.
Aptana Public License - 1.0

I need to find someone who is familiar with licensing to see if we are
going to be able to pursue this, or if this is a non-starter.

[Bug 950898] Re: Startup Applications dialog typo

2012-04-24 Thread Nathan Williams
hi kroq-gar78,

the fix you committed should be sufficient (fix the source of the typo),
and if merged will be propagated through the translations. As such, I
hope you don't mind, I went ahead and proposed that your branch be
merged, since the fix seems legit.

regards,

[Bug 978118] Re: system settings installation ambiguous

2012-04-24 Thread Nathan Williams
so, the issue here seems to be that there are 2 packages that are easily
confused in Software Center.

The first is gnome-control-center, which is the System Settings
application that is installed by default, and shows up in the Dash, but
is listed in Software center with the title of utilities to configure
the GNOME desktop

the second is systemsettings, which is NOT installed by default, but is
listed in software-center with the *same name and icon* as gnome-
control-center has in the dash (but not in software-center).

IIRC, this is a big usability problem, and frankly confused me quite
badly before i read the version details in software center.

My opinion is that the right fix for this issue is to have gnome-
control-center more closely resemble it's installed appearance in
software-center (suggest changed title and icon to match those used in
Dash). This would then lead to 3(!) results for System Settings search
term, but at least the most likely candidate would be returned in the
results.

Re: What can we improve on the LoCo Website?

In a effort to grow our ranks here in Oregon I want to do everything
possible to make sure we are reaching as many Oregonians as possible
through every venue available to us especially on the web. One thing I
think needs improvement is our site could use prominent placement of
widgets or links to our social media pages so we can grow our
followers in those crucial areas.

I'm asking for input on any changes you might think we need to make to
improve our chances of increasing participation statewide!

Here is a screenshot from Google Analytics:

Notably we are getting visits from almost every college in the state
and a handful of K-12 school districts and of course all the major
tech companies.

Great question, Ben!

I think we need to work more on pointing people to the excellent
existing resources and introductory materials that exist. There's a LOT
of really good documentation that's been produced, but newcomers can
have a hard time finding it.

this is our community, we know it very well, and part of the purpose of
a LoCo is to be a signpost for those just realizing that we exist.

I'd suggest that we focus on the following areas:

 - introductory materials (who/what is Ubuntu, where/how can i get/use it)
 - learning more ( software exploration, community (news, activities,
social stuff), documentation )
 - dealing with problems (where to get help, how to ask good
questions, how to troubleshoot)
 - contributing ( promotion (events), testing, support (irc/askubuntu),
documentation (doc-squad, wiki, forum, tutorials), ideas (blueprints))

i'm not suggesting that we produce the documentation, there would be no
point, as it already exists. I do think that providing an index of the
best available resources in each of these areas would be a great way to
attract people to Ubuntu Oregon, while providing a needed service to the
community.

Nathan Williams

[Bug 887650] Re: Upgrade to older releases

2012-03-06 Thread Nathan Williams
so in looking at this, it seems that the shell script data/apt-cdrom-
check is responsible (used as helper script) for determining if the
media contains a valid upgrade source, so that seems the correct place
to fix this.

I'm not sure though what the best method to go about that would be.

looking at an 11.10 cd, i see the .disk/info path contains some
version/release information that could be used to make a comparison
agains /etc/lsb-release on the base system, but i'm not sure if older
releases also had the .disk/info on the install media, or if it would be
preferable to carry an array of some md5's of the older media?

i'm going to see about snagging some older ubuntu releases to look at
and see whether .disk/info is even a good option.
