[Bug 817296] Re: Diagonal streaks when printing some images

2011-08-04 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
No problem!

Actually the bug against foo2zjs should be posted in the upstream forum,
perhaps it can be improved.
Are you willing to do that? Would be nice if you could post a link to the
upstream discussion in this bug report so we can follow up.

Also feel free to report in this bug report, after doing more printing,
if one of the suggested free drivers matches or gives better quality
than the Samsung proprietary driver and you would use as default.

[Bug 817993] Re: Provide drivers for Canon ir3035

2011-07-31 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Unfortunately the license (those small printed letters you need to
agree) of the Canon drivers do not allow us to include these drivers
into Ubuntu.

But fortunately these kind of business machines usually support multiple
printer languages, with some input from you we could consider adding this
printer to the foomatic-db with what you (after some testing) think is the best
open/free licensed driver. By doing this your printer will be automatically
detected in future Ubuntu versions.
I looked up the specifications of the ir3035 on the canon website and this
model should support PCL 6/5e using the UFR II/PCL Printer Kit-S1 board with
optional PS Printer Kit-S1 for PostScript 3 Emulation.
If you have the optional PS kit, you should be able to use the PPD file from
Canon (or Generic PostScript).
If you don't have the PS kit please try the different PCL 6/5e drivers offered
under the manufacturer Generic. Especially try the PCL-6/XL printer with
Foomatic/pxlmono and the PCL-5e printer with Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e.
Which driver gives the best print quality and which the best printing speed and
does it offer you all the printing options you need? How do these compare to
the original Canon driver?

[Bug 802285] Re: PPD-O-MATIC'ally generated driver for Lexmark E120/E120n not working

2011-07-31 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
The PPD you provided contains some errors (as seen in your CupsErrorLog output)
and the license of this file doesn't allow changing:
$ LANG=C cupstestppd lex120n.ppd
lex120n.ppd: FAIL
  **FAIL** Bad Resolution choice PrinterS!
REF: Page 84, section 5.9
  **FAIL** Bad Resolution choice 1200IQ!
REF: Page 84, section 5.9

Actually the driver was changed from pxlmono to Postscript starting with
maverick (see bug #548747).

But fortunatelly the other drivers are still there, you can change them in
System Administration Printing (system-config-printer) Make and model
Change ... Lexmark E120n or create several new printing queues with
different drivers. Can you try the pxlmono (previous recommended driver, is it
very slow with graphics as mentioned in bug #548747?), hpijs-pcl5e (this is
currently the recommended driver for the E120 without network) and ljet4
(recommended in bug #548747, ljet4d is for duplex) drivers?
Which driver gives the best print quality (try text/lineart/graphics) and which
the best printing speed? Can you make an ordered list of the drivers starting
with the driver you think works best to worst or not at all. How does it
compare to the PPD file you added to this bug report?
Also does this printer support automatic double sided printing (duplex)?
Optional module?

[Bug 817296] Re: Diagonal streaks when printing some images

2011-07-30 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Ok, so now that you have installed upstream foo2qpdl it is better to
report this issue in the upstream forum.

Please note that there are drivers other than foo2qpdl that could work
for this printer.

Could you try Samsung CLP-300 with the SpliX driver. Note that the SpliX
package coming with Ubuntu does not work, as potentially patented stuff
got removed there. So use the driver packages on
http://www.openprinting.org/driver/splix/ or compile from upstream. Does
this work for you?

I also looked up the specifications of the 325w and this wifi model also
supports PCL 6/5c, so this could give better results.
Please try the different PCL6/5c drivers offered under the manufacturer
Generic. Especially try the PCL-6/XL printer with Foomatic/pxlcolor and the
PCL-5c printer with Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5c. Which ones work?

Which driver gives the best print quality and which the best printing
speed? Better results compared to clp-315 foo2qpdl?

Unfortunately I see you already deleted and readded the printer before
reporting this bug.

I created a printer with the Brother MFC-7225N BR-Script3 driver and

Are you still able to reproduce this problem? To further investigate we
would need you to add the problematic PPD from /etc/cups/ppd to this bug
report and provide the output of system-config-printer --debug after
trying to change the driver on a terminal.

[Bug 444280] Re: OK button not enabled after adding printer

2011-07-29 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
1) The printer properties dialog is displaying again in Ubuntu 11.04
(system-config-printer-gnome 1.3.1+20110222-0ubuntu16.3) when asked to
print a test page and clicking OK right after creating a new print
queue, so reopening.

2) Apart from that the intentional grayed out OK button of the printer
properties dialog seems to be different to what is mentioned in the
GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (http://developer.gnome.org/hig-
book/3.0/hig-book.html#windows-explicit-apply) and what people expect.
Also have a look at bug #576348 which is the same issue. The printer
properties dialog Apply-Cancel-OK buttons should follow the HIG.

birdy,

What exactly is the issue for system-config-printer (System
Administration Printing), can you add the printer? The color
management profiles/cms are not included into the splix package, but
these are only needed for better results and should not prevent you from
printing (also try grayscale mode). If it prevents you from printing
please add your cups error log after trying to print as described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#CUPS_error_log

Which version of the splix package is installed on your system? Please run the

Note that CUPS printer names may not contain slashes so they are filtered out.

[Bug 779465] [NEW] Multiple identical drivers for PostScript printers

2011-05-08 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

When adding a printer using cups webinterface multiple identical PostScript
drivers are listed for my HP LaserJet 4000N (see screenshot).
Running lpinfo -m in a terminal shows this is the case for other PostScript
printers too.
This makes a user wonder which one (s)he has to choose, there should only be
one PostScript driver or if there are multiple they should have a different
name.

[Bug 777335] [NEW] Better naming for Printing menu entry

2011-05-04 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

I'm using Natty with Unity.

Searching for a tool to set up my printer in the dash returns Bezig met
afdrukken (I'm Dutch but this means Busy printing), this clearly is a
translation error (which seems to be corrected already in rosetta) but
perhaps the english menu entry Printing should be changed into
something better like Set up printers. Also this change would be much
better since it appears in the Gnome Control Center under Hardware:
Session Indicator Menu System settings

In maverick and before this menu entry was under System Administration
 Printing

[Bug 672314] Re: No translated package descriptions for -updates repository

2011-05-02 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Situation in Ubuntu 11.04 / natty:

$ LANG=C apt-cache policy evince
evince:
  Installed: 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.1
  Candidate: 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.1
  Version table:
 *** 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.1 0
500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/main i386
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.32.0-0ubuntu12 0
500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages

$ apt-cache show evince
My locale is set to Dutch, above command returns English package descriptions
for 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.1 from natty-updates and Dutch for 2.32.0-0ubuntu1 from
the release repository as expected.

The archive should have a i18n directory for the natty-updates repository or
apt should be adapted to use the translations from the release repository
(natty) so translated package descriptions are displayed for updates too in
apt-cache, software-center, synaptic, ...
I tested by copying
/var/lib/apt/lists/be.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_i18n_Translation-nl
 to
/var/lib/apt/lists/be.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty-updates_main_i18n_Translation-nl
and then translated package descriptions are displayed.

[Bug 672314] Re: No translated package descriptions for -updates repository

Hi Torsten,
It's difficult to test right now in natty since there are no packages in
-updates yet, I'll have to wait until natty has been released and there are
some updates available...
Also I don't think that the mentioned commit is related to this problem since
the apt package on my maverick system already included this commit at the time
I reported this bug.

[Bug 602284] Re: Administration - Printing - Add requires 'root' user

2011-02-13 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
In Ubuntu and Debian you just need to add the user to the lpadmin group to add
printers, modify settings, etc for cups.
Normally the first user has been granted this permission.
Did you install Ubuntu from desktop live cd? Are you the first user?

This is an old bug, Intrepid and Jaunty are no longer supported.
Is this still an issue in Ubuntu 10.04 or higher?

[Bug 275074] Re: Job does not get past authentication

2011-02-13 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
This is an old bug, Intrepid is no longer supported.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and
your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a
lot if you could test in Ubuntu 10.04 or higher. If it is still an issue, we
would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect
bug #, and your cups error_log as described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#CUPS%20error_log

[Bug 718201] Re: printing an utf8-file from gedit causes some wrong letters

2011-02-13 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Why are you using the HP Color LaserJet CP1510 Series Postscript (recommended)
driver?
Same problem if you use the specific printer driver for your printer:
drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-color_laserjet_cp1515n-hpijs-pcl3.ppd HP Color LaserJet
cp1515n hpijs pcl3, 3.10.6 ?
