[Bug 1273484] [NEW] nagios-plugins renamed to monitoring-plugins
Public bug reported: This project was forced to change its name because of a trademark assertion (see https://www.monitoring-plugins.org/news/new-project- name.html), so the package name, upstream URL in the package description, and possibly other references to the old name will need to be updated. See Debian Bug #736331 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=736331 and Red Hat Bug #1054340 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1054340 for more details and discussion. Changes to file paths might be appropriate, but would break several things, so some discussion about that will be needed, possibly with some symlinks for a few releases or some such. I expect the details are best worked out upstream in Debian rather than creating a delta, but it seems like we need a bug report on Ubuntu as well since changes may need to happen before the Trusty release, particularly since it's LTS. This affects all versions of Ubuntu at this point, but it's probably most sane to only change things for Trusty and releases after that at this point, IMO. Upgrades from previous releases to Trusty or later should replace the old package with the new name (the Red Hat bug has lots of discussion about upgrade paths - it may be worthwhile to talk with Sam Kottler so Ubuntu/Debian end up with similar behavior to Red Hat/CentOS/Fedora in this respect). This also affects the dependencies of several other packages, such as nagios3-common, icinga-common, shinken-common, and probably others. ** Affects: nagios-plugins (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: nagios-plugins (Debian) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: nagios-plugins (Fedora) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #736331 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=736331 ** Also affects: nagios-plugins (Debian) via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=736331 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #1054340 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1054340 ** Also affects: nagios-plugins (Fedora) via https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1054340 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nagios-plugins in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1273484 Title: nagios-plugins renamed to monitoring-plugins To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nagios-plugins/+bug/1273484/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I took your source package, and was correctly asked the high question but not the low question on initial installation (as my debconf priority is set to high). A reasonable guess. Turns out it was actually because earlier versions of my package didn't remove cleanly, so the settings were still marked as seen in the debconf database - manually removing them made everything fine thereafter. Random other things I noticed whilst looking at your source package: * Do not call db_go after every db_input - instead, call db_go only after a batch of several db_input. This allows debconf frontends capable of presenting multiple questions on-screen simultaneously to do so. Aaah, that makes sense. I'd heard both ways, but not why. * Do not use Depends: debconf, dh_installdebconf will add the correct form of debconf dependency via ${misc:Depends}. Good catch - thanks. * Do not use service to invoke initscripts from package maintainer scripts. Instead follow Debian policy: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s9.3.3.2 Okay. Debconf help
So I'm taking my first stab at implementing debconf in a package, and having some hangups. Currently I have it such that running dpkg-reconfigure on my package will work just fine, but the questions are not asked during initial installation. There are two questions - one with a low priority and the other with high; neither are asked when installing. Anyone care to enlighten me as to what I'm doing wrong? The package can be found in my PPA (tonyyarusso/ppa), https://edge.launchpad.net/~tonyyarusso/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/1241047/+listing-archive-extra I'd also be open to any other criticisms / improvements you have to offer - I know it still has a long way to go to meet your normal standards. The serial comma is absolutely required, especially in technical writing, as it is the only means of providing clarity in otherwise ambiguous situations. While this particular sentence would still be understandable without it, consistency is key in documentation. [Bug 492206] [NEW] No way to tell what type an install CD is from its contents
Public bug reported: I frequently burn an Ubuntu installation CD, use it, and then promptly manage to leave it laying around somewhere in my house neglecting to properly label it first. Later, I pop it in to see what it is, and while I can tell that it's Ubuntu, I don't know for sure exactly which image it is. I would like to propose that all information necessary to establish what the original image name/type was should be easily accessible in the contents of the image itself. *Most* of what is needed is accomplished already in the README.diskdefines file, such as #define DISKNAME Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release i386. However, there are two problems remaining. First, there is no differentiation between the desktop, alternate, and server CDs in this line. Second, it would be nice if the different items were also written separately just to be more easily programatically readable, in case someone needed that capability. Thus, I propose that at a minimum a line should be added to README.diskdefines or another appropriate top-level file with a declaration along the lines of CDVARIANT Alternate. That combined with existing things would satisfy the basic needs outlined in my first point. What would be ideal IMO to take care of the second too would be something that looks like this: #define DISKNAME Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release i386 #define TYPE binary #define TYPEbinary 1 #define ARCH i386 #define ARCHi386 1 #define DISKNUM 1 #define DISKNUM1 1 #define TOTALNUM 0 #define TOTALNUM0 1 #define DISTRO Ubuntu #define VERS 9.10 #define MILESTONE Release #define CODENAME Karmic Koala #define CDVARIANT Alternate (ARCH is already mentioned separately.) Note that I don't really understand all of what the README.diskdefines file does or the inner workings of the disk images and installer - I just noticed that most of the info I want happens to be in that file, so it would make sense to me to elaborate on it there. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- No way to tell what type an install CD is from its contents https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/492206 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 475816] [NEW] No bell/alert sound in Karmic
Public bug reported: I did a fresh install of Karmic. My sound in general works. However, I no longer have any alert sounds for things like irssi hilights. [Bug 469354] [NEW] popularity-contest should be enabled by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: popularity-contest The entire purpose of the popularity-contest package is to collect statistics. In order for statistics to be useful, they need to come from a significant sample size representative of a population. Currently the sample is neither significant nor representative, as it is a relatively few people who have self-selected themselves to be in that group. The results therefore are likely to be heavily skewed towards more technical users, individuals versus group deployments, and people from wealthier economic backgrounds that have time to fritter away looking at popcon data out of curiosity (in addition to the developers with a legitimate interest). In short, unless popcon is enabled by default, the statistics from it will continue to be invalid and of very little use, or worse, substantially misleading. Since the stated purpose of those statistics is to guide future Ubuntu development, that is a serious problem. Now, some people may raise privacy concerns with this sort of thing. To address that, we need to make sure that it is clear that the data is submitted anonymously, and that every effort is made to keep it so. (eg. the server shouldn't keep IP address logs at all) As long as there is no way of ever connecting the data to an individual user or machine, there should be no problem with the data existing for the community as a whole. ** Affects: popularity-contest (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- popularity-contest should be enabled by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/469354 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 469935] [NEW] Don't ask for password on login option is unavailable
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm On both a fresh 9.10 installation and an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, under System Administration Users and Groups, Add User, there is an option shown in the dialogue labelled Don't ask for password on login, but it is greyed out and can not be selected. I do not know whether it worked on previous versions. The fix appears to be a combination of creating a group called nopasswdlogin and changing some configuration files relating to gdm and pam. The addition of the group is sufficient to bring the checkbox into focus, but the gdm/pam changes are necessary for it to actually work. The details of these fixes can be found in the latest comments on Bug #396459, but I believe this to be separate from the issue that bug was originally filed to address. Of note they link to http://www.danellis.co.uk/drupal/node/7 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=12777page=2 for the relevant information. Re: Girl gets Ubuntu on a Dell by mistake, absolutely hates it...
Honestly, I don't think this is Ubuntu's fault, nor something that can possibly be addressed. It is absolutely true that we need to make the experience as comfortable and intuitive as possible for people looking to switch, or who just don't care what OS they have, but it's fairly absurd to expect someone who _wanted_ Windows to be okay with Ubuntu. This is especially true considering that they _paid_ extra for Windows, so if that isn't delivered, there is a problem, but it's a problem with Dell, not Ubuntu. I'm also inclined to think this is a user that can't be catered to properly by any operating system, and some of the other points of the article are either misrepresented there, or incorrect information was given in the first place. -- Tony Yarusso http://tonyyarusso.com/ -- ubuntu-desktop mailing list ubuntu-desktop@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop

[Bug 304924] [NEW] Bluetooth instructions are extremely confusing and disorganized
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs Current behavior: The page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BluetoothSetup currently has a mismash of instructions for numerous versions of Ubuntu, without clear delineation of which instructions are applicable to which versions. Specifically, notes about how to make a device re-connect after a reboot are unclear. Desired behavior: There should be a breakdown of the page by release for any instructions that are different between the oldest and newest supported version. Additionally, there should be notes about what should work in an ideal scenario and then possible workarounds for specific problems. Background: I'm trying to use a bluetooth mouse with my desktop computer, via a USB dongle. The dongle is recognized just fine. However, in 8.04 I can't find any GUI method of connecting to the mouse (although 'hidd --search' works), while in 8.10 the applet is okay. In both cases I lose connection upon a reboot. With 8.04 I was able to work around this using the instructions involving editing /etc/default/bluetooth, in the HIDD_OPTIONS parameter. In 8.10 that line does not exist in the config file, so I have to delete and re-add the device in the applet. Both of the workarounds I used on 8.04 seem to be listed as only applying to releases older than 7.10, which clearly is not the case. ** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Bluetooth instructions are extremely confusing and disorganized https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/304924 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Mail server clarifications
Hi, I've been reading various wiki pages and whatnot, but I'm still having a little bit of trouble wrapping my head around the differences between various mail server software. I've been trying to figure out things like MTA, MDA, etc., and it also seems like some packages are a mix of both, so I'd just really appreciate it if someone could take the time to explain in super-simple terms how everything relates (either by mail or IRC - I'm in #ubuntu-server as tonyyarusso with an always-connected screen session). Generals would be a good start, and in terms of any specifics things I'd be interested in knowing more about include: postfix exim4 dovecot courier procmail cyrus qmail -- Tony Yarusso http://tonyyarusso.com/ -- ubuntu-server mailing list ubuntu-server@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server More info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam

Combined status/logout/etc.
I like it. First, after the various ideas about how to deal with the logout dialogue, this is a solution that works well for me - even one less click than before. Second, I really like the idea of desktop integration stuff, and would like to see much more of telepathy. One request though - could we please get scaled down versions of the icons for the shut down, logout, restart, suspend, and hibernate actions and put them in that dropdown? (In the same manner as the icons up by Busy, Available, and Away.) They were pretty, and having seven menu options in a row with no icon is a bit drab. I'd also suggest making an icon for Lock Screen, and then moving that down with the group at the bottom - it belongs better with things like suspend and log out than next to Offline, don't you think? I'm fine with the guest session entry lacking an icon though, both because it would be hard to make a sensible icon for it and because it's the longest entry by character count, but that should be the only one. Again, nice work whomever is behind this. -- Tony Yarusso http://tonyyarusso.com/ -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
Re: User Switcher, Shutdown Options, IM Status
I'll certainly add a vote against the new logout dialogue stuff. Honestly, until I remembered this sort of thing being discussed in the past I couldn't figure out how to shut down, since I haven't used the System menu to do so for so long. (Incidentally the button doesn't actually work for me and I have to use a command, but that's a different issue.) Six buttons together may look cluttered to some, but it's still less cluttered than six buttons spread across two different places, with no apparent connection between the two. As for status updates and the like, I've long wished things were more integrated. (See https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/gaim-calendar-auto-aways for one of my ideas that still isn't implemented.) Besides just Pidgin and Empathy, it would be nice if there was something I could hook into through other means, such as an irssi script, so that absolutely everything could be connected. Make there be ways to hook up ping.fm, twitter, and identi.ca to it. Make it connected to hamster-applet activities. You get the idea - have a truly central place for this information, since it's increasingly being used in different ways. And I'd still love to see someone jump on hooking up Evolution, Thunderbird, and Google calendars to it. :) -- Tony Yarusso http://tonyyarusso.com/ -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

The release candidate and final dates for OOo 3 were originally set to Jul 25th and Sep 2 respectively, but OOo has slipped a lot from those dates. OOo 3.0rc1 is still not released yet, it is currently expected to be released on Sept 8 which puts the final release around Oct 20. Re: Disappointed with Ubuntu Server, could be used by such a wider audience
On Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 8:14 PM, Anthony Watters [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The Ubuntu server should come in two offerings; i.e. the unfriendly existing Ubuntu server, and, more importantly to the masses, a friendly pre-configured Ubuntu server that uses SME Server (http://smeserver.com) and ClarkConnect (http://clarkconnect.com) as a starting point only not crippled, and much better. a) It's not unfriendly to those who run servers and know how these things are supposed to work. b) Servers absolutely should not come pre-configured, as that would mean that they were full of bloat and unnecessary applications (along with the security risks of having too many ports open), and would likely not be correctly configured for anyone. c) I don't know what SME Server even is, since they don't have a functional web site. Why would I trust anything like that? d) ClarkConnect looks largely like what I mentioned in b) - installing everything by default so you have as much bloat and open entry points as possible, something no server admin would touch with a 20-foot pole. It is only a matter of time before people start running servers from home (check out Windows Home Server and no doubt Apple will have something up its sleeves before very long too). Ubuntu server should be leading the way and definitely before Microsoft cooks up its next bit of mischief. The last thing people want is to have to mess around down in the bowels to configure the thing (should be easy). Most people use them for things like sharing files, which can be accomplished just as easily from a standard desktop installation if that's what you're going for. Also, Apple already has all the server functions built in, in a similar manner to Ubuntu - they just don't call it Home Server Edition and charge more for it. The server section of the 2007 The Official Ubuntu Book is way too vague too and designed to scare people from using the server. Server documentation is designed to teach server administrators how to use a new piece of software, not new home users how to become server administrators. What you are looking for is running an Ubuntu system that happens to perform some server functions, not an Ubuntu server. Those are in fact different things. Preconfigure the thing, give it a GUI web admin, make it easy for someone to set up a Web server/Webmail/File server either in server only mode or server and gateway mode. All I should need to set up is a couple of users, provide the IP address and say whether I want RAID and maybe how I want the partitions configured (but with suggested recommendations along the way at every step). I still don't know what you mean by preconfigure. Shall someone from Canonical come out to survey my setup and interview me about my needs, go back to their office and configure it, then ship it out to me? No configuration will be shared from one user to another, so shipping anything by default would be worthless. If you need someone else to configure it, you want to hire an Ubuntu server administration consultant. Agreed with other posters that eBox would be worth a look for you, and that the ServerGUI wiki page would be a good read to start with. -- Tony Yarusso http://tonyyarusso.com/ -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Re: NEW Packages process
This is another response from the beginner packager's POV. When I first submitted my package, probably four or five different people looked at it, and every one of them found something different to comment on. The process was fairly nerve-wracking and I lost some sleep since I was close to the freeze deadline, but the result was a better package. Even then, having a watch file wasn't caught until more recently. Some of the comments given were critical kinds of items, but others were more subjective, informational kinds of things, and by getting the input of lots of people I learned a lot more about the packaging process overall than I would have with just one, or even two. So, while we _could_ probably get by with one ACK, I don't think it would be the most beneficial way of doing things. -- Tony Yarusso http://tonyyarusso.com/ -- Ubuntu-motu mailing list Ubuntu-motu@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-motu

Additionally, support was added for syncing Gmail contacts, an often- requested feature. In order that we might ship as few bugs as possible and deliver the most sought-after features reasonably possible, I think it would be highly beneficial to include those changes in 8.04, especially given its LTS status. I have not testing building and installing myself, but have been following the Conduit development mailing list and there do not appear to be any regressions that have been mentioned there.
