Did you got the XPS from the BE dell website, or did you import it?
Their website was not clear whether the BE part sold the latest model, or

Re: [Ubuntu-be] ubuntu-be

2013-09-13 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Okay, so I did some ping-ing and testing...

the ubuntu-be.org domain is from Canonical, and still valid until:
Expiration Date:21-Jan-2014 12:00:19 UTC

when I ping to ubuntu-be.org, I get nothing, no return what so ever.
when I ping to map.ubuntu-be.org, I get a response from: 86.65.39.19.
 (which is our server).

actually visiting ubuntu-be.org or map.ubuntu-be.org isn't working either.

When I navigate to the servers url directly, I get a 404 not found. (Which
is normal, but at least it tells us that the server in itself is still
working.)

So I tried some other connection methods, ftp://ubuntu-be.org is not
available; ssh to ubuntu-be.org doesn't get a response either.
Considering that a whois from ubuntu-be.org tells us that canonical didn't
change any of the settings for that domain since 2011, it's safe to say
that our DNS settings are still in place.

So:

   - Server works
   - Domains is still ours
   - DNS works
   - all our services are unavailable (not just http but also ftp and ssh)

Which leads me to believe that our VPS is having some troubles... Maybe
he's down totally, or it's internal connection went bonkers...

JanC, I believe you've got our settings, root access and whatnot... can you
give us a heads up?

Kind regards

2013-08-08 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Seems to be real.. but there isn't a single bit of info about how it's
deployed and how it functions..
It's fairly impossible to say how big the risk is.. On the other hand:
installing untrusted stuff of which you don't know what it does is always
stupid..

The bot won't get installed by anything else than the end user. Upstream
there will be tests and people looking at the code.
What the end user does is out of their control.

my 2 cents

[Ubuntu-be] CPR on the website

2013-03-19 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
With a fairly big certainty, I can tell that the Ubuntu-be website is dead.
Since Mongolito404 left for Canada there hasn't changed everything.

Our current website uses Drupal 6. The current version of Drupal is 7 and
has changed dramatically.
Since I, nor anybody else on this ML, knows anything about either Drupal 6
or 7, I guess we better make a new website.

I hope that a new website can be a fresh start for U-be as well because
lately it seemed as if we were in hibernate.

I'm willing to make a new design, first in png, then code it to html5. Then
we need to find a CMS.
I see three CMS options:

   - Wordpress
+ Dead easy, and I actually can convert a theme to wordpress in 2hours
   time.
   - Wordpress doesn't have a decent multilanguage system.. Als
   multilanguage systems seem fairly hackerish..

   - Joomla
+ Multi language isn't a real issue here, I think Jurgen knows some
   things about Joomla
   - I don't know Joomla

   - Fork
+ Fork is basically just like folder structure, you can put in whatever
   you want.
   - I've never actually build a site on it.

Thoughts?

   - Content editors for all languages (I want to do a part of Dutch and

   - Somebody who thinks about page structure
   - Somebody with skills in php and the CMS of our choise to rebuild the
   support point system.

I have no thoughts about the technical side, but I do have a thought about
 a new site!
My thought is that anyone that feels he or she can work on that project
should talk to you. I hope you can coordinate a few people to make some
 pages together with you.

And if you have the time to work on this, I already say thanks a million
in advance, on behalf of the whole team. Our web site is vital to our
operation, and without it we can't do much.

 Cheers,
 Jan.

[Ubuntu-be] council resignation

2013-02-20 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hey all

I'm currently a council member, but due to other projects and school I
can't put the time in it that I should..

I've been thinking about this for a while now and I can't justify being a
council member when I can't do the job that I'm supposed to do..
I will still continue to support ubuntu as a member of ubuntu-be and
without a doubt I'll convince people I'm a happy user.

So please accept this resignation, it's not out of anger or anything. It's
just because a lack of time..
Feel free however to contact me for any specific task where I can help out.

I really like that idea Krzysztof!

+1 for the parachute.
Though I'd try making it look a little bolder..

Airdrop idea rox. We should go this way. Imho those + or arrows are too

 Hi folks

We have a usability problem in Software Updater (formerly known as
 Update Manager).

The problem is that when the updates dialog appears by itself, there's
no visual clue that this is an official Ubuntu thing. In Ubuntu 12.10
and earlier, the icon is just a brown box with an orange arrow. And in
Raring right now, it's an A with a progress bar and arrows around it
 - -- again, nothing obviously to do with Ubuntu, and a bit of a non
 sequitur too.

So, it would help if we had a new icon, one which obviously
communicates that these are official updates for Ubuntu.

One possibility that I've suggested is an airdrop -- a wooden box
being lowered by parachute, where either the box or the parachute (but
not both!) features the Ubuntu logo.
 http://www.google.com/search?q=airdroptbm=isch Maybe you have other
 ideas too.

Please post your proposals here, or DeviantArt, or Imgur, or wherever
suits you, and link to them in a reply here.

Let's get something really classy into Ubuntu 13.04.

 Thanks!

Note that the price will be cheaper as the one listed since it's the same

Anyone any ideas about the design?
It would be best to have a new design, since that will sell much
better than the old ones everyone has already.

A new design would be nice, but having T-shirts on time is more
 important...

How long does it take to get new t-shirts printed? That plus some
safety margin would determine how long we can wait for a new design.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu wallpaper Pack

2012-10-12 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hey Rajasegar,

You must know it's the second time in a row that I respond to an artwork
submission like this, but, have you read the branding guidelines?
The Ubuntu community wallpaper branding guidelines (which you can find
here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Documentation/Backgrounds), clearly
state under heading Subject Matter:

*No brand names or trademarks of any kind.*
*No branding assets like “Ubuntu CoF” or text to permit use by derivative
distributions.*
*
*
I'd like to stress the important of these Branding Guidelines. There is
only one way to make Ubuntu look and feel like a coherent OS, and that is
to be strict about everything.
Please do not take this personally as this is just a general comment to
anyone on this mailinglist who is designing wallpapers that they offer up
for submission by the artwork team.

Now, talking about the wallpapers themselves, I like some of the designs in
their. But I feel like the logo and COF are just pasted on their without
any attention to size and position. In some of the designs it's placement
doesn't do it justice. Anyhow, as I said, some of the designs (without the
COF and text) are, in my opinion, really nice.

Kind regards

Finally some time to answer your questions. I didn't count but there are at
least 20 or 30 shirts left. I'll give them a decent count in the weekend of
October 14th. :)
(I won't be going home this weekend due to the fact that I have to color
some circles the weekend afterwards)

As for those who want to know the price:
The shirts normally cost €15 + €2.2 shipping costs. that makes €17.2 in
total.

If anybody else wants one, feel free to drop me a line :)

Writing an ISO from one USB drive to the others takes an aweful amount of
time because it goes through the total 4GBs of memory even when only 700MB
 is written.
Using an ISO file goes a lot faster.

 *Unallocated memory*
 *
 *
When I tried to use the normal Ubuntu 12.04 ISO it resulted in a bootable
700MB partition and 3.3GB of unallocated memory.
I'm going to experiment with 2 partitions on the USB drive, because I
believe that allocating that memory is faster than writing empty space to
 the drive using ddrescue.

I let the program write 3 USB drives the times needed to do that are
roughly: 5 minutes, 2.5 minutes, 3 minutes. Way less than writing from USB
 to USB.
However, you should note that those times are for 700MB ubuntu bootable
 and 3.3GB unallocated.

Claudio, how do you solve this unallocated memory?

 *Blocksize*
 *
 *
One of the other optimizations I made is changing the default block-size
at which ddrescue writes to the usb drives. It turns out that 5MB goes
well, and depending on the harddrive you could crank that up. I'll be
testing some drives here but I am wondering how fast we could get using an
 SSD with optimized blocksize.

(if we can write 4GB in less than 3 minutes we don't need to worry about
 allocating memory)

 *Future steps*
 *
 *

- For now I'm going to change to code to write all drives at once
- Optimze the blocksize even further
- Get rid of a bug that you encounter when you use an ISO instead of a
master drive

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Massive USB multiplier

2012-09-25 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
I like copykitten! It does need a mascot though.. :D

2012/9/25 Jan Bongaerts jbongae...@gmail.com

Being part of the development is way above my capcity, but I can help you
 brainstorm for names.

The first that sprang to mind was Copycat.
You could make varieties of this, like Copylion or copytiger, 'cos it does
it like a boss, or the other way round, Copykitten, because it's such a
 light application.
In the same line, you could say Copybox, because it's a little kinda
dropbox that starts copying everything you put in there.

I'll see what else comes up.

 On 25 September 2012 00:33, Wouter Vandenneucker wouterv...@gmail.comwrote:

 Hi all

As some of you might know, last sunday (yesterday) there was a dipro fair
 in Hasselt.
Since both William (leader USB stick project) and Claudio (leader ISO
project) where present, we talked about the new USB sticks and tried some
 things.

At the moment we're having sticks with 1 single ISO on it and some sticks
with a multiboot of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu on them.
It striked us that we needed a simple way to copy files to the usb
drives. (So we bought a hub at dipro to be able to write more USBcards at
 the same time)
We used ddrescue to copy the image, but having to look for the right
names of the devices and copying them 1 by 1, changing the drive letter was
 a bit cumbersome.

So this evening I set out to simplify that issue.

 *Ultimate goal -* masterstyle
I'm thinking about a small personal project that I've nicknamed black
box. The goal would be that you insert all drives, tell the program what
the master is and it would duplicate that master to all the rest. Ideally,
it would take the right image itself and copy to all drives without user
 input.

I was thinking about a single board computer with only 1 button and an
LED. Pressing the button would make the script run, autoselecting the right
image from the harddrive (sda) and copying it to all usb devices attached
 to it (sd*).
 *
There I fixed it -* hackerstyle
So where are we at after 1 evening of coding?
I made a script called autoDD.sh (if you know a cooler name, please
 shoot!)
I'm not going to bother you all with the code right now, but this is how
 it works:

you launch the script by typing:

 *sudo bash autoDD.sh /Master/Image/Or/Drive*

The script only works if you've got a computer with 1 harddrive (SDA) and
if you've got a USB with the master file on it.
you insert that first, before the empty usb drives. you call the script
 with:

 *sudo bash autoDD.sh /dev/sdb*

Now the script always rejects /dev/sda because I've told it that that is
the default harddrive, then it takes the drive you've provided (/dev/sdb)
and then it copies that content to all other /dev/sd* devices.

 *Things to test
*There are a couple things I need/want to test before releasing the code:

- having a master file in an ISO format.
   - normally the script already works if you want this. You could in
   theory provide autoDD.sh with a /path/to/ISO instead of a /dev/sdb,
 but I
   haven't test it
- speed when writing to more than 1 or 2 USB devices at the same time
   - Again, in theory all should be fine, but I didn't test it.

I'll test these things this week and I'll try to add a failsafe for
people with more harddrives in their computer. (because this script will
ruin your system if you have more than 1 hdd and/or if it isn't sda.

That being said, the script successfully copied the contents of 1 stick
to 2 other sticks during my late night snack, so it does work.
If someone has a better idea to make it a real blackbox (with that I
mean 1 button, 1 LED, tons of USB slots and no screen, mouse or keyboard),
 please give your views..

 Grts

If we sell the same t-shirt on fosdem once again there will not be
much profit (warddr, 19:47:33)
woutervddn likes to point out that not only will they secure the fact

addition to his collection of geek shirts! (woutervddn, 19:47:38)

(hint hint) (woutervddn, 19:50:23)
  *Print/art work (woutervddn, 19:52:36)
jurgen was dreaming about a corporate brochure that states why a
business should use ubuntu (woutervddn, 19:59:30)
woutervddn diggs that idea. he thinks that is really a great addition
(woutervddn, 19:59:51)

about educational software but also about network maintainability

  *USB Sticks (woutervddn, 19:52:36)
kawabill put this on email: Update USB cards; hardware has arrived @
Claudio, we are thinking to install Ubuntu-be possibly together with
Kubuntu and Xubuntu using multi-boot. (woutervddn, 20:03:34)

I'm not really a fan of putting all those distro's on by default..
(woutervddn, 20:04:02)
^woutervddn (woutervddn, 20:04:10)
wouter thinks by default only 1 distro should be on it because that's
already hard enough for new users (woutervddn, 20:05:45)
they could be added if the user wants it, but it's a waste of space
otherwise, maybe they can just install extra window managers on the
same installation (woutervddn, 20:06:42)
warddr points out that it will introduce a lot of redundant
appications

that mixer project?

2012/9/10 Bram Kortleven b...@bramkortleven.be

I still have a box of mixed t-shirts... they must be quite dusty in the
meantime, as I described in an earlier message on the list.
I'm currently reorganising and redecorating my apartment, and that
includes some drywalling works... which involves a lot of dust...

In the previous message, I also said I don't have the time anymore to
organise all Antwerp activities, fair-wise, so the materials that are still
at my place should probably move to someone else's place to be able to use
them at future events and fairs.

 Anyone?

 Thanks

Hey guys,

I went ahead and placed the RoyalWallpaper set on the wiki and put the

Anyone who wants the same wallpaper but in a different color, can just
select the colored red layer and change the color of that to the desired
color.

gimp (excluding opening saving the image))

Re: [Ubuntu-be] where to find this in Belgium ? Asus netbook (EEE 1225C) with Ubuntu 12.04

2012-09-06 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hey YP

I just checked tweakers.net and they also don't list a price. Therefor I
think they might not (yet) be available in NL or BE.
Though I'm not totally sure of it. The Asus website fails to answer that
question as well.

 Hello Dear Ubunteros!

some friend of mine (maybe me too) is looking after the Asus EEE 1225C,
since that machine will come with Ubuntu 12.04 + for a nice price!

It seems to be available in France (Boulanger, Auchan, RueDuCommerce,
Izideal) but I'm not able to find it -until now- in Belgium:

maybe some of you does, and knows more about this ready-to-go
 new/powerfull/quite cheap Ubuntu netbook ?

I first read some info at Forum.Ubuntu-NL.org:

 http://forum.ubuntu-nl.org/algemeen-42/asus-lanceert-nieuw-netbookje-met-ubuntu-12-04/25/

 when found specifications here:
 http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_1225C/

...but in some countries it seems to have already been released in July:
ASUS Quietly Launch New Ubuntu 12.04 Netbook | OMG! Ubuntu!
 http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/06/asus-quietly-launch-new-ubuntu-netbook

 What about Belgium ?

Currently checked stores with no avail-info:
 Media-markt, Carref0ur, Ph0t0hal, Pix-mania, Gobin-Electronix (@Ostend);
have also tried 333 x to call FNAC BE but their telnr. is fake and
 definitely busy!!!

 Any useful tips welcomed!
We're probably 2 persons interested in this EEE if available in Belgium.

 Thanx !

Je zou de laptop ook gewoon altijd in't buitenland kunnen bestellen en hem
laten overkomen..

2012/9/6 Willem Hulscher ubuntuwil...@yahoo.com

Well, in France there was a lawsuit were somebody has won to get his money
back from a windows computer. The case was that it is forbidden to do tying
sales. He did not want to have windows, but there were not other computers
(only Mac ofcourse, but he did not want that either). He bought the
machine, with windows. He complaints with the company that he would not
have the licence of windows. He made it a case. First they judge that you
are not obliged to buy a computer with windows. But that in Cassation they
give him right. It is tying. Than he could have 100 euro back for the
windows. So I think that because of that jurisprudence they started to sale
Linux on computers. Or maybe even with only open dos. In Germany they sell
more and computers with open dos.

In a deeply nested folder, moving the window might be difficult,
because the folder hierarchy would span most of the title bar.

It's odd that the brightest part of the window is an Eject button.

Why did you make all the icons monochrome, both in the sidebar and the
 list view?

[Ubuntu-be] things are stalling

2012-08-18 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hey girls and guys

It's getting really quiet here lately. Without a doubt the fact that it is
vacation and that there are no events isn't helping to increase the
activity here..
However, to get some things going, I'd like to ask all people who are
leading an Ubuntu-be project to reply on this mail and give the mailinglist
an update of what we are doing and how far we are.

To help giving everybody a sense of what we are up to, I'll summarize it:

   1. We're making *USB sticks*, *kawabill *is leading this
   2. We're making a custom *ISO *to go on the sticks and have it available
for download. The project leader is *Claudio*
   3. We're gonna get new *shirts *(same design or something new, you might
start thinking about it already ;)), since I (*wouter*) will be leading
this, you can expect an update after my re-examinations
   4. Further going in to branding, we're thinking about new posters and
other *printwork *(we have some people asking us for that), *Jurgen *is
leading this since he did a terrific job with our roll-ups
   5. *Dipro's *might be getting less and less attention, but we stay
active there since people know we are there and suspect us to!
This is *community *effort, if you're free some day, come and join us,
it's more fun than it is a burden
   6. I (*wouter*) am making an *Ubuntu manual *and it's getting rather
big, but anybody is free to add their contributions!
   7. Our *website *feels like it's been left in the cold, and we wan't to
help it. *Sulumar *is in charge of it but *JanC *and I (*wouter*) are
   happy to assist him!
   8. In addition to that we want to spice up the activity of the landing
page by adding a *Blog*. Now I know *JanC *is willing to put his efforts
in it, but we need a platform to do that.
   9. Our *wiki *is like any wiki: a mess! sorting things out and putting a
little more structure in it is going to be my (*wouter*) job during the
   next year.
But taking one step at a time, we'll leave it in the closet for some
months since we already did a major clean up last year! (it's like cleaning
   a house, you're never done!)
   10. We'll be present at other *events *as well *Software Freedom Day* for
   instance!
*Jurgen *organizes an event at Hackerspace Brussels on September 22th
and *Claudio *is prepping everything for an event in Genk

In addition to all these ongoing projects (well, except the blog, that's
new!) we're even going to ignite some new ones!

   1. We want to start making *Courses *for schools and other people. *JanB
*already gave some lessons and will lead this project together with *
   kawabill*
   2. What we also want to do is turning ourself in a *VZW*, we haven't
assigned anybody yet because we need to get some other things sorted first
   (bank stuff etc)
   3. Now we already talked about a course and a manual, but what about an
actual *Teachers for Ubuntu network*? Well, we're thinking about that
stuff as well! The people from the course project (*JanB and Kawabill*)
will lead this together with *Keltoum*.

Having 13 things on the agenda, we find ourselves in a pretty cool
situation - please spot the ironic temperature joke - with a fairly big
amount of work but also with a super big amount of opportunity. I hope this
sparks your curiosity, because with the right spirit - yes, all three mars
rovers are in this email by name - we can turn this year in an amazing
succes. And this because we are on the verge of what might be the
most interesting year in OS history since the invention of the GUI!

keep yourself cool and kind regards

[Ubuntu-be] Manual

2012-07-16 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hey guys

I shorted some chapters to get the manual v1.0 ready by tomorrow morning.
In the end I'm not so pleased with the lack of visual stuff in the first
chapters and the short last chapter.. it should have been 4 serperate
chapters..
I just didn't have the time for it...

Anyhow, when schools starts again, I'd like to have a complete version
(V1.1) of the manual which also includes installation etc..

http://vdnkr.be/Ubuntu_Handleiding_V1_0.pdf

Please tell me your remarks..

PS: I didn't find the changes Jurgen made. So I'm afraid there are still a
kazillion spelling errors in there..
If some of you can get them all out by the end of the week I'll submit that
one at my fathers company, else it's this version.

Kind regards

 Hi Guys,
I'd like to propose an agenda of things to be discussed on the meeting on
 the 14th of July.
Please add proposals if you think of other things. Even if you can't/won't
attend but feel some topic is missing, feel free to voice your opinion.

 1. Welcome and Election of Chairman.
 2. Council reports
(Jurgen, could you make a quick summary of council activities since
 the meeting at your place?)
 3. Finances
(JanC, could you give us an up to date statement of the account?)
Discussion: what should we do with this account? There are no updates
of the statements. Maybe it is possible/feasible/desirable to change the
account? Shall we appoint a treasurer?
 4. Current projects
 4.1. USB sticks
 4.2 T-shirts
4.3 Print/art work (roll ups, posters, flyers...)
 4.4 Dipro
 4.5 Wouter's manual
 5. Future projects
 5.1. Courses?
 6. Council.
 6.1. Members resigning
 6.2 Re-appointment of old members
 6.3 Appointment of new members
 7. Closing
 8. Beer

 Cheers,
 Jan.

Okay,

As usual NMBS hours aren't convient at all. (I wonder why the hours don't
match up for such an important meeting??)
Anyhow, to be on time we should leave in hasselt station at 13h10 at track
5 taking train IR 2934 to Antwerp-Central station.
Then we should arrive in Antwerp around 14h17, but I wouldn't be surprised
if we'll be arriving late.

Anyhow, from there we take a tram for about 10 minutes and we have to end
with a nice little walk for about 5 minutes..

This, ideally results in us being early, but I take it that chances are
pretty big we'll arrive just in time..

As for your first question: Since we are an official LoCo team we can say
Ubuntu is ours.
For one because Ubuntu is from the community and secondly because LoCo
teams have all rights over the Ubuntu logo, product etc. as long as they
follow the COD an branding guidelines.

 A small question.
Do we have authorisation from Canonical to 'own' Ubuntu? I see a lot of
ons and onze in this manual. We may need to tread carefully with this.

As for the tone of your mail... no, not bold, just driving the message
home loud and clear. Maybe add a watermark to the document? I know, it's
easy to remove, but people that quickly copy from a mate, or send it to a
guy that asked for it, are often lazy to edit the document.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Dutch Ubuntu 12.04 Manual V0.1 Draft

2012-07-01 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hi Alain

The installation process should indeed be covered. But I'll explain the
deal we have with ERGO to tell you why I don't include it in this version.

ERGO (the company where my dad works) is changing to a clean desk policy
and everybody gets a laptop.
All desktops become obsolete by this. Every company employee can ask to
keep his or her computer and can even ask for multiple computers.
(That is because most people don't ask to keep their computer so those who
want can even get more than one)

This came to my ears and since we really need some new hardware for
Ubuntu-be I sent them a mail asking for about 20 computers.
The deal that came from this is following:

As it is for a good cause and we were the first to ask, we can get some
computers (probably 20, but not sure about the exact amount). Even more:
all obsolete desktops get Ubuntu installed on them (since they have to
swipe the drive anyway). So the computers we get from ERGO will have Ubuntu
on it, and all other computers from ERGO that are taken by other employees
will have Ubuntu on it. In return we provide them with a decent Dutch
beginners manual.

This deal was made in March I believe, and there are several computers
waiting to come home with my dad already. That's why I want to go fast on
this tutorial (ideally it should be ready by the end of tomorrow). Since
the computers come with Ubuntu already installed it isn't necessary for the
employees to install Ubuntu on them. To save time I decided to include the
chapter about installing later for the general version of the manual but
not for this ERGO version of it.

I hope this answers your question. I will try to do the installing part as
soon as possible. However, if you want, feel free to do that yourself!
If someone makes the installing part today or tomorrow, I will include it
in the manual as well..

Ubuntu. Are there any other non-standard apps I should talk about?

  Dropbox, filezilla ...

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Dutch Ubuntu 12.04 Manual V0.1 Draft

2012-06-30 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hey jurgen,

I'm working on the rest. I'll include a shortcut chapter and a settings
chapter.
I'll also put in a chapter to learn people how to work with the default
programs..

I'd like to have the first complete version ready by tomorrow.
By any means, if you spot typo's please do change them!

I'll send you the file tomorrow morning (I'm exhausted right now and it's
on the other computer)

Wouldn't a github be more interesting than an etherpad? Also, cant we
collaborate over internet in LibreOffice like you can with Office365?

Kind Regards

Wouter Vandenneucker

2012/6/30 Jurgen Gaeremyn jurgen.gaere...@pandora.be

 Super initiative!

If you send me the ODT-file, I'll fix some language errors and typos.

I would also recommend adding the keyboard shortcuts, and how you don't
need to memorize them (just keep the launch button pressed for a second).

 Great start anyway!

LibreOffice can export to wiki... maybe we can collaborate on the text
and/or structure this way (or using an ubuntu etherpad - just keep in mind
 to download regularly :p )

 Grtz,
 Jurgen.

[Ubuntu-be] Translation

2012-06-29 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hi guys,

I'm not sure if you remember that I've got about 20 computers (give or take
a few) for ubuntu-be. They are ready to come to my place, but I still have
to fulfill my part of the deal: providing the company with a decent dutch
manual for ubuntu. I failed to find one in dutch though.. Ideally I'd like
to give them this: http://ubuntu-manual.org/, but the latest dutch version
is 10.04. The 11.10 version is translated for 40% or so. If there are
people crazy enough to help translating, please do so here:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual/oneiric

I highly doubt this work will get done any time soon. So I'd like to find a
short write up. I was thinking about Claudio's handouts of the workshops we
gave at the Library in Genk. Although I think Jan B. was also working on
something similar. Does anybody know what the status of those projects is?

(The sooner the guide is ready, the sooner we'll get the computers)

to specify: most of the computers are between 5 and 3 years. So they are at
least dual core..

[Ubuntu-be] New Hardware

2012-03-10 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hi guys

A while ago I told on the meeting that the company where my father works is
going to change their hardware. Employees can ask to keep their pc, but
those that don't go away (most likely almost al of them) are ours to keep.
We are as a matter of fact the only organization who asked to get some of
these computers. My initial request was 20 PC's and a couple of Laptops for
Ubuntu-be, but that was only a target number. The IT guy told us that we
might even get some more out of it. Although this last fact remains
uncertain, we can be certain that we'll have some hardware.

All computers come with 2 TFT screens (according to my dad either 17,4 or
19), the screens are adjustable in height and can rotate to have a
portrait instead of a landscape setup.

But there is some good and some bad news to it. The bad news is that there
is a condition!
The good news is that the condition is that we need to provide them with an
Installable Ubuntu USB stick and a user manual (preferably in 4 Languages).
This is because all computers, even those that don't come with us, are
going to be running Ubuntu when they leave the office. Every employee who
takes one of those computers will receive a printed manual.. ;-)

It didn't look like a bad deal to me. :p
So I said we could live with that! ;-)

I'll keep you all posted!
Latest news I got was that their new servers where slightly delayed and the
new laptops need to be configured to automatically connect etc.. The guy
told my dad that he was expecting our first computers to leave somewhere in
may and the last somewhere in June. (which is worse that the initial April
estimate but better than the in between August estimate...)

Kind regards

[Ubuntu-be] Make Kony Famous

2012-03-07 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Since Ubuntu is about humanity and we actually have an african roots, I
figured this project might interest most of us:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

It's a documentary of about 30 minutes about an action group named
Invisible Children who are doing everything possible to make Kony famous.
Kony is a Rebel Leader who abducts kids in their sleep and forces the boys
to fight and the girls to become sexslaves.

Now, I know the mailinglist isn't supposed to be used for propaganda, but
this felt slightly different because the message at the end of documentary
is a call for volunteers.
I'm not saying we should act on this as Ubuntu-be, but I figured there are
some people on this mailinglist who, just like me, do want to get involved
in this project.
There is a facebook event to coördinate the action on april 20:
http://www.facebook.com/events/283826705021331/

I do believe this is relevant for the Ubuntu community, because the
children of today (no matter from where they are) are the ubuntu users of
tomorrow.
That and mainly the fact that every child deserves a decent childhood and
an even better future drive me to send you all this mail.

I'd like to apologize though for propagating through this medium, it just
seemed the most convenient way to reach all interested fellow ubuntueros.

Kind regards

[Ubuntu-be] Fair Aalst 4 March

2012-02-23 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Hi all,

As some of you might know, we attend a fair in Aalst on the fourth of
March. Since there isn't any real eventbox near Aalst, we might want to
think about a way to get an eventbox (or parts of it) to Aalst.
Anyhow, you can find more information on the wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Aalst_2012-03-04

But since there are some things that have to be taken care off, I'd like to
ask that others who aren't on the wiki but are going to come to Aalst, say
so. Then I'll include them in the mail to all participants.
One of the problems is the fact that we don't have any CD's yet for the
event. So JanC was wondering if somebody that goes to Antwerp this weekend
could take them from there to Aalst next week.
@nero: I understand you'll be attending both fairs, would it be possible to
take those CD's with you?

I'll make a to do list, but due to the late hour I think I'll be doing that
first thing in the morning!

You can join via your favorite IRC client, or you can log in here:

I'd like to keep the meeting fairly short, but there are a couple of things
on the agenda:

   - FOSDEM review
   - Hasselt Dipro review
   - Preparation of Antwerp Dipro
   - Our re-approval
   - Maybe Promotion?

Also I'd like to add a small varia point:

   - IRL meeting.

Since it's been almost a year since we had one, maybe it's time to meet

then..

2012/2/9 Jan Bongaerts jbongae...@gmail.com

 Hear hear!
I remember Adrien put out an invitation to write targets for the council
in November. Unfortunately I was too busy to contribute, but I'm wondering
what the outcome was, if any?

Please let's make sure the efforts of the individuals involved will not go
 in vain.
I'm sure all of the council members do their thing for the cause, but I
have a feeling there is little coordination. Maybe I'm wrong. As a
non-council member, I have no feedback of what is happening or living
within the council as it is existing now.

Don't get me wrong. I am not pointing any fingers, or slinging any mud.
I am just curious of what happened after the meeting of 24 May 2011.

 Cheers,
 Jan.

 Dear members of the Council,

(Adrien, Jan, Jurgen, Pierre, Pieter, Mark)

As far as I remember, the first council created after the 25/04/2011 IRL
meeting had a long to-do list (see following IRC meetings).

One of the priorities was to organize election in April 2012 for a new
(elected) council starting on 1th May 2012.

For familial circumstances I had to take distance with a lot of
activities (including the Ubuntu community) and perhaps I missed some mails.

I have no information about the development of the council and there was
(AFAIK) no communication in the mailing-list.

As participant to the 25/04/2011 meeting, I hope that the meeting was not
a waste of time and that the council-work is going on for the election.

And BTW, as a re-approval of the LoCo team should occur in February, the
 council could lead the procedure.

on the 16th, our LoCo has to be reapproved.

In preparation, Jean already did a great job on writing the reapproval
text. I think we should certainly discuss this text shortly.

My proposal: Tuesday Feb. 14th at 20:30 for about half an hour - one
topic: finalising the draft Jean made. That way you can organise all
your romantic plans after 21h00 :)

If you can't make it - please have a look at the wiki page and update
 whatever you think should tweaking.
If you think of other events worth mentioning: please add them, or at
least send a message to this list.

If you don't know how to edit a wiki page, please send a message and I
(or someone else) will gladly help you out.

 Grtz,
 Jurgen.

I do have a couple of photo's of a girl in an Ubuntu-be Shirt!

I'll drop the link here tomorrow (my launchpad account doesn't want to sign
in to the wiki atm..)

I hope someone can put the ubuntu boot pictures on the correct wiki page?

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Nw Webshop

2012-02-08 Thread Wouter Vandenneucker
Good idea.. :) make sure it also looks how much we have in stock :) that
helps us to keep track of it :)
(I was thinking of using an existing cms for that, maybe something like
opencart or magento or something. Anyhow, if you're doing it it's your
choice :D If you'd rather write from scratch or use a drupal module, you
should do that! :D)

Grts
