[Bug 988079] Re: Much slower OpenGL frame rates with unityshell loaded, than plain compiz

2012-06-10 Thread cicoandcico
OK, this is going to be a long one.
During these days I've taken some time to perform some benchmarks in my system
(Dell D830 with Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M).
The system is an up-to-date 12.04, running NVIDIA driver version 295.49. Vsync
was enabled in the drivers; compiz refresh rate was forced to 60Hz to prevent
wrong refresh rate detection.

I benchmarked gnome-classic with metacity, gnome-classic with compiz,
gnome-shell, Unity 3D, and Unity 2D against GlMark, Unigine, and 3DMark 2001.
The reason of the last benchmark is that I'm having e a lot of trobles running
LIMBO at a decent framerate under Unity, while I have no problem under
gnome-classic with metacity.
So before filing a new bug I thought about profiling it through a similar WINE
program.

Also, for the compiz benchmarks, I tried with and without the Force
full screen redraws workaround.

Please find the spreadsheet attached.

OVERALL RESULTS:
1) gnome-classic without effects is always the best performer
2) Force full screen redraws does bad: it gives -50% performances in some
cases
3) Unity 3D is a worse performer than standalone compiz (below 5% however)
4) Opening the dash in Unity 3D has a certain impact on performances (below 10%
however)
5) Gnome shell performs slightly better than Unity 3D
6) Unity 2D performance is sub-par

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
1) At least in my system, I've always felt that any composited environment has
a big impact in performances. I can see it even in 2D applications: take
firefox, where scrolling certain pages (eg: ossblog.it) is very sluggish. Now
this is confirmed by numeric results. The question is: do you think it's
normal, or it is just an NVIDIA driver issue?
2) I have also measured the memory usage in the several cases. There actually
is a slight correlation between memory usage and performance.
3) The 3DMark 2001 25% drop from metacity to Unity 3D confirms the problem I am
having with LIMBO. However, I feel that the drop is even higher, at
sensation. Do you think I need to file a new bug?

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-12-27 Thread cicoandcico
Daniel, I don't know what are the changes between version vv9 and vv10
of compiz, but now things have improved considerably. Most notably, I
can't tell the difference with or without Twinview. I tested also with
several suspend/resume cycles and I saw no performance slowdowns.

Finally, also bug #888039 seems now fixed to me. Is it possible?

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-12-17 Thread cicoandcico
Daniel, I resetted unity (--reset) and tried both your compiz and unity
packages (vv7 and vv5 respectively).
The combination of both solved my performance problems almost completely,
putting unity on par with gnome-shell.
However, it seems to me that performance is still a little better when *not*
using twinview.

I've used the PC for some days and I've not seen any issue. Just one
time, when looking at a youtube video, compiz froze and I had to switch
to another VT to restart lightdm. That was quite annoying given the lack
of a ctrl-alt-canc substitute in ubuntu.

Finally, bug #888039 is still here. Moving windows after hours of
usage, and some suspend/resume cycles, goes at a low framerate.
restarting X solves the problem.

Thank you for the moment, keep up with you good work!

[Bug 876987] Re: Cannot empty Trash from Unity bar

2011-11-27 Thread cicoandcico
ok, the problem is not always reproducible with Andrea's procedure but
happens sometimes (~50%).

also, it is related not only to the trash icon, but also with any other
launcher.

steps to reproduce:
1) log out and in again
2) right click on some launcher icon (I tested trash, home and terminal)
3) the right click menu appears but it is inactive (frozen)
4) left-clicking on the same icon restores the correct behavior (right-click
menu accessible)

2011-11-04 Thread cicoandcico
Sorry, I performed some other tests and they proved I was wrong with
bailer.

Now it seems that the situation can be simply improved by deactivating
the FPS detection, and forcing the framerate to 120Hz. In this way the
performance is acceptable.

However, now I'm writing from gnome-shell, and it's sad to repeat, but
here there simply isn't any problem. Windows move smooth as silk, like
any other animation.

Also, dash should support text drag/drop from and to applications. For example,
selecting a word in this page, and dragging it in the dash, should open a dash
search for that word (like Search with Google).
Should I open another bug for this?

[Bug 450746] [NEW] Hibernate after battery low loops 3 times

2009-10-13 Thread cicoandcico
Public bug reported:

The battery of my laptop went critically low, and the hibernate process
started. The laptop was shutted down.
I plugged in the cable, started Ubuntu successfully, but I was immediately
given another Battery critical notification, and the laptop went into
hibernation again.
This cycle happened 3 times, after that the battery level was no more
recognized as critical and the laptop didn't go into hibernation again.

I suppose there's a trigger level, that activates hibernation even when
in power cord.

[Bug 321098] Re: [jaunty regression] WLAN AP associating takes a very long time

2009-06-05 Thread cicoandcico
I marked bug #368760 as a duplicate of this, under suggestion of Peter
Kerekfy.
I can experience the problem in both flavours: association takes forever to
accomplish (and sometimes, two or three attempts), and wifi detection after
login takes ~40s (network set as system setting), while on intrepid it was
instantaneous.

Dell D830, iwl3945.

[Bug 272245] [NEW] gvfs-powered gnome cannot create files on burn:///

2008-09-19 Thread cicoandcico
Public bug reported:

with the introduction of the new gvfs backend in 2.22, gnome burn
utility has lost the ability to create files (a text file, as a example)
in the burn:/// meta-directory.

steps to reproduce the bug:

1. open burn:/// in nautilus
2. right click = create document = empty file
3. error: operation not supported by backend

that's certainly not a blocker, but that's a regression.

directories can be created flawlessy.

[Bug 78263] Re: [/etc/resolv.conf] Extra slow login / app launch

2007-12-10 Thread cicoandcico
yes, it is a workaround but is is not the right way to solve the problem imho.
you should clean resolv.conf *every* time the network is disconnected, clicking
wicd's disconnect button, for instance.
but this is still a workaround: the right way, i think, is making application
stop looking for dns on startup, as i suppose they're doing. but i'm quite
ignorant about the question.

I think, however, that the problem is a serious limitation for a mobile
platform. if ubuntu is supposed to be able to manage a mobile scenario,
it should be able to handle disconnections, not just connections, and it
should not turn into a slow system every time the connection is
unavailable.

but, i repeat, i'm lacking necessary knowledge to speak about that.
there probably are non-trivial causes.

[Bug 78263] Re: [/etc/resolv.conf] Extra slow login / app launch

2007-12-07 Thread cicoandcico
update: adding the above line does not have anything to do wiith the
problem.

as said by Trond Husoe, the slowness is due to an unclean resolv.conf
when no wired/wireless connection is established. it seems like when
you're launching an application the computer tries to connect to the dns
servers, but it can't, so the connection goes in timeout and the app is
finally started.

the problem is still present when using wicd to manage the network: in this
case, however, you just have to click the Disconnect button and resolv.conf
is cleaned up. Apps launch lag is immediately fixed.
Unfortunately, NM does not have anything similar, just a Enable wireless
button whose effect i ignore.

in the meanwhile, i temporary use a shell script that cleans resolv.conf
every startup, but that's only a workaround. is that right?

another question: can anyone tell me why apps that don't have anything
to do with the network, like gcalctool, are suffering of the problem?

[Bug 78263] Re: [/etc/resolv.conf] Extra slow login / app launch

2007-11-30 Thread cicoandcico
i don't think it is a network manager related problem. if network is
managed trough the classic /etc/network/intefaces, the problem persists.
i can confirm it in both my systems, a dell d830 notebook and a desktop.

when the configured network is not available, and you can't obviously connect,
the system presents an embarassing slowness in logging in and opening
applications like totem, terminal, nautilus. there is no processor or disk
activity, it just waits a lot.
other apps like vlc, which are not part of the gnome desktop, don't seem to be
affected.

i have no idea of what it could be. i remember, however, that about 1
year ago there was some people who reported the problem in the forum and
claimed to be able to solve it by adding some line to resolv.conf, like:

localhost 127.0.0.1

[Bug 44562] Re: Switch user causes screen resolution to change

2007-05-01 Thread cicoandcico
same problem here, using a clean install of 7.04 and nvidia ti4200 with
nvidia-glx drivers from repos.
when i select switch user, either with compiz or metacity (it makes no
difference), gdm resolution is scaled down to 640x480.
if i log in with another account, i am not able to change it.

i modified xorg.conf this way:

Section Screen
Identifier Default Screen
Device nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4200]
Monitor SyncMaster
Defaultdepth24
SubSection Display
Depth 24
Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection
EndSection

but there was no difference.

[Bug 38873] Re: gtk+ apps slowness

2007-04-27 Thread cicoandcico
hi, just an update to say that the problem still lives with feisty (as
it did with edgy).

i know, it's not an ubuntu's fault, but a gtk's one... maybe in the
future we'll have accelerated gtk, but at the present slower computers
suffer. newer processors behave better, i experienced good performance
especially with core2 duos processor.
